First KNIGHT OF CUPS Trailer Reveals Terrence Malick’s Hollywood-Set Drama Starring Christian Bale

by     Posted 4 days ago

If you’re a fan of Terrence Malick, today is a very good day.  Earlier we learned that one of Malick’s films that he shot in 2012, Knight of Cups, is poised to debut at the Berlin Film Festival in February followed by a theatrical release later in 2015, and now the first Knight of Cups trailer has landed online.  The poetic, lyrical nature of Malick is on full display here, but this looks to be a much more hypnotic and chaotic film than his subdued, Oklahoma-set To the WonderChristian Bale leads a stellar cast that includes Cate Blanchett, Natalie Portman, Antonio Banderas, and Brian Dennehy, and the Hollywood-set story marks a pretty major change of location for Malick, whose past two features have followed the lives of people living in the south/Midwest.  And it goes without saying that Emmanuel Lubezki’s cinematography is simply spectacular.  The slot for my most anticipated film of 2015 has now been filled.

Check out the first Knight of Cups trailer after the jump.  The film also stars Isabel Lucas, Imogen Poots, Wes Bentley, Freida Pinto, Teresa Palmer, Armin Mueller-Stahl, and the voice of Ben Kingsley and will be released in theaters sometime next year.

Terrence Malick’s KNIGHT OF CUPS to Premiere at Berlin Film Festival

by     Posted 4 days ago

And just like that, we have a new Terrence Malick film set to debut in 2015.  The notoriously private director shot two films back-to-back in 2012, Knight of Cups and a currently untitled feature that was previously named Lawless, but given the fact that Malick spends years in the editing room, there was no telling when we’d see either of them.  After rumors of a 2014 debut turned out to be false, we now have official confirmation on when at least one of them will be released, as the Berlin Film Festival announced its initial lineup today and Knight of Cups is on the roster.  A number of actors shot roles for the film, but the Berlin description confirms that at least Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, and Natalie Portman made the final cut.  More on Knight of Cups after the jump.

Antonio Banderas Talks THE EXPENDABLES 3, the Changes He Made to His Character, PUSS IN BOOTS 2, Working with Terrence Malick, and More

by     Posted 226 days ago

Last year, when The Expendables 3 was filming in Bulgaria, I got to visit the set with a few other reporters.  Usually during a break in filming I’ll do interviews with the cast.  But due to how much was going on that day, interviews were tough to come by.  Thankfully, Lionsgate recently got me on the phone with Antonio Banderas for an exclusive interview.  He talked about how he got involved in the project, not wanting to play a villain, his character’s backstory, the weapons, if it was a competitive set, director Patrick Hughes, and more.  He also talked about working with Terrence Malick and the director’s unique way of working, Puss in Boots 2, and if he’ll be directing again.  Hit the jump for what he had to say.

Antonio Banderas Talks Terrence Malick’s Process; Says He Thinks He Made the Cut and Reveals All the Footage Edited Together Could Be a Week Long

by     Posted 246 days ago

Terrence Malick might just be the most elusive filmmaker working today.  He hasn’t given a proper interview in years, and hasn’t been officially photographed in even longer.  Despite all of this, though, he’s become impossibly prolific.  There was a 20-year gap between Days of Heaven and The Thin Red Line, but in the past decade he has shot five full features.  After completing production on 2012’s To the Wonder, Malick began back-to-back shoots on two upcoming films—one untitled, and one called Knight of Cups.  A massive amount of actors shot scenes for both movies, but since Malick’s process involves filming days of footage and then shaping the film in the editing room, there’s no telling which actors will make the final cut.

One such actor who worked on Malick’s Knight of Cups is Antonio Banderas, and when we recently spoke with Banderas in anticipation of the action sequel The Expendables 3, he provided some fascinating insight into Malick’s filming process, going on to reveal that he thinks he’s made the final cut of Knight of Cups.  Hit the jump to read on.

