The thematic V’s of today’s movie development article are Virginity and Vietnam:

  • Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg (American Reunion) will produce and possibly direct Cherries, an R-rated comedy about three dads who try to stop the pact their daughters made to lose their virginity on prom night.
  • Matt Cook will write and direct the adaptation of Matterhorn, set in 1969 on a fire-support base located between Laos and the DMZ amid the Vietnam War.

Hit the jump for details on both projects.

The noble Yeti: a creature neglected by modern cinema.  We lavish our attentions on vampires and zombies, but the Yeti goes ignored and unloved.  Until nowTHR reports that awful screenwriter Ehren Kruger (Transformers: Dark of the Moon) will write the screenplay for director Brian Beletic‘s untitled adventure movie based on Disney’s Matterhorn ride.  Per the logline, “The story centers on five young adventure seekers — an action sports guy, travel guide, cartographer, archeologist and escape artist — who venture into the Alps for mysterious reasons and face Yetis that guard a secret.”  In other Kruger news, Variety reports that he and co-writer Bradley Cramp have sold their script Invertigo, but there are no details on the plot.  Presumably, the plot does not involve yetis and is therefore less worthy of our attention.

The scope has been broadened beyond the Matterhorn and Disney hopes “to keep part of the movie grounded in hardcore adventure.”  As well they should.  Softcore adventuring will not do when it comes to YETI SECRETS. [Artwork above by Kiareri]

Brian Beletic to Direct Disney’s Matterhorn Movie

Yes, that Matterhorn movie is still happening. Last summer we learned that Disney was prepping a feature film inspired by their popular Matterhorn ride (the one with the toboggans and snow). Now Deadline reports that commercials director Brian Beletic has been set to make his feature directorial debut on the project. While the initial logline involved kids confronting Yetis at the top of a mountain, the new logline is much, much worse:

“A small group of young, super adventure/explorers, each with a specific skill set, are brought to the remote backcountry of the Pennine Alps under various guises for a trek across one of the planet’s remaining untouched realms. They do this with extreme skiing, snowboarding and mountaineering.”

Essentially, it’s one long ChapStick commercial. The pic is currently without a title, but they’re calling the film “Untitled Explorers Project.” Jason Dean Hall (Spread) wrote the script. There’s no word on when production might begin, but expect some extreme casting news for the extreme adventurers relatively soon.
