Lionsgate has released a red-band trailer for director Jon S. Baird's Filth, the adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s popular crime novel about a crooked and devious police officer who goes on cocaine binges and has rampant sex ventures as part of his annual vacation to Amsterdam. The film stars James McAvoy as Bruce Robertson, the chauvinist cop who is enlisted to solve a murder while also trying to stop his colleagues from taking his much-coveted promotion in the force. The trailer lives up to its red-band classification. With an abundance of profanity from a visibly coked-out Robertson, plenty of coercive sex scenes and brief nudity, the film is sure to live up to its name. Just watching this trailer made me feel filthy. Personally, I haven’t read the novel, but I hear a tapeworm is used as a narrative device and now I’m highly intrigued.

Filth will open in September in the UK, a US release date is yet to be announced. The film also stars Jamie Bell, Imogen Poots, and Jim Broadbent. Hit the jump to watch the red-band trailer and to view the newly-released poster.

Check out the red-band trailer for Filth below via Flicks and Bits:

Here’s the official synopsis for Filth:
Scheming Bruce Robertson (James McAvoy), a bigoted and corrupt policeman, is in line for a promotion and will stop at nothing to get what he wants. Enlisted to solve a brutal murder and threatened by the aspirations of his colleagues, including Ray Lennox (Jamie Bell), Bruce sets about ensuring their ruin, right under the nose of unwitting Chief Inspector ...

The first trailer, clip and poster for writer/director Daniel Algrant's Greetings from Tim Buckley are now available. The film stars Penn Badgley (Gossip Girl) as a young Jeff Buckley in the early 90s who gets to know a young woman (Imogen Poots) while rehearsing for a tribute show to his late father folk-singer Tim Buckley. As Jeff attempts to form his own identity in the shadow of the legacy of a man he barely knew, he also finds comfort in this new relationship as they explore New York City. The film also stars Ben Rosenfield in flashbacks to the elder Buckley's 1960s experiences. Hit the jump for the trailer, clip and poster.

Check out the trailer, clip and poster for Greetings from Tim Buckley below:

Here's the official synopsis for Greetings from Tim Buckley:
GREETINGS FROM TIM BUCKLEY is a mesmerizing portrayal of two generations of musicians. In 1991, a young Jeff Buckley (Penn Badgley, "Gossip Girl") rehearses for his public singing debut at a Brooklyn tribute show for his father, the late folk singer Tim Buckley. Struggling with the legacy of a man he barely knew, Jeff finds solace in a relationship with an enigmatic young woman (Imogen Poots, 28 Weeks Later) working at the show. As they explore New York City, their adventures recall glimpses of Tim’s (Ben Rosenfield) 1960s heyday.

Real estate magnate, nudie show producer, and smut publisher Paul Raymond cared more about success than people. It's an obvious conclusion from a man who treated women as objects, put his own desires first, and didn't mind doing cocaine with his daughter. Perhaps it's fitting that Michael Winterbottom's The Look of Love never bothers to look any deeper at its protagonist since Raymond never took a deeper look at the people in his life. Nevertheless, it still makes for a deeply uninteresting biopic, and a surprisingly bland picture considering the lengths its subject went to in order to titillate his audience.

The film moves over the course of Raymond's (Steve Coogan) career, from his beginning as an impresario, to the owner of most of Soho, London, to taking his love of naked female flesh into the pages of soft-core porn magazine Men Only. Raymond is almost entirely self-absorbed throughout, knows there's no such thing as bad publicity, and attempts to pass himself off as urbane and sophisticated. Treating his wife Jean (Anna Friel) and lover Fiona (Tamsin Egerton) as disposable playthings, Raymond's only affection is for his daughter Debbie (Imogen Poots), and even she ranks below his business and pleasure. When he closes down Debbie's stage show where she sings but doesn't strip like every other woman in Paul's life, she breaks down in tears. "Don't cry. The show's losing money," Paul explains as if this would possibly console his child.

For a figure as wealthy, famous, and powerful as Paul Raymond, ...

We've got two new additions to leading lady casting news today. Check them out in brief below:

Viola Davis (The Help) will join Prisoners, a Black List script from Aaron Guzikowski (Contraband) that stars Hugh Jackman (X-Men) and Jake Gyllenhaal (Donnie Darko) to be directed by Denis Villeneuve (Incendies).
Imogen Poots (28 Weeks Later) will star opposite Zac Efron (17 Again) in Are We Officially Dating?, a romantic comedy from debut writer/director Tom Gormican.

