Laura Dern and Judd Apatow Putting Together a Female Football Comedy for Universal

A female football movie?  Laura Dern and Judd Apatow caught got my attention with that!  It’s being reported that Dern came up with an idea for a comedy about obsessive female football fans and that Apatow is helping her develop it for Universal.  Hamlet 2 and Hot Rod scribe Pam Brady is penning the script, but other than that, we don’t know much more about the project.

It wouldn’t come as a surprise if Dern winds up scoring a role in the film, but right now she’s only set to produce alongside Barry Mendel and Apatow on behalf of Apatow Productions.  Hit the jump for more.

This could be really good.  Paul Rust (I Love You, Beth Cooper) and Gillian Jacobs (Community, Girls) will co-star in Love, a new Netflix series from Rust, Judd Apatow and Leslie Arfin (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Girls).  In a bold move of confidence, Netflix has picked up the show for two seasons already.  The first 10 episodes will air in 2015, with another 12 on the way in 2016.  Legendary Television will produce as well.

Love follows Gus (Paul Rust) and Mickey (Gillian Jacobs) as they navigate the exhilarations and humiliations of intimacy, commitment, and other things they were hoping to avoid.  The show will be a half-hour series.  Hit the jump for more on Love.

The Lonely Island Movie Set Up at Universal; Judd Apatow to Produce

The time has come for The Lonely Island movie.  Universal has acquired an untitled comedy project from the Lonely Island trio of Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone, with Schaffer and Taccone onboard to co-direct.  THR reports that the three will also star in the movie, which takes place in the music world.  Additionally, Judd Apatow will produce the film alongside Samberg, Schaffer, and Taccone.  Further details are unknown at this time (like whether they’ll be playing wholly original characters or versions of their Lonely Island selves), but the prospect of seeing a music-centric film from the brains behind “Dick in a Box”, “Lazy Sunday”, and “Jizz in My Pants” is wonderfully exciting.  More after the jump.

Christopher Nolan, Quentin Tarantino, J.J. Abrams, and More Band Together to Keep Kodak Film Alive; Deal Being Struck with Studios

Though the rise of digital photography only began a little over a decade ago, the switch to digital has been on an exponential rise in the past few years, which has seen traditional film violently sidelined.  One might think it’d be beneficial to all to have a choice between shooting on digital or on film, and it is, but the final say really comes down to a business decision on the studio’s part.  Shooting digitally is now far cheaper than shooting on film, not only because you’re not paying for film prints, but because shooting digitally actually makes the production move at a faster pace.  However, there are a few highly regarded filmmakers who have been lobbying hard to keep film alive, and it appears that their activism has led to a serious deal between studios and Kodak that will keep the film company (the last of its kind) from going out of business.

Hit the jump for more on this deal, which was championed by the likes of Christopher Nolan and J.J. Abrams.

First Look at Amy Schumer and Bill Hader in Judd Apatow’s TRAINWRECK

by     Posted 155 days ago

The first Trainwreck image from director Judd Apatow’s next feature has arrived.  Unlike his previous directorial efforts, Apatow didn’t write the script for Trainwreck—the film’s star, Amy Schumer did.  Schumer has gained notoriety for her hilarious and socially conscious sense of humor on her Comedy Central series Inside Amy Schumer, but Trainwreck puts her front and center as the star of a major studio film.  The story, which draws heavily from Schumer’s real-life experiences, revolves around “a commitment-averse woman trying to get past her self-sabotaging ways.”  Apatow tells the New York Times that when working on the screenplay, he pushed the comic to dig into her own vulnerabilities, “almost like a therapist thing.”  As if the promise of a Schumer-fronted comedy wasn’t enough, the versatile Bill Hader plays her character’s potential love interest in the film.  Very promising stuff.

Hit the jump to take a look at the first Trainwreck image, which comes from the set.  The eclectic cast also includes Tilda Swinton, Brie Larson, Daniel Radcliffe, Colin Quinn, Mike Birbiglia, LeBron James, and Method ManTrainwreck opens in theaters on July 24, 2015.

