Here's today's latest casting news:

Chris Pine (Star Trek) and Jake Gyllenhaal (Donnie Darko) are in discussions to join Into the Woods, the Rob Marshall-adaptation of the Broadway musical that stars Johnny Depp and Meryl Streep.
Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained) has joined Stephen Gaghan's The Candy Store, which stars Robert De Niro, Jason Clake and Omar Sy.
RZA (The Man with the Iron Fists) and Catalina Denis (Sleepless Night) will join Paul Walker in Brick Mansions, the Camille Delamarre-directed remake of Luc Besson's District B13.

Hit the jump for more on each casting announcement.

First up with news of Pine and Gyllenhaal circling the musical Into the Woods, Heat Vision reports that no offers have been made yet but each actor has met with and sang for Marshall. If deals are made, both Pine and Gyllenhaal would book their first on-screen singing roles. This darkly comic mash-up of classic fairy tales revolves around a childless baker and his wife, who journey into the woods to confront the witch that put the spell on them in order to lift a family curse, while encountering a group of characters including Rapunzel, Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood, along the way.

Streep will play the juicy role of the vain and silver-tongued Witch and Depp will play a sexed-up version of a hungry fairy tale wolf. Gyllenhaal and Pine are expected to play two princes - Cinderella’s and Rapunzel’s - brothers who are pompous and self-absorbed. Production is planned to start this fall, but the picture is expected to attract more ...

Check out the latest casting news below:

Scarlett Johansson (The Avengers) is set to lead the new action flick from writer/director Luc Besson (The Fifth Element) titled Lucy. Besson once again features a female ass-kicker in the lead and puts a new spin on drug mule stories with this new script.
Jake Gyllenhaal (Donnie Darko) and Rene Russo (Ransom) will star in writer/director Dan Gillroy's indie, Nightcrawler. The story centers on a young freelance journalist who explores L.A. by night while working the crime beat.

Hit the jump for more.

Heat Vision reports that Johansson is in final negotiations to lead Besson's Lucy. The title character "is a woman who is forced to become a drug mule. But the drug instead goes into her system, transforming her into an ass-kicking machine. She can absorb knowledge instantaneously, is able to move objects with her mind and can't feel pain and other discomforts." Johansson certainly has ass-kicking training down after her stints as Black Widow in both The Avengers and the upcoming Captain America: The Winter Soldier. She is currently filming the Cap sequel and would move onto Lucy after wrapping.

Variety reports that Gyllenhaal will lead Nightcrawler with Russo co-starring. The film will be the directorial debut of Dan Gillroy, who co-wrote The Bourne Legacy with his brother, Tony Gillroy; the duo will co-produce the thriller. Gyllenhaal will be seen later this year opposite Hugh Jackman in Denis Villeneuve's Prisoners, and may replace Jude Law in Gavin O'Connor's Jane Got a Gun, which recently got off to a rocky start.

The Western Jane Got a Gun has gotten off to a bit of a rough start. The film was to begin production this past Monday, but director Lynne Ramsay abruptly left the project by reportedly not showing up for the first day of filming, leaving the pic in a state of uncertainty. Gavin O’Connor (Warrior) was quickly brought in to replace Ramsay, but then Jude Law dropped out of the project as a result of Ramsay’s departure, leaving the film without a villain. Natalie Portman is poised to star as a woman whose outlaw husband returns home riddled with bullets, spurring her to team up with her ex-lover (Joel Edgerton) in order to seek revenge against the man responsible (the villain role yet to be cast).

With production apparently back underway, O’Connor and the film’s producers are scrambling to replace Law as quickly as possible. A new report has surfaced suggesting that they’re casting a pretty wide net to fill the role, as Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey Maguire, and Jeff Bridges are among those being considered. Hit the jump for more.

The LA Times reports that O’Connor is looking to find someone with an international brand “who also looks good in a hat” to fill the film’s villain role, with Gyllenhaal, Maguire, and Bridges among those being considered. The edge would seemingly be with Gyllenhaal or Maguire since they’re closer in age to Law and they’ve both worked with Portman before in Brothers, but Bridges could be a nice left field choice as well. ...

