katee-sackhoff-oculus-interview

The horror flick Oculus tells the story of a beautiful antique mirror whose most recent owners, siblings Kaylie (Karen Gillan) and Tim (Brenton Thwaites), are struggling to rebuild their relationship after the gruesome demise of their parents, 10 years earlier.  While the two attempt to uncover the truth, they also begin to turn on each other, as the malevolent supernatural force of the mirror infects their minds and reflects their own insecurities.

At the film’s press day, Collider spoke to actress Katee Sackhoff (who plays the mother of the siblings in flashbacks) for this exclusive interview about what attracted her to Oculus, being a fan of director Mike Flanagan’s work, how she approached this character, her concerns about having to be intensely physical with the younger actors, and the technical challenges of the show.  She also talked about how Season 3 of her A&E drama series Longmire is going, and how fun it would be to get to further explore her Riddick character, if they make another movie.  Check out what she had to say after the jump.

Relativity Media has released a new trailer for director Mike Flanagan’s (Absentia) new horror film Oculus.  The pic stars Karen Gillan (Doctor Who) and Brenton Thwaites as siblings who set out to prove that an ominous mirror is responsible for the death of their parents 10 years prior, as well as the deaths of countless others over the centuries.  The film looks to have a fascinating structure, as the lines between the past and the present are blurred and twisted until they become a part of the overall horror conceit.

Relativity has released the first trailer for the horror film, Oculus.  The film premiered as part of the Midnight Madness lineup at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, and per the festival’s synopsis, the story is about “two damaged siblings (Karen Gillan and Brenton Thwaites) who, as children, witnessed their parents’ harrowing descent into madness and murder. At long last, brother and sister reunite as adults to expose and destroy the paranormal entity they believe is responsible: the Lasser Glass — a legendary mirror their family once owned.”  This trailer doesn’t touch the plot at all, and instead opts to showcase the spooky tone and imagery.

Opening this weekend is writer-director David Twohy’s Riddick.  The R-rated film finds Vin Diesel’s character being hunted by mercenaries, and once again, they’re hopelessly outmatched by the anti-hero who can see in the dark.  But the mercs and their bounty are forced to team up when lethal alien monsters attack.  If you’re a fan of Pitch Black, you’re going to be very happy watching Riddick.  The film also stars Matt NableKatee SackhoffJordi MollaDave BautistaRaoul TrujilloBokeem Woodbine and Nolan Gerard Funk.

At the recent press day in Los Angeles I landed an exclusive interview with Katee Sackhoff.  She talked about making the film, what surprised her about the filming process,  how she was cut out of Pitch Perfect (but still gets residuals), the best part of attending conventions, Twitter, what she collects, Oculus, and much more.

New Featurette for RIDDICK

Universal has released new featurette for the sci-fi/action film, Riddick.  It opens with a slight contradiction between Vin Diesel and director David Twohy.  Diesel says “We always wanted it to be three films,” but then Twohy follows with “It was a question of where do we go next?”  The implication of a trilogy signals that they knew how it would be resolved, but clearly that wasn’t the case.  That’s not necessarily a bad thing.  Just because a film is planned that doesn’t mean the final result will be good and vice versa.  This featurette contains new footage, and does a good job of laying out the story without giving too much away, although there is no alien-puppy-saving.

Katee Sackhoff Talks LONGMIRE Season 2 Finale, Hopes for Season 3, and Nervousness About Playing the Female Lead in RIDDICK

katee sackhoff longmire

The Season 2 finale of the A&E drama series Longmire premieres on August 26th and things are sure to be explosive.  Detective Fales (Charles Dutton) returns with warrants, forcing Walt Longmire (Robert Taylor) and Henry Standing Bear (Lou Diamond Phillips) to face what happened in Denver, while Vic Moretti (Katee Sackhoff) will have to deal with what she’s been running from.

During this recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, actress Katee Sackhoff talked about how excited she was to really sink her teeth into Vic’s journey this season, why she thinks Vic and Walt are able to trust each other, what’s it’s been like to work with co-star Robert Taylor, that the finale will wrap up some storylines while raising new questions, that she hopes to hear about whether Season 3 might happen early enough that they can avoid shooting in New Mexico during the hottest time of the year, and that she loves the serialized aspect of the show and is hoping for more of that, in the future.  She also talked about why she’s nervous about the reaction to her work in Riddick, and how great it was to get to be a part of the “Women Who Kick Ass” panel at this year’s Comic-Con.  Check out what she had to say after the jump, and be aware that there are some spoilers.

New Trailer for RIDDICK Starring Vin Diesel

Universal Pictures has released yet another trailer for director David Twohy’s upcoming sci-fi sequel Riddick.  The film finds Vin Diesel’s titular character being hunted by mercenaries, and once again, they’re hopelessly outmatched by the anti-hero who can see in the dark.  But the mercs and their bounty are forced to team up when lethal alien monsters attack.  Everything we’ve seen from the film thus far hints at a movie closer to Pitch Black than The Chronicles of Riddick, and this trailer is no different—though it covers much of the same ground as the restricted trailer that was released during Comic-Con.

