ARCHER Renewed for Seasons Six and Seven

FX has renewed the fantastic animated comedy series Archer for a sixth season—and a seventh.  The network has given a two-season renewal to the show, per THR, ensuring a rich syndication deal and leaving open the possibility for even more seasons past the seventh.  The series is a consistent ratings hit in the all-important 18-49 demo, ranking as the second-highest rated basic cable comedy series on TV.  By picking up two more 13-episode seasons of Archer, the show’s number of total episodes will put it past the threshold needed to qualify for syndication, meaning previous episodes of the series will now be able to air on cable and broadcast syndication.

Created by Adam Reed and Matth Thompson, the series took a huge gamble in its current fifth season by basically blowing up the central premise of the show and starting over from scratch.  The result—subtitled Archer: Vice—is a hilariously ridiculous new conceit buoyed by the sharp writing and excellent voice cast, which is led by Bob’s Burgers voice actor H. Jon Benjamin as the titular character.  The season five finale will air on FX April 21st, and one imagines season six will return January of next year.

ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT: Season 4 Review

Was it six years of anticipation for a fourth season of Arrested Development or was it desire?  If it was the former, we saw possibilities beyond the show’s ending.  If it was the latter, we simply didn’t want the show to end, and we would accept it any form.  “Maybe a movie,” Ron Howard suggests at the close of the third season when Maeby (Alia Shawkat) pitches her family’s story as a TV series.  Now the show has returned for a fourth season that is radically different from anything we’ve seen on television (perhaps the closest cousin being the time-travel season on Lost).  What begins as a brilliant new approach to storytelling on television becomes a season that demands a chart to follow the crisscrossing plotlines that begin to get in the way of enjoying the show’s humor.  Thankfully, despite the heavy weight of the show’s ambition, Arrested Development is as funny and clever as past seasons.  But this time, it may be too clever for its own good.

4 Clips from ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT: Season 4

Four clips have been released for the fourth season of Arrested Development.  Earlier this week, I posted six questions about the upcoming season, and these clips provide some answers.  First, the language will still be bleeped, which is a nice touch (although we don’t know if it will be bleeped throughout the season; it’s just bleeped in this instance).  Also, there’s a throwback to the confusion regarding bees and beads.

Hit the jump to check out the clips.  Arrested Development: Season 4 premieres on May 26th.

After seven years and a small case of cancellation, Arrested Development will return in two weeks.  Netflix has released the first trailer for Season 4, and the show looks as hilarious as ever.  As excited as all AD fans are, there was always the fear of “What if the show can’t meet expectations?”  I always felt that Season 3 went out on a high note, and that a fourth season could jeopardize the strong finish.  But judging by this trailer, Arrested Development fans have nothing to fear.  The weirdness, sight gags, wordplay, and more are back.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The show stars Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, Michael Cera, David Cross, Portia de Rossi, Tony Hale, Alia Shawkat, Jeffrey Tambor, and Jessica Walter.  All 15 episodes premiere on Netflix at midnight on May 26th.

Much to the surprise and joy of every Arrested Development fan, the Emmy Award-winning comedy series following the wildly eccentric and entertainingly dysfunctional Bluth family is back with 15 new episodes debuting on Netflix on May 26th.  After having seen the first episode, I can say that the show is as twisted and funny as ever, and feels like it hasn’t missed a beat in the seven years since the last episode aired.  From creator/writer Mitch Hurwitz, the series stars Will Arnett, Jason Bateman, Michael Cera, David Cross, Portia de Rossi, Tony Hale, Alia Shawkat, Jeffrey Tambor and Jessica Walter.

During a recent press conference to promote the 15 new episodes, co-stars Jason Bateman, Michael Cera, David Cross, Portia de Rossi, Alia Shawkat and Jessica Walter talked about how great it’s been to reunite with each other, the possibility of a movie still being made, what it was like to return to these roles after so many years, how often fans throw quotes at them when they’re out, how complicated the episodes were to shoot, and just how many scenes the Bluth family is in together.  Check out what they had to say after the jump, and be aware that there are some spoilers.

The first clip from the new batch of Arrested Development episodes has landed online, and it appears that the relationship between Tony Hale’s Buster and Jessica Walter’s Lucille hasn’t changed a bit.  The clip provides a tiny hint as to what Lucille has been up to since the events of the season three finale, but mainly it just showcases the series’ wonderful sense of humor that’s been sorely missing from our lives for far too long.  Additionally, Netflix has released a new batch of character posters for the new episodes that features the entire cast along with some rather familiar taglines.

Hit the jump to check out the clip and posters, and if you missed the EW covers and new images from yesterday, click here.  Netflix will release all 15 new episodes of Arrested Development at once on May 26th.

