THE RIOT CLUB Review | TIFF 2014

the-riot-club-review

It’s nice to think that we live in a pretty fair world.  Sure humanity is sprawling and varied, but our differences are mostly overcome by a sense of harmony or karma.  It’s nice to think that, but it’s not necessarily true.  Life isn’t fair.  We aren’t all born with equal opportunity.  You can’t be “whatever you want to be” when you grow up.  The fact of the matter is our destiny comes with restrictions based on the circumstances into which we are born.  Location, time period, genetics—these are all factors that determine the ill-defined (but definitely real) limit to our reach, and like it or not, few are more significant than wealth and status.  Director Lone Scherfig’s (An Education) new film, The Riot Club, tackles class and social structure head-on from the eye of the young elite, following the members of a small and extremely exclusive club at the illustrious Oxford University.  The film pulls no punches as it examines class structure from this “soon-to-be ruling class” point of view, and while it verges on going a bit over-the-top, it’s ultimately a winning and infuriatingly familiar story told with vigor, bombast, and debauchery galore.

WINTER’S TALE Blu-ray Review

winters-tale-blu-ray-review

Quentin Tarantino has complained about how one of the biggest problems with American cinema is that it’s afraid of big emotions.  Of melodrama that might descend into camp (or perhaps is camp to begin with).  And it’s true, more movies are likely to adapt an ironic distance than go for something earnest.  There’s a reason for that: when earnest doesn’t work, you get films like The Postman and The Room.  But that means some material just isn’t going to translate into American cinema, and that’s why Winter’s Tale is a boring disaster.  Colin Farrell, Russell Crowe and Will Smith star in this story of star-crossed lovers and miracles, and my Winter’s Tale Blu-ray review follows after the jump.

Life isn’t a fairy tale.  Life requires life beyond loss and according to writer-director-producer Akiva Goldsman, that’s why we need fairy tales for adults like his new movie, Winter’s Tale.  The book-to-film adaptation stars Colin Farrell as a thief named Peter Lake.  Peter’s perfectly fine stealing to get by, but after crossing paths with Jessica Brown Findlay’s Beverly Penn, he abandons everything he’s known for something he’s experiencing for the very first time – true love.

Just ahead of the film’s Valentine’s Day debut, Goldsman, Farrell and Brown Findlay as well as co-stars Jennifer Connelly who portrays Virginia, a mother with an ailing daughter whose fate becomes intertwined with Peter Lake’s, and Eva Marie Saint who steps in as the older version of Beverly’s younger sister, all sat down for a press conference in New York City.  Check out what the gang had to say about the challenge of enticing an audience to suspend disbelief, their personal experiences with miracles, the ups and downs of shooting the film’s most intimate scene and more. Recently seen battling the unded in Resident Evil: Retribution, Boris Kodjoe will next battle sex-addiction in the Lionsgate drama, Addicted.  Paul Hall will produce with Bille Woodruff (Honey) attached to direct.  The picture centers on a supposedly happily-married mother of three children who satisfies her sex addiction by sleeping around.  Sex addiction tales seem to be a trend on the rise (Shame, Thank You For Sharing), all paving the way to the inevitable Fifty Shades of Grey. Variety’s report shares no details as to Kodjoe’s role, so it’s unclear as to which side of the addiction he will be on.  Kodjoe can next be seen in another film that deals with infidelity in brutal ways in director Douglas Aarniokoski’s Nurse 3-D.
