Mondo, the Alamo Drafthouse’s art boutique, has become a behemoth, and they’re showing no signs of slowing down.  This fall will mark the inaugural MondoCon event, “which will coincide with the first weekend of Fantastic Fest on September 20 & 21 at The Marchesa Hall & Theater in Austin, TX.”  The convention “will bring together unique guests from a variety of areas to celebrate film, music, art, and toys with the world’s finest artists, designers, illustrators, painters, toy creators as well as directors, composers and more. The convention will offer new artwork and products as well as panels and special screenings.”  In other words, not only will you see a bunch of cool stuff, you’ll probably go broke trying to buy as much of it as you can.  Tickets for MondoCon go on sale on June 4th at Mondo-Con.com.  Single day tickets will are $35 and full weekend tickets are $70.  Additionally, Fantastic Fest VIP badges will get a full weekend ticket to MondoCon.

Mondo has announced the first round of guests for the convention, and in addition to including some of the usual suspects like Jock, Phantom City Creative, and Jay Shaw, the lineup will also include Hellboy creator Mike Mignola.  Mignola also created a The Bride of Frankenstein poster, which will go on sale at a random time on June 5th (follow @MondoNews for the announcement).  Hit the jump to check out the poster and the press release for MondoCon.

Limited Paper: Mondo’s Second-Annual Oscar Night Poster Drop Featured 14 New Posters Including Tyler Stout’s DJANGO UNCHAINED & Durieux’s THE MASTER

OscarSlice

Last year, Mondo put together a fun little event for the 2012 Academy Awards:  a few days prior to that Oscar Sunday, Mondo announced that a series of brand-new posters (all of which were based on that year’s Oscar-nominated films) would be dropping throughout the Academy’s broadcast.  Everyone dug the idea, the whole thing went off without a hitch, and—most importantly—waiting on a drop gave all of us something to focus on whenever watching the Oscars became too much to bear.

And so, when the Mondo guys announced they’d be doing it all over again in 2013, we were pumped (as were many of you).  But once that excitement died down, we were left wondering which of 2012’s Oscar-nominated films would get the Mondo treatment…and which of the rumors we’d been hearing would turn out to be true.  Answers to those questions (and many more) await you after the jump, folks.

Limited Paper Video: Walking Tour of Mondo’s IN PROGRESS Gallery Show [Updated With Pics]

Before Mondo opened up the doors on In Progress (its first Mondo Gallery show of 2013), no one wondered about which movies would be covered by the show’s artists:  every piece of In Progress was based on previously-released Mondo works, so there’d be no surprises (or so we thought).  And no one was wondering about the quality of the artists themselves, because any lineup that includes Martin Ansin, Ken Taylor, Laurent Durieux, Jock, Jay Ryan, and Aaron Horkey is a lineup worth paying attention to.

Indeed, In Progress sounded awesome.  But there was one lingering question that seemed to be on everyone’s mind:  how much were these pieces going to cost?  Find out the answer to that question—and any other lingering questions you might have—after the jump.

Update: We’ve added some pictures from the show after the videos.

For now, all is quiet in Poster World (“…not a gallery was stirring…”), but the year ain’t over yet, folks!  Is a mind-blower of a poster drop lurking somewhere between now and January 1st?  If so, will it be the poster we’re all hoping it’ll be, or something else entirely (our money’s still on a Martin Ansin Parental Guidance)?   Eh, who knows?  Speculation like this only drives everyone crazy, and after we all just spent a week being driven nuts by our families, who needs that?  Instead, let’s focus on wrapping up our Top 20 Greatest Posters of 2012 list.

Confused?  Everyone who missed Part One can get caught up on the back half of our list here.  Once you’ve done that, check out our next round of picks (some of which might surprise you) by clicking the link below.  Who made the cut?  And who’s probably gonna end up being named Poster MVP, 2012?  Meet me after the jump to find out more, Princess.