Alcon Entertainment and Warner Bros. have announced the start of production of director Denis Villeneuve’s (Incedies) dramatic thriller Prisoners. The film stars Hugh Jackman as a working-class Boston father who sets out to track down the man he believes is responsible for kidnapping his daughter and her friend. Along the way, he runs up against the big city detective (Jake Gyllenhaal) assigned to the case. Filming is underway in Georgia, with an impressive supporting cast that includes Paul Dano, Maria Bello, Terrence Howard, and Viola Davis.

The screenplay was written by Aaron Guzikowski (Contraband), and Mark Wahlberg is onboard as one of the film’s executive producers. Moreover, genius cinematographer Roger Deakins (Skyfall, No Country for Old Men) is handling the camera work. Hit the jump to read the full press release. Prisoners opens on September 20th of this year.

Here’s the press release:
BURBANK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Principal photography is underway on location in Georgia for Alcon Entertainment’s “Prisoners,” a Warner Bros. Pictures’ release starring Oscar®nominees Hugh Jackman (“Les Misérables”) and Jake Gyllenhaal (“Brokeback Mountain”), under the direction of Denis Villeneuve, who helmed the Oscar®-nominated foreign language film “Incendies.”

How far would you go to protect your child? Keller Dover (Jackman) is facing every parent’s worst nightmare. His six-year-old daughter, Anna, is missing, together with her young friend, Joy, and as minutes turn to hours, panic sets in. The only lead is a dilapidated RV that had earlier been parked on their street. Heading the investigation, Detective Loki (Gyllenhaal) arrests its driver, Alex Jones (Paul Dano), ...

Writer/director David Ayer has more than a passing familiarity with the heroes and villains of law enforcement. He's been behind the pen of Training Day, S.W.A.T., Dark Blue and Harsh Times, while stepping behind the camera for the latter film, as well as Street Kings. His latest effort, End of Watch, has him pulling double duty, but giving up some camera control to his principal leads Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña. In bringing some aspects of "found footage" into an action movie following two street cops on their daily grind, Ayer has managed to find another layer of realism that makes his films so enjoyable. Hit the jump for our breakdown of End of Watch on Blu-ray, including the highlight of Ayer's directorial commentary that makes the film easily worth a repeat viewing.

End of Watch follows Officers Brian Taylor (Gyllenhaal) and Mike Zavala (Peña) from the LAPD locker room to the streets of Newton to Quinceaneras, weddings, medal ceremonies, births and deaths. If Ayer had chosen to go with a straight "good guys vs bad guys" story, End of Watch would still have been enjoyable, but on fewer levels. It's the scenes of Taylor and Zavala swapping anecdotes or dating advice in the patrol car or of the officers leaving the job behind for the day in order to be with their families...it's these scenes which humanize the characters and help you sympathize with them at the end of the day. End of Watch isn't just a term meaning the daily shift is over; ...

First up, Slater and Long will join Undiscovered Gyrl, along with Martin Sheen, Robert Patrick and Kimberly Williams-Paisley. The picture features Britt Robertson (Dan in Real Life) as a teen who holds off on college for a year in order to find herself. Left with daddy issues due to her alcoholic father (Patrick), she engages in sexual relationships with "a young film professor (Long), the father of a baby for whom she nannies (Slater), and a rare book dealer with a dark past (Sheen). She voyeuristically chronicles her adventures in a blog, but her life spirals out of control when pieces of the past begin to emerge."

A couple of casting headlines for you today:

Paul Dano (Looper) will join Hugh Jackman (Real Steel) and Jake Gyllenhaal (End of Watch) in the vigilante thriller, Prisoners, directed by Denis Villeneuve (Incendies).
Ron Perlman (Hellboy) has joined the psychological thriller, Angry Little God, from director Daniel Stamm (The Last Exorcism).

Hit the jump for more on these casting assignments and the movies themselves.

We recently reported that Gyllenhaal was confirmed to star in Prisoners and now Alcon Entertainment announces that Dano is also on-board. The Aaron Guzikowski (Contraband) script centers on "a small-town carpenter (Jackman) whose young daughter and best friend are kidnapped. After the cops fail to find them, he takes the law into his own hands but in the process runs up against the big-city detective (Gyllenhaal) assigned to the case." Prisoners, which is scheduled to begin production in early 2013 with an expected fall 2013 release, also stars Melissa Leo (The Fighter).

