FIFTY SHADES OF GREY Trailer and Images: Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan Get Kinky

Focus Features and Universal Pictures have released the first Fifty Shades of Grey trailer and images for director Sam Taylor-Johnson’s (Nowhere Boy) adaptation of the provocative E.L. James book.  The story revolves around Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) and her introduction to a whole new world of sexual discovery and risqué activities in the hands of billionaire Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan).  The trailer looks like it could easily be for a softcore porn on Cinemax or a serial killer thriller (though maybe I’m getting the latter vibe because I know Dornan from The Fall), and it gets so ridiculous that you just have to laugh.  I assume the camp is part of its charm, and I will say that visually Taylor-Johnson has found a rather striking tone for the pic.  Regardless of what those unfamiliar with James’ source material might think, the film is probably going to make fans (and Focus/Universal) very happy.

Sony Pictures Classics has released a few new Magic in the Moonlight images from writer/director Woody Allen’s latest film.  The romantic comedy is set in the south of France in the 1920s and stars Colin Firth as an Englishman brought in to help unmask a possible swindle, as a young woman (Emma Stone) claims to be able to communicate with spirits.  As he spends more time with the girl, however, he starts to wonder if she may not be a fraud after all.  The first trailer promises a delightful romp, and these images show off more of the gorgeous Jazz-age landscapes as well as a wonderfully goofy face courtesy of one Ms. Emma Stone.

Sony Pictures Classics has released the first Magic in the Moonlight trailer.  Woody Allen‘s romantic comedy is set in the south of France in the 1920s and stars Colin Firth as an Englishman brought in to help unmask a possible swindle, as a young woman (Emma Stone) claims to be able to communicate with spirits.  As he spends more time with the girl, however, he starts to wonder if she may not be a fraud after all.  The film’s “supernatural comedy” leanings aren’t wholly dissimilar from Allen’s approach to Midnight in Paris, and with Firth and Stone as the two leads, there’s an unending amount of charm on display.  In short, the film looks to be an absolute delight.

New Image and Plot Details for Woody Allen’s MAGIC IN THE MOONLIGHT Starring Emma Stone, Colin Firth, and Marcia Gay Harden

A new image has gone online for Woody Allen‘s upcoming film Magic in the Moonlight.  We previously reported that the movie “is a romantic comedy about an Englishman (Colin Firth) brought in to help unmask a possible swindle.  Personal and professional complications ensue. The film is set in the south of France in the 1920s against a backdrop of wealthy mansions, the Côte d’Azur, jazz joints and fashionable spots for the wealthy of the Jazz Age.”  The latest issue of EW reports that the “possible swindle” involves the Englishman trying “to expose a phony mystic (Emma Stone), only to end up falling for her.”  Furthermore, Marcia Gay Harden will play “Stone’s mother and co-conspirator.”

Allen says he had the idea for “ages” but it only recently clicked when he decided to set it in the south of France in the 1920s rather than the present day.  Allen also said that the reason for him shooting so many of his recent films in Europe is “By sheer accident because I was getting European financing. I’ve wound up being a foreign filmmaker.”  Hit the jump to check out the image.  Magic in the Moonlight opens July 25th.

In the wake of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination in Dallas on November 22, 1963, the country went into a frenzy as news stations produced headline after headline—accurate and inaccurate—of what had occurred at Dealey Plaza that afternoon.  But what happened amidst the chaos of one of the most devastating events in US history and how did those involved in the event respond?  Parkland delves into the aftermath, giving viewers insight into the lives of those closest to the tragedy and following them in a span of four days.  From the nurses and doctors who tended to a wounded President Kennedy to the Secret Service agents responsible for protecting him, and the infamous Abraham Zapruder who captured everything on his 8mm camera, the film focuses on the stories within the news headlines.  More after the jump.