Joel Kinnaman Talks ROBOCOP, How the Film has a Strong Social & Political Point of View, Working for Terrence Malick on KNIGHT OF CUPS, and More

by     Posted 311 days ago

Opening this week in theaters and IMAX is director Jose Padilha’s new take on RoboCop.  For those unfamiliar with the film, it takes place in the near future where a company called OmniCorp has pushed drone technology to new levels, and they now want to mix the technology with a human operator.  When police officer Alex Murphy (Kinnaman) is gravely injured, OmniCorp takes the opportunity to use him as their prototype cyborg police officer.   The experiment on Murphy is meant to be the first of many RoboCops the company hopes to put in every U.S. city.  The film also stars Abbie Cornish, Jackie Earle HaleyMichael K. WilliamsJennifer EhleJay BaruchelMarianne Jean-Baptiste, and Samuel L. Jackson.

At the recent Los Angeles press day, I landed an exclusive video interview with Kinnaman.  He talked about how the film has a strong social and political point of view, the challenge of wearing the Robocop suit, if he was aware of all the set photos being taken while they were filming, what it was like working for Terrence Malick on Knight of Cups (and how he only filmed for one day but had a 17 page monologue), and more.  Hit the jump to watch.

Christian Bale Says He’ll Probably Be Cut from One of Terrence Malick’s Upcoming Films

by     Posted 1 year, 17 days ago

Christian Bale is having a pretty swell 2013 as the star of two fairly prestigious films, Out of the Furnace and American Hustle, but he also has a pair of highly anticipated Terrence Malick films on the horizon—or so we thought.  In late 2011 and throughout 2012, the newly prolific Malick began production on two new films that were to be shot back-to-back, one focusing on the music industry (previously titled Lawless) and another taking place in Hollywood (Knight of Cups).  Bale is the star of the latter and also shot scenes for the music film, but now the actor has revealed that he’ll probably be cut out of the untitled picture.  Hit the jump for more, including a status update for both films.

Nick Offerman Talks WE’RE THE MILLERS, Working with Terrence Malick, Filming in London for PARKS AND RECREATION, Cast Departures, and More

by     Posted 1 year, 134 days ago

Opening this week is director Rawson Marshall Thurber’s (Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story) R-rated comedy We’re the Millers.  The film centers on a single, small-time pot dealer (Jason Sudeikis) who ends up in debt to his supplier (Ed Helms).  In order to bring the next shipment of drugs up from Mexico, he puts together a fake family comprised of his stripper neighbor (Jennifer Aniston), an eager teen (Will Poulter) and a streetwise punk (Emma Roberts).  The supporting cast also includes the hilarious Nick Offerman and Kathryn Hahn.  For more on the film, watch seven clips or read Matt’s review.

The other day I landed a phone interview with Nick Offerman.  Besides making me laugh a number of times, he also talked about what the last year has been like for him, making We’re the Millers, working with the great cast, how often he laughs during takes, the future of Parks and Recreation, filming the upcoming season premiere in London and how the locals treated Ron Swanson.  In addition, Offerman talked about working with Terrence Malick on Knight of Cups, who he plays, and the way Malick filmed his scenes.  Finally, he talked about his work on The Lego Movie and Lake Bell‘s In a World.  Hit the jump to either read or listen to what he had to say.

First Official Image from Terrence Malick’s KNIGHT OF CUPS Starring Christian Bale and Natalie Portman

by     Posted 1 year, 218 days ago

We’ve seen plenty of set photos from Terrence Malick‘s Knight of Cups, but now an official image has been released.  The image is a nice shot of a scene we previously saw in set photos with Christian Bale and Natalie Portman frolicking on a beach.  If you focus, you can almost see the lyrical cinematography and whispered narration.  There are few details on Knight of Cups other than it’s about the Los Angeles movie business and features half of Hollywood.  In addition to Bale and Portman, the cast includes Cate Blanchett, Isabel Lucas, Antonio Banderas, Wes Bentley, Imogen Poots, Freida Pinto, Teresa Palmer, Ryan O’Neal, Jason Clarke, Joel Kinnaman, and Shea Whigham (hat tip to The Playlist for keeping count).  However, these are actors who have only been seen in set photos; we don’t know who will make the final cut.

We also don’t know when Malick will have that final cut.  He’s editing multiple movies, and he has no problem spending years in the editing room.  As The Playlist reminds us, it took 18 months between the first photo of To the Wonder to the film’s release.  Footage from Knight of Cups is currently being shown to possible distributors at Cannes this week.  Hit the jump to check out the image.

Freida Pinto Talks DAY OF THE FALCON, Acting Alongside Antonio Banderas and Tahar Rahim, Her Work on Terrence Malick’s KNIGHT OF CUPS, and More

by     Posted 1 year, 294 days ago

From acclaimed director Jean-Jacques Annaud, Day of the Falcon is an epic story of honor, greed, betrayal and love, set in early 20th century Arabia.  After years of bloody conflict, the leaders of two rivals kingdoms – Nesib, Emir of Hobeika (Antonio Banderas) and Amar, Sultan of Salmaah (Mark Strong) – reluctantly agree to end the fighting, only to have that war reignite when oil is discovered between their territories.  Now it is up to their children, Princess Leyla (Freida Pinto) and Auda (Tahar Rahim), who are young lovers that married in hopes of bringing the families together, to find a way to end the violence and bring peace to the land.

During this recent exclusive interview with Collider, actress Freida Pinto talked about how she came to be a part of Day of the Falcon, the more than 20-year journey it took to bring the story to the big screen, what it means to her to be a part of such a special cinematic experience, her process for understanding her character, the incredible wardrobe and sets, and working with co-stars Antonio Banderas and Tahar Rahim.  She also talked about her upcoming role in Desert Dancer, based on the inspirational true story of an Iranian dancer who risked his life for his dream despite a nationwide dancing ban, and the experience of working with director Terrence Malick on Knight of Cups.  Check out what she had to say after the jump.

Teresa Palmer Talks WARM BODIES, Having John Malkovich Play Her Dad, Terrence Malick’s KNIGHT OF CUPS, and More

by     Posted 1 year, 330 days ago

Warm Bodies, a loose adaptation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, substitutes the Capulet’s Juliet for Julie – a gun toting survivor in a post-apocalyptic wasteland – and Romeo for an undead flesh-eating zombie. Teresa Palmer (I Am Number Four) stars as the Juliet substitute, whose ‘love’ slowly brings to life the undead ‘R’ (Nick Hoult). It’s hard to be surprised at such a development because if anyone can bring to life the undead, it would most certainly be someone as fetching as Teresa Palmer.

In the following interview with Palmer, she discusses recreating the famous ‘balcony sequence’ from the play albeit in a different context, having John Malkovich play her disapproving father and working opposite Terrence Malick in the upcoming Knight of Cups. For the full interview, hit the jump.

Teresa Palmer Talks Terrence Malick’s KNIGHT OF CUPS

by     Posted 1 year, 340 days ago

The prospect of working with Terrence Malick is too great an opportunity for any actor to pass up.  Malick is one of the greats – Badlands, Days of Heaven: classics in their own right.  Add to the fact – the elusive, press shy filmmaker notoriously takes quite awhile between films (although his output as of late puts to doubt such a deliberate reputation).  Thus not only is working with Malick a chance to star in one of greatest living director’s films but more so who knows when/if the guy will make another one… The ‘catch’ however: Malick is a fickle editor and prone to cutting his actors out from his films (see: Adrien Brody in The Thin Red Line, Sean Penn in Tree of Life).  You may act in a Malick flick but who knows if you’ll even end up in the finished cut?  At the recent press junket for Warm Bodies, Teresa Palmer discussed working with Malick on the recently wrapped Knight of Cups and addressed whether she fears her role will end up on the cutting room floor.  Hit the jump to watch.

Terrence Malick Will Edit His Upcoming Films Simultaneously; KNIGHT OF CUPS Is about the Movie Biz; THE VOYAGE OF TIME Still a Ways Off

by     Posted 2 years, 105 days ago

Terrence Malick doesn’t talk about his movies.  He films them and then he lets others do the interviews.  His latest picture, To the Wonder, is making the festival rounds, and producers Sarah Green and Nicolas Gonda recently spoke about the director’s upcoming projects, Knight of Cups and an untitled music scene picture formerly titled “Lawless” (Malick graciously gave up the title to John Hillcoat‘s new movie).  With regards to Knight of Cups, the movie, which stars Christian Bale, recently wrapped production and is about the Los Angeles movie business.  The subject matter explains why every week there seems to be a new name attached to the project; they’re probably just small roles or cameos.

Hit the jump for more on Knight of Cups, the untitled music scene project, Green Blade Rising, and the ambitious documentary The Voyage of Time.

Kat Dennings Returns for THOR: THE DARK WORLD, Joel Kinnaman Joins Terrence Malick’s KNIGHT OF CUPS, Olivia Williams Signs for TEN

by     Posted 2 years, 119 days ago

We’ve got a few exciting casting stories to share this evening.  First up, though many believed her character would be left out of the sequel, Deadline reports that Kat Dennings is indeed returning for Thor: The Dark World.  Details are thin, but apparently her role of Darcy Lewis has been expanded for the follow-up opposite Natalie Portman and Chris Hemsworth.  I thought Dennings’ comic relief was spot-on in Thor, so this comes as welcome news for the follow-up.  Production is set to begin imminently with director Alan Taylor (Game of Thrones) at the helm, Christopher Eccelston as the new baddie, and Tom Hiddleston returning as that pesky Loki.

Hit the jump for casting news concerning Terrence Malick’s upcoming drama Knight of Cups and the Arnold Schwarzenegger thriller Ten.

Freida Pinto and Wes Bentley Spotted in New Set Photos from Terrence Malick’s KNIGHT OF CUPS

by     Posted 2 years, 174 days ago

Filming is currently underway on Terrence Malick‘s Knight of Cups, although the set photos we’ve seen indicate that a better title might be Everybody Loves Christian Bale.  We’ve seen the actor frolicking on the beach with Natalie Portman, giving piggyback rides to Imogen Poots, and now he back to beach-frolicking, but this time it’s with Freida Pinto.  Plot details are being kept under wraps, although the title refers to a tarot card that, when placed upright, represents [per Wikipedia], “change and new excitements, particularly of a romantic nature. It can mean invitations, opportunities, and offers.”  But if the card is reversed, it means “unreliability and recklessness. It indicates fraud, false promises and trickery. It represents a person who has trouble discerning when and where the truth ends and lies begin.”  Sounds like a good premise for a character drama.

Hit the jump to check out the set photos, some of which feature Bale and Wes Bentley, but no frolicking.  The film also stars Cate Blanchett and Isabel Lucas.

Set Photos Reveal Imogen Poots Joins Christian Bale in Terrence Malick’s KNIGHT OF CUPS

by     Posted 2 years, 189 days ago

Director Terrence Malick is currently in production on his follow-up to the yet-to-be-released follow-up to last year’s The Tree of Life, and some set photos have revealed a new addition to the cast.  While we wait for a release announcement regarding Malick’s Ben Affleck-fronted romantic drama To the Wonder, the director is in the midst of filming Knight of Cups, one of two films he plans to shoot this year (the other is currently untitled, but was previously called Lawless).

Plot details for Knight of Cups are basically non-existent, but we know that Christian Bale stars alongside Natalie Portman, Cate Blanchett and possibly Isabel Lucas.  We recently saw set photos of Bale and Portman horsing around on the beach, but new shots show Bale filming scenes with a punked-up Imogen Poots (Fright Night, Jane Eyre).  Hit the jump for more, including set photos and a humorous video of Malick caught on TMZ. [Update: We've removed the unofficial images and video.]