THR reports that Perlman will join the cast of Angry Little God, along with other recent additions Pruitt Taylor Vince (Constantine), Tom Bower (Die Hard 2) and Devon Graye (Legendary). The film, which began principal photography last week, is toplined by Mark Webber (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) and Rutina Wesley (True Blood). A remake of the Thai film, 13: Game of Death, Angry Little Gods centers on a man whose money troubles seem over when a mysterious caller tells him he's on a hidden camera game show and will win a fortune if he completes 13 tasks. The man soon finds he's bitten off more than he can chew as each task becomes more horrific than the ...

Hot off the somewhat surprising box office success of his small-budget cop drama End of Watch, Jake Gyllenhaal is looking to don his police uniform yet again. Variety reports that Gyllenhaal is in talks to star opposite Hugh Jackman in the vigilante thriller Prisoners. Jackman stars as a working-class Boston father who sets out to track down the man he believes is responsible for kidnapping his daughter and her friend. Along the way, he runs up against the big city detective assigned to the case. Gyllenhaal is looking to take on the role of said detective, with Melissa Leo also poised to star in the film for director Denis Villeneuve (Incendies).

Gyllenhaal just recently wrapped filming on Villeneuve’s An Enemy, so he already has a relationship with the director. Production on Prisoners is set to begin in early 2013 after Jackman completes The Wolverine, with an eye towards a Fall 2013 release. [Update: Gyllenhaal has been confirmed for Prisoners. Hit the jump for the full press release.]

Last night, I managed to squeeze in a double feature of Dredd 3D and The Master. While I wasn't thrilled with the prospect of not having a 2D showing available to choose from, I have to admit that director Pete Travis' film provided me with my first 3D screening since 2010's Piranha 3D that actually felt worth the extra dimension and additional ticket price. As for The Master, it's probably unfair to judge something so heavy after a single viewing. That said, my initial reaction is that I can't remember watching a film where its individual parts so far exceed the sum the first time around. From top to bottom the pic's technicality is superb. And yet, I don't see myself in any hurry to revisit Paul Thomas Anderson's latest world.
Moving forward to the reason we're all here, in this week's episode of the Top 5, The Hobbit celebrates Tolkien Week in a big way with a new trailer and images, we get our first looks at a new suit from director Jose Padilha's Robocop reboot, Steve sits down to talk End of Watch with Jake Gyllenhaal, Anna Kendrick, and more, Kick-Ass 2 set images continue to roll out while Aaron Johnson talks about the film at TIFF, and Fantastic Fest 2012 kicks off. Continue reading for a brief recap and link to each.

Welcome to another disappointing weekend at the domestic box office. Four new titles debuted on Friday, but none is expected to reach $15 million by Sunday. That means that overall profits will be down for the fifth frame in a row. Despite the low grosses, Friday’s top five contained a few surprises. Few expected big things from End of Watch, the cop drama starring Jake Gyllenhaal; but after posting a Friday estimate of $4.6 million from just 2,730 runs, the R-rated indie has a shot at winning the weekend with a projected $13.5 million. Relativity’s House at the End of the Street was also a surprise ‘hit’ on Friday, earning an estimated $4.64 million from 3,083 locations to edge out End of Watch for first. The PG-13 thriller with Jennifer Lawrence is expected to fall in the rankings this weekend, but should still end up with $13 million for its first three days. Meanwhile, the film that was supposed to eclipse both of these smaller-releases – Warner Brother’s Trouble with the Curve – will struggle to match them this weekend. The baseball drama starring Clint Eastwood earned $4.1 million from 3,212 locations on Friday, making it unlikely that the PG-13 pic will reach the $18 million first-weekend that was projected. Finally, an enthusiastic reception at Comic-Con promised a solid opening for Lionsgate’s 3D comic reboot Dredd 3D. Instead, the R-rated feature took in just $2.2 million for what looks like a dismal $6.5 million first weekend. We’ll have full details ...

Opening this weekend is director David Ayer’s (Harsh Times) police thriller End of Watch. The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña as two Los Angeles beat cops who find themselves marked for death after a routine traffic stop turns into an epic drug bust that interferes with a notorious cartel. Unlike Ayer’s previous films which focused on corrupt police officers, Gyllenhaal and Peña play honest cops trying to make a difference. In addition, most of the movie was filmed with handheld cameras, and Ayer’s POV shots put the audience right in the middle of the action. Trust me, End of Watch is definitely worth your time and the chemistry between Gyllenhaal and Peña is a lot of fun. For more on the film, here’s Matt’s review, my video interview with David Ayer, twenty things to know from my set visit, and all our previous coverage. End of Watch also stars Anna Kendrick, Natalie Martinez, America Ferrera, Cody Horn and Frank Grillo.

