DreamWorks Animation has released the first five minutes from How to Train Your Dragon 2 online.  The long-awaited DreamWorks Animation sequel picks up five years after the events of the first film, as Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) and Toothless are exploring new territories while the rest of their friends are enjoying dragon races.  During one of Hiccup and Toothless’ journeys, they discover a secret ice cave, hundreds of new wild dragons, and the mysterious Dragon Rider.  I assume this clip is for one of two groups: 1) People who can’t stand the four-year wait for the sequel any longer, and just need to get another glimpse right now (two clips have already been released); or 2) People who plan on being super late to the movie.

A new How to Train Your Dragon 2 clip has been released online, and it should bring to mind another recent fantasy franchise. This new clip provides a look at the aforementioned dragon races, as the main characters take part in a Quidditch-esque game that involves picking up sheep and dropping them into baskets.  It highlights the film’s great sense of humor, gorgeously colorful animation, and soaring score, making the wait for its release that much harder.

New Trailer and Poster for HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2

DreamWorks Animation has released a new How to Train Your Dragon 2 trailer and poster.  Director Dean Deblois’ animated sequel takes place five years after the first installment, as Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) and Toothless are exploring new territories while the rest of their friends are enjoying dragon races.  During one of Hiccup and Toothless’ journeys, they discover a secret ice cave, hundreds of new wild dragons, and the mysterious Dragon Rider.  This trailer has the blend of humor and drama I was hoping the movie would provide, and I’m surprised and encouraged that they’re leaning more heavily on the emotional side than the comedy even though the jokes are still funny.  The first How to Train Your Dragon set a high bar.  The sequel could very well meet it.

The fourth season premiere of HBO’s massively popular drama series Game of Thrones is just a few short days away, and in anticipation of the event, the network has unveiled a new gallery of images teasing the new season.  These 10 episodes will cover roughly the second half of the third book in George R.R. Martin’s series, A Storm of Swords, and as we can see in these images, many characters will find themselves in precarious situations.  Most notably, this new image gallery gives us a close look at Daenerys’ (Emilia Clarke) dragons, which have grown considerably since we last saw them.

Hit the jump to take a look at the images.  The show also stars Peter Dinklage, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Lena Headey, Charles Dance, Kit Harington, Rose Leslie, Natalie Dormer, Gwendoline Christie, and Jack GleesonGame of Thrones season four premieres on HBO Sunday, April 6th.  Check back here on Collider after the episode to read Allison’s full recap.

HBO has released yet another trailer for the fourth season of Game of Thrones.  Watching this trailer, it’s important to remember that there are still only ten episodes, and we’ve got quite a lot of storylines on our hands.  At some point, we may want to be grateful for some character deaths if only to unburden the plot.  Of course, I say that now and then all the characters I like will probably be slaughtered.  So much for the bright side.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The show stars Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke, Charles Dance, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Maisie Williams, Aiden Turner, Iain Glen, Rose Leslie, Carice Van Houten, Alfie Allen, Diana Rigg, Natalie Dormer, Kit Harington, Sophie Turner, and Isaac Hempstead Wright.  New cast this season include Pedro Pascal, Michiel Huisman, and Indira VarmaGame of Thrones returns on April 6th at 9pm on HBO.

New Posters for GAME OF THRONES Season 4 Remind Us “All Men Must Die”

Like the recent trailer, a batch of new posters for the fourth season of Game of Thrones seems bent on preparing us for an onslaught of characters deaths.  The tagline “All Men Must Die” is translation of “Valar morghulis”, which is the High Valyrian taught to Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) by Jaqen H’ghar (Tom Wlaschiha) in season two.  The previous set of posters focused on the Lanisters, and now the rest of the cast is getting their close-ups.  If you’re like me and haven’t read the books, how many of these poor sods are going to make it to season five.

Hit the jump to check out the posters.  The show also stars Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke, Charles Dance, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Aiden Turner, Iain Glen, Rose Leslie, Carice Van Houten, Alfie Allen, Diana Rigg, Natalie Dormer, Kit Harington, Sophie Turner, and Isaac Hempstead Wright.  New cast this season include Pedro Pascal, Michiel Huisman and Indira Varma. Game of Thrones returns on April 6th at 9pm on HBO.

There’s about to be a True Detective-sized hole in my Sunday night viewing, but thankfully there won’t be too long of a wait for more quality television.  Game of Thrones returns in April, and so HBO is seriously ramping up the marketing.  Today, they’ve released teasers focusing on the Starks, Daenerys (Emilia Clarke), and Tyrion (Peter Dinklage).  There are also character posters for the Lannisters, presumably because they always pay their debts.

