Weekend Box Office: NINJA TURTLES Rule for Second Week; EXPENDABLES 3 Overtaken by LET’S BE COPS

The top two spots on the box office chart remained unchanged for a second weekend, as audiences favored Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Guardians of the Galaxy over a handful of new releases.  But in something of a surprise, the strongest of those new films turned out to be Let’s Be Cops.  The R-rated comedy has moved ahead of The Expendables 3 since Friday, which might say more about the weakness of the latter rather than the strength of the former.

 Title Weekend Total
1.  Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles $28,400,000 $117.6
2.  Guardians of the Galaxy $24,735,000 $222.2
3.  Let’s Be Cops $17,700,000 $26.1
4.  The Expendables 3 $16,200,000 $16.2
5.  The Giver $12,760,000 $12.7
6.  Into the Storm $7,720,000 $31.3
7.  The Hundred-Foot Journey $7,109,000 $23.6
8.  Lucy $5,317,000 $107.5
9.  Step Up All In $2,700,000 $11.8
10.  Boyhood $2,150,000 $13.8

Friday Box Office: NINJA TURTLES Leads; EXPENDABLES 3 Bleeds

teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles-box-office-2nd-weekend

It looks like it’s going to be a tough weekend for new titles at the box office.  All three major releases came in lower than projected on Friday, which allowed holdovers Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Guardians of the Galaxy to hold on to their first and second place rankings.  The Expendables 3, the most notable newbie, earned an estimated $6.9 million on its first day in theatres.  That suggests an opening weekend of about $16 million, or less than half what the first Expendables earned from its debut back in August 2010.  Fox’s Let’s Be Cops came in fourth on Friday with $5.6 million.  The R-rated comedy opened early, on Wednesday, with $5.2 million and should end its first weekend with just under $15 million.  The Giver earned an estimated $4.7 million from 3,003 locations yesterday.  The adaptation of Lois Lowry’s novel, The Giver should bring in $13 million in its first three days.  That tops recent young adult adaptations including Beautiful Creatures and The Mortal Instruments, but that’s not saying much.

Details and Friday’s top five chart after the jump.

Jake Johnson, Damon Wayans Jr. and Rob Riggle Talk LET’S BE COPS, Going on Ride-Alongs, NEW GIRL, and JURASSIC WORLD

Let’s Be Cops marks director Luke Greenfield’s (The Girl Next Door) return to hard R-rated comedy after the mellower PG-13 affair Something Borrowed.  The film stars Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr. as two friends who impersonate police officers using rented uniforms and a car purchased on eBay, but in the midst of all their fun they run into trouble with a dangerous Russian mobster.  Rob Riggle joins them in their adventures as a straight-laced real cop who can’t quite make heads or tails of the unlikely duo’s partnership

I recently had the chance to sit down with the trio to discuss the film and the somewhat surprising revelation that Riggle essentially plays the straight man in this movie.  We also talked about Johnson and Wayans’ New Girl chemistry and Johnson’s appearance in the upcoming Jurassic World.  Hit the jump for the Let’s Be Cops interview (be sure to check out the red-band trailer as well).  The film also stars Nina DobrevJames D’Arcy, and Keegan-Michael Key.  20th Century Fox releases it wide this Wednesday, August 13th.

Comic-Con: Damon Wayans Jr. Talks LET’S BE COPS, Improvising, Scary Ride-Along Research, NEW GIRL, and More

damon-wayans-jr-lets-be-cops-interview

The action comedy Let’s Be Cops is the ultimate buddy cop movies, except for the fact that they’re not actually cops.  When two struggling pals (Jake Johnson, Damon Wayans Jr.) dress as police officers for a costume party, they get tangled up in real-life crime and become neighborhood sensations.

While at Comic-Con for a presentation in Hall H, actor Damon Wayans Jr. spoke to press at a conference, in which he talked about how much fun the film was to make, that probably 70% of the movie is improvised, how the fact that everything they’re doing is actually illegal sets it apart from other buddy comedies, working with Jake Johnson on this vs. New Girl, going on a scary ride-along for research, how every scene went off the rails but still made it into the film, the great message of the film, and how unlikely it is that there will be any more Happy Endings.  Check out what he had to say after the jump.

LET’S BE COPS Comic-Con Panel Recap Featuring Rob Riggle, Keegan Michael Key, Nina Dobrev, and Damon Wayans Jr.

I had steered clear of Let’s Be Cops partially because I wasn’t that interested in the premise—a couple of guys impersonate cops and get into comic hijinks—but I was interested enough to where I didn’t want to spoil the jokes.  It was part of a 20th Century Fox’s Comic-Con presentation, so I couldn’t avoid it any longer, but now they’ve piqued my interest.

