The star and director of 2005′s The Upside of Anger will re-unite for Black and White, an on-the-nose title for a drama centering on racial issues.  Written and directed by Mike Binder,  Black and White is an indie that will star Kevin Costner as a man left widowed after his wife died in a car crash.  He’s then left alone to raise his bi-racial granddaughter when his own daughter dies during childbirth.  The plot thickens when the child’s paternal grandmother begins to wage a custody battle and raises questions about race and where the child should grow up.  Deadline reports that the indie will start shooting in New Orleans this summer.

Summit Entertainment and OddLot Entertainment announced today that production has begun on director Ivan Reitman’s sports dramedy Draft Day.  The film takes place within the span of one day, the day of the NFL Draft, as Kevin Costner plays a general manger who has the opportunity to save football in Cleveland when he trades for the number one pick.  As the day’s events unfold, “he must quickly decide what he’s willing to sacrifice in pursuit of perfection as the lines between his personal and professional life become blurred on a life-changing day for a few hundred young men with dreams of playing in the NFL.”

Filming is underway in New York, where the production will shoot some scenes at the actual 2013 NFL Draft.  Once that is complete, filming will move to Cleveland.  The ensemble includes Jennifer Garner, Denis Leary, Ellen Burstyn, Frank Langella, Josh Pence, Rosanna Arquette, Timothy Simons and 42 star Chadwick Boseman, and the start-of-production press release notes that Terry Crews and Sean “P. Warner Bros. has released a new trailer for director Zack Snyder‘s Superman film Man of Steel.  There’s a lot to pull apart here in this three-minute trailer, starting with the heroic shots of Russell Crowe who appears to have prescience about his son’s abilities once he gets to Earth.  Then, we see Clark Kent passing through childhood, adolescence and adulthood, all while the expectations of his fathers are heaped upon his broad shoulders.  It’s not all existential as we get the first real hint of action sequences in the film, along with scenes of the menacing Michael Shannon and the tenacious Amy Adams.  And that theme?  There’s quite a bit going on here so be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments!

Last week, some intriguing new images from Man of Steel made their way online from the latest issue of EW.  The magazine quickly asked us to remove the images from our site, but today they’ve been officially released for all to see.  We get nice looks at Michael Shannon’s General Zod, Henry Cavill’s Supes, Amy Adams’ Lois Lane, Laurence Fishburne’s Perry White, and more, including a new image of Antje Traue as the villainess Faora that wasn’t included in that initial batch.

Yesterday, Superman (Henry Cavill) took to the cover of Entertainment Weekly, and now the publication has released seven lo-res images from the superhero’s reboot, Man of Steel.  The article contains new plot details, but I’m trying to stay in the dark on this movie.  Everything I’ve seen so far has pushed me towards doubt (it just looks too dour for Superman), and I want to give the movie a fair shake, so I’ll let the die-hards check out the story.  However, I am willing to look at new images from the movie, and these look alright.  Director Zack Snyder has apparently left his more stylized approach behind to make this Superman movie look relatively normal.  Of course, we’ll have to see it in motion to really get a sense of what he’s going for.

Some new promo images from director Zack Snyder’s highly anticipated upcoming Superman reboot Man of Steel have surfaced online.  It’s tough to tell if the actors are in character or not in these new images, but if they are then this is our first look at Henry Cavill as plain ol’ Clark Kent.  With the summer movie season looming closer, we should be seeing some more official images and posters for the film soon.

New images have been released from the appropriately titled Jack Ryan reboot, Jack Ryan.  Pine stars as the famous Tom Clancy character that was previously portrayed onscreen by Alec Baldwin (The Hunt for Red October), Harrison Ford (Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger), and Ben Affleck (The Sum of All Fears). This time around, Ryan is a Moscow-based financial analyst who faces off against his employer when he discovers a plot to finance a terrorist attack designed to collapse the U.S. economy.  Kenneth Branagh directs and plays the film’s villain, Keira Knightley is on board as Ryan’s fiancée, and Kevin Costner plays a CIA liaison.  Even though Branagh’s character is Russian oligarch and a bit of a throwback to the protagonist’s Cold War origins, the film takes place in the present day.

The Oscars picture is starting to emerge.  Last night, Argo won the Producers Guild Award for Best Picture, and tonight Ben Affleck‘s drama has won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.  With tonight’s win, Argo is slowly moving towards being the first film since Driving Miss Daisy to win Best Picture at the Oscars even though the director didn’t pick up a nomination.  Like Driving Miss Daisy, Argo will have managed the incredible task of directing itself.  The night’s other film actor winners included Daniel Day-Lewis, Jennifer Lawrence, Tommy Lee Jones, and Anne Hathaway.  It will be interesting to see how these will match up with the Oscar winners.  Over on the TV side, Downton Abbey broke Homeland‘s awards-streak by picking up Best Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.

The 2013 Golden Globes have just wrapped up.  I only watched the last hour of the ceremony because the Globes no longer have their awards season power due to voting schedule changes.  Reading tweets and Facebook posts, it seems like it was a fairly entertaining show (keep an eye out for Jodie Foster‘s acceptance speech for her Lifetime Achievement Award).  As for the winners, they were very “Globes” in that they were more populist choices that are unlikely to have much bearing on the Oscars.  Argo may have had a good night at the Globes by winning Best Picture (Drama) and Best Director, but I still think Lincoln is the picture to beat when it comes to the Academy Awards, especially since Ben Affleck was snubbed for the Best Director Oscar nomination.