Hit the jump for more on both pictures.

First up, The Wrap reports that two-time Oscar nominee Davis will join Prisoners in an unspecified role. Jackman stars as a small-town carpenter by the name of Keller whose young daughter and her best friend are kidnapped. Keller takes the case into his own hands when the police fail to find them, but runs up against Detective Loki (Gyllenhaal), a top cop with an over-inflated ego. 2013 will see a number of releases for Davis, including The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: His and The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Hers, Beautiful Creatures and Ender's Game.

Deadline reports that Poots will star opposite Efron in Are We Officially Dating? The Black List plot follows three male friends in New York City who pledge to stay single, even as each of them begins to fall in love. Poots' role has yet to be specified. The picture also stars Deborah Ann Woll (True Blood) as an ex-wife of one of the trio. Production is expected to begin this month. Poots recently landed the lead opposite Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad) in ...

[This is a re-post of my review from the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival. A Late Quartet opens today in limited release.]

I love it when films help me to understand a new culture. Usually, I visit these new cultures through documentaries, but Yaron Zilberman's non-documentary feature A Late Quartet captivated me with an introduction to the world of orchestral music. More impressive, he uses a technical explanation as a gateway to the conflict between his central characters. Their instruments are thoughtful metaphors for their personalities, and we see how the pursuit of personal expression through a musician's art can both divide and unite his or her group. The movie does hit a false note when it forces a conflict between two characters, but for the most part, the cast, the story, and the setting play together in perfect harmony.

The Fugue String Quartet is about to enter its new season. First violinist Daniel (Mark Ivanir), second violinist Robert (Philip Seymour Hoffman), violist Jules (Catherine Keener), and cellist Peter (Christopher Walken) have been playing together for twenty-five years. Daniel is the group's founder, Robert and Jules are married, and Peter is the elderly heart of the group. When Peter confesses to the group that he's in the early stages of Parkinson's disease and will likely have to retire, it sets off a chain reaction where the group's dynamic is severely tested. Robert feels like a new cellist offers the opportunity for him to alternate first violin with Daniel, but Daniel and Jules ...

Today, we're pleased to bring you an exclusive clip from the upcoming film A Late Quartet. The film stars Philip Seymour Hoffman, Catherine Keener, Christopher Walken, and Mark Ivanir as members of a string quartet whose relationship is thrown into disarray when one of them is forced to retire. In this clip, Imogen Poots, who plays the daughter of Hoffman and Keener's characters, expresses her displeasure at having to take lessons from Ivanir's exacting violinist. This clip illustrates what I like best about the movie: it takes a relatable situation (a daughter sharing a problem with her father) and then infuses it with the unique world these characters inhabit (professional classical musicians).

Hit the jump to check out the clip, and click here for my full review from TIFF. A Late Quartet opens tomorrow in limited release.

Here's the official synopsis for A Late Quartet:
On the eve of a world renowned string quartet’s 25th anniversary season, their beloved cellist, Peter Mitchell (Christopher Walken), is diagnosed with the early symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease. When Peter announces he wishes to make the upcoming season his last, his three colleagues find themselves at a crossroad. Competing egos and uncontrollable passions threaten to derail years of friendship andcollaboration. Robert Gelbart (Philip Seymour Hoffman), the quartet’s second violinist, announces his desire to alternate chairs with first violinist Daniel Lerner (Mark Ivanir), after years of sacrifice and peacemaking for the benefit of the group. Robert’s wife, violist Juliette Gelbart (Catherine Keener) has a particularly difficult time grappling with ...

Check out the latest casting news in brief below:

Imogen Poots (Fright Night) has been cast opposite Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad) in the Need for Speed adaptation directed by Scott Waugh (Act of Valor).
Mark Strong (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) will join Nicole Kidman (Moulin Rouge!) in Before I Go to Sleep, director Rowan Joffe's psychological thriller adapted from S.J. Watson's best-selling book.
Sarah Jessica Parker (Sex and the City) will star in in the indie coming-of-age drama, Mixtape, directed by Tom Vaughan (What Happens in Vegas).

Hit the jump for more info on each picture, plus the first poster and synopsis for Before I Go to Sleep.

