In a move that surprises no one, HBO has renewed its highly discussed, popular and divisive series Girls for a third season with an expanded episode count, totaling twelve. The series was already brought back early this year (returning in January after premiering last spring in April with the sharp political comedy Veep), and HBO seems eager to ride the zeitgeist wave and bring even more of the series as fast as it can.

Elsewhere, the premium cable channel has ordered a half-hour pilot from Jay and Mark Duplass who are set to write, direct and produce (though not star or appear in) the series called Togetherness. Togetherness will focus on two couples living under one roof, working through their relationships and pursuing their dreams. Hit the jump for more.

HBO, known primarily for its great dramatic content, seems to be putting more of an emphasis on comedic programming moving forward. In addition to the renewal ofGirls, Veep and Enlightened as well as the Duplass brothers' pilot, they've also optioned an untitled pilot about a group of gay friends in San Francisco, as well as a series from Girls writer Bruce Eric Kaplan called People in New Jersey. Stephen Merchant, Ricky Gervais' Office writer partner and co-star of The Ricky Gervais Show on HBO, will also be getting his own comedy series, Hello Ladies.

Mark Duplass is probably best known as his portrayal of normal(-ish) guy Pete on FX's fantasy football(-ish) series The League, but he and his brother have also worked on several other projects together, including Jeff, Who Lives At Home as well as a recent appearance on Fox's The Mindy Project. Togetherness will be their first TV writing project.

A couple of interesting acquisitions have been announced. First up, Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions—known for its small budget, big profit model with the Paranormal Activity films and Insidious—has acquired a found footage movie called Peachfuzz, produced by the incredibly hard working brothers Mark and Jay Duplass. Plot details on the project are being kept under lock and key, but Mark stars in the film that centers on a young man who answers a Craigslist ad “and gets much more than he bargained for.” Production on the Patrick Brice film has already wrapped.

Hit the jump for news regarding writer/director Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring, starring Emma Watson.

Additionally, A24 announced that it has acquired Sofia Coppola’s next film, The Bling Ring. The pic is based on the true story of a group of teenagers who robbed the homes of the rich and famous between October 2008 and August 2009, coming away with over $3 million worth of loot from the likes of Paris Hilton, Orlando Bloom, and Lindsay Lohan. Emma Watson takes the lead role in the film alongside Leslie Mann, Taissa Farmiga, Israel Broussard, Katie Chang, and Claire Julien. A24 will release The Bling Ring sometime in June, but no specific date is given.

Read the press release for Peachfuzz below:
Park City, UT (January 17, 2013) – On the eve of the Sundance Film Festival, Blumhouse Productions announced that it has acquired the distribution rights to PEACHFUZZ in a preemptive bid and will serve as a partner on the film. A secret found footage horror film produced by Mark & Jay ...

I have yet to embrace fully the mumblecore genre. I want to love it, having come of age as a filmmaker working on the indies of the late ‘90s and early ‘00s, but perhaps that is my problem: I see mumblecore as the natural progression of so many films on which I crewed that never saw the light of day. Like any other genre, simply creating a movie and actually executing a good movie are two different things, and too often mumblecore-type pics feel like a means to an end rather than well-crafted films. Which does not mean the best of the bunch are not good, entertaining films, exactly how I felt about Jeff, Who Lives At Home (and I was not a fan of the Duplass brothers’ break-out picture, The Puffy Chair). Hit the jump for my review of the Blu-ray.

Jeff (Jason Segel) is a 30-year-old slacker living in his mother’s basement, obsessed with the movie Signs as he seeks such signs for direction in his own life. He does not have great relationships with either his self-important brother Pat (Ed Helms) or his disillusioned-with-life mother Sharon (Susan Sarandon). When in the midst of an errand for his mother Jeff decides to follow a young hood—having take the name on the back of the guy’s basketball jersey as a sign—he is set on a course of somewhat chance encounters beginning with running into his brother, leading to a quest to discover whether Pat’s wife Linda (Judy Greer) is cheating, ...

