Warner Bros. has provided us with seven clips from director Rawson Marshall Thurber’s (Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story) upcoming comedy We’re the Millers.  The film centers on a single, small-time pot dealer (Jason Sudeikis) who ends up in debt to his supplier (Ed Helms).  In order to bring the next shipment of drugs up from Mexico, he puts together a fake family from his stripper neighbor (Jennifer Aniston), an eager teen (Will Poulter) and a streetwise punk (Emma Roberts).  The supporting cast also includes the reliably hilarious Nick Offerman and Kathryn Hahn, and promises plenty of R-rated escapades from the titular Miller family.

First Teaser Trailer and Poster for DreamWorks Animation’s TURBO Featuring the Voice of Ryan Reynolds

The first teaser trailer and poster for DreamWorks Animation’s upcoming racing movie Turbo have been released.  The story centers on a snail who, after miraculously attaining the power of super-speed, decides to fulfill his dream of racing in the Indy 500.  I got a kick out of the fact that The Chromatics’ “Tick of the Clock,” which was memorably used in last year’s decidedly violent Drive, opens this trailer, followed by another appropriately titled song from Cake.  This is very much a teaser trailer so we don’t see much by way of plot, but the brief bit of racing sequences look pretty impressive and Ryan Reynolds does a fine job with the snail’s comedy.

You’ll see a little bit more of Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Expendables 2 than you did in the first film, but once The Last Stand rolls in next January, the whole screen belongs to the former Governor.  We previously brought you the first image from the film, but now we’re happy to share an official synopsis and poster.  The actioner from director Ji-woon Kim stars Schwarzenegger as the aging sheriff of a border town, which happens to be the last hope of keeping a drug cartel leader from fleeing the country.  The Last Stand, also starring Johnny Knoxville, Forest Whitaker, Eduardo Noriega, Rodrigo Santoro, Jaimie Alexander, Peter Stormare, Genesis Rodriguez and Zach Gilford, opens January 18th.  Hit the jump for the official synopsis and poster.

DreamWorks Animation has assembled its ginormous ensemble voice cast for the snail-centered film Turbo. Ryan Reynolds is already onboard to voice the protagonist, an ordinary garden snail who obtains extraordinary speed through a freak accident and sets out to race in the Indianapolis 500. Now Heat Vision reports that (deep breath) Paul Giamatti, Samuel L. Jackson, Bill Hader, Michael Pena, Luis Guzmán, Richard Jenkins, Ken Jeong, Michelle Rodriguez, Maya Rudolph, Ben Schwartz, Kurtwood Smith, and Snoop Dogg are set to join the cast. David Soren is directing from a script he co-wrote with Robert Siegel (The Wrestler) and Darren Lemke (Shrek Forever After).

I love the voice cast here but I’m not wild about the premise. Pixar already tried to do a movie set in the professional racing world twice to less than stellar results, and this new teaser image doesn’t exactly alleviate any of my concerns. It should be said that it’s still early in the animation process and this image doesn’t exactly reflect the finished film, but I certainly don’t think it’s a great start. New Trailer for JOURNEY 2: THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND

by     Posted 2 years, 236 days ago

A new trailer for Journey 2: The Mysterious Island has gone online. The film is a follow-up to Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D sans Brendan Fraser’s zany antics. This new trailer isn’t incredibly different from the first trailer (except for the music), and the visual effects still look make the film look like Spy Kids: Dinosaurs! What this new trailer does have is Dwayne Johnson riding a giant bee. The trailer is preceded by an uncomfortable intro by Johnson and star Josh Hutcherson that’s saved by the duo’s charm and some pec flexing by the former.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer. The film also stars Michael Caine, Luis Guzman, and Vanessa Hudgens. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island opens in 3D February 10th.

Apparently New Line Cinema is pleased with the team behind the scenes of Journey 2: The Mysterious Island because they’ve decided to keep the same group on board for a potential third installment. If plans for Journey 3 move ahead, director Brad Peyton will carry over, along with writers Brian Gunn, Mark Gunn and Richard Outten, and producers Beau Flynn, Charlotte Huggins and Tripp Vincent. This bodes well for the sequel (which releases on February 10th) since we can assume it tested well over the weekend. The film, based on Jules Verne’s “Mysterious Island” follows Sean Anderson (Josh Hutcherson) as he searches for his missing grandfather (Michael Caine) on an island crawling with dangerous wildlife. New Character Posters for JOURNEY 2: THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND

Previously, we brought you the first trailer for Brad Peyton’s Journey 2: The Mysterious Island and a behind-the-scenes featurette soon followed. They both showed off the beautiful scenery and creature effects of the sequel to Journey to the Center of the Earth, starring Brendan Fraser. Now we have some new character posters for you that showcase, not only the human stars, but other inhabitants of the island as well.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island features the return of Josh Hutcherson as Sean Anderson, who is accompanied by his new stepfather (Dwayne Johnson) as they head off in search of Sean’s missing grandfather (Michael Caine). To get to “Mysterious Island,” the duo will need the helicopter pilot, Gabato (Luis Guzman) and his daughter, Kailani (Vanessa Hudgens) to help guide them.  Hit the jump to check out the posters for each of these characters.