Back in October, Paramount Pictures decided to put Ivan Reitman‘s Draft Day into turnaround.  The film was set to star Kevin Costner as Buffalo Bills General Manager Sonny Weaver, who has the chance to save his team when he trades for the number one pick in the draft.  However, he’s forced to decide what he’s willing to sacrifice both personally and professionally in order to achieve success.  From the premise, it sounds like Moneyball meets football, which seems like an easy sell since you have a critically acclaimed drama crossed with the most popular sport in America.

The project looked like it was destined for production hell, but then it landed on top of The Black List, and now Lionsgate is after Rajiv Joseph and Scott Rothman‘s spec script.  According to Vulture, Lionsgate is currently in negotiations with Reitman and Costner to get the film going again.  I dig the premise, so hopefully Lionsgate can get the project off the ground.

Warner Bros. has released a new trailer for Zack Snyder‘s Man of Steel starring Henry Cavill as Superman.  Rather than focusing on the action, the trailer tries to sell us on what would happen if Superman really existed on our planet and would people really accept someone with God like powers.  Of course towards the end of the trailer, we get a good look at some of the big action set pieces and Amy Adams as Lois Lane and Michael Shannon as the villain Zod.  But the fact is, every big budget Hollywood movie has action.  Without a strong story and characters you care about, the action means nothing.  Thankfully, everything I’ve seen thus far on the Man of Steel tells me Snyder has crafted a great Superman film that will deliver everything the fans want and more.  It’s easily one of my most anticipated films of 2013.  Hit the jump to watch the new trailer and then be prepared to start counting down the days to June 14.

Warner Bros. has confirmed that director Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel will be released in 2D, 3D and IMAX versions next summer.  We previously reported that Man of Steel would be post-converted to 3D as well as the promise of “An IMAX 3D Experience,” but those reports were retracted when IMAX claimed the announcement was an “inputting error” and that WB was still contemplating a 3D post-conversion.  In the new press release, Snyder was quick to assuage fears of sub-par post-conversion by stating that the film was designed and shot with 3D in mind, but not at the expense of story and character.

Written by David S. Goyer (who was recently interviewed by Steve), Man of Steel stars Henry Cavill, Russell Crowe, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Amy Adams and Michael Shannon.  Look for the film in 2D, 3D and IMAX on June 14th, 2013.  Hit the jump for the full press release.

Just a day after reporting that Tom Cruise was circling the T.S. Nowlin sci-fi spec script, Our Name is Adam, Paramount appears to be in exclusive negotiations for the property.  Sure to fetch a high price tag, the project could likely be another win for the studio and Cruise, who currently collaborate on the Mission: Impossible franchise and the upcoming film, Jack Reacher.  Another recent winner for Paramount was the acquisition of Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street starring Leonardo DiCaprio.  The studio plans to release the film in late 2013 to qualify for the awards season.  But where there are winners, there must be losers.  Hit the jump to read up on the status of Paramount’s Draft Day, starring Kevin Costner and directed by Ivan Reitman. 

Back in August, we learned that McG and Kevin Costner were looking to possibly team up on an untitled action thriller (previously titled Three Days to Kill)produced by Luc Besson (The Fifth Element, Taken).  It appears that things have officially come together, as Variety reports that Costner has closed a deal to star in the film while McG is set to direct.  Besson co-wrote the film with Adi Hasak (From Paris with Love), which centers on a dying secret service agent who retires in order to reconnect with his family.  The Secret Service offers him the chance to use an experimental drug that could save his life in exchange for one last assignment, and Costner finds himself “trying to juggle his family, his mission, and the drug’s hallucinatory side-effects.”

It’s a twist on the familiar “one last job” premise, and while I think Costner’s a fine choice to lead the project, I’m less convinced of McG’s skills as a filmmaker.  The set-up provides for some exciting possibilities, so hopefully we’ll be pleasantly surprised.

The 2012 Primetime Emmy Awards were given out last night, and longtime favorite Mad Men had a pretty rough evening.  Matthew Weiner’s AMC drama was shut out in every category in which it was nominated (Christina Hendricks was robbed), denying the series a record-breaking fifth consecutive Best Drama Series Emmy in favor of Showtime’s excellent freshman series Homeland.  The cable thriller nearly swept the drama series category, even landing Damian Lewis a surprising Best Actor win over perennial favorite Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad) and Mad Men’s way overdue Jon Hamm.  It’s hard to complain, though, as Homeland had a positively stellar first season and star Claire Danes gave a powerhouse performance as a psychologically plagued CIA analyst, for which she was awarded Best Actress.

On the comedy side of things the awards were a tad more predictable, with ABC’s Modern Family pulling off another sweep in the genre. Julia Louis-Dreyfus took home the Best Actress award for her hilarious work on Veep, and Jon Cryer inexplicably won Best Actor in a Comedy for his role in Two and a Half Men despite that show not being funny.  Hit the jump to read the full list of winners.
