Though James Cameron’s been busy searching the seas lately, he’ll soon be turning his attention (we think) to the long-promised Avatar sequels. He will be directing Avatar 2 and 3 back-to-back, but it appears that he’s already selected his post-Avatar project. It was announced today that Lightstorm Entertainment has acquired the rights to Taylor Stevens’ 2011 novel The Informationist for Cameron to direct and produce, with Lightstorm partner Jon Landau also producing.

The story centers on an information specialist who is hired by a Texas oil billionaire to find his daughter who vanished in Africa four years ago. The specialist finds herself “back in the lands of her childhood,” where she must come face-to-face with the past that she’s tried to forget. Landau describes the character as "a mix between Lisbeth Salander and Jason Bourne." Hit the jump for more.

The press release notes that Cameron will direct The Informationist for 20th Century Fox after he completes work on the second and third Avatar sequels. Given that those are two ginormous, effects-heavy films, I wouldn’t expect him to be available until 2016 or so at the earliest. Producers have now turned their attention to putting a writer on the project, which looks to be the first in a franchise.

This contradicts earlier claims by Cameron that he wasn’t interested in developing anything besides Avatar movies, and Landau recently said that Cameron would be following the Avatar sequels with his long-awaited adaptation of Yukito Kishiro’s manga Battle Angel Alita. Though I have no doubt that ...

Did you ever wonder what it would be like form a lifelong telepathic bond with a flying creature only to ditch it for a bigger and more powerful flying creature? Now you can! Variety reports that Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Worldwide will create themed lands based on James Cameron's Avatar. The first theme land will be built at Walt Disney World's Animal Kingdom park in Orlando, Florida. Cameron, Jon Landau and their Lightstorm Entertainment group will serve as creative consultants on the projects and will work with Disney's "Imagineers" to oversee the design and development of the different theme lands. I look forward to "Cramped Trailer with Giant Tanning Beds"-Land.

Construction on the theme lands is scheduled to begin in 2013. As Cameron preps for two Avatar sequels (set for Christmas 2014 and 2015), Imagineers will use the entire trilogy to create the various theme lands. No word yet if one of the parks will offer full-body painting or if the gift shops will sell sex ponytails.

James Cameron has made the biggest blockbuster movie of all time and, with two sequels already lined up, will continue to ride on its success for a long time. But what he has lined up next is better than the coolest memorabilia: Avatar: The Exhibition.is due to open on June 4, 2011 at Seattle's Science Fiction Museum.

Organized by Experience Music Project|Science Fiction Museum (EMP|SFM) in association with 20th Century Fox and director James Cameron's production company Lightstorm Entertainment, the show will bring the imaginative world of Pandora to life. More details after the jump.

Sketches, artifacts, handmade models of the Na’vi characters, costumes and the AMP (Armored Mobility Platform) suit used in the combat scenes in the epic sci-fi film are among the many items that will go on display. Visitors will also have fun pretending they’re James Cameron, Sam Worthington or Zoe Saldana through the many interactive installations that feature 3D technology and motion capture.

James Cameron wants it to be an enlightening experience and explains how it’s an explorative ride through Pandora’s creation and culture and its groundbreaking technology:
“The exhibition is going to be a unique opportunity for people to learn more not only about how the film was made, but also experience Pandora in a much deeper way. Fans will be able to see in-person the workmanship behind the film, whether it’s how scenes are captured; or how a Na’vi costume was built first as a real world garment then produced digitally. It’ll create a tactical reality that’ll be ...
