CYBERNATURAL Retitled UNFRIENDED and Set for an April 17, 2015 Release; M. Night Shyamalan’s THE VISIT Coming on September 11, 2015

by     Posted 40 days ago

Remember that Timur Bekmambetov-created and produced thriller that goes down in real-time from the point-of-view of a teen’s computer?  It’s got a new title.  Universal just announced that it’s doing away with Cybernatural and running with a more familiar term instead, Unfriended.  There’s something cheeky about it, but there’s also no doubt that some will have a tough time taking the new title seriously.  In addition to the title change, Unfriended will not hit theaters on April 17, 2015 as previously announced and will arrive on April 10th instead.

On top of that, Universal also revealed that one of its upcoming Blumhouse releases is M. Night Shyamalan’s The Visit.  That one will arrive in theaters on September 11, 2015.  Hit the jump for more on both films.

Comic-Con: M. Night Shyamalan Talks WAYWARD PINES, the Difficulty of Learning the TV Process, Keeping the Show Grounded, and More

by     Posted 146 days ago

Based on the best-selling novel Pines by Blake Crouch and brought to life by filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan, Wayward Pines is the intense new mind-bending, 10-episode event thriller from Fox.  When Secret Service Agent Ethan Burke (Matt Dillon) drives to the town of Wayward Pines, Idaho, to search for two missing federal agents, mysteries within the town pile up and Burke quickly begins to wonder whether he’ll ever make it out again.  The show also stars Terrence Howard, Carla Gugino, Melissa Leo, Toby Jones, Juliette Lewis, Reed Diamond, Shannyn Sossamon, Tim Griffin and Charlie Tahan.

While at Comic-Con to premiere the series, executive producer/pilot director M. Night Shyamalan spoke to press at a roundtable interview about what attracted him to this script, why TV is a better medium for this story, getting their first choice actor for each role, working with such a talented cast, how hard he found the TV experience, and developing a show and character bible that shifted completely, as they went.  Check out what he had to say after the jump.

M. Night Shyamalan in Talks to Re-Team with Bruce Willis for LABOR OF LOVE

by     Posted 327 days ago

M. Night Shyamalan is resurrecting one of his very first scripts, and he’s enlisting an old collaborator to bring the project to life.  Deadline reports that Shyamalan is in talks to re-team with his The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable star Bruce Willis for Labor of Love, which is one of the first screenplays that Shyamalan sold early in his career.  20th Century Fox initially picked up Labor of Love way back when, but it languished in development hell because Fox was unwilling to let Shyamalan take the helm.  Denzel Washington eyed the starring role a few years ago, but now Willis is looking to take on the lead as the project has gained new life.  Hit the jump for more.

M. Night Shyamalan Talks AFTER EARTH, Deleted Scenes, the New Sony F65 Camera, WAYWARD PINES, and Much More

by     Posted 1 year, 203 days ago

With director M. Night Shyamalan’s After Earth now playing in theaters, Sony Pictures recently invited us to the Virgin Galactic Spaceport in New Mexico for the press junket.  As you can imagine, it was an amazing place to talk about the movie.  If you’re not familiar with the plot, After Earth stars Will Smith and Jaden Smith as a father and son who crash land on a post-apocalyptic Earth, and it’s up to the son to fight for survival when the father is seriously injured.   For more on the film, watch three clips and some behind-the-scenes footage, and here are my video interviews with Will Smith, Jaden Smith, and screenwriter Gary Whitta.

A few days before the movie got released, I spoke to Shyamalan on the phone.  He talked about how he got involved in the project, making a film aimed at 12-15 year olds, the length of his first cut and if any of the deleted scenes will end up on the Blu-ray, if there are deleted scenes from his early work that have never been released, why he used the Sony F65 to shoot the film, IMAX, and much more.  In addition, he also talked about his upcoming pilot Wayward Pines, Kickstarter, and his next movie.  Hit the jump for more.

The metaphor of a young bird leaving the nest is a lesson all children learn, and usually at a young age (it’s just not enforced until much later).  Someone looked at this lesson, must have thought, “I like it, but how can we make it cost over $100 million?”, and the result was After Earth.  It’s not a bad lesson, but it’s hardly enough to support an entire movie.  Resting almost entirely on lead actors Jaden and Will Smith, director and co-writer M. Night Shyamalan surrounds the picture with sub-par special effects and bland action scenes.  Jaden Smith provides a strong lead performance, but his character is undermined by the story’s laughably literal moments, and a journey that rarely enthralls and never surprises.

M. Night Shyamalan Talks UNBREAKABLE and THE LAST AIRBENDER Sequels

by     Posted 1 year, 206 days ago

With director M. Night Shyamalan’s latest effort After Earth opening in theaters this weekend, the filmmaker discussed the possibility of returning to two of his previous properties for a sequel.  Fans of Shyamalan’s 2000 film Unbreakable, starring Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson, will be happy to hear that a sequel has not been forgotten. Fans of the Nickelodeon series Avatar: The Last Airbender, however, might cringe to hear that Shyamalan may be involved with a sequel to his 2010 live-action adaptation, The Last Airbender.  Ht the jump to see what he had to say about both pictures.

collider-top-5-sliceI realize that it’s a little too March to be discussing my favorite holiday gifts, but I only recently had the opportunity to dive into one of mine and, as a result, I feel the need to share it’s greatness with our readers. The ESPN 30 for 30 Collector’s Set Blu-ray is an outstanding collection of sports documentaries that is rife with social commentary and almost sure to have something for sports and/or documentary fans alike. Before I get accused of paid programming, I’ll disclaim that all thirty of its films aren’t home runs (that’s right, a sports pun). Moreover, I’m fairly sure that all of the series’ entries are available to watch instantly on Netflix right now making the physical collection redundant for some. Regardless of how you partake, I encourage you to sift through the series, find a topic that interests you, and give it a shot.

