Earlier today we added Michael Rosenbaum to the shortlist to play Peter Quill (aka Star-Lord) in Guardians of the Galaxy alongside Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jim Sturgess, and Zachary Levi. One more possibility has surfaced for Star-Lord, but the casting rumors have branched out with a shortlist for Drax the Destroyer. First up: CBM hears that Marvel is “still high on” John Krasinski for Star-Lord, a “master strategist and combat expert who wears an ability-enhancing suit and pilots a psychically-linked ship.” Marvel had their eye on Krasinski for Captain America once upon a time. Although that didn’t work out the studio is still understandably keen on Krasinski. Peter Quill is set up to be the central character in James Gunn‘s adaptation of the Marvel comic.
For Drax the Destroyer, Marvel is reportedly looking at Isaiah Mustafa, Brian Patrick Wade, and Dave Bautista. Interesting list: Mustafa is best known as the Old Spice Guy and Bautista is a former WWE professional wrestler. Wade by comparison is just your typical actor—given his unspectacular resume, we can conclude Marvel is not seeking big names to play Drax, a superhuman warrior created to defeat Thanos. I don’t envy Isaiah Mustafa. Okay, well I envy his physique and comic timing, but I don’t envy his struggle to break out of his breakthrough role as “The Old Spice Guy”. Going from pitchman to serious actor is a leap for audiences and they’ll have to be acclimated to him becoming more than just the man your man could smell like. Mustafa has been doing good work in raising his profile by grabbing guest spots in Hot in Cleveland, Chuck, and NCIS, a supporting role in Madea’s Big Happy Family, and he’ll also be co-starring in Horrible Bosses this summer. But these roles all pale in comparison to the one Mustafa really wants: Luke Cage. Mustafa has created a fake teaser trailer for the character and even did an amusing sketch for Marvel.com where his head was superimposed on a Luke Cage action figure. After raising Old Spice’s sales exponentially following his Emmy-nominated spots, Old Spice spokesperson Isaiah Mustafa is taking his manly musk to the silver screen. In an interview with THR, the former NFL wide receiver turned actor announced that he has been cast in the Warner Brothers comedy Horrible Bosses. In regards to the role, Mustafa says:
“It’s a smaller role, but who wouldn’t want to be in one of these funny, irreverent comedies? The cast is great. I’m playing a cop because I play these authoritative characters well. I don’t know exactly who I’m in the scene with — maybe Jennifer Aniston!”
While this is great news for Mustafa and his career, I must admit this may cause some annoyance on my behalf as people already confuse me for the guy and his being in a mainstream comedy probably isn’t going to help matters (Note: this is a complete lie).