Heat Vision reports that Poots is in talks to star in Need for Speed opposite Paul. The DreamWorks' adaptation of the Electronic Arts racing game will be “rooted in the tradition of the great car-culture films of the '70s while being extremely faithful to the spirit of the video game franchise." While little is known about Paul's role, Need for Speed will feature Poots as a stock car racer on the rise. Her father bets his life's worth on her races, presumably leading to financial trouble. George and John Gatins developed the story with the former writing the screenplay.

Variety reports that Jessica Parker will star in Mixtape, which centers on "12-year-old girl, raised by her aunt, who never knew her mother. She finds a mixtape that once belonged to her mom and accidentally destroys it, so she sets out to track down each of the obscure songs listed on the cassette." (So the kid spends ...

It's lonely in the future for Captain America, aka Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), so Marvel has reportedly added a new love interest for Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Details are scarce as to the actual character and whether or not she'll appear in future Marvel movies, as the studio has a habit of signing talent to multi-picture deals. What is known is that the role is hotly contested, with some of today's top female talent vying for it. Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones), Alison Brie (Community) and Jessica Brown Findlay (Downton Abbey) are in the mix. Hit the jump to see who else is competing for Rogers' affections and to see what Marvel character might make a cameo appearance in the Cap sequel.

Deadline reports that Marvel has added a contemporary love interest for the time-jumping Steve Rogers. In addition to Clarke, Brie and Brown, they report that Imogen Poots (Fright Night) and Teresa Palmer (I Am Number Four) are also in contention. As an added bonus, it looks like the Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) will be making a cameo appearance in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. (Variety's Jeff Sneider confirms it.) No word yet on how her character fits into the plot or if she'll be a post-credits appearance only. The other confirmed new character is The Falcon, to be played by Anthony Mackie (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter).

As a bonus, I've pain-stakingly put together a few images of the lovely actresses vying for the role (the things I do for ...

The first trailer for director Dan Algrant’s biopic drama Greetings from Tim Buckley has landed online. The film stars Penn Badgley as famed singer/songwriter Jeff Buckley and tracks the artist’s life in relation to his famous father, Tim Buckley, who he barely knew. The trailer teases a couple of strong performances from Badgley and Imogen Poots, and the simultaneous tracking of Jeff and Tim Buckley’s lives is an interesting angle. The pic recently debuted at the Toronto Film Festival.

Here’s a synopsis for Greetings from Tim Buckley:
Greetings from Tim Buckley follows the story of the days leading up to Jeff Buckley’s eminent 1991 performance at his father’s tribute concert in St. Ann’s Church. Through a romance with a young woman working at the concert, he learns to embrace all of his feelings toward the father who abandoned him – longing, anger, forgiveness, and love. Culminating in a cathartic performance of his father’s most famous songs, Jeff’s debut stuns the audience and launches his career as one of the greatest young musicians of his time.

Filming has commenced on director Pascal Chaumeil’s (Heartbreaker) adaptation of the Nick Hornby novel A Long Way Down. The story revolves around a group of strangers who coincidentally meet on the top of a London skyscraper on New Year’s Eve where they individually had gone to commit suicide. The four strangers make a pact to stay alive until Valentine’s Day at least, and the story follows this group of unlikely friends “as they try to pull back from the brink.” The ensemble cast includes Pierce Brosnan, Toni Collette, Aaron Paul, and Imogen Poots, with Sam Neill and Rosamund Pike (Pride and Prejudice) also signing on.

The four central strangers are played by Brosnan, Collette, Paul, and Poots, who are set as a once-beloved TV personality, single mother, failed musician turned pizza-delivery boy and a “sassy teen” respectively. Hornby is the author behind such great works as High Fidelity, About a Boy and Fever Pitch, so the source material is a solid foundation. Jack Thorne (How I Live Now) wrote the screenplay and production is taking place in England and Spain. Hit the jump to read the full press release (which includes a synopsis) and to check out the first image.

Here’s the press release:
LONDON – September 17th, 2012 - Principal photography is underway on A LONG WAY DOWN. The film is currently being shot on location in England and Spain.

Nick Hornby’s (‘About A Boy’, ‘High Fidelity’) irreverent hit novel has been adapted for the screen by Jack Thorne (How I Live Now, ...

Robert feels like a new cellist offers the opportunity for him to alternate first violin with Daniel, but Daniel and Jules disagree. Daniel also begins mentoring Jules and Robert's daughter, Alexandra (Imogen Poots), which leads to other complications.

These conflicts are made so ...

