PROJECT X Blu-ray Review

by     Posted 2 years, 86 days ago

Project X was a surprise of the year, a raunchy teen comedy that took advantage of a budget-trimming found-footage gimmick and was successful enough at the box office to warrant a sequel.  Fans of Superbad, American Pie and The Hangover will find common ground with Project X, but the film goes even farther than any of them dared.  So how can you enjoy the world’s most insane party without risking jail time and millions of dollars in property damage? Pick up Project X on Blu-ray so you can watch the madness from the comfort of your couch.  Hit the jump for my review of director Nima Nourizadeh’s Project X on Blu-ray.

Imagine the ultimate high school senior year house party from the male perspective and push it over the edge. That’s a rough description of the absurdity and chaos that breaks out in the latest handheld camera film called Project X. Following three seniors trying to throw a party that will get them noticed once and for all, they end up losing control and everything turns into absolute chaos as it expands. However, that’s after they have a whole hell of a lot of fun getting there. Unfortunately, like waking up with a hangover, the ending of this film almost ruins what happened before. Almost. We first reported on The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman almost a year ago when Shia LaBeouf was reportedly attached to the project. The Transformers star is still starring as the title character and now has a director to work with. Fredrik Bond, a director of numerous commercials, will be directing the “romantic actioner” from screenwriter Matt Drake (Project X). Another commercials director, Dante Ariola, had previously been attached to direct. The plot follows Charlie and his romantic relationship with a girl who has unfortunately been claimed by an insane mob boss with a penchant for violence and a gang at his disposal. Pre-production has started for the Voltage and Bona Fide Productions project. Hit the jump for an example of Bond’s work and the full synopsis of The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman.

Charlie St. Cloud movie image Zac Efron slice

Zac Efron has been tapped to star in a new untitled romantic-action flick for Mandate Pictures. The screenplay for the film, which was previously titled The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman, was written by Matt Drake (the upcoming Project X) and ended up on 2007’s Black List of the top unproduced screenplays. Fredrik Bond will make his feature film debut directing the project, having helmed numerous commercials for brands like Nike, Adidas, Guinness and Heineken. The story is as follows:

The film will follow Efron, a suburban kid, who spontaneously travels to Eastern Europe to find himself.  Early on in his comedic journey, he falls for an alluring young woman and the only thing standing between them is her charismatic, dangerous ex from a criminal underworld.  Armed with little more than his wit and naive charm, Efron endures one bruising beat down after another in order to woo the girl he loves and achieve salvation.

Albert Berger and Ron Yerxa of Bona Fide Productions are producing the film along with William Horberg. Efron recently finished filming the Nicholas Sparks adaptation The Lucky One, and just wrapped on Garry Marshall’s New Years Eve. Hit the jump for the full press release.

Shia LaBeouf has signed on to lead Dante Ariola’s “romantic actioner” The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman.  Written by Matt Drake, Countryman centers on Charlie (LaBeouf), a charming gent who falls in love with a girl who’s past association with an “insanely violent crime boss with a gang of thugs at his disposal,” proves slightly hazardous to Charlie’s health. However, Charlie’s willingness to keep getting his ass kicked in an attempt to woo Gabi may lead him to having his heart literally broken.

The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman will be the feature film debut of Ariola, whose previous work includes commercials for Coca-Cola, Levi’s, Nike, HP, and PlayStation.  Drake’s script for Countryman was on the 2007 Black List (list of the best unproduced screenplay in Hollywood).  LaBeouf will next be seen in theaters this September in Oliver Stone’s Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.  Hit the jump to read the full press release.
