Warner Bros.’ untitled Acme movie is taking shape.  Heat Vision reports that X-Men: First Class scribes Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz have been tapped to write the script for the project, while Crazy Stupid Love writers/directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa are in early talks to direct.  The film is planned as a CG/live-action hybrid and while story details are under wraps, producer Dan Lin previously told us that the lead character is a Steve Jobs-type and the story revolves around the titular company that makes everything.  Steve Carell is attached to star in what is being envisioned as a big family adventure movie.

Ficarra and Requa just helmed the upcoming con artist pic Focus, starring Will Smith and Margo Robbie, but it’s unclear if Acme would be their next directorial effort.  Miller and Stentz, meanwhile, are currently busy writing the upcoming Power Rangers reboot.

CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE Directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa to Helm TALIBAN SHUFFLE Starring Tina Fey

Crazy, Stupid, Love directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa are currently at work on the con-man movie Focus starring Will Smith, but they’re already lining up a future project with an adaptation of the memoir Taliban Shuffle.  Per THR, Kim Barker‘s wartime memoir covers her time “as a fish out of water in Kabul, filing stories about militants, being a woman in wartime Iraq and Pakistan, dealing with boredom interspersed with dashes of violence and the promiscuous war-correspondent culture.”  Reading this brief description, my mind flashes to a potentially cool mashup of Three Kings and Jarhead, but Taliban Shuffle seems like a fun story with plenty of room for interesting takes.

Additionally, Tina Fey has signed on to star, and Robert Carlock, who worked with Fey as a writer on 30 Rock, handled the script.  While this hints at a more comedic bent, it’s important to remember that Fey hasn’t shied away from more dramatic roles such as last year’s Admission.  Furthermore, Ficarra and Requa’s feature directing debut, I Love You Phillips Morris, is a dark comedy.  Hit the jump to read the synopsis for Kim Barker’s The Taliban Shuffle.

Warner Bros. is keen on ramping up its animated features division.  The studio is forming a creative consortium “that’s aimed at delivering one ‘high-end’ film per year.”  Said consortium includes John Requa and Glen Ficarra (Crazy, Stupid, Love., Cats & Dogs), Nicholas Stoller (The Muppets, Forgetting Sarah Marshall), Phil Lord and Chris Miller (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, 21 Jump Street), and Jared Stern (Mr. Popper’s Penguins).  Apparently the filmmakers will work both individually and collectively in order to generate animated fare, but they’ll also continue to write and direct live-action films.  Hit the jump for the details on what kinds of films are in development.

Ben Affleck Drops Out of FOCUS; Kristen Stewart Still Attached

As one can imagine, Ben Affleck is a pretty in-demand guy right now.  His third directorial effort, Argo, is a major player in the upcoming awards race, as is Affleck for his stellar work as a director on the timely thriller.  Affleck hasn’t given up his day job just yet, though, and he most recently wrapped a starring role opposite Justin Timberlake in the gambling pic Runner Runner.  However, it looks like his busy schedule has gotten in the way of at least one of his upcoming projects, as he’s been forced to drop out of starring in the Warner Bros. pic Focus opposite Kristen Stewart.  Hit the jump for more on the pic and Affleck’s current schedule.

Kristen Stewart in Talks to Star Opposite Ben Affleck in FOCUS

After The Twilight Saga ends for Kristen Stewart this November 16th, she may have a role lined up to star opposite Ben Affleck in Focus.  We previously reported that Affleck was circling a role, and Warner Bros. was looking to fast-track the project once they found a female lead.  It looks like Stewart is their choice.  Focus, written and directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa of Crazy Stupid Love,  tells the story of a “veteran con man who gets involved with a newcomer to the grifter business. They get involved romantically but that becomes perilous in a business where they lie and cheat for a living. The complications of the encounter haunt them when they meet up again in the future.”  Hit the jump for more.

