As someone whose only firsthand experience with the Star Trek franchise comes by virtue of J.J. Abrams' two Trek films, I know I'm in over my head when the topic presents itself. When you mention Trek, you're referencing (either directly or indirectly) a rich legacy filled with peaks and valleys, genre-defining characters and moments, and an international fanbase that rivals any of pop-culture's most enduring titles. And yet here I am, with two films under my belt (both of which I enjoyed), talking about it. Obviously, I have nothing at stake with regards to Star Trek Into Darkness. Whether you like it or dislike it is of no consequence to me. My only aim today is to extend a humble word of caution to the Trek fans who have years of equity built-up in their beloved franchise: be careful not to dismiss or begrudge it solely because it's trying to appeal to the largest possible audience. Abrams' Trek films aren't above reproach, but they also aren't void of redeeming qualities. Try to at least acknowledge some of those qualities when tearing into them or risk coming off as someone whose real issue is that a bunch of people now enjoy this thing that you once considered yourself unique for liking.
All preachiness aside, this week's Top 5 includes several interviews from Star Trek Into Darkness, rumors surrounding Christopher Nolan being approached to direct James Bond 24, the first trailers for Marvel's new ABC series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., a new trailer for ...

Director Jose Padilha is heading back into the crime thriller world. The filmmaker first broke onto the scene with his Brazilian crime pics Elite Squad and Elite Squad: The Enemy Within before landing the directing gig on MGM’s RoboCop remake, and now Heat Vision reports that he is next set to direct the true crime thriller The Brotherhood for Warner Bros. The pic is an adaptation of Guy Lawson and William Oldham’s book The Brotherhoods: The True Story of Two Cops Who Murdered for the Mafia and centers on two corrupt detectives who secretly worked for two crime families for years while throwing cases, scrapping evidence, and even killing for the mob. Oldham—another detective—eventually brought the two to justice after tracking them for nearly a decade.

The story most definitely has a Departed feel to it, and should make for a rather intriguing crime drama. Dan Lin (Gangster Squad) is producing and Bill Dubuque (The Judge) wrote the script. Padilha’s RoboCop remake hits theaters next February. Hit the jump to read a synopsis for The Brotherhoods.

Here’s a synopsis for The Brotherhoods:

From inside the heart of the NYPD - The shattering police corruption scandal and the trial that stunned a city.
Detective Stephen Caracappa achieved the distinguished rank of first grade detectve while under the hire of the Luchese crime family.

Detective Louis Eppolito worked the heart of Brooklyn's mobland; he himself was the son of a Gambino crime family soldier.

Detective William Oldham, the lead investigator on major organized-crime cases, quietly and relentlessly tracked ...

Fans of RoboCop are interested to see how director Jose Padilha's remake is going to differ from the 1987 original. It seems a new featurette has been released that goes a long way in answering that question. Featuring concept art for multiple generations of RoboCop's suit, a re-imagined ED-209, unmmanned drones and futuristic weaponry, the video also includes commentary from star Joel Kinnaman and director Padilha, along with producer Eric Newman, VFX Supervisor Jamie Price and Production Designer Martin Whist.

RoboCop, also starring Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Keaton, Gary Oldman, Abbie Cornish, Jay Baruchel and Jackie Earle Haley, opens in theaters February 7th, 2014. Hit the jump to check it out, along with some new images of both concept art and a new suit.

Check out the featurette below (via CBM) followed by some new images of concept art and from the RoboCop set (via Omelete). If the commentary and concept art are to be believed, the image of the new suit may not be RoboCop's at all, but one of the mass-produced models from OmniCorp. Here are some highlights from the featurette:

Padilha implicitly contrasts the motivation for Kinnaman's Alex Murphy to become RoboCop to that of Iron Man's Tony Stark.
RoboCop will explore this technology in a global setting on both military and law enforcement levels.
Since OmniCorp is a business, RoboCop will show the R&D process of the RoboCop models, with the first version being similar to the original suit and the newer version being the sleek black one seen in recent images.
RoboCop is also meant to be a product, one that can be ...

New images from the set of director Jose Padilha's RoboCop remake show off more looks at the film's futuristic vehicles. We've seen glimpses of the cop car and taxi before, and the motorcycle popped up recently, but now we have much more extensive looks at all of them. With all these vehicles to wash and wax, it's no wonder the film was recently bumped to 2014. As a bonus, we finally know the answer to why Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman) retains one human hand as the cyborg-cop: bunny fingers.

