Jon M. Chu’s G.I. Joe: Retaliation is now playing in theaters. The sequel’s story finds the Joes disbanded and outnumbered as they must square off against not only the Cobras, but also threats within their own government. G.I. Joe: Retaliation stars Dwayne Johnson, Bruce Willis, Channing Tatum, D.J. Cotrona, Elodie Yung, Ray Park, Byung-hun Lee, Ray Stevenson, Walton Goggins, RZA and Adrianne Palicki. For more on the film, here’s clips, images, on set interviews, and all our previous coverage.

Last weekend, I sat down with producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura for an extended interview. Over the past few days we’ve posted what he said about Jack Ryan and Red 2, an adaptation of the Vince Flynn novel American Assassin and the true story Deepwater Horizon. But that was just the tip of the iceberg, because we also talked about making G.I. Joe, the nine-minute dialogue-free action sequence featuring Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes, the 3D post conversion, changes from the first film, the rumored reshoots, what it was like to film at NASA, how involved Hasbro is with the project, and what he'd like to see in G.I. Joe 3 if they make it. In addition, we also talked about how the collapsing home video market has changed the way movies are made, the lack of risk-taking with regards to the material that studios are choosing to make, the difficulty of selling sci-fi and the key to landing audience interest, whether he's read any great scripts recently, and a lot more. Hit the jump to watch.

Lorenzo di Bonaventura is certainly one of the more prolific producers working today. The man is juggling a few different franchises at the moment, including Transformers and G.I. Joe, and he has two other highly anticipated films opening later this year. Steve recently sat down with the producer to talk about G.I. Joe: Retaliation, but di Bonaventura also spoke a bit about the action-comedy sequel Red 2 and Kenneth Branagh’s thriller Jack Ryan. Di Bonaventura talked about the new cast additions for Red 2 and his reaction to seeing the film, and he had nothing but praise for Chris Pine’s work as the titular character in Jack Ryan, also talking about the connection between this new film and the previous iterations of the Jack Ryan character. Hit the jump to read on.

With Red 2 opening this summer, Steve asked di Bonaventura how the film turned out. While he mentioned that they’ve yet to screen it for an audience, di Bonaventura is quite happy with the finished product:
“It’s really fun, it’s really good. I think the best measure of it is that all the cast members that we added—Byung Hun Lee, Catherine Zeta Jones, Anthony Hopkins, David Thewlis—we added some really great actors and they really killed it. So I think we made, I say ‘a richer broth.’ And [director] Dean [Parisot] has a great sense of comedy and there’s just some laugh-out-loud funny stuff in it. I really love it, but you never know what it’s gonna feel like until you show it to ...

New images have been released from the appropriately titled Jack Ryan reboot, Jack Ryan. Pine stars as the famous Tom Clancy character that was previously portrayed onscreen by Alec Baldwin (The Hunt for Red October), Harrison Ford (Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger), and Ben Affleck (The Sum of All Fears). This time around, Ryan is a Moscow-based financial analyst who faces off against his employer when he discovers a plot to finance a terrorist attack designed to collapse the U.S. economy. Kenneth Branagh directs and plays the film's villain, Keira Knightley is on board as Ryan's fiancée, and Kevin Costner plays a CIA liaison. Even though Branagh's character is Russian oligarch and a bit of a throwback to the protagonist's Cold War origins, the film takes place in the present day.

Hit the jump to check out the images. Jack Ryan opens December 25th.

In late October, somewhere in central London, I got to visit the set of director Kenneth Branagh’s Jack Ryan franchise reboot, aptly named "Jack Ryan" along with a few other online reporters. The film relaunches the famous Tom Clancy character that has previously been portrayed onscreen by Alec Baldwin (The Hunt for Red October), Harrison Ford (Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger), and Ben Affleck (The Sum of All Fears). This film finds Chris Pine’s ex-Marine Jack Ryan working as a Moscow-based financial analyst who uncovers a plot by his employer to finance a terrorist attack designed to collapse the U.S. economy. Branagh also plays the film’s villain, Keira Knightley is on board as the female lead, and Kevin Costner plays a CIA liaison.