Ben Affleck in Talks to Lead Glenn Ficarra and John Requa’s FOCUS

Ben Affleck‘s detractors say he should stick to directing or only starring in movies he directs, but I’ve always liked him as an actor.  He’s been in some bad movies, but he wasn’t the reason those movies were bad.  He’s charismatic, compelling, and I’m excited to see what he’ll do if he signs on to star in Focus.  Written and directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa (Crazy Stupid Love.), the movie “tells the story of a veteran con man who gets involved with a newcomer to the grifter business. They get involved romantically but that becomes perilous in a business where they lie and cheat for a living. The complications of the encounter haunt them when they meet up again in the future.”  According to Deadline, Warner Bros. is looking to fast-track the project once they find the right female lead.  As we reported back in April, Ficarra and Requa were hoping to reunite Crazy Stupid Love. stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone for the lead roles, but obviously the filmmakers have decided to move on.

Affleck will next be seen in his great thriller and possible awards contender, Argo.  He’s also starring in the 2013 films To the Wonder and the gambling drama Runner Runner.

CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE Directors Want Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling for FOCUS

The Crazy, Stupid, Love team wants to get the band back together.  Directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa just made a deal with Warner Bros. to direct their script Focus, and Deadline reports that they want to reteam Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling from last year’s successful dramedy.  The new project is called Focus and centers on a veteran con man who becomes romantically involved with a newcomer to the business.  Expectedly (in a business based on deceit), things don’t exactly work out and the complications of their previous encounter “haunt them when they meet up again in the future.”  Hit the jump for more.

CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE. Blu-ray Review

Crazy, Stupid, Love. was directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, best known for having written Bad Santa. They wrote and directed I Love You, Phillip Morris and it seemed of their sensibilities, but with this film they seem to be making a bid to work in the studio system by directing Dan Fogelman‘s script – who’s best known for kids films. The film stars Steve Carell as a man going through a divorce and gets dating advice from Ryan Gosling on how to close a deal. But Carell is still in love with his wife, Julianne Moore, and Gosling connects with Emma Stone, which throws a monkey wrench into their bar scene days. Our review of Crazy, Stupid, Love. on Blu-ray follows after the jump.

MONEYBALL Author Michael Lewis to Adapt His Non-Fiction Novel LIAR’S POKER for Directors John Requa and Glenn Ficarra

by     Posted 2 years, 340 days ago

Author Michael Lewis has seen his non-fiction novels The Blind Side and Moneyball adapted by other writers into successful movies.  Now he’ll be taking a crack at adapting one of his books as  THR reports that Lewis is set to adapt his debut non-fiction novel Liar’s Poker for Warner Bros with John Requa and Glenn Ficarra (Crazy, Stupid, Love.) attached to direct.  The book was released in 1989 and Warners has been trying to adapt it since 1990.  Liar’s Poker recounts Lewis’ time working as bond trader for Salomon Brothers and captures the 1980s Wall Street culture, “especially how the firm single-handedly created a market for mortgage bonds that made the firm wealthy, only to be outdone by Michael Milken and his junk bonds.” [Thanks, Wikipedia!] Lewis quit the firm in 1988 to write the book and become a financial journalist.  His most recent financial book was The Big Short, which is being adapted by Paramount and Brad Pitt’s Plan B production company.

Lewis tells THR he plans to write the script for Liar’s Poker over the next two months.  You can check out a synopsis of the book after the jump.  As for Requa and Ficarra, the duo is also planning to direct a new film based around middle-aged guys going on a backpacking trip.

CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE. Directors Re-Teaming with Steve Carell for New Film

Crazy, Stupid, Love. directors Glenn Ficarra & John Requa are planning to re-team with Steve Carell for a new untitled film.  The I Love You Phillip Morris writer-directors tell Moviehole, “We’re working on something with Steve also, that he’s producing. He’s not starring but it’s based on the idea he had. We wrote the script already. It’s one of these three friends from college, but now they’re in their 40s, movies. They’re going on a European backpacking trip that that they never did. And it’s filled with all this middle-aged fun.”  However, Ficarra adds, that the script “doesn’t have a happy ending.”