RoboCop stars Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Keaton, Abbie Cornish, Jay Baruchel and Jackie Earle Haley. RoboCop opens February 7th, 2014. Hit the jump to see the images.

Here's a video we were sent from a Toronto reader named Mike:

Check out the images of the vehicles from the RoboCop remake below (via CBM):

Here’s the official synopsis for RoboCop:
In RoboCop, the year is 2029 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. Their drones are winning American wars around the globe and now they want to bring this technology to the home front. Alex Murphy is a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit. After he is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp utilizes their remarkable science of robotics to save Alex’s life. He returns to the streets of his beloved city with amazing new abilities, but with issues a regular man has never had to face before.

Let's all do the release date shuffle, courtesy of Sony!

RoboCop, the Jose Padilha-directed remake starring Joel Kinnaman, has been bumped from its August 9th, 2013 spot to February 7th, 2014.
Taking over the former RoboCop spot will be Neill Blomkamp's Elysium, starring Matt Damon. The picture moves from March 1st, 2013 to August 9th, 2013. (Fun fact: Blomkamp's District 9 was released that same week in 2009.)
Cloudy 2: Revenge of the Leftovers will move up from its previous spot of February 7th, 2014 to September 27th, 2013. The animated feature will land on roughly the same weekend as this year's hit, Hotel Transylvania.
Pixels, the Happy Madison production based on an 8-bit French short, is listed as "in development" and won't make a 2014 release, though it was previously pegged for May 17, 2013.

Hit the jump for more on each of these pictures.

All new release dates come courtesy of Box Office Mojo. Take a look at the posters and synopses for the movies below:

We've only been able to get glimpses of director Jose Padilha's RoboCop reboot via a bunch of set photos and today's no different. What is different is that this batch of photos show off Michael Keaton as the OmniCorp CEO Raymond Sellars, Michael Kenneth Williams as Alex Murphy's (Joel Kinnaman) partner Officer Jack Lewis and Abbie Cornish as Murphy's wife, Ellen. Oh and some more shots of Kinnaman in his cyborg attire. The picture also seem to confirm that Kinnaman's Murphy will retain a human right hand: a corporate attempt to show the supercop's human side or an Achilles' heel of sorts?

RoboCop opens August 9th 2013 and also stars Gary Oldman, Jay Baruchel and Jackie Earle Haley. Hit the jump to see the new set photos.

Check out the new set photos below (via CBM):

We previously brought you the first looks at Joel Kinnaman (The Killing) in a new version of his RoboCop suit, but now we have a few more looks at Kinnaman as the 100% human Alex Murphy. Speaking of superhumans, director Jeff Wadlow recently tweeted a number of photos of the Kick-Ass 2 cast in costume. Though none are as awesome as the first look at Jim Carrey as Colonel Stars, these set photos do have that "official" ring to them.

Director Jose Padilha's RoboCop also stars Abbie Cornish, Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Keaton and Jackie Earle Haley and opens August 9th, 2013. Kick-Ass 2, starring Aaron Johnson, Chloe Grace Moretz and Christopher Mintz-Plasse, opens June 28th of next year. Hit the jump to see the new images.

The RoboCop photos come courtesy of CBM while the Kick-Ass 2 images are from Wadlow's Twitter account. Enjoy!

The internets were thrown for a loop this past weekend when the first set images of Joel Kinnaman in full costume for director Jose Padilha’s upcoming Robocop remake landed online on the very first day of production. The suit design is quite different from the one seen in Paul Verhoeven’s original, and fans felt pretty strongly about the redesign. Now even more images from the Toronto set have surfaced, giving us a closer look at Kinnaman’s headpiece (he’s wearing a robe to hide the rest of the suit) as well as co-star Abbie Cornish and some of the film’s futuristic modes of transportation. I’m with Matt in that I’m reserving an opinion until some official images hit the web since there may be multiple suits in the film and it’s a tad unfair to judge the costume out of context.

Hit the jump to check out the images, and be sure to check out the teaser banner that landed online earlier today. The film also stars Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Keaton, Jay Baruchel, and Jackie Earle Haley. RoboCop opens on August 9th, 2013.

