Exclusive DREDD Miniseries Images and Poster; SUPERFIEND Arrives on October 27th

It’s huge that 2012’s Dredd amassed such an enthusiastic cult following, but the film only took in $35.6 million at the worldwide box office so it’s no wonder that the fate of the sequel is still so uncertain.  However, producer Adi Shankar isn’t going to let that stop him from bringing us more Dredd.

While we continue to keep our fingers crossed for Dredd 2, Shankar is going to hold us over with a web series called Superfiend.  When we first told you about it a couple of weeks ago, it seemed as though it’d follow in the footsteps of Shankar’s past “Bootleg Universe” installments, The Punisher: Dirty Laundry and Venom: Truth in Journalism, run with a live-action format and possibly feature stars from the film, but Superfiend is actually an animated series.  Hit the jump to get a sense of what’s coming in our exclusive poster and Dredd miniseries images.

Head to Space with Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway in 7 New INTERSTELLAR Images

A collection of new Interstellar images from director Christopher Nolan’s upcoming sci-fi epic have landed online, hot on the heels of some pretty interesting comments from Nolan himself saying the film marks a specifically unique entry in his filmography.  Nolan wrote the screenplay for Interstellar based on a previous draft by his brother, Jonathan Nolan (The Dark Knight), and the story finds a crew of astronauts led by Matthew McConaughey setting off into deep space in order to find a new planet that might be habitable.  There seems to be plenty of culturally relevant themes at play here, as Interstellar’s Earth is one that has been rendered uninhabitable after years of pollution and destruction at the hands of, well, us.  Most interestingly, though, is the fact that Nolan is essentially telling a father/daughter story, and I’m curious to see how he grounds the film with this strong emotional center.

Hit the jump to take a look a these new Interstellar images, which thankfully don’t reveal too much.  The film also stars Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Casey AffleckMichael CaineDavid OyelowoWes BentlyJohn LithgowEllen BurstynTopher GraceDavid GyasiMackenzie FoyBill IrwinTimothee Chalamet, and Matt Damon.  Interstellar opens on film in 70mm IMAX and 35mm on November 5th and everywhere else on November 7th.

New UNBROKEN Trailer Continues to Prove Jack O’Connell Is One to Watch [Updated with New Images and Posters]

Who’s ready for a Jack O’Connell tour de force?  The guy’s already proven himself thanks to his work in Starred Up and the upcoming limited release ’71, but based on this new trailer for Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken, it looks as though he’s got a lot more to offer.  The narrative is remarkable in and of itself, but O’Connell appears to bring such heart to the role of Louis Zamperini that his performance is bound to up the intensity of the situation tenfold.  Will it be enough to earn him some Oscar buzz?  There’s already some significant competition in the Best Actor category so it might be a reach, but Adam thinks the film’s got a chance at snagging a spot in the Best Picture race, and based on the quality of this new promo, I’m inclined to agree.

Hit the jump to check out the latest Unbroken trailer.  The film arrives on December 25th and also stars Domhnall GleesonGarrett Hedlund, Jai Courtney, Finn Wittrock, Alex Russell, John Magaro and Luke Treadaway. [Update: Universal has also released new images and posters for the film.]

Chris Hemsworth Battles a White Whale in First IN THE HEART OF THE SEA Images from Ron Howard’s Drama

Warner Bros. has released the first In the Heart of the Sea images from director Ron Howard’s upcoming drama.  Based on Nathaniel Philbrick’s excellent book of the same name, the film tells the story of the whaling ship Essex, which in 1819 was rammed by an angry whale in the South Pacific.  The surviving crew drifted for 90 days in three tiny whaleboats and encountered disease, hunger, and eventually cannibalism.  It’s a heartwrenching true story, and it served as the basis for Herman Melville’s Moby Dick.  Howard’s fantastic cast is led by Chris Hemsworth as the ship’s first mate, Tom Holland as a young cabin boy who eventually tells his tale to Melville once he’s an adult, and Benjamin Walker as Captain George Pollard Jr.  All of the actors lost a significant amount of weight for the film.  Philbrick’s book is positively enthralling, and after Howard’s swell Rush, I’m really looking forward to seeing how he brings Heart of the Sea to life.