ANCHORMAN 2: THE LEGEND CONTINUES Blu-ray Will Have 3 Versions of the Film and 90 Minutes of Deleted, Extended and Alternate Scenes

Anchorman-2-The-Legend-Continues-slice

If you’re a fan of the Anchorman series, you might want to take a few days off starting April 1st.  That’s because Paramount has just announced the Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues Blu-ray and it’s loaded with awesome extras.  While I knew we’d get some cool stuff based on what director Adam McKay included with the first Anchorman Blu-ray, the sequel lifts the bar to another level.  Here’s a few of the highlights:

  • Three versions of the film—the original Theatrical Version, the Unrated Version and the Super-Sized R-Rated Version with 763 new jokes (the super-sized edition plays in theaters for one-week starting February 28th. More details here)
  • More than 90 minutes of deleted, extended and alternate scenes
  • Commentary by Adam McKay, Judd Apatow, Will Ferrell, Steve Carell, Paul Rudd and David Koechner
  • Line-O-Rama, Parts 1 & 2—Non-stop alternate lines from the film
  • Welcome to the Dolphin Show—Ron Burgundy takes on the crowd
  • Kench-O-Rama—Mashup of Kench Allenby’s most Australian moments
  • Cast Table Read
  • Anchorman 2: The Musical—A look at the musical sequel that almost was
  • Auditions—Featuring Meagan Good, Dylan Baker and Amy Poehler

And this isn’t everything, as the Blu-ray includes 4 hours of bonus content.  While Paramount has screwed the fans over a number of different ways with their recent home video releases (look at what they did for Star Trek: Into Darkness), I’m happy they’re including all these extras in the same place.  Hit the jump for the full list on the press release and click here to get it for $19.99 (which is 50% off on Amazon).

Judd Apatow’s Next Film TRAINWRECK Set for July 24, 2015 Release

by     Posted 346 days ago

judd-apatow-amy-schumer-trainwreck

Universal Pictures has set a release date for Judd Apatow’s next directorial effort Trainwreck.  The pic, which was written by and will star Amy Schumer, will open in theaters on July 24, 2015, just one week after the release of Batman vs. Superman and one week before Edgar Wright’s Marvel film Ant-Man starring Paul Rudd.  We learned a couple of months ago that Apatow had settled on Trainwreck as his follow-up to This Is 40, and the film marks Apatow’s first directorial feature that he did not write himself, though he did develop the project with Schumer before she wrote the script.  Schumer will star as “a basket case who tries to rebuild her life, but still to be found are her boyfriend, a best friend/co-worker and a parent.”

Schumer is a stand up comedian who is best known for writing and starring in the Comedy Central sketch series Inside Amy Schumer, which will air its second season this coming March.  Casting on Trainwreck is underway, so expect to hear more news about the project in the coming months.

TOP 5: INTERSTELLAR Trailer, ANCHORMAN 2: THE LEGEND CONTINUES, First Trailer for 22 JUMP STREET, AMERICAN HUSTLE, “Worst Of” Lists are the Worst

Last night I had the opportunity to catch Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues and I have to say that I walked away with mixed feelings. For the most part, the laughs were there (especially the scenes with Greg Kinnear and the “getting the team back together” sequence early on). I also thought the decision to place the Channel 4 News Team at the dawn of the 24 hour news cycle was great in that it gave Ron and Co. the chance to be pioneers of the trade and provided the pic solid footing from which to deliver its well-placed jabs at the current state of the broadcast news industry. On the other hand, some of the film’s gags and multiple cameos landed with a huge thud for me and I’m still a little surprised at how ridiculously over the top it becomes in the final 20 minutes or so (even for an Anchorman sequel). All in all, if you enjoyed the original then I think there’s enough magic left in the tank that you’ll have fun with The Legend Continues. Just don’t be surprised if you leave the theater less than thrilled to experience the next installment in Ron Burgundy’s story.

My notes aside, this week’s Top 5 highlights the first trailer for Christopher Nolan‘s Interstellar, interviews with Will Ferrell and more for Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, the first trailer for 22 Jump Street, American Hustle interviews with Christian Bale and more, and Matt’s editorial on why “Worst Of” lists are, for the lack of a better word, the worst. Read on for a brief recap and link to each of the above.