Last week at the Toronto Film Festival I was able to speak with Jake Gyllenhaal. During our fun exchange we talked about the unique camerawork in End of Watch, what he learned from making the movie, the training and short shooting schedule, why he missed Comic-Con, fashion week, and a lot more. Hit the jump to watch.

Jake Gyllenhaal:

Lots of joking around from weight loss, fashion week, and why he missed the End of Watch comic-con panel
Talks about the unique camerawork and what he learned from the process
Talks about the training and the short shooting schedule

David Ayer's cop action flick End of Watch is consumed by found-footage gimmick it doesn't need. The device feels forced upon the story, and is applied in such a haphazard fashion that its presence only become more of a distraction. Audiences don't need a reason for certain camera angles; they need good characters, and End of Watch has them with great performances from lead actors Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña. The movie is driven by character, and while the camera-tricks vie for our attention, it's the relationship between two beat cops that holds our interest.

Officers Brian Taylor (Gyllenhaal) and Dell "Z" Zavala (Peña) work the streets of South Central Los Angeles. In a painfully flimsy excuse for the found-footage device, Taylor is currently taking pre-law classes, and for his art elective he's doing filmmaking. That's why he's able to put little cameras on himself and his partner, and carry a camcorder around on the beat. While there is a bit of a plot concerning the two cops coming into the crosshairs of a Mexican cartel, the majority of the movie is just Taylor and Z taking calls, goofing off around the department, shooting the breeze, and saving the day.

End of Watch is meant to draw us into the day-to-day of police life, but the demands of a film mean that not only do they have to skip over the boring stuff (although there is a brief scene of the cops doing paperwork), but the events have to outdo your standard ...

We here at Collider are happy to debut a new image from director David Ayer’s (Harsh Times) police thriller End of Watch. The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña as two Los Angeles beat cops who get in over their heads when they decide to independently take down a drug operation. I caught some footage from the film at Comic-Con and thought it looked great. Much of the movie was filmed with handheld cameras, and Ayer’s POV shots put the audience right in the middle of the action. Instead of another cliché-driven “corrupt cops” drama, End of Watch really focuses on the honest, dangerous work of everyday police officers. Moreover, the chemistry between Gyllenhaal and Peña is a lot of fun (watch a great clip right here).

Hit the jump to check out the new image, in which Gyllenhaal gets fairly intense. The film also stars Anna Kendrick, America Ferrera, Frank Grillo, and Natalie Martinez. End of Watch opens on September 21st.

Here’s the synopsis for End of Watch:
From the writer of Training Day, END OF WATCH is a riveting action thriller that puts audiences at the center of the chase like never before. Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña star as young LA police officers who discover a secret that makes them the target of the country's most dangerous drug cartel.

Many projects go through growing pains during development. James Cameron’s Titanic was labeled the biggest bomb of all time before it even hit theaters, Martin Sheen had a heart attack during the year-long shoot of Apocalypse Now, and filming on Men in Black 3 halted for a few months so that they could work on the script. David O. Russell’s Nailed, however, was a bona fide production nightmare. The film has yet to be finished and it’s unlikely it’ll ever see the light of day, but none of this is the fault of the creatives involved.

The political comedy satire was filmed in 2008 with Jessica Biel, Jake Gyllenhaal, Catherine Keener, and Tracy Morgan and centered on three people with serious health issues that stormed Washington D.C. to demand treatment. Production was shut down multiple times during filming, and just as Russell was getting to the filming of the film’s centerpiece scene the project was shut down for good. The story behind Nailed’s filming and subsequent permanent limbo is stranger than fiction, and Steve recently got a lot of background on what exactly went down from producers Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher (of Red Wagon Entertainment) when he spoke with them in anticipation of the release of Lawless. Hit the jump for the full story.

Nailed was to be Wick and Fisher’s first foray into independent films. They had previously found success on pics like Jarhead, Peter Pan, and Stuart Little, and they were trying their hand at an indie. Problems ...