Hit the jump to check out the first In the Heart of the Sea images, and check back on Collider soon to watch the first trailer.  The film also stars Cillian Murphy, Ben Whishaw, and Jordi MollaIn the Heart of the Sea opens in theaters on March 13, 2015.

UNDERDOGS Voice Cast Includes Ariana Grande, Nicholas Hoult, Matthew Morrison and More; Plus Two New Images

The idea of foosball players coming to life to help a kid save his village and the girl of his dreams sounds pretty silly, but it’s hard to turn down a movie with Ariana Grande, Nicholas Hoult, Matthew Morrison, Katie Holmes, John Leguizamo, Eugenio Derbez, Taran Killam, Bobby Moynihan and Chazz Palminteri attached to voice the characters.  Plus, the film did win the Grand Prize Award for a feature film at the New York International Children’s Film Festival, so perhaps I’m being too quick to judge.  (Although I do find Grande’s speaking voice quite grating.)

Open Road Films has released a new Nightcrawler clip from director Dan Gilroy’s upcoming psychological thriller, which was one of the best films I saw at the Toronto International Film Festival this year.  Jake Gyllenhaal plays Lou Bloom, a sociopath who plunges into the depths of filming gruesome footage for local news, and begins pushing the limits between covering the news and making it.  The film has shades of Network and Taxi Driver, and you’ll get a little taste of the former in this new clip that finds Bloom pitching himself to a late night network news producer played by Rene Russo.  Their relationship in the film develops in delicious fashion, and I can’t wait to see the movie again when it opens on Halloween.

Will Smith and Margot Robbie Are Con Artists in First FOCUS Images

by     Posted 12 days ago

Warner Bros. has unveiled the first Focus images from Crazy, Stupid, Love. directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa’s upcoming “comedy-caper-love story”.  The film revolves around a seasoned con man named Nicky (Will Smith) who becomes romantically involved with Jess, a novice con artist (Margot Robbie), only to subsequently break things off when she gets too close for comfort.  Three years later, Jess—now an accomplished femme fatale—pops back into Nicky’s life, throwing his latest scheme into jeopardy.  This project has been around for some time and Ficarra and Requa were initially hoping to reunite Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone in the lead roles before they subsequently attached Ben Affleck and Kristen Stewart.  Those two separately fell off, but then Smith came on and was eventually paired with Robbie.  It’s been a while since Smith tackled R-rated territory and Robbie broke out in a big way with The Wolf of Wall Street, so I’m definitely curious to see how their chemistry stacks up. We should find out soon enough, as I imagine a trailer will be arriving shortly.

Take a look at the first Focus images after the jump.  The film also stars Rodrigo Santoro and Gerald McRaneyFocus opens in theaters on February 27, 2015.

An Anthropomorphic Bear Makes Friends in New PADDINGTON Images

The Weinstein Company has released some new Paddington images from director Paul King’s (The Mighty Boosh) upcoming film based on the beloved bear.  The story finds the anthropomorphic bear (voiced by Ben Whishaw) alone and lost at Paddington Station, in search of a home.  Soon after he meets a kind family and seems to have found happiness, at least until he catches the eye of a nefarious taxidermist (Nicole Kidman).  The previous trailer has promised a slapstick-heavy tone that should attract a number of young moviegoers, and even I wasn’t averse to the charm of the titular hat-wearing bear.  These new images give us a better look at the human characters and also show more of Paddington being adorable.

First TOMORROWLAND Images Unveiled; Brad Bird and Damon Lindelof Reveal Story Details for Unique Sci-Fi Film

Disney’s mysterious Tomorrowland has been one of the more curious projects percolating over the past couple over years, in no small part because it acts as The Incredibles and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol director Brad Bird’s second live-action feature and boasts a screenplay from Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof.  Plot details have been almost humorously non-existent, especially since production wrapped quite a while ago.  What we do know is that the film has a connection to the Disney theme park of the same name and stars George Clooney, Hugh Laurie, and Britt Robertson.  However, with more details poised to be unveiled at New York Comic-Con this weekend, the very first Tomorrowland images have arrived along with some exciting revelations from Bird and Lindelof about the pic.

