It's a bit ironic that Men in Black 3 star, Will Smith, was recently quoted as saying, "I don't want to be the sequel guy," especially when there are a number of potential franchise sequels with him in the works. Including a possible Men in Black 4, there are also Independence Day 2, Hancock 2, Bad Boys 3, I, Robot 2 and, of course, I Am Legend 2. While some of you may be confused by Smith's possible return in that last one, I'll point you to the alternate ending of the original 2007 blockbuster. Hit the jump for a few snippets on sequel work from Smith and an anecdote about why he passed up the title role in Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained.

While I wasn't a fan of the 2007 sci-fi flick I Am Legend (being more a fan of the source story), I can understand the studio appeal of a sequel. We recently reported that I Am Legend 2 screenwriter, Arash Amel, was making progress on the script before moving on to another project. Smith was also reported to be a producer on I Am Legend 2 in that post, however, as Smith says to BBC News (via Eurweb):
“Producers are working on it. I’m not actually working on it. If it’s great, I’m into it.”
When asked if he’d reconsider, Smith confessed:
“Probably not.”
He went on to talk about the aforementioned sequels, saying:
“I don’t want to be the sequel guy. I figure I’ve got about six or seven more ...

Some writer news recaps for you today. Here they are in brief:

Warner Bros. has tapped I Am Legend 2 screen writer, Arash Amel, to do a page-one rewrite of director James Watkin's Methuselah draft.
Universal Pictures is looking to Contraband scribe Aaron Guzikowski to turn in a new draft of Evan Spiliotopoulos's treatment of Herman Melville's Moby Dick.

Hit the jump for more details on each project.

First up from Variety comes the news that Amel will turn in a fresh new draft of Methusaleh. The original draft, written by director Watkins (The Woman in Black), followed a 1,000-year-old man who developed an extensive set of survival skills during his lifetime. The picture is set as an action-adventure film and will be produced by David Heyman of the Harry Potter franchise. Amel is expected to begin work on Methuselah after turning in his draft of the I Am Legend sequel, which Akiva Goldsman, Will Smith and James Lassiter's Overbrook Entertainment are producing. Amel's first produced script, The Expatriate, debuts this fall; his Black List script, Grace of Monaco, is set to star Nicole Kidman as Grace Kelly.

Also from Variety is the report that Guzikowski will polish up a new draft of Moby Dick. The original treatment was turned in by Adam Cooper and Bill Collage (both of Tower Heist) and did away with Ishmael's first-person narration to focus instead on the destructive rampage of the White Whale prior to its interactions with Captain Ahab's ship, the Pequod. The draft also spun Ahab ...

Despite missing the point of Richard Matheson's original novel and using crummy CG, I Am Legend made $585 million worldwide because that's just what Will Smith does. For those who missed the flick, Smith played scientist Robert Neville, the last man in a post-apocalyptic world that was taken over by mutant vampires. Back in September 2008, we reported that Warner Bros. had hired D.B. Weiss (now the co-creator of Game of Thrones) to pen the screenplay for a prequel based on input by Smith, I Am Legend director Francis Lawrence, producer James Lassiter, and co-writer Akiva Goldsman. Then the movie lapsed into development hell, and I hoped it would stay there.

But Warner Bros. has remembered the dormant project, and now they along with Overbrook Entertainment and Goldsman have closed a deal to make another installment in the franchise. Hit the jump for more.

Screenwriter Arash Amel (The Expatriate) will pen the script, and according to Deadline, the movie is not a prequel. Smith won't sign on until the script is finished, and there's no word if Lawrence will return. I'm not sure how you bring Smith's character back, and a sequel would seem easier if the actor chooses not to return since you could bring in a new protagonist. Of course, if I Am Legend had gone with the original (and better) ending where Neville survives, they wouldn't have to jump through hoops to revive the character.

For those who haven't seen the original ending, you can check it out below:
