Paramount and Tom Cruise Moving Forward with JACK REACHER Sequel Based on NEVER GO BACK

It looks like that Jack Reacher sequel might actually be coming to fruition.  Director Christopher McQuarrie’s adaptation of the popular Lee Child character was a modest success when it opened last year, grossing $218 million worldwide.  The critical response was quite positive both with regards to McQuarrie’s take on the material and Tom Cruise’s portrayal of the lead character, and fans of the film (myself included) were eager to see the franchise take off.  Though initial reports made the prospect of a sequel coming to fruition seem unlikely, the film’s box office push over the $200 million mark forced Paramount and Skydance Productions to reconsider.  And reconsider they did, as the studios are now actively developing a follow-up based on another one of Child’s novels.  Hit the jump for more.

JACK REACHER Blu-ray Review

In many ways, Tom Cruise never escaped the fallout from that infamous 2005 ride on Oprah’s couch.  His box office returns have gradually slipped and the sheen of “Scientology Weirdo” still hangs around him in the public mind. It’s quite unfair because 1) the man’s private life is still his own business and 2) the quality of his films in recent years has been quite good. From his brilliant cameo in Tropic Thunder to the slick thrills of Valkyrie and the unexpected triumph of Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, he’s pretty much firing on all cylinders these days… despite comparatively poor box office. Jack Reacher is a sad testament to the bind he finds himself in: a smart, intelligent action thriller that got lost amid bad timing. The Blu-ray release is a perfect opportunity to catch what you probably missed. Hit the jump for my full review.

It was the only game in town, so Oblivion’s first place finish this weekend didn’t come as a shock. Universal’s sci-fi release had a solid debut – earning an estimated $38.1 million from 3,783 locations, or just under what G.I. Joe: Retaliation managed three weeks back. Oblivion also topped its initial domestic projection of $35 million, though the real strength of the Tom Cruise vehicle is overseas.

 Title Weekend Total
1.  Oblivion $38,152,000 $38.1
2.  42 $18,025,000 $54
3.  The Croods $9,500,000 $154.8

JACK REACHER Sequel Possibly in the Works at Paramount and Skydance

Back in January, we reported that a sequel to writer/director Christopher McQuarrie’s Jack Reacher was looking unlikely.  That was also about $50 million ago.  Now that the film has crossed $200 million worldwide, Paramount and Skydance are reportedly in the process of building the scaffolding for another installment.  The previously cited box office target was $250 million, but when you’ve got a proven draw in Tom Cruise (Jack Reacher marks his 19th film to hit that total), it makes those dice easier to roll.  Now that the (anti)hero has been introduced to a wider audience than only those familiar with the Lee Child novels, Deadline reports that the studios are at least running the numbers on the potential franchise.  Let us know if you think they should go ahead with another Jack Reacher in the comments below!

JACK REACHER Sequel Unlikely to Move Forward

We’ve got some bad news for Jack Reacher fans.  Though Paramount’s feature film adaptation of the popular Lee Child book series character made a respectable $15 million on opening weekend and now stands at just a hair over $70 million for its total domestic gross, apparently the film’s box office performance isn’t likely to warrant the production of a sequel.  The Tom Cruise-starrer was developed as a potential franchise given the bounty of Jack Reacher source material in Child’s books, but a new report states that the current $153 million worldwide total gross of director Christopher McQuarrie’s pic is short of Paramount’s benchmark for moving forward with a sequel, and the possibility of a follow-up now hinges on the film’s performance in other international territories.  Hit the jump for more details.

Jack Reacher placed second, but with less than half The Hobbit’s total. And with Les Miserables and Django Unchained on deck for Christmas Day, it looks like more than one new title will have a hard time distinguishing itself from the holiday crowd.