Adam McKay and Judd Apatow Talk ANCHORMAN 2, Avoiding Direct Callbacks to the Original, the Marketing Campaign, Cameos, and More

Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy is undoubtedly one of the most iconic, beloved, and—dare I say—legendary, comedies of the last 10 years.  And now, the moment we’ve all been waiting for—Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues is finally here.  This is a movie that needs no introduction; the characters are so well known that they can make appearances on actual local news stations in tiny towns across the country.  There is a new Ben and Jerry’s flavor dedicated to Ron Burgundy- Scotchy Scotch Scotch (butterscotch, not the alcohol)- and it is delicious. There is even a new phone game created by Funny Or Die, “Scotchy Scotch Toss” has players toss ice cubes into Ron Burgundy’s glass to win points and hang out with San Diego’s legendary anchorman.

At the press day for the film in New York, I got to participate in a roundtable interview with two of the creative forces behind the film, Adam McKay and Judd Apatow.  McKay directed and co-wrote the script with Will Ferrell, and Apatow produced.  The two answered questions about coming up with the storyline, avoiding direct callbacks to the first film, some of their comedic influences, the cameos in the gang fight, and more.  Hit the jump to read on.

Judd Apatow Will Direct TRAIN WRECK Starring Amy Schumer

by     Posted 1 year, 23 days ago

Back in late August, Universal picked up a script from comedian Amy Schumer, and Judd Apatow signed on to produce.  His producing duties included developing the story and shaping Schumer’s script, and now it looks like he’ll be stepping behind the camera as well.  According to THR, Apatow is currently casting Train Wreck, which will star Schumer “as a basket case who tries to rebuild her life, but still to be found are her boyfriend, a best friend/co-worker and a parent.”  It sounds somewhat in the vein of Bridesmaids (down-and-out woman comically gets her life together), which Apatow produced.  THR reports that the This Is 40 director  “met with actors in Los Angeles throughout November,” and Schumer and producer Barry Mendel (This Is 40) are taking meetings in New York this week.

Train Wreck could be a big breakthrough for Schumer, who wrote and starred in the Comedy Central sketch series Inside Amy Schumer, which was picked up for a second season to air in March 2014.  I wasn’t familiar with the show, but I saw her do standup when I was New York back in October, and she was great.  While Apatow’s last two movies have been over-indulgent, I hope his pairing with Schumer will create a welcome change of pace from his recent directorial efforts.

The very popular sketch duo Key & Peele may be getting the feature film treatment in the near future thanks to the current comedy godfather Judd Apatow.  Former MADtv castmembers Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele first debuted their sketch comedy series Key & Peele on Comedy Central in January 2012, and since then have enjoyed wider success and notoriety as the show has taken off with audiences.  One of its fans appears to be Judd Apatow, as Deadline reports that he will produce an untitled feature comedy vehicle for the duo that will be written by Key and Peele for Universal Pictures.  Hit the jump for more.

Watch Jay-Z’s Performance Art Film PICASSO BABY, Directed by Mark Romanek

Never one to go the traditional route, Jay-Z has taken a rather fascinating approach to the video for his latest single, “Picasso Baby.”  The hip-hop artist collaborated with director Mark Romanek (Never Let Me Go, One Hour Photo) to put together a piece of performance art for the track, and the result is a 10-minute short film called Picasso Baby that debuted on HBO Friday night.  Jay-Z and Romanek set the piece up at Pace Gallery in New York City with the intention of seeing what would happen if Jay-Z performed specifically to a single person instead of an arena full of fans.  The result is a highly entertaining piece of work with appearances by Judd Apatow, Michael K. Williams, Taraji P. Henson, Alan Cumming, Adam Driver, Jim Jarmusch, Jemima Kirke, and many more.

Of course, Romanek has plenty of experience crafting memorable music videos, as he’s the man responsible for Johnny Cash’s “Hurt,” Nine Inch Nails’ “Closer,” and Fiona Apple’s “Criminal.”  He also worked with Jay-Z previously on the video for “99 Problems.”  Hit the jump to watch the performance art film Picasso Baby.

THIS IS 40 Blu-ray Review

It’s weird to think we’re only four movies in to Judd Apatow’s directing career, because for the last ten years he’s become a brand.  Between working with Adam McKay and Will Ferrell on their comedies, to launching Seth Rogen and Kristen Wiig (and more), he established that he was one of the biggest forces in comedy.  But his most recent film, This is 40, came out and it didn’t feel like event.  It’s a modest film that’s enjoyable enough, but feels like a B side.  Our review of This is 40 follows after the jump.