Hit the jump to check out the teasers and posters.  The show also stars Lena Headey, Charles Dance, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Alfie Allen, Diana Rigg, Natalie Dormer, Kit Harington, Sophie Turner, Maisie Williams, Isaac Hempstead Wright, Pedro Pascal, Michiel Huisman, and Indira VarmaGame of Thrones returns April 6th at 9pm.

Landing just outside of this week’s Top 5 and earning an opening paragraph mention as a result is the first trailer and poster for writer/editor/director Ti West‘s The Sacrament. Obviously inspired by 1978′s Jonestown Massacre, the film features a team of journalists who attempt to document the story of a seemingly peaceful religious commune only to have the proverbial shit hit the fan in the process. I think West is among the best working directors in terms of creating and maintaining terror as evidenced by both 2009′s The House of the Devil and 2011′s The Innkeepers. Each of those films expertly sustain a sense of dread throughout and if Gene Jones hauntingly daring the visiting journalists to “Take it…” in this first trailer is any indication, The Sacrament looks to be cut from the same stellar mold. While it will be tough to match the psychological horror dealt out by 2011′s cult-centric drama Martha Marcy May Marlene, I’ll be anxiously anticipating West’s latest up until the time it hits VOD on May 1st.

Transitioning to the list section of the feature, this week’s installment highlights the first trailer for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Steve’s set visit coverage for X-Men: Days of Future Past, interviews for and Matt’s review of Paul W.S. Anderson‘s Pompeii, casting news for Fox’s Fantastic Four reboot, and coverage from the floor of Toy Fair 2014 at the Javits Center in NYC. Keep reading for a quick recap and link to each of the above.

POMPEII Review

Until Titanic was released to record-breaking box office and a slew of awards, director James Cameron was known for straight-up action movies.  Titanic is still an action movie; it just happens to have a cheesy love story in the middle, and its epic sweep and central tragedy connected with audiences.  Two lesser directors attempted to repeat this formula, but with far less success.  Michael Bay attempted it in 2001 with Pearl Harbor and now Paul W.S. Anderson, the director behind Mortal Kombat, Alien vs. Predator, and multiple Resident Evil movies, has tried with Pompeii, a movie that not only apes Titanic, but also Gladiator.  Anderson may recognize the formula and have more weapons of destruction at his disposal, but he neither has the skill or the originality to move Pompeii out of the shadow of giants.

Kit-Harington-Pompeii-Game-of-Thrones-season-4-interview

Opening this weekend is director Paul W.S. Anderson’s disaster epic Pompeii.  The film stars Kit Harington (Game of Thrones) as an enslaved Celtic gladiator named Milo who falls in love with a noblewoman (Emily Browning) on the eve of a massive volcanic eruption that destroys Pompeii, an event that also brings him face-to-face with the man (Kiefer Sutherland) who slaughtered his family years earlier.  The film also stars Jared Harris, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Carrie-Anne Moss, Sasha Roiz, Jessica Lucas, and Paz Vega.

At the Los Angeles press day, I landed an exclusive video interview with Kit Harington.   He talked about his reaction to the finished film, the practical sets, if the script changed during production, how he prepared to film 50 fights, the challenging shoot, and Game of Thrones season 4 (which he says is the most expensive one to date).  Hit the jump to watch.

First Clip from POMPEII Pits Kit Harington against Kiefer Sutherland

The first clip from Paul W.S. Anderson’s ancient actioner Pompeii is now online.  While it’s light on volcanic action, this first look does feature quite a bit of gladiatorial fighting.  It looks like stars Kit Harington and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje have teamed up against a veritable army of soldiers within the fighting ring.  We also get a look at such antagonizing spectators as Kiefer Sutherland, Jared Harris and Sasha Roiz.

Also starring Emily Browning, Carrie-Anne Moss, Jessica Lucas, and Paz Vega, Pompeii opens February 21st.  Hit the jump to watch the clip.

New Posters for HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2, NEED FOR SPEED, and POMPEII

Today, we’ve got new posters for How to Train Your Dragon 2, Need for Speed, and Pompeii.  The Dragon poster features siblings Ruffnut (Kristen Wiig), Tuffnut (T.J. Miller), and their two-headed dragon on a poster that clearly doesn’t have enough room for all of them.  Then there’s Need for Speed, which is seriously abusing the blue-orange poster cliché.  Finally, there’s the Pompeii poster where Kit Harington has apparently discovered something even more horrifying than the exploding volcano behind him.  Also, I don’t know if this is a foreign poster or not.  Everything is in English except “Pompeii” is spelled with a “J”.  Go figure.

Hit the jump to check out the posters.  How to Train Your Dragon 2 opens in 3D on June 13th.  Need for Speed opens March 14th.  Pompeii opens in 3D on February 21st.
