As someone whose only firsthand experience with the Star Trek franchise comes by virtue of J.J. Abrams' two Trek films, I know I'm in over my head when the topic presents itself. When you mention Trek, you're referencing (either directly or indirectly) a rich legacy filled with peaks and valleys, genre-defining characters and moments, and an international fanbase that rivals any of pop-culture's most enduring titles. And yet here I am, with two films under my belt (both of which I enjoyed), talking about it. Obviously, I have nothing at stake with regards to Star Trek Into Darkness. Whether you like it or dislike it is of no consequence to me. My only aim today is to extend a humble word of caution to the Trek fans who have years of equity built-up in their beloved franchise: be careful not to dismiss or begrudge it solely because it's trying to appeal to the largest possible audience. Abrams' Trek films aren't above reproach, but they also aren't void of redeeming qualities. Try to at least acknowledge some of those qualities when tearing into them or risk coming off as someone whose real issue is that a bunch of people now enjoy this thing that you once considered yourself unique for liking.
All preachiness aside, this week's Top 5 includes several interviews from Star Trek Into Darkness, rumors surrounding Christopher Nolan being approached to direct James Bond 24, the first trailers for Marvel's new ABC series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., a new trailer for ...

The good news is that a number of Marvel comics properties are back in the hands of Marvel Studios and may once again be seen on screen. The bad news is that the feature treatment ain't happening for all of them. Marvel's Kevin Feige talked about a number of planned and possible superhero films coming up in the next few years, including an adaptation of the lesser-known property Inhumans. More recognizable names - like Blade, Punisher, Ghost Rider and Daredevil - are also under Marvel's control once again, but will have to find the right time, place and treatment to fit into the studio's current plans. Hit the jump for updates on the above-mentioned properties and more, including the chances of a Marvel Zombies one-off.

EW recently held an extensive interview with Feige, who spoke candidly on a number of Marvel's properties. One particular hero Feige stayed quiet on was Black Panther, who has been rumored to be getting the big screen treatment (or even small screen with Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. now ordered to a full series). While there's no update on T'Challa, Feige did have plenty of other things to talk about:

Inhumans

When it comes to branching out from the ordinary, Marvel could have gone with Inhumans or Guardians of the Galaxy for their big test feature. GotG is all set, but Inhumans might not be off the table just yet:
“Inhumans is cool, they’re really great characters. The most powerful guy is the king who doesn’t say a word and if he ...

There have been lots of rumors flying around about two potential films on Marvel's upcoming Phase Three slate: a standalone Hulk film and a Doctor Strange origin story. Marvel's Kevin Feige recently talked about plans for a number of upcoming films, including these two standalone projects. In short, Feige said that there are no current plans for a solo Hulk movie, but they are talking about it and he isn't opposed to keeping Mark Ruffalo in the role. For Doctor Strange, the property is expected to be a top priority for the studio and will feature the first film fully devoted to "a world of pure magic." Hit the jump for much, much more from Feige.

In an extensive interview with EW, Feige spoke at length about a number of Marvel films including Hulk and Doctor Strange. Here's what he had to say on the former:
“People were like, ‘You’ve already had two movies. How is that going to happen?’ One of the goals that we talked about with Joss [Whedon] on Avengers was we want Hulk to be cool again.”
Feige also addressed the idea of Ruffalo, now 45, playing an older version of Banner:
“If anyone could be a great 55-year-old Hulk, it’s Mark so I’m not worried about that."
Finally, Feige talked about the rumors of possible Planet Hulk and World War Hulk adaptations:
“What we’re excited about exploring and expanding is Mark — and Banner’s not in Planet Hulk at all. The fun of the Hulk is his interaction with humans.”
Fans might disagree on that point, but at least ...