Mark Wahlberg Drops 60 Pounds in First THE GAMBLER Images

Paramount Pictures has released the first The Gambler images from director Rupert Wyatt’s (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) remake of the 1974 drama, and the first thing you’ll notice is that star Mark Wahlberg has undergone a pretty striking physical transformation for the role—especially in relation to his appearance in Transformers: Age of Extinction.  The actor plays a literature professor whose gambling spirals out of control, and Wahlberg lost 60 pounds to play the role.  Speaking with USA Today, though, Wahlberg says dropping the weight wasn’t the toughest part of the film: “Being believable as a teacher was one of my greatest challenges and most rewarding. It meant being able to have the comfort to really understand and say those words.”  Paramount is releasing the film in the heat of awards season, so it’ll be interesting to see if the pic can land Wahlberg another Oscar nod.

Take a look at the first The Gambler images after the jump.  A trailer should be debuting shortly.  The film also stars Brie Larson, Jessica Lange, John Goodman, and Michael K. WilliamsThe Gambler opens in limited release on December 19th.

South Carolina Welcomes Hollywood With Open Arms (and Sweet Tea); Over 50 Photos Detail the Charleston Area, and the State’s Plans to Grow Its Film Industry

This past week, the South Carolina Film Commission hosted a small troupe of journalists for a lovely, whirlwind tour of Charleston and its surrounding areas.  The wining and dining (so, so much dining) was an effort to show off the city, and the state, as a great place for moviemaking.  It worked.  A fairly long list of films have made their home there over the years, perhaps most famously The Patriot; but also The Prince of Tides, Dear John, Forrest Gump and incredibly, Die Hard: With A Vengeance (along with many others).  TV shows are also no exception: Army Wives just finished up its seventh season, while Reckless finished its first (and while Reckless may not have been a great series by any measure, it did have “one of the best B-rolls on television,” to agree with our hosts).

Hit the jump for more on how South Carolina is looking to craft its partnership with the film industry, plus over 50 photos I snapped that focus on the detail and beauty of the Charleston area.  Also, consider this article in part as an FYI and tour guide of restaurants and local sights, all of which deserve their high praise.

First AMERICAN SNIPER Images Reveal a Bulky Bradley Cooper in Clint Eastwood’s Military Drama

The first American Sniper images for director Clint Eastwood’s upcoming drama have been released online.  The film stars Bradley Cooper as U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, who served four tours in Iraq and quickly became the most lethal sniper in U.S. military history.  His reputation crossed enemy lines, making him a prime target for the insurgency, and when he returned home to his wife and kids, he struggled to leave the war behind.  These images give us our first look at a transformed Cooper, who put on 40 pounds to portray Kyle.  Steven Spielberg was originally set to direct the film before bowing out, and it would’ve marked interesting territory for the filmmaker.  Regardless, Cooper (who is also the film’s producer) has been incredibly passionate about telling Kyle’s story, even acquiring the rights to his autobiography before his death, and he tells USA Today that the film is a “character study” of a man who took an honorary discharge in order to come home and put together his family life.  We’ll get our first good look at the drama when the trailer debuts tomorrow.

Hit the jump to check out the first American Sniper images, and check back tomorrow to watch the trailer.  The film also stars Sienna Miller, Jake McDorman, Luke Grimes, Navid Negahban, and Keir O’DonnellAmerican Sniper opens in limited release on December 25th.

The trippy and intense indie flick Mall, the feature directorial debut of Linkin Park’s Joe Hahn, examines a group of disaffected suburbanites who find themselves at a shopping mall in the midst of a seemingly random shooting.  In theaters and on VOD on October 17th, and with a script co-written by Vincent D’Onofrio, who also acts in the film, it stars Cameron Monaghan, Gina Gershon, Peter Stormare and James Frecheville.

To celebrate the release of the film, Joe Hahn also conceived and curated an exhibit of artwork inspired by the film, called Beast Astray, which can now be seen through October 5th at the Known Gallery (441 N. Fairfax Avenue in Los Angeles), and Collider was invited to check it out.  Hit the jump to check out our photos of the artwork, and check back closer to the film’s release for our exclusive interview with the musician/filmmaker.