Since Captain America: The Winter Soldier will take place in the present day (or at least partially in the present day; there will be flashbacks), the production is looking for a new female lead. Three actresses are reportedly the frontrunners for the part: Felicity Jones (Like Crazy), Anna Kendrick (50/50), and Imogen Poots (Fright Night). However, this news should be taken with a grain of salt since it comes from the New York Post's Page Six [via Bleeding Cool]. The post is more tabloid than newspaper, but if we want to play along with their story, I like these three choices. While the Post doesn't mention the name of the lead female character, the most likely candidate is Sharon Carter.

Hit the jump for more. Captain America: The Winter Soldier stars Chris Evans, and is due out April 4, 2014.

For those unfamiliar with Carter, Wikipedia says she was originally the younger sister of Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell's character in the first movie), but was later retconned as Peggy's niece. Sharon Carter is an ex-field agent for S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and had a romantic relationship with Captain America. I don't keep up with superhero comics (too many books to buy because of all the damn crossovers), so I don't know how they pushed through the awkwardness of having Steve Rogers start dating the niece of his former love interest. I'm not sure how they'll figure it out in the movie either assuming the new female lead is Sharon Carter.

The sequel has already cast ...

Earlier today, TIFF announced that they were adding new films to a line-up that's already packed with terrific-looking films. Among the new additions are:

What Maisie Knew (directed by Scott McGehee) Starring Joanna Vanderham, Onata Aprile, Alexander Skarsgård, Julianne Moore, and Steve Coogan.
Do Not Disturb (directed by Yvan Attal) Starring François Cluzet and Charlotte Gainsbourg.
Greetings from Tim Buckley (directed Dan Algrant) Starring Imogen Poots and Penn Badgley.

Hit the jump to check out the images and synopses. The 2012 Toronto International Film Festival runs from September 6 – 16th.

What Maisie Knew
Based on the Henry James novella, the story frames on 7-year-old Maisie, caught in a custody battle between her mother – a rock and roll icon – and her father. What Maisie Knew is an evocative portrayal of the chaos of adult life seen entirely from a child’s point of view.

Do Not Disturb
Jeff unexpectedly shows up on Ben’s doorstep at 2am. Since their college days, they’ve taken very different paths. Jeff is still the wild man, a serial lover, an artist and eternal vagabond who’s never stopped roaming the world. Ben has settled down with chilled-out and wonderful Anna; they bought a small and comfortable house in the suburbs and started trying to make a baby. But this quiet life is disrupted by the whirlwind that is Jeff, especially when he takes Ben to a wild party, from which they return at dawn, having ...

Director Terrence Malick is currently in production on his follow-up to the yet-to-be-released follow-up to last year’s The Tree of Life, and some set photos have revealed a new addition to the cast. While we wait for a release announcement regarding Malick's Ben Affleck-fronted romantic drama To the Wonder, the director is in the midst of filming Knight of Cups, one of two films he plans to shoot this year (the other is currently untitled, but was previously called Lawless).

Plot details for Knight of Cups are basically non-existent, but we know that Christian Bale stars alongside Natalie Portman, Cate Blanchett and possibly Isabel Lucas. We recently saw set photos of Bale and Portman horsing around on the beach, but new shots show Bale filming scenes with a punked-up Imogen Poots (Fright Night, Jane Eyre). Hit the jump for more, including set photos and a humorous video of Malick caught on TMZ.

We can safely assume from these images that Poots also may or may not appear in Knight of Cups; given Malick’s prolonged and ever-changing editing process there’s no guarantee that every actor will end up in the final cut. One of these images gives us a brief glimpse of Malick, and the notoriously shy director was actually recently caught on the paparazzi show TMZ having a meeting with Benicio Del Toro. No one at the entire boneheaded staff of TMZ recognized the legendary filmmaker (they were too distracted by the beautiful celebrities), but the video shows Malick trying to duck ...

With many of the major bases covered (Freddy, Michael, Jason), there’s not a lot of great and/or successful horror movies from the 1970’s and 1980’s left to be remade. Oh, there are still tons of films from that era of genre, but it seems that name recognition is a greater driving factor than the films themselves. So it’s no surprise they got around to remaking 1985’s Fright Night, a film that did for vampires what Scream did for slasher films by gently playing with the conventions while reinventing it for a new generation (albeit much more subtly).

And with True Blood, etc. there’s a lot of vampirism in modern culture, so on that level it’s a fitting time for the remake. Craig Gillespie directs the 2011 version, which takes the premise of the original in some interesting and not so interesting directions. Anton Yelchin stars as the boy next door who sees his neighbor (Colin Ferrell) as something of a threat, only for him to be a real life vampire. Imogene Poots, Toni Collette, David Tenant and Christopher Mintz-Plasse co-star. Our review of the 3-D Blu-ray follows after the jump.

