Every once in a while I use this space to tout a recently released Blu-ray/DVD that I missed in theaters but, via the magic of home video, was finally able to check out from the comfort of my couch (click here to see me gush about The Perks of Being a Wallflower). Today I'll do the same by encouraging you to check out co-writer/director Scott Derrickson's horror pic Sinister. There's nothing spectacular going on here, it's just an effective movie with several scenes that I found genuinely frightening/disturbing. Moreover, it's probably the last widely-released horror entry since Insidious that left me turning some of the lights on in the house shortly after it ended.
With my "Super Cool Blu-ray Pick of the Week" out of the way, this week's Top 5 includes interviews from the set of The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, some drama-inducing first set images from The Amazing Spider-Man 2, a set visit recap and interviews for Park Chan-wook's Stoker, Jack the Giant Slayer interviews, and the first trailer and poster for director James Wan's The Conjuring. As you may expect, a brief recap and link to each of these can be found completely free of charge after the jump.

All films whose premise features dueling magicians has The Prestige to thank for my time and money. Based purely on my love of that pic, every time I hear a movie plot described as "Well, it's about these rival magicians..." I interrupt with "Sweet, I love ...

[This is a re-post of my review from the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. Stoker opens today in limited release. Click here to find out when the film will be playing near you.]

In Chan-wook Park's Stoker, the hunt is more rewarding than the kill. Park has beautifully crafted an unnerving, slow-burn mystery-thriller that delves into a bloodline destined to shed blood. In his English-language debut, Park takes his immaculate yet eerie style, and uses it to enhance a relatively simple tale of a disturbed girl who begins a bizarre and disturbing relationship with her recently-discovered uncle. Through Park's lens and the tremendous performances of stars Mia Wasikowska and Matthew Goode, Stoker may not cut deep, but it slashes hard.

India Stoker (Wasikowska) is a quiet, withdrawn teenager whose father (Dermot Mulroney) dies under suspicious circumstances on her 18th birthday. At the funeral, she meets his long-lost brother Charlie (Goode), who has apparently been traveling the world for all of India's life. Charlie decides to move into the Stoker estate, and become the proverbial man of the house, which appeals to India's neglected mother, Evie (Nicole Kidman), and piques India's curiosity. As her perverse relationship with Charlie develops, India transitions towards a violent and disturbing adulthood.

The world of Stoker is as fascinating as its lead characters. The Stokers seem to exist out of time as their costumes and home have appear to date back to the 1950s, but the story takes place in the present day. The family also spends their evenings having ...

There’s just something eerie about Matthew Goode (Watchmen). It’s almost as if the poor guy is too damn good looking, his smile a little too perfect, his hair too evenly keeled and parted… There must surely be something wrong with him. If it is human instinct to weed out the proper characteristics of even the most undesirable of beings, then the opposite must also be true. One can’t help but search for any imperfection to poor ol’ Goode’s character. Behind that smile and hair, there must lurk something less. And Goode uses that to his full advantage. As the too charming, too handsome Uncle Charlie in the melodrama-masquerading-as-a-thriller Stoker, Goode revels in the malevolence hiding just underneath his pearly whites. After the sudden death of his brother, Uncle Charlie shacks up with his sibling’s widowed wife and young daughter under the guise of helping them through their grief. Of course his true intentions are far more perverse and sinister.

In the following interview with Goode, he discusses his distaste for most horror films, working with the meticulous Park Chan-Wook (Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance) and his upcoming roles in television (BBC’s Dancing on the Edge) and film (the period piece Belle). For the full interview, hit the jump.

And here are my video interviews with Nicole Kidman and Mia Wasikowska, in case you missed them.

Another clip from Park Chan-wook's Stoker has been released. In the clip, the newly-widowed Evelyn Stoker (Nicole Kidman) seduces her deceased husband's brother, Charlie (Matthew Goode), while her daughter India (Mia Wasikowska) looks on. In addition to this new clip, Fox Searchlight has released Clint Mansell's terrific score for the film, and you should definitely give it a listen.

Hit the jump to check out the clip and the score. Click here for my review of the film and click here to read about Adam's visit to the set. Stoker opens in limited release on Friday.

Score via BlackBook.

Here’s the official synopsis for Stoker:
After India’s (Wasikowska’s) father dies in an auto accident, her Uncle Charlie (Goode), who she never knew existed, comes to live with her and her emotionally unstable mother Evelyn (Kidman). Soon after his arrival, she comes to suspect this mysterious, charming man has ulterior motives, but instead of feeling outrage or horror, this friendless girl becomes increasingly infatuated with him.