New LET’S BE COPS Red-Band Trailer: Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr. Are Posers

20th Century Fox has released a new Let’s Be Cops red-band trailer for director Luke Greenfield’s (The Girl Next Door) upcoming comedy.  The film stars Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr. as two friends who impersonate police officers using rented uniforms and a car purchased on eBay, but in the midst of all their fun they run into trouble with a dangerous Russian mobster.  I still haven’t really seen anything from the pic that makes it stand out as anything other than a pretty standard buddy cop comedy, but Johnson and Wayans Jr. are very funny guys who have terrific chemistry on New Girl, so hopefully that charisma makes the full feature worthwhile.

20th Century Fox has released a new Let’s Be Cops trailer.  Directed by Luke Greenfield’s (The Girl Next Door), the film stars Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr. as two friends who impersonate police officers using rented uniforms and a car purchased on eBay, but in the midst of all their fun they run into trouble with a dangerous Russian mobster.  The film also stars Nina Dobrev, Rob Riggle, James D’Arcy, and Keegan-Michael Key.

Like I said in the intro to my CinemaCon video interview with Johnson and Wayans Jr., while Let’s Be Cops wasn’t on my radar when the movie was filming, everything I’ve seen so far makes me think we might have the sleeper comedy of the summer.  The movie looks really funny and I’m very happy it’s going to be a hard R comedy.  Johnson and Wayans Jr. told me the film is like an 80s movies with crazy comedy, nudity, and a 3rd act filled with action.  Check out the Let’s Be Cops trailer and let me know what you think.  Let’s Be Cops opens August 13th.

I’ll admit it: director Luke Greenfield’s Let’s Be Cops just wasn’t on my radar.  While I’m a fan of Greenfield’s The Girl Next Door, I wasn’t sure what to expect with his new comedy starring  Damon Wayans Jr. and Jake Johnson.  However, after watching the great-looking red band trailer at CinemaCon, I think we might have an early contender for box office surprise of the summer.  If you haven’t heard of the film, Let’s Be Cops stars Johnson and Wayans Jr. as two friends who impersonate police officers using rented uniforms and a car purchased on eBay, but in the midst of all their fun they run into trouble with a dangerous Russian mobster.  The film also stars Nina DobrevRob RiggleJames D’Arcy, and Keegan-Michael Key and it opens August 13th.

Shortly after presenting the trailer at CinemaCon, I landed an exclusive video interview with Johnson and Wayans Jr.  They talked about how the project came together, how much was improvised, the test screenings, how it’s a hard R-rated comedy with nudity (they say it’s like the 80s movies where it’s a big comedy, then it turns and the action happens), deleted scenes, working with Greenfield, the promotional tour for the film, and more.  In addition, Wayans Jr. talked about his upcoming standup tour and Johnson discussed about his small role in Jurassic World and how he’s about to start filming director Joe Swanberg’s next film Digging for Fire, which starts filming soon and will also star Sam Rockwell, Rosemarie DeWitt, and Brie Larson.  Hit the jump to watch.

20th Century Fox has released the first trailer for director Luke Greenfield’s (The Girl Next Door) comedy Let’s Be Cops.  The film stars Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr. as two friends who impersonate police officers using rented uniforms and a car purchased on eBay, but in the midst of all their fun they run into trouble with a dangerous Russian mobster.  This debut red-band trailer does a nice job of selling the comedy and chemistry of Johnson and Wayans Jr., who have shined on TV with standout roles in New Girl and Happy Endings, respectively (and now both are on New Girl).  The plot is mostly in the background and it remains to be seen whether it’s strong enough to carry the story to feature length, but for now the movie looks to be quite funny.

Jake Johnson Talks DRINKING BUDDIES, Drinking Real Beer During the Shoot, Working with Olivia Wilde and Growing a Beard, Plus NEW GIRL & LET’S BE COPS

Directed by Joe Swanberg, Drinking Buddies tells the story of Kate (Olivia Wilde) and Luke (Jake Johnson), who work together at a craft brewery. They have one of those friendships that feels like it could be something more, and that should make each of their significant others (played by Ron Livingston and Anna Kendrick) uncomfortable.

At the film’s press day, actor Jake Johnson spoke to Collider for this exclusive interview about why he wanted to do Drinking Buddies, getting to drink real beer throughout the shoot, what it was like to work with his co-star Olivia Wilde, and how much he loved the beard he grew for the role.  He also talked about why he was all for Jess (Zooey Deschanel) and Nick (Johnson) getting together on the Fox comedy series New Girl (returning on September 17th), how much fun it was to reunite with Damon Wayans, Jr. (who did the New Girl pilot before being recast) for the action-comedy Let’s Be Cops, the crazy injury he got while shooting a stunt, and the projects that he and his producing partner Max Winkler are looking to do with their company, Walcott.  Check out what he had to say after the jump.