Two more bits of casting news this evening. Here they are in brief:

Yancy Butler, who appeared as Angie D'Amico in Kick-Ass, is set to return in the same role for the Jeff Wadlow-directed sequel.
Jonathan Daniel Brown (Project X) is set to join the cast of the horror comedy Milo, also starring Ken Marino, Gillian Jacobs and Peter Stormare.

Hit the jump for details on both projects.

First up, Heat Vision reports that Butler will return as the mother of Chris D'Amico (Christopher Mintz-Plasse), better known as Red Mist. The film is beefing up its cast ahead of the planned Toronto shoot this September. The sequel will also shoot in New York. Mintz-Plasse will also return, along with Chloe Moretz and Aaron Johnson reprising their previous roles. New additions include Donald Faison as Doctor Gravity and John Leguizamo as Red Mist's bodyguard. Be sure to read up on our recent interview with Mintz-Plasse here and check out the new poster for Kick-Ass 2 here.

Heat Vision also reports that Brown will join Milo, a picture that centers on a man who discovers he has a demon living in his intestines. Marino stars as the afflicted individual who gives the demon permission to come out during therapy and names it Milo. He attempts to take back control of his life and prevent the demon from controlling him. Brown will star as Marino's character's intern. The picture, produced by Jay and Mark Duplass, will be directed by first-timer Jacob Vaughn. Vaughn and Benjamin Hayes wrote the script.

Brothers Jay and Mark Duplass, who burst onto the scene in 2005 with their well-received indie The Puffy Chair, are now looking to put their talents to work on a remake. The Duplass brothers are in talks to write and possibly direct a redo of the 1978 rom-com Same Time, Next Year for Universal Pictures. The original starred Alan Alda and Ellen Burstyn as two people who develop an extramarital affair with each other in which they meet up once a year to rekindle the sparks. Over the years, the two catch up on each other’s lives and develop a deeper and more complex relationship. Hit the jump for more.

With features like Jeff, Who Lives At Home and Cyrus, the Brothers Duplass have proven their knack for tackling relationships in a realistic and naturally funny way, so they seem a nice fit to spearhead a new version of Same Time, Next Year. Deadline reports that the two are in talks to write the screenplay “with an eye towards directing.” The two are also working on the screenplay adaptation of the drug trafficking comedy Mule for director Todd Phillips.

Mark Duplass also has a burgeoning acting career, with a fantastic regular turn on the FX comedy series The League and roles in the upcoming indie Safety Not Guaranteed and Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty. No word on whether he might take a role in this remake, but I assume it’s too early to be talking casting.

Red Flag has released the first trailer for The Do-Deca-Pentathlon, the latest from Jay and Mark Duplass (Jeff Who Lives at Home). Mark Kelly and Steve Zissis star as two grown brothers who secretly compete in a 25-part homemade Olympics during a family reunion: "When their fierce and disruptive competition is uncovered, the brothers must choose between their passion for beating the hell out of each other and the greater good of the family." The movie looks charming in that ultra low-key way that the Duplass brothers have mastered. As someone who grew up challenging three brothers to thousands of competitions across a few dozen sports, I am the target audience.

Jennifer Lafleur, Julie Vorus, and Reid Williams also star. The Do-Deca-Pentathlon is due in theaters on July 6. Watch the trailer after the jump.

Back in February, we learned that The Hangover director Todd Phillips was developing four projects at Warner Bros. as possible directorial vehicles. One of said projects was an adaptation of Tony D’Souza’s novel Mule. The story centers on a couple who decide to traffic drugs as a result of the economic downturn and the wife’s unexpected pregnancy. The husband quickly rises up the drug trafficking ladder to become a drug boss and the two find themselves way over their heads. At the time, Phillips and producer Scott Budnick were looking for a writer to put on the project. Now it appears that Mark and Jay Duplass have been tapped to pen the adaptation. Hit the jump for more, including a synopsis for the book.