All recommendations aside, this week’s Top 5 features a healthy portion of Iron Man 3 coverage (including the new trailer), Oz the Great and Powerful interviews with Sam Raimi, James Franco, Mila Kunis, and more, the first trailer for The Hangover Part III, a sizable Justice League movie rumor, and the new trailer and poster for Will Smith and Jaden Smith‘s After Earth. As you may be expecting, a brief recap and link for each of the above waits after the jump.

New Trailer and Poster for M. Night Shyamalan’s AFTER EARTH Starring Will Smith and Jaden Smith

by     Posted 1 year, 290 days ago

Sony Pictures has released a new trailer and poster for director M. Night Shyamalan’s sci-fi film After Earth.  The film stars Will Smith and Jaden Smith as a father and son who crash land on a post-apocalyptic Earth, and it’s up to the son to fight for survival when the father is seriously injured.  This trailer reveals a ton of new footage as well as the reason behind the duo’s crash landing.  It’s a bildungsroman for not only Jaden Smith’s character, Kitai, but for the actor himself.  Will Smith takes a back seat in this actioner and guides his on-screen and off-screen son through its paces, allowing him to take metaphorical (and literal) leaps on his own.  Will we accept the younger Smith as an up-and-coming action star?  Will we allow Shyamalan back into our good graces?  We’ll find out this summer.

Hit the jump to watch the new trailer.  The film also stars Zoe Kravitz, Sophie Okonedo, and Isabelle Fuhrman.  After Earth opens June 7, 2013.

TCA Fox Roundup, Including New M. Night Shyamalan Series, Plus Seth Rogen to Guest-Star on THE MINDY PROJECT

by     Posted 1 year, 348 days ago

Fox has unveiled a few newsworthy items during the Television Critics Association winter press tour, including the announcement of a new series by M. Night Shyamalan, Wayward Pines, which the network says should be evocative of Twin Peaks (how many times have we heard that before?)  Additionally, a new series called Blood Brothers is also on the slate, focusing on a true story of the West Point Class of 1861.

A few more points of interest:

  • The networks’ veteran procedural Bones has been renewed for its ninth (ninth!) season.
  • Seth Rogen (Knocked Up) is set to to guest-star on an upcoming episode of The Mindy Project as Mindy’s “first kiss” (The show returns February 19th at 9:30pm)
  • Fox is unveiling “Animation Domination High-Def,” a new bloc for “alternative” comedy (translation: more super short-form, Adult Swim kinda stuff)

AFTER EARTH Sites Reveal 20 New Images and Lots of Background Information

by     Posted 2 years, 1 day ago

Before the world presumably ends tonight (or is it tomorrow?), we have some new images and information to share with you from M. Night Shyamalan’s dystopian sci-fi epic, After Earth. While they might not be much help in the way of surviving the coming apocalypse, they should provide some interesting background on the picture should the world continue to spin on. After Earth stars Will Smith and Jaden Smith as a father and son team of explorers who crash land on a hostile Earth and attempt to survive. The new images flesh out details of Earth before the fall as well as how things stand in the film’s contemporary time. After Earth opens June 7, 2013. Hit the jump to check out the new images.

First Trailer for M. Night Shyamalan’s AFTER EARTH Starring Will Smith and Jaden Smith

by     Posted 2 years, 11 days ago

Columbia has released the first trailer for M. Night Shyamalan‘s After Earth.  As you can see from the trailer, the plot centers on a father (Will Smith) and son (Jaden Smith) who crash land on a post-apocalyptic Earth, and it’s to the son to fight for survival when the father is seriously injured.  If there was another director at the helm, I would give this film the benefit of the doubt, even though Jaden Smith fighting digital animals for two hours seems less-than-exciting.  Even though Stephen Gaghan (Traffic) and Gary Whitta (The Book of Eli) had a hand in the screenplay, I simply can’t get my hopes up due to Shyamalan’s involvment.

The film also stars Zoe Kravitz, Sophie Okonedo, and Isabelle Fuhrman.  After Earth opens June 7, 2013.

M. Night Shyamalan Lands Moby Dick-Inspired Drama LOST HORIZON at NBC

by     Posted 2 years, 79 days ago

Recently, M. Night Shyamalan landed a put-pilot series at SyFy and now it looks as if he’s doubled up with some network television support.  NBC has reportedly agreed to another put-pilot drama series from Shyamalan and writer John Glenn (Eagle Eye).  The series, titled Lost Horizondraws inspiration from Herman Melville’s classic whale tale, Moby Dick (which seems to be a popular source lately). The premise of the series is under wraps, but Deadline reports that it centers on a small East Coast fishing village and deals with themes of obsession and the unknown.  Shyamalan is attached to direct the potential pilot, which will be written by Glenn.

M. Night Shyamalan Moves to SyFy for Scripted Series PROOF

by     Posted 2 years, 141 days ago

While I am a fan of director M. Night Shyamalan’s story ideas, his feature film track record has fallen off precipitously since 1999′s The Sixth Sense.  Perhaps a dip in the small screen pool will get him back on track, as Shyamalan is heading to SyFy with the scripted series, Proof.  Based on an original idea from Shyamalan (+1), Proof revolves around the orphaned son of billionaire parents who offers a reward if someone can present proof of life after death; Shyamalan will also direct (-1?).