While on set, I got to participate in some great interviews with the cast and filmmakers (the one with Costner was one of the best on set interviews I've ever done), and I learned a ton about the movie. Hit the jump for more.

Since Jack Ryan doesn't open for almost a year (December 25th), Paramount has only given me permission to write a preview piece. What that essentially means is I can say I went to set, had a good time, and you can look forward to some great stuff later this year.

However, shortly after getting back from set I recorded two video blogs with Peter from /Film. The first was a very detailed report of everything we saw and learned on set. As you might imagine, ...

Keira Knightley plays the title character in Anna Karenina, director Joe Wright’s bold, new romantic drama adaptation of the epic Tolstoy story of forbidden love set in 1874 Imperial Russia. The film, which opens in theaters on November 16th, marks the acclaimed director’s third collaboration with the Academy Award-nominated actress and also stars Jude Law and Aaron Taylor-Johnson.

At the film’s Los Angeles press day, Knightley talked about what drew her to the project, what about Wright’s vision made it stand out for her, why she saw Anna Karenina as a terrifying character, how she worked with the other actresses to create the impressive on-screen chemistry for the film’s female relationships, how her costumes played a pivotal role in telling her character’s story, why her film choices are all about story rather than where or when it’s set, and how she likes period, sci-fi and fantasy films as a dramatic tool. She also explained why she decided to move away from darker period pieces and do more contemporary films that are pure entertainment including the recently completed music drama, Can a Song Save Your Life?, and the large scale Tom Clancy thriller, Jack Ryan, directed by Kenneth Branagh, in which she stars opposite Chris Pine. Hit the jump to read the full interview.

Question: Thank you for giving us a Best Actress contender for the Oscars this year.

Keira Knightley: Oh, wow! Oh thank you! I’ll take that compliment. Thanks very much.

Opening this Friday is director Joe Wright’s adaptation of the classic Leo Tolstoy novel Anna Karenina. The film takes place in late 19th century Russian society and stars Keira Knightley as an adulterer who questions her happiness. In true Wright fashion, this isn’t exactly a straightforward adaptation; the director has set much of the film in a lush theater that uses over 100 interconnected sets to allow the action to move fluidly through a door and into a separate setting entirely. The film also stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Matthew Macfadyen, Kelly Macdonald, Domhnall Gleeson, Alicia Vikander, and Olivia Williams. For more on Anna Karenina, here's Matt's review, five clips, and all our previous coverage.

At the press day for the film, I spoke to Keira Knightley. We talked about her working relationship with Joe Wright (they've previously made Atonement and Pride & Prejudice), how she found out Wright wanted to tell the story in an unconventional way, her love of doing long takes, and why she wanted to do Kenneth Branagh's Jack Ryan. Hit the jump to watch.

Kiera Knightley:

Talks about how she found out Joe Wright was changing the way he wanted to tell the story
Talks about the way Wright has unique camera movements and his long takes
Talks about how she loves doing long takes without cuts
Why she wanted to be part of Jack Ryan

A reboot of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan character has been in the works for the past few years, but the project has now finally gotten off the ground under the direction of Kenneth Branagh as Jack Ryan is currently in production. Chris Pine steps into the role that was previously portrayed onscreen by Alec Baldwin (The Hunt for Red October), Harrison Ford (Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger), and Ben Affleck (The Sum of All Fears), and this time around the titular Jack Ryan is an ex-Marine working as a Moscow-based financial analyst. Conflict is set in motion when he uncovers a plot by his employer (Branagh, pulling double duty) to finance a terrorist attack designed to collapse the U.S. economy.

Keira Knightley is set as the film’s female lead, and Steve recently spoke with the actress at the Toronto Film Festival for her upcoming romantic drama adaptation Anna Karenina. Knightley talked about what incited her to do a large-scale thriller after dabbling in smaller budget fare over the past few years and how her affection for Branagh drew her to the project. Hit the jump to see what she had to say.

Knightley cited the somewhat dark nature of her past few projects as a motivation to do something a bit lighter in tone:
“I thought, ‘I think I’d quite like to do something that’s just entertainment’—not just entertainment, but entertainment in that kind of Hollywood sort of run-around, explosions [vein]. I’ve always loved thrillers; thrillers are incredibly difficult to do which is why there’s so few of them made now, ...