News of the Duplass brothers' involvement comes via Deadline, and frankly, this is a pretty damn exciting marriage of material and screenwriter. The Duplass brothers have proved to be enormous talents as writer/directors on dramedies like Cyrus, The Puffy Chair, and Jeff Who Lives at Home. They can nail comedy and drama in one fell swoop, and I’m eager to see a (hopefully) mature effort from Phillips. The director is currently prepping The Hangover Part III, but it’d be great to see him tackle Mule as his follow-up. Read a synopsis for the book below.
James and Kate are golden children of the late twentieth century, flush with opportunity. But an economic downturn and an unexpected pregnancy send them searching for a way to make do.

Jay and Mark Duplass don't really go dark or deep with their movies. Most of their films look at a family dynamic by introducing a strange but not outlandish hook, and then let the performances and heartwarming story carry the day. Their latest film, The Do-Deca-Pentathlon, is no different. While the movie rarely challenges the audience and slightly stumbles on a forced conflict using a stock character, The Do-Deca-Pentathlon is cute and funny and another nice addition to the Duplass' filmography.

Mark (Steve Zissis) and his estranged brother Jeremy (Mark Kelly) have become depressed with their current lifestyles. Mark loves his wife Stephanie (Jennifer Lafleur) and son (Reid Williams), and Jeremy is a successful poker player, but the joy has somehow vanished from the brothers' lives. A few days before Mark's birthday, Jeremy decides to drop in on his family and goads Mark into a new Do-Deca-Pentathlon. This doesn't sit too well with Stephanie, who wants Mark to follow his doctors' advice and keep stress to a minimum. Mark is eventually forced into a conflict between appeasing his wife and re-connecting with his brother.

The relationship between Mark and Jeremy is where Do-Deca draws its strength. Their scenes have all the comedy and genuine emotion that makes the movie worth watching. The Duplasses, Zissis, and Kelly all work together to make the competition scenes contain humor and character development, and give the movie its forward momentum. Zissis and Kelly play wonderfully off each other throughout the picture, and Zissis in particular does ...

From writers/directors Jay and Mark Duplass (Cyrus) comes Jeff Who Lives at Home, a coming of age comedy for two men who are already well beyond their youth. Starring Jason Segel (The Muppets) and Ed Helms (The Hangover) as two brothers, with Susan Sarandon (Thelma & Louise) as their mother, Jeff Who Lives at Home follows Jeff (Segel) as he searches for meaning in his life and inadvertently helps his brother, Pat (Helms) discover a truth of his own. We have three clips from the film that highlight the very funny rapport between Helms and his onscreen wife Judy Greer, a fairly awkward phone conversation between Segel and Sarandon, and the giant Segel uncomfortably riding in a tiny Porche. I was already pretty sold on the dramatic stuff from the trailers, but these clips focus on the lighter side of things and the jokes land solidly, so hopefully that carries over through the entirety of the movie. Jeff Who Lives at Home opens March 16th. Hit the jump to check out the clips.

Paramount has released a batch of new images from the upcoming dramedy Jeff, Who Lives At Home. Written and directed by Jay and Mark Duplass, the film stars Jason Segel as an adult still living with his mother who, through a series of comedic and unexpected events, crosses paths with his family in the strangest of locations and circumstances. While the logline sounds a bit vague, the trailer for the film is excellent. Segel has shown shades of his dramatic talent in Forgetting Sarah Marshall and How I Met Your Mother, but it looks as though he’ll really get a chance to shine in Jeff, Who Lives at Home. You can read Matt’s review of the film here.

Hit the jump to check out the images. The film also stars Ed Helms, Judy Greer, and Susan Sarandon. Jeff, Who Lives at Home opens on March 16th.

Here’s the synopsis for Jeff, Who Lives at Home:
On his way to the store to buy wood glue, Jeff looks for signs from the universe to determine his path. However, a series of comedic and unexpected events leads him to cross paths with his family in the strangest of locations and circumstances. Jeff just may find the meaning of his life... and if he's lucky, pick up the wood glue as well.