‘Tis the season for lots of movies, fa la la la… oh, you know the rest. Always a crowded period, this holiday season saw Hollywood’s major releases packed into just a seven day span – leaving The Hobbit plenty of room to grow into a blockbuster. Part one of Peter Jackson’s trilogy ended its first week with $113.2 million in the US, and added another $10.1 million (estimated) to that total yesterday. Despite an onslaught of new titles – including Jack Reacher and This is 40 on Friday – An Unexpected Journey is expected to stay on top until Christmas Day, when Les Miserables has a chance to unseat it.

Here’s a look at Friday’s top five:

Title Friday Total
1.  The Hobbit $10,170,000 $123.3
2.  Jack Reacher $5,100,000 $5.1
3.  This is 40 $3,700,000 $3.7
4.  Rise of the Guardians 41,566,000 $75.3
5.  The Guilt Trip $1,493,000 $3.5

Christopher McQuarrie brings us a violent and exciting film with a great lead character in Jack Reacher.  Tom Cruise plays the title character based on the series of novels by Lee Child, an ex-army cop who has gone off the grid and resurfaces to help solve a quintuple murder.  He enlists the help of lawyer Helen Rodin (Rosamund Pike) who has decided to defend the prisoner, despite the overwhelming objection of her father, the D.A. (Richard Jenkins) and police detective Emerson (David Oyelowo).  For more on the film, here’s six clips, over twenty images, positive early reviews, and all our previous coverage.

At the NYC press day for the film, I was able to speak to stars Rosamund Pike and David Oyelowo about how they got involved, what it was like working with legends Tom Cruise and Werner Herzog, and their future projects, including Edgar Wright’s The World’s End and Lee Daniels The ButlerWatch what they said after the jump.

JACK REACHER Review

It’s almost difficult to remember what a hard-boiled, stripped-down, old-fashioned action-thriller looks like.  We’ve become so reliant on CG for our action and jump-scares for our thrills that we forget solid action-thrillers don’t need to rely on gigantic budgets or creepy mysteries to make an impact.  Jack Reacher is that confident action thriller we’ve been missing.  Writer-director Christopher McQuarrie has created a film that almost feels like a throwback in its confident plotting and attitude.  Furthermore, Tom Cruise once again reminds us that we can never underestimate his acting talent, and while he may not share the physicality of the character in the book, the attitude remains.

Early JACK REACHER Reviews Praise the Action, Direction and Casting of Werner Herzog as the Villain, Mostly Positive Reactions for Tom Cruise

by     Posted 1 year, 231 days ago

Some early reviews for writer/director Christopher McQuarrie’s Jack Reacher are now available, with a consensus praising the film’s action sequences and pacing, as well as McQuarrie’s capable direction. Werner Herzog’s rare performance as the villain was also lauded across the board, while Tom Cruise’s role as the titular tough guy hit home with a majority of viewers. Fans of the Lee Child source novels were more critical of Cruise playing the 6’5” enforcer, but appeared to be won over by his on-screen intensity. The film also drew a number of comparisons to classics like Dirty Harry, Bullitt and The Outlaw Josey Wales.

Jack Reacher, also starring Robert Duvall, Rosamund Pike and David Oyelowo, opens December 21st. Hit the jump to read some of the early reviews and reactions.

Tom Cruise Kicks Sufficient Ass in First Clip from JACK REACHER

Paramount Pictures has released the first clip from director Christopher McQuarrie’s adaptation Jack Reacher.  The film is based on the popular series of novels by Lee Child and stars Tom Cruise as a man who exists outside the law and exacts his own brand of ruthless justice.  Some fans were upset over the casting of Cruise since the Jack Reacher character in the novels is an imposing 6’5” and 250 lbs., but this clip does a fine job of proving that Cruise’s Reacher is plenty intimidating as we see him take on five “bad guys” at once.  Say what you will about Cruise’s personal life, but the guy always fully commits to a role and I’m definitely encouraged by this debut clip.

Hit the jump to watch the clip.  The film also stars Rosamund PikeRobert DuvallRichard JenkinsDavid Oyelowo, and Werner Herzog.  Jack Reacher opens on December 21st.