With Iron Man 3 crossing the $1 billion mark at the box office today, Marvel is currently enjoying its status at the top of the superhero movie food chain. The studio has a full slate of films hitting theaters over the next couple of years as part of its Phase Two plans, culminating in The Avengers 2 in 2015. However, even with the prospect of Thor and Captain America sequels and Guardians of the Galaxy on the horizon, fans are still clamoring for more, more, more. The studio’s Phase Three is a giant question mark at the moment, with only one film firmly slated for release to kick off a new batch of superhero movies: Ant-Man.

Director/co-writer Edgar Wright recently talked a bit about the film and why it’s taken so long to come to fruition, revealing that production will finally get underway next year. Hit the jump to read on.

Ant-Man is currently set to hit theaters on November 6, 2015, but it was actually one of the first films that Marvel Studios announced way back when they started working on Iron Man. Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead director Edgar Wright has been attached to helm this whole time, having penned the script with Joe Cornish, but Wright tells EW that he actually made the decision himself to put the film off for so long:
“I actually made the choice to make Scott Pilgrim and The World’s End before this one. And Ant-Man is such a big special-effects film, it’s almost like the further it goes on, the ...

The Billionaire Box Office Club has a new member. Just a couple weeks out from its domestic release, Marvel’s Iron Man 3 has now grossed over $1 billion worldwide. That makes the Shane Black-helmed pic the 16th film ever to cross that benchmark, as it surpasses the grosses of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone ($974.9 million), Jurassic Park ($969.4 million), and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End ($963.4 million). It also makes it the second highest grossing Marvel film of all time, easily besting Iron Man 2’s worldwide gross of $623.9 million. Obviously, though, Iron Man 3 has a long way to go to catch up to The Avengers, which takes the number three all-time slot with $1.5 billion. Hit the jump for more.

Though the positive reviews/reception certainly helped, one can point to the success of The Avengers as a major contributing factor to Iron Man 3’s box office achievement. It’ll be interesting to see if that good will carries over into Marvel’s subsequent films, with Thor: The Dark World hitting theaters this fall and Captain America: The Winter Soldier scheduled to arrive next April. At this rate, though, The Avengers 2 is on track to gross roughly $1 gajillion in 2015.

Will there be any more billion dollar grossers this year? Man of Steel certainly has a shot, as does Fast & Furious 6, but what do you folks think? Will Iron Man 3 stand alone or will we have another massive hit on our hands in 2013? ...

Last night I turned to Xbox Live to check out Shane Carruth's Upstream Color for the first time. While not quite as impenetrable after one viewing as its predecessor, 2004's Primer, Upstream still demands the utmost attention of its viewers in exchange for the slightest hint of clarity. The dialogue is sparse, the setting is ever-changing, the editing is heavily dependent on juxtaposition as a way of creating meaning, and the sound design/foley work is turned up to "11" at times. Whereas Primer played more to the intellect behind making time travel a reality, Upstream is an extremely visceral experience that is more interested, or at least more successful, in eliciting an emotional response than explaining how a rare organism can be harvested, used as a method of mind control, and ultimately link humans to pigs. The exact degree to which it succeeds will vary from viewer to viewer but it's ultimately an experience I recommend taking in.
Of course a movie like Upstream lends itself to more than a few lines of my humble analysis, but that's not actually why we're here. In this week's Top 5 you can check out the first trailer and poster for Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity, a generous number of set pics from director Jonathan Liebesman's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot, Steve's exclusive phone interview with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, the first trailer for Ender's Game, and a look at Iron Man by the Numbers. A brief recap and link to each will greet you after ...

When you get to talk to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, you never have enough time. After all, he knows everything that's going on behind-the-scenes at the studio, including which projects are getting ready to be announced. So when I recently landed an exclusive phone interview with him for Iron Man 3, I tried to use the time to find out about a million different things.

During the wide ranging conversation, we talked about how long he'll be staying at Marvel, how the studio goes about choosing directors, whether The Avengers sequel be called The Avengers 2 or if it will have a subtitle, whether they have considered casting Dwayne Johnson in a Marvel movie, the status of the Doctor Strange movie, if anyone is currently working on a Falcon or War Machine spinoff movie, whether they have cast Thanos yet, if they be at Comic-Con, D23, or both, and so much more. If you're a Marvel fan I promise you'll enjoy reading this interview.