Paramount Vantage has released the first trailer for Jeff, Who Lives at Home, the latest from Jay and Mark Duplass (Cyrus). Jason Segel stars as the titular character searching for the meaning of life: "A series of comedic and unexpected events leads him to cross paths with his family in the strangest of locations and circumstances." As expected, the movie looks excellent. Segel has been poised for a breakout dramatic role for a while now, and he looks expertly cast in this "dramedy" from the immensely talented Duplass duo. Ed Helms seems to be in fine form as Segel's slightly more successful brother, and the two have their fair share of dramatic and comedic moments. I'm very encouraged by what this trailer shows of Segel's performance, and I can't wait to see more.
The film also stars Judy Greer and Susan Sarandon. Jeff, Who Lives at Home is scheduled for release on March 2, 2012. Watch the trailer after the jump.

Jeffrey Blitz, the director behind the 2002 Spelling Bee documentary Spellbound, is currently in negotiations to helm the comedy Table 19. The story, written by Jay and Mark Duplass, follows a group of strangers who meet at the “singles” table at a wedding. The so-called “losers” make running commentary about the ongoing wedding as Table 19 explores the ideologies of marriage from an outsider looking in.

Variety reports that although Jay and Mark Duplass were originally attached to direct, Blitz should easily be able to handle the awkward comedy that will certainly run rampant in Table 19. He also directed Rocket Science, a pic about a stuttering high school student who joins the debate team, and has directed episodes of Parks and Recreation and The Office. Shawn Levy (Real Steel) is attached to produce through his 21 Laps outfit.

The Duplass Brothers' Jeff, Who Lives at Home opens on a terrific note by bashing the silliness of M. Night Shyamalan's Signs. Unfortunately, that's about as hilarious and insightful as Jeff gets. While the lead performances are solid and there are some funny jokes along the way, the film is saddled with a weak sub-plot and an even weaker subtext. Jeff, Who Lives at Home ends up revering what it originally mocked.

In the opening scene, Jeff (Jason Segel) records a voice memo to himself where he talks about the greatness of Signs. Mark and Jay Duplass are clearly poking fun Shyamalan's contrived thriller and how everything comes together, but the brothers aren't making fun of Jeff. Jeff wants to believe everything is connected and that following "signs" will lead him out of his mother's basement and into a better life. His cynical and estranged brother Pat (Ed Helms) isn't doing much better. Pat ignores the wishes and common sense of his wife Linda (Judy Greer) and buys a Porsche. Unsurprisingly, she's less-than-pleased. Following a wrong-number call and someone asking for "Kevin", Jeff begins a journey through the city that keeps bringing him to Pat and the two begin to mend their broken relationship while Pat tries to find out if Linda is cheating on him. Meanwhile, their mother Sharon (Susan Sarandon) discovers she has a secret admirer at work.

Jeff, Who Lives at Home is where shitty, coincidental screenwriting tries to get a pass by making coincidence the point of its ...

Paramount Vantage has slated the comedy Jeff Who Lives At Home for March 2nd, 2012 (per THR). Written and directed by Jay and Mark Duplass (Cyrus), the film stars Jason Segel, Ed Helms, Judy Greer, Susan Sarandon and Rae Dawn Chong. The story centers on Jeff (Segel), a stay-at-home son who gets an epiphany about his destiny while out on an errand for his mother. Helms plays his brother. The Duplass brothers are known for making thought provoking and slightly left-of-center films, and Jeff Who Lives At Home seems to be no exception. The comedy will have its world premiere this fall at the Toronto Film Festival. You can check out the first images from the film here.

Mark and Jay Dupplass are looking to continue their path towards more mainstream fare after last year’s dramedy Cyrus, starring Jonah Hill, opened to wildly positive reception. The writer/director duo will unveil their next film, the stoner comedy Jeff Who Lives at Home starring Jason Segel and Ed Helms, and produced by Jason Reitman, later this year, and now the pair are shopping the script for their next project, a dramatic thriller. 24 Frames reports that the new film, titled Pitchfork, centers on “the middle-aged mother of an indie rocker who, after her son is killed in a car accident, seeks vengeance on an online blogger who had peddled snark about her son [on the music site Pitchfork].” Things take a turn, however, when the bully turns out to be a teenager (which doesn't necessarily count as a surprise).