Writer/director David Ayer (Street Kings) is bringing his crime drama End of Watch into theaters on September 21st. While we saw the violent side of Los Angeles law enforcement in the red-band trailer, this second trailer focuses on the partnership and importance of family for Officer Taylor (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Officer Zavala (Michael Peña). The duo finds themselves marked for death after a routine traffic stop turns into an epic drug bust that interferes with a notorious cartel. End of Watch also stars Anna Kendrick, America Ferrera, Cody Horn and Frank Grillo. Hit the jump to watch the new trailer.

Check out the new trailer after the official synopsis for End of Watch:
A powerful story of family, friendship, love, honor and courage, End Of Watch stars Academy Award(R) nominee Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena as young Los Angeles police officers Taylor and Zavala as they patrol the city’s meanest streets of south central Los Angeles. Giving the story a gripping, first-person immediacy, the action unfolds through footage from the handheld HD cameras of the police officers, gang members, surveillance cameras, and citizens caught in the line of fire to create a riveting portrait of the city’s most dangerous corners, the cops who risk their lives there every day, and the price they and their families are forced to pay.

Open Road has released a red band trailer for End of Watch. Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena star as two Los Angeles beat cops who get in over their heads when they decide to independently take down a drug operation. At the very least, End of Watch will look way different than your typical cop drama. Writer/director David Ayers (Street Kings) employs some found footage angles, but isn't chained to the format, which makes for a unique, ambitious aesthetic. And it's hard to go wrong with Gyllenhaal and Pena as your leads, though this trailer is sadly light on affable co-star Anna Kendrick compared to the green band trailer. Natalie Martinez, Frank Grillo, America Ferrera, and David Harbour also star.

End of Watch opens on September 21. Watch the red band trailer after the jump.

Open Road has released four new images from the police thriller End of Watch. The movie stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña as two Los Angeles beat cops who get in over their heads when they decide to independently take down a drug operation. I was unimpressed by the trailer, but I really dug the footage shown at Comic-Con this past Saturday. Both clips we saw had time to breathe even though their content couldn't have been more different. One clip was just Gyllenhaal and Peña's characters chatting in their car (showing off their great chemistry), and the other was a cool chase scene done entirely from the perspective of inside their vehicle. End of Watch is now a flick that I'll definitely be keeping on my radar.

Hit the jump to check out the images. The film also stars Anna Kendrick, Frank Grillo, and America Ferrera. End of Watch opens September 28th.

The first clip from director David Ayer’s (Harsh Times) latest cop drama, End of Watch, has landed online, and odds are you’ll probably be taken aback by its tone. The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña as a couple of uniformed police officers who overstep their bounds when they decide to investigate a drug cartel and end up becoming targets. Ayer shot much of the film with handheld cameras and rigs hooked up to the actors that give the audiences POV shots. They screened three clips at the film’s Comic-Con panel, and this one that’s been released to the public is actually really funny. Gyllenhaal and Peña have a back and forth while busting each other’s balls, and the chemistry between the two is great. Ayer revealed at Comic-Con that this scene was entirely improvised on set. I definitely liked what I saw from the panel, and hopefully the full film delivers the goods.

Hit the jump to watch the clip. The film also stars Anna Kendrick America Ferrera, Frank Grillo, and Natalie Martinez. End of Watch opens on September 28th.

Following Quentin Tarantino is no easy task, but director David Ayer did just that Saturday afternoon in Hall H at Comic-Con for his latest cop drama End of Watch. The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena as two beat cops who stumble upon some surprising information that makes them targets of a drug cartel. Though Ayer’s previous films (he wrote Training Day and wrote and directed 2006’s Harsh Times) focus on corrupted officers of the law, End of Watch is a change of pace in that Gyllenhaal and Pena play honest, hard-working cops just trying to do their job well.

Though I figured I pretty much knew what I was in for with the film, the footage and panel from Comic-Con really got me enthused for a type of cop drama that we haven’t seen in a very long time. Hit the jump to read my full recap of the End of Watch panel at Comic-Con 2012. [Full disclosure: Collider editor-in-chief Steve Weintraub was the moderator for this panel.]

The panel kicked off by first showing the trailer for the film. If you haven’t seen it, what’s most striking is that it’s shot in a documentary style with a lot of handheld. They even created camera rigs specifically to be hooked up to the actors to give the audience a “point-of-view” shot.

Weintraub then introduced Pena and Ayer, the latter of whom told the audience that the last time he was in San Diego, he was ...
