Vikings will live to see another day.  History announced today that it has renewed the drama series for a 10-episode third season, just as the second season is almost halfway finished.  For those unfamiliar, the series stars Travis Fimmel as a young warrior and family man, and now an Earl, with a desire to sail west and explore new kingdoms.  Production on season three will commence this summer in anticipation of a 2015 premiere date.  History EVP and General Manager Dirk Hoogstra had this to say about the renewal:

Possibly one of the most interesting characters to come out of History Channel’s new series Vikings is that of Lagertha, a Shieldmaiden played by the lovely Katheryn Winnick. Even though she is a mother of two, she goes and fights alongside her husband, Ragnar, and frankly might actually be more of a badass then he is.  The cast of Vikings stopped by WonderCon last Saturday to talk about what’s to come for the second half of season; battling in harsh weather conditions, the challenges her character faces in upcoming episodes, and the standing of women in the Viking society.  Hit the jump for the interview.

History Renews New Drama VIKINGS For a Second Season

by     Posted 1 year, 260 days ago

History has a scored a few big ratings hits this season, and though its first scripted drama Vikings has not even finished its inaugural run, the cable network has already renewed it for a 10-episode second season.  According to the network, Vikings has been the #1 new cable series in 2013 in terms of viewership, even in its competitive Sunday night slot, averaging around five million viewers.  I reviewed the series as it first aired and found it compelling, especially in the weeks before another gritty period drama, Game of Thrones, returned — although Vikings certainly has its own merits.  Hit the jump for more.