Though the film only just started production, we already got our first official look at Chris Pine and co-star Kevin Costner in the franchise reboot Jack Ryan earlier this month. Pine stars as the famous Tom Clancy character that was previously portrayed onscreen by Alec Baldwin (The Hunt for Red October), Harrison Ford (Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger), and Ben Affleck (The Sum of All Fears). This time around, Ryan is a Moscow-based financial analyst who faces off against his employer when he discovers a plot to finance a terrorist attack designed to collapse the U.S. economy. Kenneth Branagh directs and stars as the film’s villain, and today we have some images from the set that feature Branagh and Pine. There’s nothing particularly revealing here, but we do get our first look at Branagh in character.

Hit the jump to check out the images. The film also stars Keira Knightley and opens on Christmas Day, 2013.

Yesterday we brought you the first image of Chris Pine as a young Jack Ryan in Kenneth Branagh's Jack Ryan. Now, Paramount Pictures has given us the first look at Kevin Costner playing a legendary CIA field agent in the film. Jack Ryan puts Pine in the shoes of the famous Tom Clancy character that has previously been portrayed onscreen by Alec Baldwin (The Hunt for Red October), Harrison Ford (Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger), and Ben Affleck (The Sum of All Fears). This prequel finds Pine’s ex-Marine Jack Ryan working as a Moscow-based financial analyst who uncovers a plot by his employer to finance a terrorist attack designed to collapse the U.S. economy. Branagh not only directs, but stars as the villain with Keira Knightley also onboard as the female lead. Jack Ryan, currently shooting in downtown Manhattan, opens Christmas Day, 2013. Hit the jump to see the first look at Costner.

With production now firmly underway, Paramount Pictures has released the first image of Chris Pine as a young Jack Ryan in director Kenneth Branagh’s aptly named Jack Ryan. The film reboots the famous Tom Clancy character that has previously been portrayed onscreen by Alec Baldwin (The Hunt for Red October), Harrison Ford (Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger), and Ben Affleck (The Sum of All Fears). This prequel finds Pine’s ex-Marine Jack Ryan working as a Moscow-based financial analyst who uncovers a plot by his employer to finance a terrorist attack designed to collapse the U.S. economy. Branagh also plays the film’s villain, Keira Knightley is onboard as the female lead, and Kevin Costner recently signed on to play a CIA liason.

In this first image we see the shocking revelation that, in his younger days, Jack Ryan enjoyed riding motorcycles. Hit the jump to take a look. Jack Ryan opens on Christmas Day, 2013.

With production set to begin soon on Paramount’s Jack Ryan, a reboot of the Tom Clancy character that was previously played by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck, the studio has now set a prime Christmas Day 2013 release date for the thriller (per Box Office Mojo). Kenneth Branagh is onboard to both direct and star as the film’s villain in a story that finds Chris Pine’s ex-Marine Jack Ryan working as a Moscow-based financial analyst who uncovers a plot by his employer to finance a terrorist attack designed to collapse the U.S. economy. Keira Knightley is set as Ryan’s wife and Kevin Costner recently signed on to play Ryan’s CIA liason in what Paramount hopes is the first film in a trilogy.

Christmas 2013 is already filling up quickly, as Jack Ryan will go head-to-head with the samurai actioner 47 Ronin and Ben Stiller’s The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. Fox’s Walking with Dinosaurs opens a few days earlier, while Peter Jackson’s second film in The Hobbit trilogy hits theaters on December 13th.

You now have a rough date to mark on your calendar for the return of Jack Ryan, in the movie tentatively titled (you'll never guess) Jack Ryan. Deadline reports Paramount has scheduled the reboot for the fourth quarter of 2013, with the hope of kicking off a Jack Ryan trilogy led by Chris Pine, not to mention a spinoff that may star Tom Hardy as fellow spy John Clark. Kenneth Branagh will direct Jack Ryan and play the villain. Keira Knightley is the female lead, Jack’s wife Cathy. Kevin Costner recently accepted the role as the CIA liason to Jack Ryan and John Clark, which puts Costner in both Jack Ryan and the Clark-centric spinoff Without Remorse, and may even headline his own movie in due time.