Comic-Con: RIDDICK Panel Recap Plus New Restricted Trailer; Vin Diesel Says He Has Some Big News at the End of the Month Related to Marvel

riddick-comic-con-slice

I like Riddick. He’s a gritty character but it doesn’t feel like he’s trying to sell gritty because he’s simply an unapologetic murderer with the superpower to see in the dark. A badass doesn’t have to tell you he’s a badass. It was a charming character in a cult film, and it didn’t translate to something epic in the studio-financed PG-13 sequel. But that flop only made me feel more protective of the character and hopeful that he would return in a better and more fitting story. Riddick looks like a response and a realization: a response to the flaws of The Chronicles of Riddick and a realization to play to the strengths of Pitch Black. While we didn’t see a lot of new stuff during the Comic-Con’s panel, writer/director David Twohy, and stars Vin Diesel and Katee Sackhoff provided a clear vision for the third installment and laying out why their characters are appealing. Unrelated to Riddick, Diesel got a Marvel question during the audience Q&A and gave a reluctant but interesting response.

Hit the jump to read the panel and check out a new restricted trailer. Riddick opens September 6th.

TOP 5: Possible Casting Breakdown for STAR WARS: EPISODE VII, PACIFIC RIM Set Visit, THE WOLF OF WALL STREET Trailer, RIDDICK Set Visit, MAN OF STEEL

In anticipation of checking out Monsters University later today, my wife and I and two of our nephews rewatched Monsters, Inc. last night. It had been probably 10 years or so since I last watched Inc. and all I can say is shame on me for forgetting how good it is. Within the first 15 minutes of the film, during which I had already laughed no fewer than five times, I was reminded why Pixar (if you haven’t already, be sure to check out Brendan’s Pixar by the Numbers editorial) is held to such a high standard: because they set that standard for themselves first and, in doing so, conditioned us to expect nothing less than spectacular. Do I prefer it when the studio introduces new characters, stories, and worlds over sequels and spin-offs? Sure. Still yet, they could never release another movie I care about (which won’t happen) and would still have done enough for the medium to deserve my eternal appreciation and respect.

Now that I’m finished vouching for a studio that requires zero support from me in order to stay relevant, I can get to the reason we’re all here. In this week’s Top 5 you can find a possible casting breakdown for Star Wars: Episode VII, our Pacific Rim set visit, the excellent first trailer for Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio‘s The Wolf of Wall Street, our Riddick set visit recap, and what may very well be the final appearance that Man of Steel ever makes in this weekly feature (no promises, though). Read on for a brief recap and link to each of the above.

During a group interview on the set of Riddick last year in Montreal, Katee Sackhoff explained the differences between her character Dahl, and Starbuck from Battlestar Galactica:

“There’s a lot of big differences between Starbuck and Dahl.  Starbuck is extremely juvenile and she was very immature and she kind of grew up in that show.  Dahl is very mature, very much a woman.  She’s kind of been taking care of herself for a while and she’s extremely confident.  Starbuck was confident to mask her insecurities, there’s not an insecure bone in Dahl.  She’s by far the toughest, most deadly character I’ve ever played.”

During the rest of the interview, Sackhoff talked about filming the action scenes, being the only woman in the cast, interacting with creatures that’ll be added in later using CG, how she got cast, and so much more.  Hit the jump for what she had to say.

New International Trailer for RIDDICK Starring Vin Diesel

by     Posted 305 days ago

Following the announcement that Riddick would have a panel at this year’s Comic-Con, a new international trailer has been released.  Once again, Riddick (Vin Diesel) is being hunted by mercenaries, and once again, they’re hopelessly outmatched by the anti-hero who can see in the dark.  But the mercs and their bounty are forced to team up when lethal alien monsters attack.  Judging by the trailer, Riddick is the true sequel to Pitch BlackChronicles of Riddick was an attempt to take the character to somewhere he didn’t really fit, and I’m excited to see Richard B. Riddick going back to what he does best.

New Trailer, Poster, and Images for RIDDICK Starring Vin Diesel

Universal Pictures has released a new trailer, images, and a debut poster for writer/director David Twohy’s Riddick.  The Chronicles of Riddick follow-up finds the titular character, played by Vin Diesel, left for dead on a deserted planet filled with predators both alien and human, as bounty hunters once again are out for Riddick’s head.  Clocking in at two and a half minutes long, this trailer shows off much more footage than the first teaser, but there’s not much revealed by way of plot.  In fact, it really looks as though one could comfortably watch Riddick without having seen the first two films in the series and be completely onboard.  With Karl Urban returning, though, one imagines there’s at least a small throughline that connects Riddick with Chronicles.  Though some of the effects are a bit spotty, if you’re a fan of the character and/or the first two films, this trailer promises that Riddick is likely right up your alley.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer, poster, and images.  The film also stars Katee SackhoffDavid BautistaJordi Mollà, Matt Nable, Bokeem Woodbine, Raoul Trujillo, and Nolan Gerard Funk.  Riddick opens in traditional theaters and IMAX on September 6th.

The first trailer for Riddick is now online.  It’s been a long wait for such a short teaser, but it’s got everything you crave in a Riddick movie: Vin Diesel, fearsome creatures, eyeshine in the dark and stone-cold one-liners from the titular anti-hero.  There’s not much in the way of plot (or co-stars) revealed here, but the tone is spot on.

Also starring Karl Urban, Katee Sackhoff and Dave Bautista, writer/director David Twohy’s Riddick opens September 6th.  Hit the jump to watch the first trailer.