It’s a breezy fall day in Nashville, Tennessee. Leaves are falling over an expansive estate that’s as haunting as it is gorgeous, and South Korean director Park Chan-wook—the man behind Oldboy, Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, Thirst, and many others—is directing his English-language feature film debut in the country music capital of the world.

In September of 2011, Collider was invited to the set of the horror drama Stoker, which stars Mia Wasikowska, Matthew Goode, Nicole Kidman, Jacki Weaver, and Dermot Mulroney. The production had opted to film most of the pic’s scenes in and around a rather gothic-looking estate in Nashville, so along with a small group of journalists, we were able to spend a day on set and to get a look at how Park Chan-wook was making his Hollywood debut. Hit the jump for my full set visit report.

As we’re walking up to the set, the first thought in my head is how strikingly beautiful the scenery is. Stoker is being filmed almost completely on this one estate on the west side of Nashville. The property has a number of houses, garages, and a grassy, tree-covered lawn that stretches as far as the eye can see. One house on the property has been chosen as the principal Stoker house for the film. Not a great amount of exterior set dressing was needed, as the white southern charm mixes perfectly with the dated and conspicuously unkempt nature of the white mansion.

The film’s production designer, Thérèse DePrez (Black Swan), informs us ...

For his English-language debut, acclaimed Korean filmmaker Chan-wook Park has crafted Stoker, a macabre coming-of-age tale set amidst the eerie, improbable and self-contained world of the Stoker family whose quiet, secluded life is suddenly shattered by a tragic accident that reveals a dark family history and lots of bad blood. Directed from a script by actor Wentworth Miller, this deliciously twisted psychological thriller with nods to Dracula and Hitchcock opens in theaters on March 1st and stars Nicole Kidman, Mia Wasikowska and Matthew Goode.

At the film’s recent press day, Kidman, Wasikowska and Goode talked about what drew them to play their unusual characters, their first impressions upon reading the script, collaborating with director Park, their most memorable moments during filming, and their reaction after seeing the completed film. Park discussed what it was like helming his first English-speaking film and how his Hollywood experience compared to directing in Korea. Kidman also commented on her upcoming role in Grace of Monaco. Hit the jump to read more.

Question: Director Park, it’s great to see your movie, which just played Sundance, and The Last Stand come out within a week of each other. How was your Hollywood experience and have you seen Kim Jee-Woon’s film?

Park Chan-wook: I haven’t seen it. It’s not been released in Korea yet. Ever since I arrived in America to promote Stoker, I haven’t had time to go and see it in a theater. The fact that I had to shoot twice as fast as I’m used to in ...

A new clip has been released from Park Chan-wook's Stoker. The film centers on a young girl (Mia Wasikowska) who encounters her mysterious uncle (Matthew Goode) while mourning the death of her father (Dermot Mulroney). This clip does a terrific job of showing off Chung-hoon Chung's gorgeous cinematography (you'll notice how this clip is done in one shot). I quite liked the film when I saw it at Sundance, and I'm looking forward to seeing it again.

Hit the jump to check out the clip. The film also stars Jacki Weaver and Nicole Kidman. Stoker opens in limited release on March 1st.

Via Fox Searchlight.

Fox Searchlight has released a batch of new images from director Park Chan-wook’s (Oldboy) English-language debut Stoker. The film centers on a young girl (Mia Wasikowska) who encounters her mysterious uncle (Matthew Goode) while mourning the death of her father (Dermot Mulroney). These images highlight Park’s colorful yet sinister imagery, teasing the curious relationship between Wasikowska, Goode, and Nicole Kidman’s characters. Matt caught the film at Sundance and really enjoyed it, calling it “an unnerving, slow-burn mystery-thriller that delves into a bloodline destined to shed blood.” Count me in.

Hit the jump to check out the new images. Stoker opens on March 1st.

Here’s the official synopsis for Stoker:
India Stoker (Mia Wasikowska) was not prepared to lose her father and best friend Richard (Dermot Mulroney) in a tragic auto accident. The solitude of her woodsy family estate, the peace of her tranquil town, and the unspoken somberness of her home life are suddenly upended by not only this mysterious accident, but by the sudden arrival of her Uncle Charlie (Matthew Goode), whom she never knew existed. When Charlie moves in with her and her emotionally unstable mother Evie (Nicole Kidman), India thinks the void left by her father's death is finally being filled by his closet bloodline. Soon after his arrival, India comes to suspect that this mysterious, charming man has ulterior motives. Yet instead of feeling outrage or horror, this friendless young woman becomes increasingly infatuated with him.

