First Trailer for EMANUEL AND THE TRUTH ABOUT FISHES Starring Kaya Scodelario and Jessica Biel

The first trailer for Sundance entry Emanuel and the Truth about Fishes is now online.  Kaya Scodelario (Wuthering Heights) plays the titular character, a troubled girl who obsesses over a new neighbor (Jessica Biel) that looks just like her dead mother: “In offering to babysit her newborn, Emanuel unwittingly enters a fragile, fictional world, of which she becomes the gatekeeper.”  The tone chills, I am intrigued by the hints of the  “fragile, fictional world,” and I like hearing Scodelario try on her American accent.  But whenever Emanuel is released, I will go see it to find out how a young girl gets such an unusual name beyond the thematic resonance of “God is with us.”

Alfred Molina, Frances O’Connor, Jimmi Simpson, and Aneurin Barnard co-star in Francesca Gregorini‘s second feature.  Watch the trailer after the jump.

The first clips have landed online for two Sundance 2013 premieres: Chan-wook Park’s Stoker, starring Nicole Kidman and Mia Wasikowska, and Francesca Gregorini’s Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes, starring Jessica Biel, Kaya Scodelario and Alfred Molina.  Both movies deal with issues of motherhood, though the first clip from Stoker reveals Kidman’s character as rather aggressively unstable while Biel’s character is merely a dead-ringer for the protag’s own dead mother.  Check out both clips after the jump (be forewarned: both clips are annoyingly set to auto-play).

2013 Razzie Nominations Announced; TWILIGHT: BREAKING DAWN – PART 2 Gets Nominated in Every Category

As we await the 85th Academy Award nominations announcement on Thursday morning, we now have a look at the opposite end of the 2012 film spectrum.  The 33rd Golden Raspberry Award nominations have been announced, celebrating the very worst of what 2012′s movie slate had to offer.  Leading the pack is The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 with 10 nominations, as the film landed a nomination in every single category.  The Twilight closer will go head-to-head with Battleship, A Thousand Words, That’s My Boy, and The Oogieloves in Big Balloon Adventure for the Worst Picture title.

It’s easy to beat up on the Twilight franchise, and even though I wouldn’t go so far as to call Breaking Dawn – Part 2 a good movie, it’s in no way the worst movie of the year.  The sheer amount of beheadings alone in director Bill Condon’s climactic fight sequence is enough to make the movie worth watching.  Anyway, hit the jump to check out the full list of Razzie Awards nominations.

TOTAL RECALL Blu-ray Review

Though by no means is it a good movie, Total Recall, the 2012 remake of the Arnold Schwarzenegger/Paul Verhoven action classic, is also not the disaster that some might have expected or hoped for.  For the most part it’s a slightly stupid action movie with a number of big set pieces, but nothing all that memorable about it.  Colin Farrell stars alongside Jessica Biel and Kate Beckinsale in Len Wiseman’s update, and our review of the film on Blu-ray follows after the jump.

Misleading International Trailer for HITCHCOCK Starring Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren

A new international trailer for Hitchcock has gone online.  While this trailer centers on the drama revolving around the making of Hitchcock’s Psycho, that’s not really the thrust of the movie.  It’s more of a backdrop to the film’s central (and less interesting) conflict between Hitchcock (Anthony Hopkins) and wife/partner Alma Reville (Helen Mirren).  This trailer shows only a hint of the marital tension between the two characters, which serves as the basis for most of the movie.  Going into Hitchcock thinking you’re about to see a riveting tale about the making of Psycho is a recipe for disappointment.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film also stars Scarlett Johansson, Danny Huston, Toni Collette, Jessica Biel, Michael Stuhlbarg, James D’Arcy, Michael Wincott, Richard Portnow, and Kurtwood SmithHitchcock opens in limited release on November 23rd.

