Last week, we reported that Sony Pictures had picked up the rights to the Angry Birds movie, and set it for July 1, 2016. Production is now speeding ahead as Jon Vitti has been announced to write the script. Vitti’s impressive resume include writing stints on Saturday Night Live, The Critic, The Larry Sanders Show, King of the Hill, and The Simpsons. It also includes Alvin and the Chimpmunks and Alvin and the Chipmunks, but for the sake of being interested in the Angry Birds movie, we’ll ignore those and focus on the positive.
The press release also notes that there’s already an Angry Birds Toons series, which is news to me since I don’t really play Angry Birds much less follow their animated adventures. It’s unknown if Vitti will follow in the tone of those cartoons or if it will be more in line with his rich TV resume. Hit the jump for the press release.
The Angry Birds movie is moving full-speed ahead, as Sony Pictures Entertainment announced today that it has acquired worldwide distribution rights to the feature film adaptation of the popular video game. Rovio Entertainment is developing, producing, and financing the pic itself, with John Cohen (Despicable Me) and David Maisel (Iron Man) onboard to produce the 3D animated film. We previously knew that Rovio was targeting a 2016 release date, and Sony has firmed that up by announcing Angry Birds will hit theaters on July 1, 2016.
A director or screenwriter has yet to be announced and story details are non-existent, but this is an incredibly lucrative property that is bound to do big business with the younger crowd when it hits theaters on the Fourth of July weekend in 2016. Production is slated to begin in the next few months, at which point we should learn more about the animated comedy. Hit the jump to read the press release.
It was only a matter of time before the mobile gaming juggernaut that is Angry Birds came to a screen that was bigger than your hand. On the third anniversary of the game’s release, Rovio Entertainment has announced that John Cohen (Despicable Me) will produce a 3D CG-animated feature film due out summer 2016. David Masiel (Iron Man) will executive produce. Rovio Entertainment will produce and finance the movie, and will likely use the $1000 bills that were previously allocated to fill one of the company’s swimming pools.
Hit the jump for the press release. In October, Angry Birds‘ teamed with Star Wars for Angry Birds Star Wars and hit the top of the U.S. iPhone charts in 2.5 hours.