New Featurette for JOURNEY 2: THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND

by     Posted 2 years, 307 days ago

Not long after the first trailer for Journey 2: The Mysterious Island hit the web, Warner Bros. has released a new featurette for the sequel to Journey to the Center of the Earth. Though Brendan Fraser will not be returning, Josh Hutcherson is, along with new cast members Dwayne Johnson, Luis Guzman, Vanessa Hudgens and Michael Caine. This featurette highlights some blurbs from the cast, including Johnson giving us a rule for the island (“That which is small becomes large, that which is large becomes small.”), Caine’s thoughts on 3D and Hudgens revealing the use of the Jules Verne submarine, the Nautilus. New Set Photos from GANGSTER SQUAD and Arnold Schwarzenegger‘s Comeback THE LAST STAND

by     Posted 2 years, 320 days ago

New set photos have gone online for the 1940s crime drama Gangster Squad, and for Arnold Schwarzenegger‘s comeback film The Last Stand.  Back in September, we saw Gangster Squad set photos of co-stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone enjoying a lovely day in the park.  The new set photos show Stone and co-star Sean Penn sharing a scene, and Stone looks particularly glamorous.  I’m a big fan of the setting, and the costumes look terrific.

And some costumes look a little stranger.  The first set photo from Kim Ji-Woon‘s The Last Stand shows Schwarzenegger along with co-stars Luis Guzman, Johnny Knoxville, and Jaimie Alexander.  I’m not sure why Alexander and Schwarzenegger are holding tommy guns if the film is set in the present day, but I’m even more confused by Knoxville’s outfit.  It looks like a modified version of Kang-ho Song’s costume from Ji-Woon’s The Good, the Bad, the Weird.  While I work out my bafflement, hit the jump to check out the set photos.  Gangster Squad opens October 19, 2012.  The Last Stand opens January 18, 2013.

Forest Whitaker and Johnny Knoxville Join Arnold Schwarzenegger in THE LAST STAND

Filming has begun on Arnold Schwarzenegger’s comeback film The Last Stand and the movie has added two more actors to its cast.  Oscar-winner Forest Whitaker and masochist Johnny Knoxville have signed on to Kim Jee-Woon’s crime drama.  Schwarzenegger will play sheriff of a sleepy border town who serves as the last line of defense against a drug cartel leader (Eduardo Noriega) headed for the Mexican border.  Harry Dean Stanton, Rodrigo Santoro, and Luis Guzman have also been announced to co-star.

There’s currently no word on who any of the supporting actors other than Noriega will play.  Whitaker recently signed on to star in the voodoo thriller Vipka, and Knoxville will co-star with Patton Oswalt in an untitled comedy from Todd Rohal.   The Last Stand also stars Harry Dean Stanton, Rodrigo Santoro, Luis Guzman, Zach Gilford, and Jaimie Alexander.  Hit the jump for the press release, which includes the full synopsis.

ARTHUR Blu-ray Review

by     Posted 3 years, 77 days ago

With the remake business, you’re already (at least usually) against a brick wall. What’s remade aren’t usually flawed films, but movies that are regarded well enough to be liked, but aren’t classics (those films are ripped off wholesale). And so there’s a remake of the 1981 Dudley Moore film Arthur thirty years later starring Russell Brand.  Why now? Probably because Brand seems like he could be a movie star, and Get Him to the Greek did good enough business. The remake (which also stars Helen Mirren, Greta Gerwig and Jennifer Garner) is about a spoiled rich kid/drunk who finds true love, but is supposed to marry someone else. It works, but almost in spite of its narrative. My review of the Blu-ray of 2011’s Arthur follows after the jump.

ARTHUR Review

by     Posted 3 years, 164 days ago

Just as surely as rain makes things wet, Arthur will make you laugh. Yet the film never justifies its existence—remake or not. Hollywood is determined to make Russell Brand a comedic lead, but simply placing his acquired comedic sensibilities in the star role doesn’t equal success. Throw in a bloated run time and a cute, but unromantic chemistry between Brand and Greta Gerwig, and we have the makings of a generic romantic comedy that is further burdened by being a remake. The real shame is that on paper, the film has enough comedic ingredients to make something worthwhile instead of simply unoffensive. Hit the jump for my full review.
