key and peele comic con panel recap

Key & Peele is not only one of the funniest shows on the air, but one of the best sketch comedy shows ever produced.  Naturally, I was pretty stoked to get a chance to check out the panel today at Comic-Con where stars Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele were on hand with co-executive producer/director Peter Atencio to debut some new characters and sketches from the upcoming fourth season, discuss their process for writing the show, reveal a little about what’s coming next season, upcoming projects, and a lot more.

New LET’S BE COPS Red-Band Trailer: Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr. Are Posers

20th Century Fox has released a new Let’s Be Cops red-band trailer for director Luke Greenfield’s (The Girl Next Door) upcoming comedy.  The film stars Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr. as two friends who impersonate police officers using rented uniforms and a car purchased on eBay, but in the midst of all their fun they run into trouble with a dangerous Russian mobster.  I still haven’t really seen anything from the pic that makes it stand out as anything other than a pretty standard buddy cop comedy, but Johnson and Wayans Jr. are very funny guys who have terrific chemistry on New Girl, so hopefully that charisma makes the full feature worthwhile.

20th Century Fox has released a new Let’s Be Cops trailer.  Directed by Luke Greenfield’s (The Girl Next Door), the film stars Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr. as two friends who impersonate police officers using rented uniforms and a car purchased on eBay, but in the midst of all their fun they run into trouble with a dangerous Russian mobster.  The film also stars Nina Dobrev, Rob Riggle, James D’Arcy, and Keegan-Michael Key.

Like I said in the intro to my CinemaCon video interview with Johnson and Wayans Jr., while Let’s Be Cops wasn’t on my radar when the movie was filming, everything I’ve seen so far makes me think we might have the sleeper comedy of the summer.  The movie looks really funny and I’m very happy it’s going to be a hard R comedy.  Johnson and Wayans Jr. told me the film is like an 80s movies with crazy comedy, nudity, and a 3rd act filled with action.  Check out the Let’s Be Cops trailer and let me know what you think.  Let’s Be Cops opens August 13th.

KEY AND PEELE: Seasons One & Two Blu-ray Review

key-and-peele-blu-ray-review

Comedy is the most subjective of mediums, and one man’s hilarious genius is another man’s desperate hack. Widely successful comics often water down their material in order to appeal to the broadest possible demographic, while niche comics tailor their message to much that they can’t break out of their established audience. Key and Peele seem to have avoided that fate by finding the right mixture of intelligence, critical thinking and personal passion with their Comedy Central series. The jokes feel like they come from your clever best friend: accessible without being so bland that they fall flat. Their new Blu-ray set – covering the first two seasons – puts some of their best routines on display, which are more than enough to excuse the occasional failure. Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele Will Produce New Line Cinema’s POLICE ACADEMY Reboot

Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele police academy slice

When last we reported on the planned reboot of New Line Cinema’s Police Academy franchise, Scott Zabielski was attached to direct.  He’s no longer in the picture, but Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele are now signed on to produce the film.  The seven-film franchise featured a group of quirky and hilariously unexceptional police recruits tasked with bringing law and order to city streets.  There’s no word just yet as to whether or not they would also star, though their style of humor on the sketch comedy show Key & Peele certainly makes them well-suited.  Hit the jump for more.

20th Century Fox has released the first trailer for director Luke Greenfield’s (The Girl Next Door) comedy Let’s Be Cops.  The film stars Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr. as two friends who impersonate police officers using rented uniforms and a car purchased on eBay, but in the midst of all their fun they run into trouble with a dangerous Russian mobster.  This debut red-band trailer does a nice job of selling the comedy and chemistry of Johnson and Wayans Jr., who have shined on TV with standout roles in New Girl and Happy Endings, respectively (and now both are on New Girl).  The plot is mostly in the background and it remains to be seen whether it’s strong enough to carry the story to feature length, but for now the movie looks to be quite funny.

New Trailer for FX’s FARGO Starring Billy Bob Thornton, Allison Tolman, and Martin Freeman

FX has released a new trailer for their upcoming 10-episode limited series, Fargo.  Based on the classic Coen Brothers‘ film of the same name, the series isn’t a straight adaptation, but rather a story that takes place in the same world and with a similar tone.  The plot centers on “a drifter named Lorne Malvo (Billy Bob Thornton), who arrives in small-town Minnesota and influences the population with his malice and violence, including put-upon insurance salesman Lester Nygaard (Martin Freeman).”  As you can see from the trailer, Lester is reminiscent of William H. Macy‘s Jerry Lundegaard and Allison Tolman‘s cop could be along the lines of Frances McDormand‘s Marge Gunderson.  However it lines up, the dark comedy seems very much alive (the Coens are executive producers), and this is definitely one of my must-see series of the spring.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The series also stars Colin Hanks, Bob Odenkirk, Kate Walsh, Adam Goldberg, Oliver Platt, Glenn Howerton, Jordan Peele, Keegan-Michael Key, Joey King, and Julie Ann EmeryFargo premiers April 15th.

Judd Apatow Developing KEY & PEELE Movie

The very popular sketch duo Key & Peele may be getting the feature film treatment in the near future thanks to the current comedy godfather Judd Apatow.  Former MADtv castmembers Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele first debuted their sketch comedy series Key & Peele on Comedy Central in January 2012, and since then have enjoyed wider success and notoriety as the show has taken off with audiences.  One of its fans appears to be Judd Apatow, as Deadline reports that he will produce an untitled feature comedy vehicle for the duo that will be written by Key and Peele for Universal Pictures.  Hit the jump for more.

New Red-Band Trailer for HELL BABY Starring Rob Corddry, Keegan Michael Key, and Leslie Bibb

A new red-band trailer for the horror parody Hell Baby has been released online.  From writers/directors Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant, the film follows a husband (Rob Corddry) and his pregnant wife (Leslie Bibb) who move into a haunted house in a crappy New Orleans neighborhood, and then need the help of a couple Italian exorcists (Lennon and Garant) when the wife becomes possessed.  The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year to mixed reviews (read Matt’s here), but this trailer shows that the film definitely has at least a few solid laughs.  Unsurprisingly, Keegan Michael Key is the highlight.

Hit the jump to watch the red-band trailer.  The film also stars Riki Lindhome, Paul Scheer, Rob Huebel, Kumail Nanjiani, and Michael Ian Black.  Hell Baby will be available on iTunes on July 25th, and hits theaters on September 6th.

Sundance 2013: HELL BABY Review

If writer-directors Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant had put more effort into their new film Hell Baby, they could have had one of the best parodies of recent horror movies.  The film has some huge laughs as well as some insight into the genre’s weaknesses, but Lennon and Garant’s sketch comedy roots wreck the picture in the worst way.  They’re content to let their scenes run on way too long, they have no idea how to tie their scenes together, and the result feels like we’re in the middle of something that’s being workshopped rather than a finished feature.  Despite a memorable performance from Keegan Michael Key, Hell Baby feels like a gigantic waste of potential that keeps us interested because we’re waiting for the next great joke.