Collider: A lot of people are discussing Robert Downey Jr.’s contract and how it will impact the Avengers sequel and Iron Man movies. But I think the bigger question is, when does your contract end?

KEVIN FEIGE: You’re the first person that’s ever asked me that question.

I think a lot of people should be asking that question because being honest, there is a reason why all the Marvel movies are good and I think it has your name on it.

FEIGE: Oh, that’s very nice. My contract negotiations are not nearly as exciting ...

The release of Iron Man 3 kicked off Marvel’s Phase Two with a bang, as the Shane Black-directed film opened to the second highest grossing opening weekend of all time—second only to Marvel’s The Avengers. Now the studio looks ahead to the future, and while we have a number of sequels headed our way in the immediate future (Thor 2, Captain America 2, The Avengers 2), the studio is also planning to branch out with new feature film adaptations of Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-Man. As the Marvel Cinematic Universe becomes more widely populated, fans have been wondering whether supporting characters from the previous films will get their day in the sun with their own spinoffs.

Steve recently spoke with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige for an extended interview, and during the course of their conversation Steve asked Feige if anyone at Marvel was currently developing any spinoff films for War Machine or Falcon. Somewhat surprisingly, Feige answered in the negative. Hit the jump for more.

Much has been made about the fact that Robert Downey Jr.’s contract with Marvel is up for renegotiation, but there was always the possibility that another Iron Man character could pick up the mantle in a future film. As we saw with Iron Man 3, Don Cheadle’s Rhodey aka War Machine has become much more active in his own suit, and the sequel Captain America: The Winter Soldier will see the appearance of Anthony Mackie as Falcon, another supporting character from the comics who eventually ...

The folks at Marvel are no doubt celebrating the massive opening weekend for Iron Man 3—which currently stands as the second highest of all time behind The Avengers—but the studio still has a very large question mark lingering over its future. With the release of Iron Man 3, star Robert Downey Jr. fulfilled his contract with Marvel. He is not contractually obligated to appear in any more Marvel films, and thus has a rather sizable amount of leverage over Marvel going forward given that he is, to the moviegoing public, the face of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Iron Man is the most recognizable character in Marvel Studios' roster, and the character is now synonymous with Robert Downey Jr.

As such, everyone has been wondering whether RDJ will be back and if there are any more standalone Iron Man films in the future. The negotiations have now begun, and things are, well, a bit complicated. Hit the jump for much more.

The folks over at Heat Vision report that Downey and his wife/producing partner Susan Downey put together a dinner on May 6th that included Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige, Disney Studios head Alan Horn, and Iron Man 3 director Shane Black. While the dinner served as a celebration for the success of Iron Man 3, it also kicked off the renegotiation phase for Downey and Marvel.

Apparently Downey has entered negotiations to reprise his role as Tony Stark in The Avengers 2 and The Avengers 3, but the prospect of Iron Man 4 has yet to be ...

Judging by the massive box office take for Iron Man 3, most of you probably caught the latest Marvel film last week. While the pic’s twists and turns were met with a decidedly mixed response from diehard comics fans, most agree that co-writer/director Shane Black crafted a highly entertaining pic to kick off Marvel’s Phase Two. The film was capped by a fantastic end credits sequence that plays almost like the intro for a Saturday morning cartoon (“It’s Iron Man and Friends!”), and that sequence has now landed online in full for our viewing pleasure.

Hit the jump to watch the credits sequence, and click here to catch the latest episode of our podcast The Collision in which we talk all things Iron Man 3. [Update: Unfortunately the video has been pulled. Sorry if you missed it!]