TIFF 2013: PARKLAND Review

This November will be the 50th anniversary of the Kennedy assassination.  There will be TV specials, memorials, and think pieces.  Peter Landesman’s Parkland looks beyond the assassination and even President Kennedy to examine the surrounding figures on that infamous day and their roles in one of the most important events in American history.  It’s a paradoxical film that mythologizes the people who have been overlooked by the history books, but also demythologizes the actual events by showing the details that were overshadowed by the moment when the course of history changed.  The result is a movie that captivates in how it depicts little moments from average people, but also undermines the story’s power by forcing drama on an inherently dramatic situation.

First Clip for PARKLAND Features Zac Efron, Mark Duplass and Marcia Gay Harden

The first clip from writer-director Peter Landesman’s JFK assassination drama Parkland is now available.  It features Zac Efron as doctor Jim Carrico, who is shocked to see the President wheeled in on a stretcher as a Secret Service agent (Mark Duplass) and attending nurse Doris Nelson (Marcia Gay Harden) look to Carrico to save him.  While parts of the recently-released trailer looked promising, I was a bit concerned with some of the forced dialogue and hammy performances.  Unfortunately, this clip seems to highlight those weaknesses so perhaps it wasn’t the strongest choice as an introduction for potential audiences.

First Trailer for JFK Assassination Drama PARKLAND

The first trailer for writer/director Peter Landesman’s upcoming drama Parkland has landed online.  Produced by Tom Hanks, the pic revolves around the chaotic events that occurred at Parkland Hospital in Dallas on the day that President John F. Kennedy was assassinated.  Parkland Hospital is where Kennedy, Lee Harvey Oswald, and Jack Ruby all died.   At first blush, Parkland could easily be passed off as a film that simply wants to capitalize on the 50th anniversary of JFK’s assassination, especially since it must exist in the same spectrum as Oliver Stone’s 1991 effort JFK, along with the raw imagery of Abraham Zapruder’s historic home movie.  However, this trailer suggests that the film has captured the chaos of the event itself and the ensuing finger-pointing, along with the period-specific aesthetic; let’s hope the decision to focus on Parkland Hospital turns out to be an inspired one.  There are a few hammy moments in this first look, but Paul Giamatti’s performance is certainly one worth watching.

Tony Kaye made a big splash in 1998 with his directorial debut American History X.  He has kept busy in the years since, but maintained a low profile.  That could change with his new film Detachment.  The cast will bring name recognition to the film: veterans Adrien Brody, James Caan, Christina Hendricks, Lucy Liu, Marcia Gay Harden, Bryan Cranston, William Petersen, Blythe Danner, Tim Blake Nelson are joined by fresh faces like Betty Kaye and Sami Gayle.  Tribeca Films acquired the film in September, and has released trailers and clips over the last month that stand out from the vast collection of promotional material we host here at Collider.  The story follows a substitute teacher (Brody) on assignment at a failing public school.  The appeal of Detachment is in the execution, so hit the jump for trailers, clips, posters, and images from the film.

Andrew Garfield, Jennifer Garner and Marcia Gay Harden to Star in BACK ROADS

It looks like Spidey’s found his next film, and it’s not a big-budget action flick. Andrew Garfield, Jennifer Garner and Marica Gay Harden have been tapped to star in the adaptation of Tawni O’Dell’s bestselling novel Back Roads. Adrian Lyne (Fatal Attraction) will direct the murder-mystery drama that tells the story of a young man (Garfield) who is forced to take care of his three sisters after his mother is sent to prison for murdering their abusive father. Garner will portray a neighbor, with whom Garfield strikes up a romance, while Harden will take on the role of Garfield’s therapist. “Several high-profile young actresses” are apparently being vetted to star as Garfield’s sisters.

It’s promising to see Garfield choose darker, more dramatic material like this in light of his recent shot to super-stardom following his casting as Spider-Man. He was pitch-perfect in Never Let Me Go and stood out in an already stellar cast in The Social Network. Garner more than proved she can handle drama with her turn in Juno and Academy Award-winner Harden is fantastic in just about every role she takes on. Variety reports that Lyne is writing the screenplay alongside O’Dell. Hit the jump for a full synopsis of the novel.