Well, that didn't take long. Filming on director Jose Padilha's Robocop reboot began in Toronto today and already the first images of Joel Kinnaman as the part man/part machine in his new coat of armor have surfaced online. As a diehard fan of Paul Verhoeven's original, it's likely that no design for RoboCop's new suit would have been able to escape my scorn. In an attempt to remain as civil as possible, though, I'll say the sleek, trimmed down design looks to give Murphy a more lightweight approach than the original. In terms of contemporary design comparisons, I'm thinking Dredd 3D meets Pacific Rim. Check out both images of Kinnaman and his new suit after the jump.
Currently slated to hit theaters on August 9th, 2013, Padilha's Robocop reboot also stars Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Keaton, Abbie Cornish, Jay Baruchel, and Jackie Earle Haley. [Update: Click here to check out the new hi-res teaser banner for the film]
Here's the full synopsis for the reboot:

I have a confession to make: I've dropped too much cash on sweet, sweet movie poster prints and frames the last month or so. In addition to my Mondo/Jock The Dark Knight Rises print (which was secured for me by my friend and fellow Collider teammate, Bill Graham), I've also picked up Mondo/Phantom City Creative's The Cabin in the Woods and this little Drive gem by artist Louis Fernando Cruz all in a matter of a few weeks. While I couldn't be any happier with my purchases (well, I could have stood to pay a little less for The Cabin in the Woods), the truth remains that I'm quickly running out of wall space and disposable income. With all of this in mind, I do have to give a big "thank you" to my wife for tolerating my plans to adorn our house with movie posters. I've promised her that my buying flurry will now subside. Unless, of course, someone out there has a Gallery 1988/Rhys Cooper Robocop print they want to part with on the cheap, in which case, I think I have just enough wall space and unaccounted for monies to make one last purchase.
Poster hunting aside, in this week's edition of the Top 5, I've compiled for your reading pleasure our Lawless interviews with Shia LaBeouf, screenwriter/composer Nick Cave, and more, a week filled with rumors surrounding Warner Bros.' Justice League pic, For a Good Time, Call... video interviews with Ari Graynor, Lauren Miller, and more, a well ...

While things haven't exactly been going smoothly for director Jose Padilha's RoboCop reboot lately, the acquisition of Michael Keaton (Batman) as the villain will surely go a long way to remedy that. Hugh Laurie (House, M.D.) was previously attached to play the antagonist but talks recently broke down. Keaton would be playing Raymond Sellars, the CEO of Omnicorp, the corporation that builds RoboCop. The reboot of Paul Verhoeven's 1987 cult classic stars Joel Kinnaman in the title role. Hit the jump for more on the remake and to read what Padilha had to say about Keaton coming on board.

Deadline reports that Keaton will star in RoboCop as the villain, a role that was previously thought to go to Clive Owen after Laurie had passed. Here's what the director had to say about the veteran actor joining his production:
“Michael is the final addition to the amazing cast we have assembled for this film and it is so great to have the last puzzle piece in place. It is thrilling that everything has come together to bring this innovative new vision of RoboCop to life. We’ve got a great script, a great cast, some killer ED-209’s and I can’t wait to get Alex Murphy back on the streets."
Some of that cast Padilha mentioned includes Samuel L. Jackson, Gary Oldman and Abbie Cornish. The picture is set to start production next month with a release date scheduled for August 9th, 2013. Be sure to keep up with our continuing coverage of the RoboCop remake as production moves along.

Though production has yet to beging, things aren’t exactly looking up for MGM’s RoboCop remake. Earlier this month, HitFix’s Drew McWheeny got his hands on a copy of the script and gave it a rather scathing review, and just last week we learned that talks with Hugh Laurie to play the film’s villain broke down. Now word comes that director Jose Padilha isn’t exactly having an easy time getting his vision across. He’s apparently having to fight for every idea he has, and most of what he wants is being turned down by the studio. Hit the jump for more.

The quotes actually come not from Padilha, but from his good friend Fernando Meirelles (City of God). Here’s what he had to say to Cinemacom Rapadura (via ScreenCrush):
"I talked to José Padilha for a week by phone. He will begin filming Robocop. He is saying that it is the worst experience. For every 10 ideas he has, 9 are cut. Whatever he wants, he has to fight… 'This is hell here,' he told me. 'The film will be good, but I never suffered so much and do not want to do it again.' He is bitter, but it’s a fighter."
The wording’s a little rough because it’s been through Google Translator, but the gist is there. This is Padilha’s first major feature film (he previously directed Elite Squad), so it’s not exactly surprising that MGM is keeping a close watch on the property. That said, it sounds like the studio is really ...

