First Images From Jon Stewart’s ROSEWATER Convey Film’s Bleak Tone

by     Posted 57 minutes ago

rosewater-images

Yesterday Jon Stewart’s directorial debut Rosewater got a release date and now we have a look at the first images released from the film.  If anyone was expecting a comedy, this definitely isn’t one.  Written and directed by Stewart, the film stars Gael Garcia Bernal and is an adaptation of BBC journalist Maziar Bahari‘s memoir, Then They Came for Me.  Bahari, who was born in Tehran, went to Iran in 2009 to interview Mir-Hossein Moussavi, but was arrested by the Revolutionary Guard, and then interrogated and beaten for 118 days by a man known only as “Rosewater”.  Stewart had a personal connection to the story as Bahari’s previous The Daily Show appearance was used as “evidence” that he was a spy.

I’m eager to see Rosewater, not just for the subject matter but out of personal curiosity to see if Stewart has directing chops.  He puts a lot of care into what he does (and is good at admitting past mistakes like Playing By Heart), so I’m confident his compass was true when he chose to take this on.  Hit the jump for the Rosewater images.  Open Road releases the film on November 7th.

Earlier today Paramount Pictures released a third trailer for Interstellar, director Christopher Nolan’s upcoming sci-fi drama.  The film stars Matthew McConaughey and revolves around a group of explorers who make use of a newly discovered wormhole “to surpass the limitations on human space travel and conquer the vast distances involved in an interstellar voyage.”  We got such a nice, expanded look at the film’s world (and the worlds of the film) in the new trailer that we thought we’d put together an image gallery of some of the trailer’s highlights.

A batch of new Into the Woods images from director Rob Marshall’s (Chicago) feature film adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim musical has landed online.  The Disney production stars James Corden (Begin Again) and Emily Blunt as a Baker and his wife who venture into the woods to confront the witch responsible for putting a curse on the childless couple.  Along the way, they run into a number of familiar fairy tale characters.  Today’s new images reveal quite a few of these, including Anna Kendrick as Cinderella, Johnny Depp as the Big Bad Wolf, and Chris Pine as Prince Charming.  It’s an absolutely stacked cast, and Marshall had everyone sing live on set, so it should be interesting to see the final result come together this Christmas.  With these images debuting today, I imagine a first trailer is right around the corner.

Earlier today, the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival unveiled lineups for a few of its other programs, including the Midnight Madness category, which celebrates the “wild, wacky, and weird” in film.  This year’s lineup is rather eclectic, and we’ve got debut images from some of the movies to give audiences a taste of what to expect.  They include Big Game, in which a 13-year-old boy must save the president of the United States (played by Samuel L. Jackson), Cub, about a Cub Scout pack that encounters a feral boy in the wild, Electric Boogaloo, which recounts the story of Cannon Films, director Sino Sino’s Tokyo Tribe, and more.

Check out images from the Midnight Madness films after the jump.  The 2014 Toronto International Film Festival runs from September 4th – 14th.

New THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES Images: Luke Evans Prepares for War

Fresh off yesterday’s teaser trailer debut, Warner Bros. has released a few new The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies images for director Peter Jackson’s final installment in his J.R.R. Tolkein saga.  This third Hobbit film will obviously cover the concluding events of the book, but will also likely cover much more ground from Tolkein’s appendices, as we glimpsed some truly epic footage of Lee Pace’s Thranduil doing battle and Ian McKellen’s Gandalf in a rather precious position in yesterday’s trailer.  I still don’t think the Hobbit films are near the quality of Jackson’s masterful Lord of the Rings trilogy, but during the Hobbit panel at Comic-Con last weekend, I did get the sense that Jackson really aims to go out on a high note with this one.  Here’s hoping he succeeds.

Hit the jump to check out the new The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies images.  The film also stars Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, Orlando Bloom, Cate Blanchett, Evangeline Lilly, Stephen Fry, Hugo Weaving, and Benedict CumberbatchThe Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies opens in theaters on December 17th.

First NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM 3 Images: DOWNTON ABBEY’s Dan Stevens Debuts as Lancelot

night-at-the-museum-3-images

20th Century Fox has unveiled the first Night at the Museum 3 images from director Shawn Levy’s upcoming sequel.  Officially titled Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb, the third and final entry in the franchise takes the action to London’s British Museum and the city as a whole, where Downton Abbey star Dan Stevens brings the legendary Lancelot to life.  Ben Stiller reprises his role as night watchman Larry Daley, and Robin Williams also returns as the bombastic Theodore Roosevelt.  The previous sequel, Battle of the Smithsonian, raked in over $400 million at the worldwide box office, so the holiday debut for Secret of the Tomb should ensure solid business for the family film.  With these new image debuts today, I imagine a premiere trailer should be on the way shortly.

Hit the jump to take a look at the first images from Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb.  The film also stars Ben Kingsley, Rebel Wilson, Rami Malek, Steve Coogan, Owen Wilson, Patrick Gallagher, Mizuo Peck, Bill Cobbs, Dick Van Dyke, and Mickey RooneyNight at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb opens in theaters on December 19th.