One of the best comedies currently on television has just been renewed.  FX announced today that the hilarious animated series Archer has been picked up for a 13-episode fifth season.  Season four is currently in the midst of airing on the network, and ratings have continued to climb.  Compared to season two, this season has posted ratings gains of +44% in the adults 18-34 demo and +36% in the adults 18-49 demo.  Moreover, the show continues to shine creatively as the exploits of the titular character (voiced H. We received a fantastic entry into the spy genre in 2012 with the release of the James Bond film Skyfall, but damn it’s going to be good to have Archer back in our lives this month.  The fantastic FX spy comedy series returns for its fourth season later next week, and a new poster has been released online (bearing the headline “Quantum of Mediocrity”) along with a few amusing character interviews.  Said interviews play out like the characters sat down with journalists at a junket, but in true Archer fashion they don’t exactly play out as expected.

Hit the jump to check out the new poster and interviews, and click here to read our recap of the recent Archer Live event and Q&A.  Archer returns for season four on Thursday, January 17th on FX.

ARCHER LIVE! Event Features a Cast Q&A, Revisits Season Three, Previews Season Four and Reveals Archer’s Preference for German Porn (Sploosh)

Believe it or not, the only time the voice cast of FX’s animated spy series Archer gets together is during events like Comic-Con or the TCA press tour.  So it’s a special treat for them to participate in Archer Live!, an in-person event that not only lets the cast members get out of the recording booth and riff on each other in person, but lets them interact with their rabid fanbase in a variety of ways.  Outstanding vocal talent H. Jon Benjamin, Aisha Tyler, Chris Parnell, Amber Nash and Lucky Yates were on hand along with executive producer Matt Thompson to hold a fan Q&A, reenact some favorite scenes, preview episodes of the upcoming fourth season and take us all into the danger zone.

Season three of Archer will be available on DVD and Blu-ray starting January 8th.  The season four premiere of Archer debuts on FX at 10PM ET/PT on Thursday, January 17th.  Hit the jump for a recap of Archer Live! and a preview of season four.

ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT Pauses Production as Netflix Orders More Episodes

by     Posted 1 year, 314 days ago

I fully appreciate the irony of this sentence, but the fourth season of Arrested Development has paused production on the revived series’ new episodes. Though Netflix had originally ordered a ten-episode run for the comedy, creator Mitch Hurwitz ended up shooting additional footage and dreaming up enough material for more scenes and storylines. Deadline reports that Netflix agreed to expand the order to somewhere between 12 and 15 total episodes. Production has paused to allow Hurwitz to review the footage that’s already been shot and work the new arcs into the season. It will also take some time to wrangle the actors for the additional shoots, so plans are for production to start up again in late January. This should still allow time for the show’s debut in April, when Netflix plans to make all of the episodes available at once.

Production is currently underway on a new batch of episodes of the brilliant comedy series Arrested Development, and while they won’t debut on Netflix until 2013, an official image of the reunited cast has landed online to assure fans that this is really, truly happening.  Entertainment Weekly gathered the actors together as part of their upcoming “Reunions” issue, and images of the whole cast decked out in some super fancy attire will have you yearning for those new episodes now more than ever.

Hit the jump to check out the images of Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, Portia de Rossi, Jeffrey Tambor, Alia Shawkat, Michael Cera, Jessica Walter, Tony Hale, and David Cross all back together again.  The new episodes of Arrested Development will debut on Netflix sometime in Spring 2013.

Henry Winkler Returning to ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT. He’s Very Good.

It looks like the Bluth family is still going to need a lawyer, as Henry Winkler is set to return to Arrested Development in the revived series which will appear on Netflix.  The movie rental company went a long way to restore good will with the public when they picked up the cult favorite for what will be the fourth season with at least ten new episodes.  Perhaps they had some legal counsel from Barry Zuckerkorn (Winkler) on how best to handle their previous faux pas.  No word yet on if Bob Loblaw (Scott Baio) will lob any law bombs.  Hit the jump for a quote from Winkler on rejoining Arrested Development.

Ron Howard Confirms New Characters for Season Four of ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT on Netflix [Update: MAD MEN's John Slattery Joins the Show in a Mystery Role]

Now that we know the Netflix-backed Arrested Development project is not just a trick (illusion, illusion!) but actually confirmed, there are finally a few answers to the question of what we can expect from it.  According to Ron Howard, who acts as the show’s narrator, the new season will include some new characters.

There’s been plenty of hype building up thanks to the show’s stars keeping fans on the hook with photos from the set, including Tobias (David Cross) in a sheet and George Michael (Michael Cera) on a segway.  And despite what Howard called a “hell of a hiatus,” he has also reassured fans that the show’s quality is still top-notch (as if those photos suggested anything otherwise). For more on what Howard said of the upcoming season, hit the jump.