Much has been made recently about the fact that Robert Downey Jr.’s contract with Marvel is currently up for re-negotiation. When Downey finally landed the lead role in Iron Man back in 2007, he signed a contract with Marvel for a set number of films. Cut to five years later and RDJ is now the most recognizable face of a unique and ambitious cinematic universe that culminated in last year’s The Avengers, which currently holds the record for the highest grossing opening weekend of all time. While Downey’s performance as Tony Stark was certainly one of the keys to Marvel’s success, that crazy Marvel Cinematic Universe plan and its execution are the brainchild of Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige.

Steve recently spoke with Feige for an extended interview, and during the course of their wide-ranging conversation, Steve asked Feige when his contract with Marvel ends. While it’s tough to think of an Iron Man movie without Robert Downey Jr., it’s impossible to consider the whole Marvel Studios going forward without Kevin Feige at the helm. Hit the jump to for Feige’s response and how long he thinks he’ll be running Marvel.

Here’s the full exchange between Steve and Feige regarding when his contract with Marvel is up for renegotiation:
Steve: A lot of people are discussing Robert Downey Jr.’s contract and how it will impact the Avengers sequel and Iron Man movies. But I think the bigger question is, when does your contract end?

Marvel makes it look easy. That's what kept running through my head while watching Iron Man 3 Thursday night. Pumping out one solid standalone film after another with the overall goal of creating a whole that is equally, if not more, entertaining than its formidable parts can't be that easy. And yet, Marvel makes it seem that way. In a medium outside of their native reach no less. Granted, Iron Man 3 isn't without its flaws. But it doesn't have to be. It succeeds on the exact level it's meant to: in moving both the individual character and universal stories ahead in an entertaining and logical way. If "Marvel makes it looks easy" was my primary takeaway from IM3, "DC has their work cut out for them" isn't far behind.
But enough Marvel love for one opening paragraph. In this week's Top 5 we've got Iron Man 3 interviews with director Shane Black and more, a video blog review for Star Trek Into Darkness, the Pacific Rim trailer from WonderCon, Fox's courting of Michael B. Jordan the the role of Human Torch in its upcoming Fantastic Four reboot, and the new trailer for Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx's White House Down. A brief recap and link to each is a "Continue Reading" click away.
1. IRON MAN 3 Interviews with Shane Black and More

I briefly share my thoughts on the pic in the opening paragraph and while there's definitely more to talk about (including one of the biggest surprise turns I can remember in ...

As Marvel kicks off Phase Two with a bang this weekend with the release of director Shane Black’s excellent Iron Man 3, the studio is now looking ahead to the end of Phase Two and beyond. Over the years, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has frequently talked about the possibility of a feature film adaptation of the comics character Doctor Strange. While Marvel was focused on introducing audiences to their new approach to superhero movies with Phase One, Thor and The Avengers opened the door to more cosmic-geared stories, and Phase Two is heavy on the otherworldly with Thor: The Dark World and Guardians of the Galaxy. As such, the inclusion of Doctor Strange—a practicing sorcerer who wields magical powers—seems like a swell fit in the near future.

Steve recently sat down with Kevin Feige for an extended interview, and during the course of their wide-ranging conversation Feige offered a promising update on the impending Doctor Strange movie. Feige said that they are now actively working on the film, and it should be one of the next Marvel movies following the beginning of Phase Three. Hit the jump to read on.

During their interview, Steve asked Feige for an update on Doctor Strange and the Marvel Studios president said they are now actively developing the film:
“Dr. Strange is something that I talk about often and it’s sort of next up for us to dig into and explore. Our executive producer of Iron Man 3, having done Captain America: The First Avenger and as that was ...

It’s almost like this weekend is a national holiday with regards to all the hoopla surrounding the release of Marvel’s first Phase Two film, Iron Man 3. We’ve already shared details and images for Thor: The Dark World and Ant-Man as well as new info and concept art for Guardians of the Galaxy, and now it’s time for some updates on Marvel’s foray into television: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The pilot for the S.H.I.E.L.D.-centric potential series has already been shot (Joss Whedon co-wrote and directed), and now the series awaits an all-but-guaranteed greenlight from ABC.