This year’s Comic-Con was chock-full of peeks at upcoming films and TV shows, but one of the highlights was seeing the first footage from Avengers: Age of Ultron.  The film looks to be quite ambitious in nature, especially when it comes to the villain Ultron, played via motion capture by James Spader.  While it will be a while before the general public gets to see any footage from Joss Whedon’s sequel, Marvel unveiled some props at its Comic-Con booth, offering the first look at Ultron Mark 1, Cap’s broken shield (ominously alluded to in the footage), a piece of the Hulkbuster Iron Man armor, and Black Widow’s new ride.  All of these played a significant role in the teaser footage we saw from the film.

Take a look at the Avengers: Age of Ultron prop images after the jump, but for full context with regards to how they fit into the movie, be sure to read Matt’s extensive panel recapAvengers: Age of Ultron opens in theaters on May 1, 2015.

Over 35 Marvel Comic-Con Panel Images, Featuring the Casts of AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON and ANT-MAN

As you can tell by the absolutely massive amount of Comic-Con content on the site at the moment, it’s been a whirlwind last few days here in San Diego at Comic-Con 2014.  The festivities are winding down, and while we still have a fair amount of SDCC content yet to post, this Sunday we thought we’d bring the large majority of people that were unable to attend the convention a little closer to arguably the biggest panel of the convention: Marvel.  This year, Marvel Studios showcased Avengers: Age of Ultron and Ant-Man during its Saturday night Hall H panel, and while the lack of surprises made the proceedings a tad underwhelming, it was nevertheless an entertaining affair.  If you haven’t already, be sure to read our full Avengers: Age of Ultron panel recap and Ant-Man panel recap.

After the jump, you’ll find __ Marvel Comic-Con images from both panels, featuring Robert Downey Jr., Paul Rudd, Chris Evans, Elizabeth Olsen, Michael Douglas, Chris Hemsworth, Evangeline Lilly, Samuel L. Jackson, Corey Stoll, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jeremy Renner, Cobie Smulders, Mark Ruffalo, Paul Bettany, James Spader, director Peyton Reed, and Thanos himself Josh Brolin

Comic-Con: THE STRAIN “He Is Here” Event Featuring Guillermo del Toro with over 20 Images

The Strain Comic-Con Event Images

The FX drama series The Strain is creepy, gory and just bloody good fun.  Having seen eight of the 13 episodes that will make up Season 1, I can say that it’s everything I’d want from a summer TV series, sprouted from the crazy imaginative mind of Guillermo del Toro.

Taking advantage of their time at Comic-Con, The Strain held an exclusive fan event, called “He Is Here,” at the Reading Cinemas Gaslamp 15.  While showrunner Carlton Cuse and most of the cast dropped by to greet the line, Guillermo del Toro spent quite some time in the theater lobby, chatting with fans and signing the posters that were given out.  Even comic book artist Mike Huddleston was there, signing and sketching.  And, of course, The Master himself introduced the screening of the pilot episode.  Hit the jump for photos of a collection of prominent props and costumes that were on display from the show.

THE FANTASTIC FOUR Skips out on Comic-Con But Offers a Glimpse at The Thing

the-fantastic-four-the-thing-image

Apparently Fox decided not to bring any marketing for The Fantastic Four to Comic-Con this weekend, even though the Josh Trank-directed picture is currently shooting in Louisiana and will debut before next year’s convention.  However, a very unofficial image has leaked out into the interwebs that shows what is apparently the film’s new version of The Thing.  Jamie Bell is playing the rocky humanoid hero, aka Ben Grimm, and thankfully it looks like he’ll be doing so through motion capture.  It looks pretty good, but the bar was previously set laughably low by poor Michael Chiklis’ rock suit in the last effort.  Hit the jump to check it out.

Also starring Michael B. Jordan as Human Torch, Kate Mara as Invisible Girl, Miles Teller as Mr. Fantastic, and Toby Kebbell as Dr. Doom, The Fantastic Four is set to open June 19, 2015.

BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE – Warner Bros.’ Comic-Con Presentation Reveals First Look at Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman

During Warner Bros.’ Comic-Con presentation in the convention center’s famed Hall H today, a crowd-pleasing presentation kicked things off with Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.  While we’ve previously seen Henry Cavill in costume as Superman, along with Ben Affleck in costume as Batman, this presentation was the first glimpse of Gal Gadot in her Wonder Woman armor.  Needless to say, it looks like the Internet’s knee-jerk reaction to Gadot’s casting was premature; no surprise there.  They also screened some footage that apparently wowed the crowd, which Matt covers in his panel recap.

Also starring Jesse Eisenberg, Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Jeremy Irons, Holly Hunter, Callan Mulvey, Tao Okamoto, and Laurence Fishburne.  Batman vs. Superman opens May 6, 2016.  Hit the jump to check out the new Wonder Woman image.

News has been kind of quiet on Aleksander Bach’s action sequel Hitman: Agent 47, but 20th Century Fox has decided to change that up by releasing the first pair of images from the film.  Each of them feature Rupert Friend in the title role of a bald assassin who is genetically engineered and barcoded; unfortunately that’s about all we have in the way of synopsis information at the moment.  The images also feature Friend’s co-star Hannah Ware as Katia van Dees.

Also starring Zachary QuintoCiaran Hinds, and Thomas KretschmannHitman: Agent 47 opens February 27th, 2015.  Hit the jump to view the new images.