But for now, let's focus on Jack Ryan. Hit the jump for story details.

Branagh recently described the concept as “an original story that allows us to understand how Jack Ryan develops into a CIA analyst, before joining, and perhaps even joining, the CIA. It’s a very contemporary action thriller set in the here and now.” The launching point---first mentioned in Tom Clancy's book The Hunt for Red October---is a helicopter crash that wiped out a Marine platoon. The 23-year-old Ryan was the only member to survive.

Paramount has been developing the reboot since at least 2009, shortly after Pine made a big splash in Paramount's very successful Star Trek reboot. Over the last three years, the script has passed through the hands of several screenwriters to ...

Paramount has been trying to reboot the Jack Ryan franchise for years now. The studio is finally beginning to make real progress---not only on the Jack Ryan movie starring Chris Pine, but also on the spinoff Without Remorse. The key was locking up Kenneth Branagh to direct and play the villain in the former. Kevin Costner has now accepted the offer to star in both films as the CIA liason for Jack Ryan and Without Remorse lead character John Clark. Christopher McQuarrie (Valkyrie) is in talks to write and direct Without Remorse, but it's this next bit of news that will excite the legions of This Means War fans out there: Deadline reports that Paramount is courting Tom Hardy to play John Clark. More after the jump.

This Means War digs aside, Paramount would be wise and lucky to anchor its spy franchise with Pine and Hardy, two of the handsomest young charmers in Hollywood. The report does not address Hardy's interest level, so we'll have to check back to see if the actor wants the part as much as I want him to take it.

Deadline describes Costner's character as "William Harper, a true blue American idealist who recruits and mentors both Ryan and John Kelly, the latter of whom becomes the CIA operative Clark by the end of Without Remorse." The deal reportedly includes an option for Costner to headline his own film in addition to his supporting role in the Jack Ryan movie and Without Remorse.

Essentially, if audiences are ready to invite ...

Actor Kenneth Branagh returns as Inspector Kurt Wallander, the moody Swedish detective created by mystery writer Henning Mankell, for three new 90-minute Wallander stories on Masterpiece Mystery! on PBS, starting September 9th. In Season 3, the depressed but fascinating cop tries to improve his disposition, while contending with torture killings, dashed romance, homicidal do-gooders and a resentful grown-up daughter.

During this recent exclusive interview with Collider, Kenneth Branagh talked about what he thinks makes Kurt Wallander one of the most popular detectives in the world, what fans can expect from this third series of movies, how having a woman in his life and some colleague changes at work affect the character, and that he’s hoping to do a fourth series of three films next year. He also talked about the new Jack Ryan film – an origin story that allows the audience to understand how Jack Ryan (played by Chris Pine) develops into a CIA analyst – which he is both directing and playing the villain in, said that he expects to shoot from the beginning of September until Christmas, and that he thinks it’s unlikely he will shoot in either IMAX or 3D, but that he would like to do an IMAX 3D Shakespeare film. Check out what he had to say after the jump.

Collider: What do you think it is that’s made Kurt Wallander one of the most popular and fascinating detectives in the world?

As director Kenneth Branagh moves closer to production on his Jack Ryan reboot, it appears that the female lead role has now been filled. We previously reported that Keira Knightley, Felicity Jones, and Evangeline Lilly were in the running to star opposite Chris Pine in the reboot of the classic Tom Clancy character. Now Heat Vision reports that Knightley has entered negotiations to star as Pine’s wife in the film, which the report now refers to as Jack Ryan. Hit the jump for more.

Pine inhabits the character of Jack Ryan, which has previously been played by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, and Ben Affleck. This franchise-starter that finds the ex-Marine and Moscow-based financial analyst uncovering a plot by his employer to finance a terrorist attack designed to collapse the U.S. economy. Branagh will be pulling double-duty as the film’s director and villain, and now Knightley is stepping into her first franchise post-Pirates of the Caribbean.

