As if you need more reason to be excited about this year’s Comic-Con in San Diego, The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman and Skybound have announced that they will be hosting a zombie obstacle course to commemorate the 100th issue of The Walking Dead graphic novel series.  Here’s what Kirkman had to say about the event, hosted in Petco Park:

“Our fans have been reading about it, watching it and now they get to live it with The Walking Dead Escape. We are literally transforming Petco Park into the early days of society’s collapse and San Diego is just the first city to fall.”

Instead of a race, The Walking Dead Escape is set up as an experience with interactive displays and Walking Dead references throughout.  After you’ve completed the course, your decisions will determine if you’re infected or not.  Hit the jump.

Johnny Depp’s Infinitum Nihil label will co-produce an adaptation of the Image comic mini-series The Vault alongside GK Films. The latter acquired film rights to the three-issue property, written by Sam Sarkar and illustrated by Carrie Gastonny, which just debuted last week. While Sarkar and Gastonny’s book may very well be worth the adaptation (I’ve yet to check it out, so I really can’t comment), Heat Vision points out that its acquisition may have been expedited by Sarkar’s place as an executive at Depp’s Infinitum.

In terms of plot, The Vault follows a small team of treasure hunters who, when excavating a legendary treasure pit, unleash an “ancient evil.” Co-producing the film alongside Depp and GK’s Graham King is Infinitum president Christi Dembrowski and Tim Headington of GK. Most recently, GK Films teamed up with Depp on Rango and will release Martin Scorsese’s Hugo on November 23rd via Paramount. The second issue of The Vault is currently slated to hit comic shelves on September 28th.

Warner Bros. has acquired the Image Comics vampire-centric mini-series Undying Love. Created by Tomm Coker and Daniel Freedman, Undying Love is set in modern day Hong Kong and tells the story of an ex-solider, John Sargent, who strikes up a relationship with a Chinese girl, Mei, who happens to be a vampire. As the story goes, Sargent learns that the only way he can be with Mei is to defeat the vampire responsible for her bloodsucking tendencies. Unfortunately for him, said vampire also happens to be one of the most powerful in history. Per Heat Vision, co-creators Coker and Freedman will also pen the script for Warner Bros. with Stephen L’Heureux, Chris Bender, and J.C. Spink on board to produce.

Paramount has hired the writing duo of Adam Jay Epstein and Andrew Jacobson to pen an adaptation of the Image Comics title Lions, Tigers, and Bears. Created by Mike Bullock, Lions, Tigers, and Bears focuses on an 8-year-old boy, Joey Price, who finds out that his stuffed animals are responsible for protecting him from the monsters that reside in his closet. The studio originally acquired rights to the title a few years ago and Heat Vision reports that it would like to franchise the property as an “effects-heavy live action tentpole.” In addition to this gig, Epstein and Jacobson are also penning the script to an adaptation of their children’s book The Familiars. Sam Raimi will produce that pic with Doug Sweetland set to direct.

Screenwriting’s dynamic duo of Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese (Zombieland, Deadpool) have been tapped to helm the adaptation of the graphic novel Cowboy Ninja Viking, a tale of a schizophrenic assassin possessing the western grit of a cowboy, the deadly skills of a ninja and the berserker rage of a Viking.

Deadline is reporting that Disney has purchased the feature pitch for the Image Comics property, written by A.J. Lieberman and artist Riley Rossmo. In addition to their writing credits on Cowboy Ninja Viking, Wernick and Reese will also be producing alongside Mark Gordon and Management 360. Hit the jump for more deadly triple combos.

Frank Darabont, director of “The Shawshank Redemption” and “The Green Mile”, is adapting and directing a TV version of the definitive zombie comic “The Walking Dead”.  The project is being executive produced by Darabont and Gale Anne Hurd for a berth on basic cable’s AMC network.  More after the jump.