It’s not too surprising that Carell wouldn’t be attached to star (although that could certainly change if he so chooses) since he has so many other projects on his plate.  His next three films are Seeking a Friend at the End of the World with Keira Knightley, Great Hope Springs with Meryl Streep, and the magician comedy Burt Wonderstone.  He’s also reportedly attached to Mail-Order Groom with Tina Fey, Get Smart 2 (which he also wrote), Raised by Wolfs, The Abstinence Teacher, A Boyfriend for My Wife, Of All the Things, and Dogs of Babel.

I LOVE YOU, PHILLIP MORRIS Blu-Ray Review

John Requa and Glenn Ficarra’s I Love You, Phillip Morris arrived last year, but if you weren’t paying very close attention to the movie listings at your local arthouse theater, you might have missed it.  The film stars Jim Carrey as an exceptionally gay con-man who will go to any lengths to keep himself happy, and– according to rumor– the film’s sometimes-graphic gay sex scenes scared Hollywood away from opening the film like any other Jim Carrey-led comedy.  So, is it really that graphic?  Or were all those rumors much ado about nothing?  And does any of it really matter when the film’s this funny?  Read on for our full I Love You, Phillip Morris review.

Trailer for CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE. Starring Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling

Warner Bros. has released a trailer for the upcoming dramedy Crazy, Stupid, Love. and it looks surprisingly charming.  The film stars Steve Carell as a man struggling with his divorce and finding guidance from a ladies man played by Ryan Gosling. The strong cast also boasts Julianne Moore, Emma Stone, Marisa Tomei, and Kevin Bacon.  Crazy, Stupid, Love. looks like it’s going to have a tricky balancing act with making the humor not too broad and the drama not to schmaltzy, but I’m betting that I Love You Phillip Morris directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa can pull it off.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  Crazy, Stupid, Love. opens July 29th.

First Image from CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE

by     Posted 3 years, 254 days ago

Warner Bros. has released the first image from director’s Glenn Ficarra and John Requa (I Love You Phillip Morris) Crazy, Stupid, Love which features Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Julianne Moore, Emma Stone, Jonah Bobo John Carroll Lynch, Marisa Tomei, Kevin Bacon, Analeigh Tipton, Josh Groban, Liza Lapira, and Joey King.  The premise is Steve Carell has been living the dream life (good job, nice house, great kids) when he finds out his wife wants a divorce.  Since he’s been out of the dating scene for decades, he starts spending his time with a thirty something player (Ryan Gosling) and he becomes his wingman and protege.  As you might imagine, comedy ensues.

While many of you missed I Love You Phillip Morris, it’s a gem that deserves your time.  In addition, Ficarra and Requa wrote Bad Santa, so anyone thinking Crazy, Stupid, Love might be a cookie cutter Hollywood release, I think it’s safe to assume it won’t be.  Personally, I can’t wait to check this out.  I’d imagine a trailer will hit soon. Until then, hit the jump for the full synopsis and the image.

I LOVE YOU PHILLIP MORRIS Review

by     Posted 3 years, 272 days ago

“Be yourself,” is a quaint piece of advice that’s helpful as long as your life is uncomplicated and you’re a genuinely good person who is bound to be accepted by everyone you meet.  Or you could be Stephen Russell, a gay con man who was enjoyed living a lie whether he was in the closet or out of it.  I Love You Phillip Morris has the potential to really delve into some fulfilling satire of American attitudes towards homosexual.  However, the film is more interested in examining Russell as a larger-than-life individual and using broad dark comedy to make its mark.  The film delivers laughs, but it never aspires to leave much of a lasting impression.

Red-Band Trailer for I LOVE YOU PHILLIP MORRIS Starring Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor

by     Posted 3 years, 315 days ago

The delightfully foul-mouthed red-band trailer for I Love You Phillip Morris has gone online.  The film stars Jim Carrey as real-life con-man Steven Russell who comes out of the closet only to discover that “being gay is really expensive”.  While in prison, he falls in love with Phillip Morris (Ewan McGregor) and goes to great lengths to continue their relationship.  The film has received positive notices ever since it first played at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.  After numerous delays, it’s finally getting released in the U.S. and I can’t wait to see it.

Hit the jump to check out the red-band trailer.  I Love You Phillip Morris opens on December 3rd.