Fox Searchlight has released 8 new images from the upcoming drama Hitchcock.  Directed by Sacha Gervasi, the film stars Anthony Hopkins as legendary director Alfred Hitchcock and chronicles the development and production of Psycho, specifically focusing on Hitchcock’s strained relationship with his wife and collaborator Alma Reville (Helen Mirren).  These new images give us fresh looks at the prolific couple as well as the Psycho cast: Scarlett Johansson as Janet Leigh, Jessica Biel as Vera Miles, and James D’Arcy as Anthony Perkins.  The film received a mixed-to-positive reception following its world premiere at AFI Fest, though Mirren’s performance as Reville has drawn near universal praise.

The first trailer and a new poster for director Sacha Gervasi’s Hitchcock have been released.  The film looks absolutely fascinating, with killer performances from stars Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren as the legendary director and his wife.  The story chronicles the troubled production of Psycho, but there’s a great deal of humor sprinkled throughout this trailer to balance the more dramatic material.  The chemistry between Hopkins and Mirren is palpable, and the makeup work on Hopkins is simply stunning.  Though the fall movie season is already packed with some fantastically promising films, this swell first trailer has rocketed Hitchcock towards the top of my most anticipated list.

Producers Douglas Wick and Lucy Fisher Tell the Crazy Story Behind the Production and Shelving of David O. Russell’s NAILED

Many projects go through growing pains during development.  James Cameron’s Titanic was labeled the biggest bomb of all time before it even hit theaters, Martin Sheen had a heart attack during the year-long shoot of Apocalypse Now, and filming on Men in Black 3 halted for a few months so that they could work on the script.  David O. Russell’s Nailed, however, was a bona fide production nightmare.  The film has yet to be finished and it’s unlikely it’ll ever see the light of day, but none of this is the fault of the creatives involved.

The political comedy satire was filmed in 2008 with Jessica Biel, Jake Gyllenhaal, Catherine Keener, and Tracy Morgan and centered on three people with serious health issues that stormed Washington D.C. to demand treatment. Production was shut down multiple times during filming, and just as Russell was getting to the filming of the film’s centerpiece scene the project was shut down for good.  The story behind Nailed’s filming and subsequent permanent limbo is stranger than fiction, and Steve recently got a lot of background on what exactly went down from producers Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher (of Red Wagon Entertainment) when he spoke with them in anticipation of the release of Lawless.  Hit the jump for the full story.

While the summer has been awash with big action films, a heaping help of sci-fi and a trio of superhero movies, The Tall Man is coming to lead us into the fall.  Director Pascal Laugier’s horror thriller centers on Julia Denning (Jessica Biel), the nurse of a small town which has been plagued by the recent disappearances of their children.   Julia doesn’t put much stock in the culprit being the local urban legend of The Tall Man until her own son is taken.   And though you’ve seen the trailer, posters and clips from the film, now The Tall Man is coming for you in this new motion poster.  Also starring Jodelle Ferland, Stephen McHattie, William B. Davis and Jakob Davies, The Tall Man opens August 31st.  Hit the jump to check out the motion poster.

First Trailer for PLAYING FOR KEEPS Starring Gerard Butler, Jessica Biel, and Catherine Zeta-Jones [Updated with Images and Poster]

The first trailer for Gabriele Muccino‘s (The Pursuit of Happyness) comedy-drama Playing for Keeps (formerly titled Playing the Field) has been released.  Gerard Butler stars as a former soccer star who decides to coach his son’s little league soccer team, but ends up becoming the object of attraction for the local town’s women.  The schmaltzy trailer is kind of all over the place, as Butler is seen alternatively cracking jokes and being depressed.  The supporting cast is fine, with Jessica Biel playing Butler’s ex-wife and Catherine Zeta-Jones playing a love interest who could also revitalize Butler’s career, but the story seems to be covering the well-worn territory of a single dad who pines for the greatness of his earlier life at the expense of his relationship with his son/family.  That said, the film might prove fairly enticing to families looking for a light, heartwarming story during the holidays that doesn’t involve short hairy half-lings or a singing Hugh Jackman.
