First Red-Band Trailer for SEX TAPE Starring Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel

Sony Pictures has released the first Sex Tape red-band trailer.  Director Jake Kasdan‘s (Bad Teacher) comedy stars Jason Segel and Cameron Diaz as a couple who, after discovering that their three-hour intimate video has accidentally been uploaded to the cloud, set out to delete the video from the iPads of their friends and family and ensure that their reputations aren’t ruined.  Segel and Diaz look to have solid chemistry as the lead comedic duo, and it’s promising to see that the film isn’t shying away from its R-rating.  There are a few comedic tropes glimpsed in this trailer that are well-worn territory, but Kasdan certainly has the capacity to go the unexpected route (see: Walk Hard), so hopefully Sex Tape avoids delving into too many cliches.

Hit the jump to watch the debut trailer.  The film also stars Rob Corddry, Ellie Kemper, and Rob LoweSex Tape opens on July 25th.

New Images from SEX TAPE Starring Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel and ANNIE Starring Jamie Foxx

Sony Pictures has unveiled new images from two very different Cameron Diaz films slated for release this year.  First up is director Jake Kasdan’s (Bad Teacher) comedy Sex Tape, which stars Diaz and Jason Segel as a couple who, after discovering that their three-hour intimate video has been stolen, set out to recover the tape and ensure that their reputations aren’t ruined.  These images give us a first look at the ensemble beyond Diaz and Segel, as we see Rob Lowe, Ellie Kemper, and Rob CorddrySex Tape opens in theaters July 25th.

The other Cameron Diaz film is director Will Gluck’s (Easy A) musical redo Annie, in which Diaz takes on the role of the mean Miss Hannigan.  The young Quvenzhane Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild) takes on the title role as an orphan who is taken in by a New York mayoral candidate (Jamie Foxx) in a thinly veiled campaign move.  The film’s first trailer promised a few full musical numbers, and these images tease just that.  Annie opens in theaters December 25th.

First Look at Jason Segel and Cameron Diaz in SEX TAPE

Jason Segel and Cameron Diaz “made a sex tape,” and our first preview of the finished product is now online.  The two star in director Jake Kasdan’s (Bad Teacher) upcoming comedy Sex Tape, which revolves around a couple who, after discovering that their three-hour intimate video has been stolen, set out to recover the tape and ensure that their reputations aren’t ruined.  This first image from the pic gives us a tease of what that sex tape may entail, as Diaz is seen in bed sporting a pair of roller skates (one assumes she’s just really into Boogie Nights).  Segel co-wrote the screenplay with Kasdan and Kate Angelo, and as a big fan of Kasdan’s Walk Hard—not to mention the impressive comedic abilities of Segel and Diaz—I’m very much looking forward to seeing what they’ve cooked up for this new film.  Expect a debut trailer soon.

Jason Segel to Play David Foster Wallace Opposite Jesse Eisenberg in THE END OF THE TOUR; James Ponsoldt to Direct

by     Posted 133 days ago

jason segel jesse eisenberg end of the tour

Jason Segel and Jesse Eisenberg are attached to star in The End of the Tour, an adaptation of journalist David Lipsky‘s account of his five-day trip with David Foster Wallace during the last leg of the Infinite Jest book tour in 1996.  I picture many long conversations in hotel rooms, but the book synopsis notes a few adventures for Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Donald Margulies to spice up the road trip script including a dash to the airport, an encounter with a “terrible reader,” and a Baptist church dance.

Segel is attached to play Wallace—Eisenberg will play Lipsky.  According to The Wrap, James Ponsoldt (The Spectacular Now) is attached to direct.  Segel vs. Eisenberg and the focused biopic angle were likely enough, but signing Ponsoldt locks The End of the Tour as a project I look forward to.  Production is tentatively scheduled to begin in February or March.  Read the book synopsis after the break.

Sony Pictures has just acquired a stranger-than-fiction pitch that will see Jason Segel playing a maple syrup thief.  Inspired by real events reported by Anne Sutherland in the Montreal Gazette, the film chronicles the 2012 heist of over $20 million worth of maple syrup that was stolen from Quebec’s Federation of Maple Syrup Producers (this is a real thing that exists).  As of now, over 20 individuals have been arrested in connection to the maple syrup crime (also a thing that exists).  Segel is attached to star and Horrible Bosses director Seth Gordon is onboard to direct.  Hit the jump for more.

Sony Moving Forward with BAD TEACHER 2; Cameron Diaz Expected to Return

bad-teacher-2-sequel

Sony Pictures is putting the wheels in motion for a sequel to the 2011 comedy Bad Teacher.  The studio announced today that it is developing Bad Teacher 2 with Jake Kasdan returning to direct and Justin Malen writing the script.  The first film starred Cameron Diaz as a rough-around-the-edges gold digging middle school teacher who tried to play nice in order to win a cash prize that would pay for breast implants.  Though a little uneven on the comedy side, the film was funny enough and featured a stand out performance from Lucy Punch.

