The sequel to The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones was set to start filming in the next few months, but now Constantin Films has put the brakes on the project. The studio announced today (via The Wrap) that production on The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes has been “delayed,” but The Wrap notes that the future of the project is in question. This isn’t exactly a major surprise, as City of Bones debuted to only $9.3 million in its opening weekend and its worldwide total currently stands at $37 million against a budget of $60 million.
Harald Zwart was onboard to return as director for the YA sequel City of Ashes as was the entire cast, but frankly I would have been surprised if Constantin Films moved forward with the follow-up in the wake of the first film’s box office disappointment. Though City of Ashes has yet to be officially canceled, I wouldn’t exactly hold my breath for it to get back on track anytime soon.
Screen Gems has released a bounty of new high-resolution images from director Harald Zwart’s YA adaptation The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones. Based on the book by Cassandra Clare, the upcoming film tells the story of Clary Fray (Lily Collins), a seemingly ordinary teenager who discovers that she is the descendant of a line of Shadowhunters, a secret organization of young half-angel warriors in an ancient battle to protect our world from demons. These new images give a nice overview of what to expect from the pic, which is now only days away from release.

One of the more anticipated Young Adult adaptations coming up is director Harald Zwart’s take on The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, and Screen Gems has provided us with an exclusive first look at Jemima West as the character Isabelle in the film. The story follows Clary Fray (Lily Collins), a teenage girl who discovers that she’s descended from a sect of half-angel warriors who protect the world from demons. The trailer promises some rather intense fighting sequences as well as plenty of supernatural sorcery, so hopefully fans are happy with the book-to-screen adaptation.