60-Second TV Spot for DREDD 3D; New Featurette Looks at “Slo-Mo”

by     Posted 2 years, 92 days ago

dredd-image-slice

Lionsgate has released a new 60-second TV spot for Dredd 3D, a new adaptation of the Judge Dredd comics.  The TV-spot basically plays like an abbreviated trailer, and since it’s not red-band, it can’t show one of the film’s distinctive features, which is the hard-R gore.  There are some brutal kills in Dredd, and I suppose it’s a good thing that they haven’t been spoiled.  The studio has also released a new featurette high-lighting the drug “Slo-Mo” which is taking over Mega City One.  The drug makes the user feel like everything is moving at 1% its normal speed, and it’s neat to see the visuals play at 4000-frames per second.  I’m particularly grateful that director Pete Travis didn’t overuse the effect.

Hit the jump to check out the TV spot and the featurette.  The film will play at the Toronto International Film Festival and Fantastic Fest before opening nationwide on September 21st.  You can click here to read my review.

Exciting news, folks:  Jock—the kickass DC Comics artist who created two of the best Batman-themed pieces of art we saw at Comic-Con this year—is releasing the AP editions of his The Dark Knight Rises Mondo poster.  That’s good news, but here’s the even-better news:  he’s also releasing an AP edition of the incredibly-hard-to-find “Villain Variant” of the poster…and for those that buy, there’s a chance that your poster may come with an extremely kick-ass bonus.  Wanna know more?  Meet me after the jump, folks.

Limited Paper: Jock and Mondo Unveil Poster for the Year’s Best Action Film, THE RAID

by     Posted 2 years, 102 days ago

the raid poster

About a year or so ago, film festival-goers started ranting and raving about the mindblowing badassery of Gareth EvansThe Raid, a film that is to the action genre what Chuck Norris is to humanity.  Earlier this year, The Raid finally broke free of the festival circuit and toured a number of smaller, art-house theaters to similar critical acclaim, and today—now that the film’s finally available on DVD and Blu-ray—it’s expected that the buzz surrounding the flick will finally evolve into what The Raid’s been destined for all along:  cult-classic status.

To commemorate this awesome bit of news, the good folks at Mondo teamed up with Jock to produce an appropriately blunt, perfectly imposing screenprint for Evans’ film.  Wanna see it, and find out where you can get your own Thursday?  Find out after the jump, folks.

Limited Paper Interview: Mondo Artist Jock Talks 70’s Horror, Shares Exclusive DARK KNIGHT RISES Poster Sketches and More

Just before Chris Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises arrived in theaters, Mondo made big waves at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, selling out of virtually every poster it dropped and easily ranking amongst the most-visited booths on the SDCC’s exhibitor’s floor.  With Batman-fever at an all-time high, it came as no surprise when Mondo’s Dark Knight Rises prints immediately became the company’s most sought-after posters from the Con.

Recently, Limited Paper had the chance to chat with Jock, the Mondo (and DC Comics) artist behind a few of those Dark Knight prints.  Wanna know what he has to say about working with Mondo, the ever-increasing popularity of poster-collecting, and which print he’d make right now if given the license to do so?  It’s all after the jump, folks.

We’re only 24 hours or so into the 2012 SDCC, and already Mondo – the movie-poster producing arm of Tim League’s ever-expanding Alamo Drafthouse brand—has caused quite the stir:  last night’s archive sale put a slew of Avengers posters into the hands of eager fans who’d been unable to catch them during their drop dates, and today the company unveiled three new posters—for The Dark Knight Rises, Princess Mononoke, and HBO’s Game of Thrones–  that resulted in the kind of sprawling lines usually associated with theme park rides.  Want to see Mondo’s latest, and hear about what it was like on the frontlines?  Meet me after the jump, folks.

I’m currently sitting in my hotel room posting stories (someone has to bring the news to you fine people), but Steve tweeted that it was “beyond insane” down at the Mondo booth (#437) on the Comic-Con exhibitor’s floor.  Don’t expect the insanity to let up tomorrow, because Mondo will be releasing a poster for The Dark Knight Rises by Jock.  I would love to see the level of detail on this thing close-up, and the poster is a nice callback (either intentionally or unintentionally) to the bat-centric Batman Begins in that Batman actually used bats as a weapon.

Hit the jump to check out the poster.  It measures 24″ x 36″, is limited to an edition of 375, and costs $50.  The poster will go on sale tomorrow, July 12th at a random time, so be sure you’re following @MondoNews for the announcement.  The Dark Knight Rises opens July 20th.