Per Heat Vision, Branagh and producers auditioned a number of actresses for the role a few weeks ago before “re-engaging” Knightley, whom they had initially approached for the part. The actress moved back to smaller-scale films once she wrapped the third entry in the Pirates franchise, and she’s had memorable turns in recent dramas like Never Let Me Go and A Dangerous Method.

She most recently took a stab at a more comedic character in Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, but one assumes Branagh’s strong theater background attracted her to the large-scale actioner Jack Ryan. ...

Though Kenneth Branagh is currently gearing up to direct a reboot of the Jack Ryan character starring Chris Pine, Paramount is looking to spinoff a different character from Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan series into his own feature. Christopher McQuarrie has been tapped to adapt Clancy’s 1993 novel Without Remorse, which centers on the John Clark character. Clark was portrayed by Willem Dafoe in Clear and Present Danger and Liev Schreiber in 2002 The Sum of All Fears.

McQuarrie, who directed the Tom Cruise-fronted Lee Child adaptation One Shot that opens later this year, will write the script with an eye towards directing Without Remorse as well. Hit the jump for more, including the possibility of an Avengers-style crossover between films.

An adaptation of Without Remorse has been in development for a number of years, with the most recent iteration of the script written by The Shield’s Shawn Ryan. The issue has been making the graphically violent and dark material from the novel work in a commercial feature film. The story tells the origin/beginnings of Clark, as John Kelly (his real name before he was deemed John Clark) teams up with a prostitute following the tragic demise of his pregnant wife to take down a drug cartel who uses exploitable women as drug mules. The plot weaves in and out of many harrowing and disturbing scenarios, following Kelly on an attempt to rescue American pilots from a prison camp in North Vietnam.

Paramount is hoping that McQuarrie can make the story palatable for a ...

Kevin Costner (Dances with Wolves) is being courted for substantial roles in a pair of upcoming films. While Costner's recent work was on the small screen in the History channel's Hatfields & McCoys, he'll next be seen on the big screen as Pa Kent in Zack Snyder's Man of Steel. Now, reports have Costner being courted for Kenneth Branagh's Jack Ryan film reboot which stars Chris Pine, as well as a Luc Besson production, Three Days to Kill. Hopefully this is a kickstart to seeing more of Costner in features again. More on both of these projects after the jump.

Deadline reports that Costner is being sought to star in the Jack Ryan reboot in a new role that's being compared to that of James Earl Jones' Admiral Greer. As the reboot is seen as a prequel to the previous Jack Ryan films, Jones may actually appear. Costner's role has reportedly been created as a sort of mentor and recruiter of a young Jack Ryan.

Another role that Costner is being offered is that of a dying assassin in Three Days to Kill. Compared to Liam Neeson's fantastic turn in Taken, the action drama was scripted by Besson and Adi Hasak. The report also has McG circling to direct. The picture is set in France and features Costner as Ethan Renner, a government assassin with a terminal condition. Before his departure, Renner chooses to take on one last mission and find a way to reconcile with his daughter. (There has to be some ...

The reboot of the Jack Ryan franchise has lingered in development for years now. Chris Pine has been attached since 2009 and watched director Jack Bender come and go as the months passed. Though there is still no title, the project is finally making significant forward progress now that Kenneth Branagh signed on to direct and play the villain. With the hero and the antagonist set, the next task for Branagh and Paramount is to decide on the female lead to play Jack's wife Cathy. Deadline hears Keira Knightley is the frontrunner for the role, but Felicity Jones and Evangeline Lilly are also in the mix. Total Recall co-stars Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel also met for the role, but are reportedly no longer in the running. Whoever lands the role would sign a deal with options for three movies. Hit the jump for more on the story.

At this stage of the character's life, Jack Ryan is an ex-Marine who now works as a financial analyst in Moscow. Here's the logline we have:
“He discovers a plot by his employer to finance a terrorist attack designed to collapse the U.S. economy, and must race against time to save America and his wife.”
As the story goes, part of the holdup in development can be attributed to three different visions for the project. Pine wants a character-driven spy movie, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura wants an action movie, and Paramount wants a thriller. The most recent draft of the script by David Koepp (Spider-Man) ...