Yelchin plays Charlie Brewster, who has been dating Amy (Poots) in partly an attempt to reform himself from his nerdy past. He’s still haunted by old friend “Evil” Ed (Mintz-Plasse) who is convinced his neighbor Jerry Dandridge (Ferrell) is a vampire. Charlie doesn’t believe him, but also doesn’t like the way Jerry looks at his mom (Collette). When Ed goes missing, Charlie ...

In case you missed it, click here to check out Matt's review of the film from TIFF.
Up next, Celluloid Dreams announced that it has picked up worldwide rights to co-writer/director Dan Algrant's drama Greetings from Tim Buckley. There's plenty to like about the original 1985 version of Fright Night: the performances from Chris Sarandon and Roddy McDowall, the great practical horror effects, and the thoughtful subtext about teens coming to grips with their burgeoning sexuality and the familiar inadequacies that come with it. The remake of Fright Night ditches almost all of these aspects but still manages to be an entertaining creature feature filled with excellent performances, plenty of humor, and some nice surprises as it tries update the film for a new audience.

As in the original, teenager Charley Brewster (Anton Yelchin) has a smoking hot girlfriend (Imogen Poots) but he also has a serious problem: a vampire named Jerry (Colin Farrell) has moved next door. That's where the similarities begin to fall away as Charley has become popular and left his former best friend "Evil" Ed (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) behind. Ed desperately tries to convince Charley that Jerry is a vampire. In his on-the-nose description, Ed says Jerry "Is the shark from Jaws." Charley soon realizes that Ed was right and he has to find away to defeat Jerry and save his mom (Toni Collette) and girlfriend. He tries to get some help from "professional" vampire-hunter/entertainer Peter Vincent (David Tennant) only to find that the Criss Angel-esque Las Vegas stage magician is a vainglorious ball of nihilism and hedonism. Meanwhile, the threat of Jerry (yes, the film makes fun of the fact that the monster's name is Jerry) looms over everything Charley does.

In the re-imagining of Fright Night, teenager Charley Brewster (Anton Yelchin) learns that his new next door neighbor, Jerry Dandrige (Colin Farrell), is really a vicious vampire, slaughtering people for their blood. Only problem is that no one, including his mother (Toni Collette) and girlfriend Amy (Imogen Poots), believe him. Unable to convince anyone of the imminent danger, Charley looks to popular Las Vegas illusionist and self-proclaimed vampire expert Peter Vincent (David Tennant) for help, before finally taking matters into his own hands.

At the film’s press day, co-stars Anton Yelchin, Christopher Mintz-Plasse (who plays Evil Ed) and Imogen Poots talked about updating the Fright Night story and characters for a Twilight world, the appeal of making a scary vampire film, hanging out with each other and bonding while shooting in Albuquerque, and the freedom that director Craig Gillespie embraces in the performances from his actors. Check out what they had to say after the jump:

Question: Anton, did you have any doubts about starring in something that is a remake?

ANTON YELCHIN: No. I read it and it was a good story and a good character arc. The original is fantastic, but I have a lot of respect for (director) Craig [Gillespie], so the fact that the script was solid and Craig was doing it and then Colin [Farrell] signed on, it all seemed like the elements were coming together. Having seen the film, I can say that it was justified confidence. The script was respectful of the original, but also very ...

Comes a Bright Day has all the ingredients to be a great product of the UK independent film system. First of all, it's a crime drama with a dark sense of humor---"an offbeat, coming-of age love-story set during the armed robbery of London’s most exclusive jewelers." The cast is led by up-and-comers Craig Roberts (Submarine) and Imogen Poots (Fright Night), surrounded by veteran actors Kevin McKidd (Grey's Anatomy) and Timothy Spall (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) and fresh face Anthony Welsh. And the official website is packed with material to spread the word about the film, including images, featurettes, and a production blog.

Director Simon Aboud is in post-production right now on his feature debut, with an eye toward premiering at Sundance or Berlin in 2012. Hit the jump to see a ton of new images plus a few videos from the set of Comes a Bright Day.

Here's the official synopsis:
An offbeat, coming-of age love-story set during the armed robbery of London’s most exclusive jewellers. Sometimes funny, often dark, always captivating and never what you expect.
