In director John Stalberg’s stoner comedy, High School, soon-to-be valedictorian Henry Burke (Matt Bush) decides to get high for the first time in his life after a chance encounter with the school’s resident drug head, Travis Breaux (Sean Marquette).  Shortly afterward, he discovers that the school’s dictatorial principal, Dr. Leslie Gordon (Michael Chiklis), has just instituted a zero tolerance drug policy.  When Gordon schedules a mandatory drug test for the entire school the next day, Henry sees his dreams of a bright college future are about to go up in smoke.  His only option involves stealing law student-turned-drug dealer Psycho Ed’s (Adrien Brody) stash of high powered ganga.

At the press day for High School, we sat down at a roundtable interview with Chiklis and Bush.  Chiklis, who portrayed Detective Vic Mackey on FX’s ground-breaking drama The Shield, revealed what attracted him to the project, how he developed his character, and why he had fun playing the outrageous role.  Bush discussed how the film compared to his real-life high school experience and why he enjoys playing characters that are distinctly different.  They also told us about their latest projects including Chiklis’ new CBS television series, Vegas, with Dennis Quaid and Bush’s feature film, Trouble with the Curve, with Clint Eastwood.

We’re happy to premiere an exclusive red band clip from director John Stalberg Jr.’s comedy High School.  The film centers on a soon-to-be valedictorian (Matthew Bush) who smokes pot for the very first time, only to find out that a mandatory drug test has been scheduled at school.  In a moment of panic, Bush and his friend (Sean Marquette) conspire to spike the school’s bake sale brownies with the help of a law-student-turned-drug-dealer (Adrien Brody) in order to make everyone fail the drug test.  This clip features a teacher played by Yeardley Smith waxing poetic about soulful singer/songwriter Bryan Adams’ member in a pot-induced rambling.

Co-written and directed by John Stalberg, High School focuses on soon-to-be valedictorian Henry Burke (Matthew Bush) who smokes pot for the first time, then discovers that a mandatory drug test has been scheduled at school.  He teams up with his stoner friend Breaux (Sean Marquette) to make sure everyone fails.  Together they spike the school’s bake sale brownies with high-powered ganja stolen from law-student-turned-drug-, Psycho Ed (Adrien Brody).  Their half-baked plan goes up in smoke when Psycho Ed realizes his prized stash has been used to get everyone in the school stoned out of their minds.

At the press day for High School, we sat down for a roundtable interview with actor Colin Hanks and director John Stalberg to talk about their recent collaboration and how they set about turning the concept of a stoner comedy on its head.  Hanks described what attracted him to the role, what the directing process was like, why Psycho Ed has got nothing on Male Page, and his upcoming film, The Guilt Trip, and his plans to direct a documentary. Stalberg, an expectant father, compared delivering a film on time and on budget to impending parenthood and revealed his collaboration with Richard Kelly on Owen’s Manual and the possibility of a High School sequel called Juvie. As it’s 4/20 and all, it seems appropriate that a red-band trailer for the stoner comedy High School go online.  Co-written and directed by John Stalberg, the film centers on a soon-to-be valedictorian (Matthew Bush) who smokes pot for the very first time, only to find out that a mandatory drug test has been scheduled at school.  In a moment of panic, Bush and his friend (Sean Marquette) conspire to spike the school’s bake sale brownies with the help of a law-student-turned-drug-dealer (Adrien Brody) in order to make everyone fail the drug test.  As with the first trailer, there are a couple laughs to be found.  It seems like a fun enough premise for a stoner comedy, and I could see it being a fun watch on a late weekend night.

The first trailer for the pot comedy High School has gone online. The trailer has a couple laughs, and I’ve heard that the full film is quite a bit better than this clip would have you believe.  The premise could be a lot of fun, and Brody and Michael Chiklis are nearly unrecognizable as the psycho drug dealer and school principal, respectively.  Moreover, it looks like there’s a Thurman Murman cameo, and every movie is automatically improved 100% with Thurman Murman.

Adrien Brody Exclusive Video Interview SPLICE

Adrien Brody slice Splice

One of the best films I saw at this year’s Sundance Film festival was director Vincenzo Natali’s Splice. Starring Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley as genetic scientists that create a new life form with severe consequences, the film is original, dark, twisted, and awesome.  Trust me, if you’re the kind of person that complains Hollywood never does anything original, you’re going to want to check out Splice this weekend.

Anyway, I recently got to sit down with Adrien Brody to talk about his work in Splice and all the other projects he’s working on like High School and Predators.  As a huge fan of his work in such films as The Pianist, The Brothers Bloom, The Darjeeling Limited, I’ll admit to being very excited getting the chance to talk with him.  Thankfully, he could not have been nicer and while our interview was scheduled for print (meaning no video), he agreed to let me use my new Kodak ZI8 flip camera.  Hit the jump to check out what he had to say:

Yesterday we gave you a list of all the films playing in-competition at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival.  We now have the list of the films playing out-of-competition and they’re divided up into four categories: Premieres, Next, Spotlight, and Park City at Midnight. Since combining these lists would be a lot to read for just one article, we’ve broken it up to make it easier on your eyes.  You’re welcome.

Films in the Spotlight category include Louis C.K.: Hilarious; Rodrigo Garcia’s Mother & Child starring Naomi Watts, Annette Benning, and Kerry Washington; the great-sounding documentary Winning Time: Reggie Miller vs. The New York Knicks; and Enter the Void, the new film from Gaspar Noé (Irreversible).  Films in the Park City at Midnight category include HIGH School starring Adrien Brody; and Buried starring Ryan Reynolds.

Adrien Brody Goes Back to HIGH SCHOOL to Sell Drugs

slice_high_school_movie_image_adrien_brody_01.jpg

Academy Award-winning actor Adrien Brody plays a drug dealer in the stoner comedy High School and we have pictures to prove it. The film, written and directed by John Stalberg, tells the story of a high school valedictorian who accidentally gets stoned the day of a drug test that threatens his title. The boy’s solution? Get the rest of the school stoned too! The film stars Brody as drug dealer “Psycho Ed”, Colin Hanks as the valedictorian, and Michael Chiklis as the principal, so it’s not as Direct-to-DVD as its premise might suggest. See Brody in all his reefer regalia after the jump.