Apparently Susan Sarandon is being sought to take on what is most certainly a very meaty role as the mother, and Hill has talked with the brothers Duplass about possibly playing the blogger. The pair broke onto the scene with 2005’s indie The Puffy Chair, and their subsequent films have been deemed part of the “mumblecore” aesthetic (low-budgets, improvised dialogue, etc.). Jeff Who Lives at Home currently doesn't have a release date, but is expected to hit theaters later this year.

Currently playing in limited release is Cyrus. Written and directed by Jay Duplass & Mark Duplass (The Puffy Chair, Baghead), the movie centers on John (John C. Reilly), a film editor who’s down on his luck and still emotionally attached to his soon-to-be remarried ex-wife, Jamie (Catherine Keener). John’s prospects take a turn when he meets Molly (Marisa Tomei) at a party. However, when her 21 year-old son/housemate Cyrus (Jonah Hill) enters the picture, he becomes an unexpected saboteur of John’s attempts at Molly’s heart.

While you might think making a studio movie with Fox Searchlight might change who The Duplass Brothers are, they stayed indie by filming the movie in order and using a ton of improv. What they ended up with was a touching, original story that blends humor & heartbreak. Definitely recommended.

Anyway, I recently got to speak with the brothers and we talked about filming in order, the improv, using the RED camera, what might be on the DVD/Blu-ray, their next film Jeff Who Lives At Home, and a lot more. Hit the jump to check it out:

I ask about all the projects listed on their IMDb page as it seemed like they'd made a few more movies since Cyrus
	Filming the movie in order
Did anything change so they could shoot the movie in order
What can fans look forward to on the DVD/Blu-ray
How are they with directing improv. Do they ever gives lines
Why did they choose the RED camera

Yesterday I posted my video interview with John C. Reilly, and tonight I've got Marisa Tomei. Jay and Mark Duplass’ steady professional climb just hit another peak. Their first two features, The Puffy Chair and Baghead, won enough critical praise and independent film fans to get a green light for their first studio feature, Cyrus. The aforementioned peak comes this weekend as the film kicks off its national rollout in New York. It is a fitting sign of their upward mobility then, that Cyrus’ executive producers are a pair of blockbuster sibling filmmakers; Ridley and Tony Scott (Gladiator and Top Gun, respectively).

The Duplasses tracked their career path for Collider during a busy breakfast-time interview at New York’s Gramercy Park Hotel. Hit the jump for the full audio and transcript, including their transition to life with a film studio, the guilty pleasure of having a Google alert for yourself and why Jonah Hill was like their mascot, onset.

The Duplass Brothers can trace some of their success back to another director’s milestone in July of 1990. That month, Richard Linklater’s Slacker began a self-financed run at the Dobie Theater in his adopted hometown of Austin, Texas. Buzz built over three months before a national run the following year. As a long list of independent filmmakers had done before him (Roger Corman, Melvin Van Peebles, Robert Downey Sr, John Cassavetes, John Waters, Jim Jarmusch and Spike Lee, to name a few), Linklater found his voice and, in turn, gave hope to a generation of aspiring directors that they could do the same. Jay and Mark Duplass were among those ...

Dramedies about love triangles are somewhat commonplace. Dramedies about an unconventional love triangle with stalker-like behavior attached to one of the three characters is much more rare. That smaller sub-genre becomes almost non-existent when the perpetrator is also the son of one of the other two involved. Cyrus, which begins a national rollout today in New York and Los Angeles, pulls it off, due in large part to its stars: John C. Reilly, Marisa Tomei and Jonah Hill. The latest film from writers/co-directors Jay and Mark Duplass (The Puffy Chair and Baghead) follows John (Reilly), a man in dire straits whose life turns around when he meets his dream woman Molly (Tomei) at a party. Her son Cyrus (Jonah Hill) stains the picture with a severe failure to launch syndrome, compounded by Oedipal overtones.

Reilly and Tomei recently did a press day in New York and we got to attend. Hit the jump for the full audio of each roundtable interview, along with highlights, including: Reilly on whether masturbation got him to say yes to Cyrus, both on what it was like to improvise their way through a film, Reilly on Paul Thomas Anderson and whether he’ll be in PTA’s new film and why Tomei thinks Jonah Hill makes his real-life mother proud.