We know that Clark Gregg’s Agent Coulson returns as the star of the show (under some strange circumstances) and the series takes place after the events of The Avengers, but further details about how Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. would fit into the larger Marvel universe have thus far been unclear. EW’s recent cover story on Phase Two provides a closer look at the show, however, with Marvel’s Kevin Feige addressing the possibility of using the series to introduce new characters and Robert Downey Jr. talking about a possible appearance on the show. Hit the jump to read on.

While Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. certainly marks new territory for Marvel, many have wondered if the show could be used as a sort of “minor leagues” to test out new characters before incorporating them into the film universe. EW asked Feige if we could see some as-yet-unused heroes pop up in the show, and he sounded optimistic:
“If that works the way everyone expects ...

Last night I had the opportunity to check out a late showing of Pain & Gain during which I encountered a few thoughts that I couldn't shake: 1) I wish Michael Bay would make more films like this and less of the transforming car variety. 2) Why can't Dwayne Johnson be in every movie? 3) This is probably the craziest "Based on a True Story" movie I've ever seen. I've heard Bay say that some of the most extreme elements of the plot are also the most true to the original story. This is good to know because had someone written a lot of what shows up in the film I would likely call it too farfetched for my suspended disbelief to withstand. Make no mistake, this is a wild, entertaining ride that utilizes layers of action, crime, comedy, sex, and even a touch of sadism to keep you invested from beginning to end.
My mini-review aside, this week's Top 5 includes the first trailer for Thor: The Dark World, Pain & Gain interviews with Michael Bay, Mark Wahlberg, and more, a recap of our visit to Pixar for Monsters University, news that Zack Snyder could take the helm of Justice League pending Man of Steel's success, and the first entry in a new interview series from Steve: "Breaking Down the Movie" with The Place Beyond the Pines director Derek Cianfrance. As is customary, a brief recap and link to each of the above is ready and waiting after the jump.

Kicking off the blockbuster movie season, Marvel Studios is releasing Iron Man 3 on May 3rd. This time out, brilliant billionaire inventor Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.), aka Iron Man, faces a terrifying enemy, known as The Mandarin (Sir Ben Kingsley), whose reach knows no bounds, and he must rely on his own instincts to protect those that he loves. From director Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang), the film also stars Gwyneth Paltrow (“Pepper Potts”), Don Cheadle (“James Rhodes”), Guy Pearce (“Aldrich Killian”), Rebecca Hall (“Maya Hansen”) and Jon Favreau (“Happy Hogan”).

During this press conference at the film’s Los Angeles junket, co-stars Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle and Sir Ben Kingsley talked about the biggest challenge in making Iron Man 3, the transformation of Pepper Potts, how Rhodey has evolved, how much of The Mandarin was actually in the script, what director Shane Black brought to this installment of the franchise, finding the right tone, how much they wanted the aftermath of the events in The Avengers to affect Tony Stark, what they hope people get out of the film, and the future of the Iron Man franchise. Check out what they had to say after the jump, and be aware that there are some spoilers.

Question: Robert, what was your biggest challenge, this time?

ROBERT DOWNEY: I think the big challenge is that these movies are only ever as good as their bad guys. In addition to what we wanted to have happen with Pepper and the arc ...

The U.S. premiere of Iron Man 3 was held last night in Los Angeles, and pretty much everyone from the Marvel Cinematic Universe walked the red carpet. Though the various actors, actresses, directors, and producers didn’t exactly have time for lengthy interviews while making their way into the theater, a couple of them did drop some interesting tidbits about some upcoming Marvel films. Gwyneth Paltrow, for one, seems to think that there isn’t going to be an Iron Man 4, and Joss Whedon provided a few more updates on The Avengers 2, even hinting at two new characters he says are in the film. Hit the jump to read on.