Jackie Earle Haley is joining director Jose Padilha’s RoboCop remake. Joel Kinnaman is set as the titular police officer who becomes a cybernetically-enhanced justice dealer following mortal injuries, and now Deadline reports that Haley will play Maddox, the man who “dispense the military training to RoboCop.” Moreover, Jay Baruchel is apparently circling another lead role. These actors make yet even more fantastic additions to an impressive cast that now includes Hugh Laurie as the antagonist, Gary Oldman as the scientist who creates RoboCop, Samuel L. Jackson as a charismatic TV mogul, and Abbie Cornish as Kinnaman’s wife.

Production on RoboCop is poised to begin soon in order to meet its August 9th, 2013 release date. Hit the jump to read the synopsis for the redo.

Here’s the synopsis for RoboCop:
In RoboCop, the year is 2029 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. Their drones are winning American wars around the globe and now they want to bring this technology to the home front. Alex Murphy is a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit. After he is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp utilizes their remarkable science of robotics to save Alex’s life. He returns to the streets of his beloved city with amazing new abilities, but with issues a regular man has never had to face before.

Director José Padilha (Elite Squad) reimagines the tale of part man, part machine, all cop starring Joel ...

We knew that RoboCop was getting a hard reset with the upcoming reboot starring Joel Kinnaman, but thanks to a new press release, we now have some details about the plot itself. The original 1987 Paul Verhoeven picture starred Peter Weller as a cybernetically-enhanced super-cop who dealt swift justice in Detroit. The new version keeps the same city and the same nucleus of the story, but introduces new elements. From director Jose Padilha, RoboCop, also starring Gary Oldman, Hugh Laurie, Abbie Cornish and Samuel L. Jackson, opens August 9th, 2013. Hit the jump to read the full press release.

Check out the full press release below, with the synopsis in bold:

The announcement was made by Gary Barber and Roger Birnbaum, Co-Chairman and Chief Executive Officers of MGM, and Olivier Courson, Chairman and CEO of Studio Canal.

“MGM is thrilled to be bringing RoboCop back to the big screen,” said Gary Barber and Roger Birnbaum, Co-Chairman and Chief Executive Officers of MGM. “Studio Canal is the ideal partner to help us share the reimagined, action-packed classic with audiences in the UK, France and Germany.”

In an awesomely developing story, Hugh Laurie (House, M.D.) is in talks to play a villain in Jose Padilha's upcoming Robocop reboot. The former sarcastic doctor on Fox's long-running series is in negotiations to play a cold, sarcastic CEO of Omnicorp, a mega-corporation responsible for the creation of Robocop. Laurie certainly has the swagger to play a CEO and I'm thrilled at the prospect of him playing a villain. Details are scarce at the moment, but it seems as if his character would be similar to the one played by Ronny Cox in the 1987 Paul Verhoeven original. Hit the jump for more.

Variety reported that Laurie was in talks to star as OmniCorp's CEO, but offers few details other than that. In the original story, Cox played an up-and-coming executive in Omni Consumer Products who failed (quite spectacularly) to provide a suitable weapon for the company's new contract with the local police force. As his character is later revealed to have villainous ties, this might be along the lines of what Padilha has in mind for Laurie. Then again, the script by James Vanderbilt, Josh Zetumer and Nick Schenk may have a different antagonist in mind.

Either way, the Robocop reboot stars Joel Kinnaman (The Killing) in the title role with Abbie Cornish (Sucker Punch) in talks to join as his wife. Previously cast were Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight) as the scientist responsible for Robocop's creation and Samuel L. Jackson (The Avengers) as a media mogul. Production is scheduled ...

Casting for the Robocop remake is moving right along, and hot off the heels of yesterday’s news that Samuel L. Jackson is in talks to join director Jose Padilha’s redo comes word that Abbie Cornish (Sucker Punch) may sign on as the film’s female lead. The Killing star Joel Kinnaman is set as the titular star, a cop who—following an incident on duty—is remade as the robot infused supercop. Deadline reports that Cornish has been offered the role of Kinnaman’s wife, who thinks she is a widow. Cornish would make yet another swell addition to an increasingly impressive cast, as Gary Oldman is set to play the scientist who is responsible for creating Robocop.