It was also a box office success, bringing in $216 million worldwide—pretty impressive for an R-rated comedy.  While Diaz has yet to sign a deal to return for the follow-up, the project is being developed for her to star.  Hit the jump for more on the sequel and the Bad Teacher TV show.

THIS IS THE END Review

Judd Apatow‘s past collaborators have exceeded him.  Left to make a movie without his direct oversight, stars Seth Rogen, James Franco, Jay Baruchel, Jonah Hill, Danny McBride, and Craig Robinson have made a film with the influence of Apatow’s past work, but none of his recent weaknesses.  That’s not to say that these actors are only indebted to Apatow or that their comic talent came from working with the successful writer/director/producer.  But they’ve all worked with him in the past, and their latest effort, guided by a script and direction from Rogen and Evan Goldberg, leaves behind comic one-upmanship and endless riffing to provide a balanced comic dynamic that’s able to navigate a loose plot to big laughs.

New Trailer for THIS IS THE END Starring Seth Rogen, James Franco, Jay Baruchel, Danny McBride, Jonah Hill, and Craig Robinson

After the first red-band trailer debuted earlier this week, a new green-band trailer for Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg‘s This Is the End is now available.  The film definitely looks funny, but I’m wondering how long the premise of celebrity-self-parody can last.  Usually, this kind of performance is a cameo, but This Is the End is all about Rogen, Jonah Hill, James Franco, Danny McBride, Jay Baruchel, and Craig Robinson playing “versions” of themselves.  I’m assuming that as long as the quips and jokes keep coming as quickly as they do in this trailer, then the self-parody won’t wear out its welcome.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film also stars Jason Segel, Michael Cera, Emma Watson, Paul Rudd, Mindy Kaling, Kevin Hart, Aziz Ansari, Martin Starr, and more.  This Is the End opens June 12th.

THIS IS 40 Blu-ray Review

It’s weird to think we’re only four movies in to Judd Apatow’s directing career, because for the last ten years he’s become a brand.  Between working with Adam McKay and Will Ferrell on their comedies, to launching Seth Rogen and Kristen Wiig (and more), he established that he was one of the biggest forces in comedy.  But his most recent film, This is 40, came out and it didn’t feel like event.  It’s a modest film that’s enjoyable enough, but feels like a B side.  Our review of This is 40 follows after the jump.

When you watch a Judd Apatow film like This Is 40, you expect a certain level of comedy to come from improv.  In the case of Apatow’s most recent comedy, the blooper reel happens to be funnier than most of the scenes in the movie itself.  Featuring outtakes from Paul Rudd, Leslie Mann, Jason Segel, Megan Fox and more, the nearly four-minute laugher track is presumably but a sampling of all the additional footage shot for This is 40. HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER Renewed for Ninth and Final Season; Entire Cast Will Return

by     Posted 1 year, 121 days ago

The producers of the wildly popular CBS comedy How I Met Your Mother finally have an answer as to the fate of their series.  Creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas began writing the current eighth season as if it would be the show’s last, and they’ve been patiently waiting for the network to come down with an answer regarding whether or not they needed to plan for one more season, or wrap things up in May.  Dealing was complicated as contracts for both Bays and Thomas as well as the entire cast were up at the end of this year, but CBS made no secret of the fact that they would be keen on ordering another full season for the ratings-smash show if all the deals could be renegotiated.

Now it looks like the long-awaited answer to the statement posed in the title won’t come until 2014, as How I Met Your Mother has been renewed for a ninth and final season.  Hit the jump for more details.

THIS IS 40 Review

this-is-40-leslie mann paul rudd

It’s not all gold, Mr. Apatow.  The logic behind his films seems to be, “If it got big laughs at a test screening, we should probably keep it.”  Therefore, the editing isn’t decided on how best to tell the story, but how many jokes they can stuff into a borderline-ridiculous runtime.  If this is the case, then there must be an absolute certainty that the jokes are all terrific, and that it doesn’t detract from the characters or the plot.  You can have the “Know how I know you’re gay?” scene in The 40-Year-Old Virgin because it’s funny, it doesn’t slow the film down, and it doesn’t detract from overall narrative.  This Is 40, Judd Apatow‘s latest film, lacks any such cohesion.  As nothing more than a slice-of-life, it’s free to wander around aimlessly, sometimes running up against great jokes, and sometimes meandering through scenes that could be cut completely.  More frustrating, beneath the sporadic success of the humor, there’s a compelling story and strong performances, especially from Leslie Mann.  Unfortunately, This Is 40 works in reverse, trying to let a story flow out of humorous situations rather than vice-versa.