It’s no secret that both Paltrow and Robert Downey Jr.’s contracts with Marvel are up for re-negotiation. Downey Jr initially signed a 6-picture deal with the studio (which includes short cameos like in The Incredible Hulk), and that will be complete when he appears in The Avengers 2. While Marvel producer Kevin Feige has previously said that the studio would likely take a James Bond approach to the series when the day comes that Downey Jr. hangs up the suit, the fact remains that the actor is the face of Marvel right now, and he’s absolutely their biggest draw at the box office.

As such, many assumed that Marvel would essentially back a Brinks truck up to Downey Jr.’s house in order to have him re-up for more films. However, Paltrow doesn’t seem so sure as she dropped a bit of a ...

One of the last major pieces of Marvel’s upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy film appears to be falling into place. Director James Gunn has already secured Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), David Bautista (Drax the Destroyer), and most recently Michael Rooker (Yondu) to play his titular Guardians in the film, and just yesterday we learned that Ophelia Lovibond (No Strings Attached) has signed on to play a mysterious character that’s rumored to be an aide to the villainous The Controller.

Well, now it appears that one of the actors that previously tested for the protagonist role of Star-Lord has subsequently been set as the film’s villain, as Pushing Daisies star Lee Pace is in final talks to play the antagonist in Guardians of the Galaxy. Hit the jump for more.

The folks over at The Wrap report that Pace is in final negotiations to play the baddie in Guardians of the Galaxy. We know that the villainous Thanos will be involved in Guardians in some capacity, but recently we’ve been hearing more about the comics villain The Collector also being involved in the film. Thanos is that big purple guy who showed up at the end of The Avengers and is presumably going to be the principal villain in The Avengers 2, but The Controller is a highly skilled chemist and mechanical engineer who specializes in mind control and sports an armored exoskeleton.

Pace's role is being kept firmly under wraps, but given that The Controller is the main henchman for Thanos ...

It appears that Marvel Studios has secured the rights to another very popular comics character. While 20th Century Fox’s 2003 take on Daredevil was a bit of a misfire, the studio had been trying to move forward on a new iteration of the character in recent years. 30 Days of Night director David Slade came onboard to direct a Daredevil reboot in the spring of 2011, and Fringe scribe Brad Caleb Kane was subsequently tapped to pen the screenplay. Movement on the project was quiet for a full year, though, and the following summer Slade left the film to helm the pilot for NBC’s Hannibal.

When Slade exited the project, however, Fox was facing a ticking clock. The studio had to move quickly to get a new Daredevil movie into production before the rights to the character reverted back to Marvel. Well, a new Daredevil film failed to materialize in the ensuing months, and Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige confirmed today that Marvel now holds to the rights to the character. Hit the jump for more.

When Slade jumped ship on Daredevil, Fox tried in vain to get an iteration of the film going with Joe Carnahan. The Narc director pitched a hard-boiled, 1970s-set take on the character, but it would have proven impossible to get that iteration of the story off the ground before the cutoff date, and Carnahan understandably wasn’t willing to start shooting without a finished script.

While we heard nothing about Daredevil after Carnahan’s bid to direct didn’t pan out, many ...

And Phase Two is off and running. With the release of Iron Man 3 just over a week away, Disney and Marvel unveiled the first teaser trailer for this fall’s sequel Thor: The Dark World this morning. While Marvel dipped its toe into the fantastical realm with the first Thor, it’s clear from this debut trailer that director Alan Taylor’s (Game of Thrones) follow-up is very heavy on the fantasy. We’ve gone through the new trailer and screengrabbed a batch of images, giving us a better look at the world of Thor 2 and its characters. Christopher Eccleston’s villain Malekith looks especially sinister, and I can’t get enough of Tom Hiddleston’s Loki reveal.

Hit the jump to check out the images, and if you somehow missed the trailer click here. The film also stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Jaimie Alexander, Stellan Skarsgård, Idris Elba, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Kat Dennings, Ray Stevenson, Zachary Levi, Tadanobu Asano, Jaimie Alexander, Rene Russo, and Anthony Hopkins. Thor: The Dark World opens in 3D on November 8th.

Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot ...