Production on the film begins in September, and Kinnaman recently described this new version of the Paul Verhoeven sci-fi classic as “a new story within the old one,” so it certainly sounds like we’re in for something other than a paint-by-numbers rehash of the original film. Cornish will next be seen in In Bruges director Martin McDonagh’s Seven Psychopaths with Colin Farrell and Sam Rockwell.

Samuel L. Jackson is making the shift from superheroes to violent robots. Heat Vision reports that Jackson is joining the increasingly impressive cast of director Jose Padilha’s Robocop remake, taking on the role of a “charismatic TV mogul and a powerful force in the Robocop world.” The Killing star Joel Kinnaman is set in the lead role, and Gary Oldman recently signed on to star as the scientist responsible for creating Robocop in the first place. While I was fairly ambivalent about the prospect of this remake throughout its development, these three interesting casting choices make the film much more appealing.

Kinnaman recently described the update as “a new story within the old one,” so it’s safe to assume that Padilha’s version will differ quite a bit from the original Paul Verhoeven film. Production is scheduled to begin this September in Toronto with an eye towards a possible summer 2013 release.

This morning we spoke by phone to actor Joel Kinnaman in London about his upcoming contemporary romantic comedy, Lola Versus, which opens in theaters on June 8th. We will run the full interview later in the week, but we wanted to share today what Kinnaman had to say about his upcoming role in the RoboCop reboot which starts shooting in September. He talked to us about working with director José Padilha, being a fan of the original film directed by Paul Verhoeven, how Padilha plans to make the remake different from Verhoeven's version while still throwing nods to the original film in, why he believes retelling a story can break new ground, and his excitement at having the opportunity to work opposite Gary Oldman whom he considers a master at his craft. He also revealed his favorite Oldman films and why he believes Gary should have won the Oscar for his role in Soldier Tailor Tinker Spy. Check out what he had to say after the jump.

When do you start filming RoboCop?

KINNAMAN: In September. It’s very exciting.

Are you surprised by the level of interest?

KINNAMAN: A little bit, yeah. It’s like when you say one thing, it’s everywhere, and that’s pretty awesome and a little bit intimidating. It makes you realize you have to think before speaking. That’s a quality I’m continuously evolving. For some reason, it seems like I’m bumping my head into the wall a little bit too many times, but now I think I’m doing alright. It’s fantastic. I used to be like “Why are ...

Director Jose Padilha got off to a nice start with setting The Killing star Joel Kinnaman as the lead in the Robocop reboot, and now he’s landed a very fine actor to star alongside Kinnaman. Heat Vision reports that Gary Oldman has signed on to star as Norton, the scientist who creates Robocop and “finds himself torn between the ideals of the machine trying to rediscover its humanity and the callous needs of a corporation.” Oldman’s a terrific actor and I’m eager to see how big of a role this Norton character will be in Padilha's iteration of the story.

No production start-date has yet been set, but with an August 9th, 2013 release date looming the film is apparently eying a shoot in Toronto. Kinnaman recently talked about the film and said that he can’t imagine how it could be PG-13, so hopefully we’re in for an R-rated Robocop. That would definitely be a rarity in a sea of PG-13 actioners, but its possible that Ridley Scott’s R-rated Prometheus could alter studio thinking if it does really well.

Earlier this afternoon, Collider was invited to participate in roundtable interviews for Season 2 of the AMC drama series The Killing, which premieres on April 1st. While Season 1 was all about questions and red herrings, Season 2 promises to start uncovering the answers while delving into and exploring the notion that everyone has past secrets that are now coming back to haunt them. And, the resolution of who killed Rosie Larson (Katie Findlay) will be answered at the conclusion of this season.

We will run what the actors had to say about the show’s return later in the week, but we did want to share what actor Joel Kinnaman had to say about his upcoming role in the RoboCop reboot, working with director José Padilha, his love of the original film and Paul Verhoeven’s work (including Starship Troopers), how they start shooting in August, and how adamant he is about the importance of an R rating for the film. Check out what he had to say after the jump.

Collider: You’re already pretty famous in Sweden, aren’t you?

Joel Kinnaman: Yeah.

Are you prepared for all of this attention in the States now? When do you start shooting RoboCop?

Kinnaman: I start shooting that in August. It’s gonna be really fun! It’s frustrating when you come over here, especially from a position that I was in, in Sweden, where most people know who you are, but then you come here. There’s also a different financing system with movies here. Mid-range to low-budget movies ...