The family also spends their evenings having India play the piano for their entertainment rather than sitting in front of a screen. These trappings may not be subtle, but they're bewitching and beguiling nonetheless. Park knows he's dealing ...

While the Sundance crowd is enjoying Park Chan-wook's Stoker in its entirety, the rest of the internet is being treated to a new trailer. This sixty-second cut plays up the film's weirdness, eroticism and outright violence in time with an overt bit of music that's just as strange. It's reminiscent of the trailers for Requiem for a Dream and the more recent Savages from Oliver Stone. It's a nice tonal introduction for a film from the director of Oldboy.

Starring Mia Wasikowska, Nicole Kidman and Matthew Goode, Stoker opens in limited release on March 1st. Hit the jump to watch the new trailer.

Here’s the synopsis for Stoker:

Soon after his arrival, she comes to suspect this mysterious, charming man has ulterior motives, but instead of feeling outrage or horror, this friendless girl becomes increasingly infatuated with him.

One of my most anticipated films of next spring is Park Chan-Wook's Stoker. The film centers on a young girl (Mia Wasikowska) who encounters her mysterious uncle (Matthew Goode) while mourning the death of her father (Dermot Mulroney). The promo trailer shows the creation of the eye-catching first poster, and is set to the song "Becomes The Color" by Emily Wells, which will play over the film's closing credits. It's a creepy song, and while it doesn't work quite as well as the music used in the international trailer ("Dirge" by Death in Vegas), it gets the job done.

Hit the jump to check out the video and poster. The film also stars Nicole Kidman, Jacki Weaver, Lucas Till, and Alden Ehrenreich. Stoker opens March 1, 2013.

An international trailer for Park Chan-wook's Stoker has gone online. Like the first trailer that debuted last week, this one is dark, creepy, unsettling, and absolutely fascinating. The film centers on a young girl (Mia Wasikowska) who encounters her mysterious uncle (Matthew Goode) while mourning the death of her father (Dermot Mulroney). The plot seems to have a mix of Lolita and The Professional, although it's not paid assassinations as much as serial killing (money makes all the difference!). There are also some strange layers going on between the girl and her mother (Nicole Kidman). Even though I've now seen two trailers for the movie, I still have no idea what to expect, and that makes me very excited to see it.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer. The film also stars Jacki Weaver, Lucas Till, and Alden Ehrenreich. Stoker opens on March 1st, 2013.

Via Empire.

Here's the official synopsis for Stoker:
After India’s (Wasikowska’s) father dies in an auto accident, her Uncle Charlie (Goode), who she never knew existed, comes to live with her and her emotionally unstable mother (Kidman). Soon after his arrival, she comes to suspect this mysterious, charming man has ulterior motives, but instead of feeling outrage or horror, this friendless girl becomes increasingly infatuated with him.

The first trailer for Oldboy director Park Chan-wook's English-language debut Stoker has been released. The film centers on a young girl (Mia Wasikowska) who encounters her mysterious uncle (Matthew Goode) while mourning the death of her father (Dermot Mulroney). Chan-wook's signature lush visual palette is on full display in this trailer, along with a wonderful air of creepiness and foreboding. There's promise of some strong performances from the whole cast, especially Nicole Kidman as Wasikowska's wary mother, and the tone is downright chilling. I can't tell if the trailer gives too much away or if it's a great tease of the film's atmosphere, but this looks like a great way for Chan-wook to make his American debut.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The film stars Jackie Weaver, Lucas Till, and Alden Ehrenreich. Stoker opens on March 1st, 2013.

Oldboy director Chan-wook Park has been in the news quite a bit lately, attaching himself to helm a violent Western called The Brigands of Rattleborge and a 1930s crime drama Corsica 72, but his English-language debut is already in the can and set for a March 2013 release. Stoker centers a young girl (Mia Wasikowska) who encounters her mysterious uncle (Matthew Goode) while mourning the death of her father (Dermot Mulroney). The cast is led by Nicole Kidman as the girl’s mother, and the chilling first footage from the pic has landed online by way of an ET preview. I expected a blend of horror and drama, and that’s exactly what Park has delivered based on this snippet of footage. We look to be in for strong performances from Kidman and Wasikowska, and I can’t wait to see more from the film when a full trailer lands online.

Hit the jump to watch the footage. The film also stars Jackie Weaver, Lucas Till, and Alden Ehrenreich. Stoker opens on March 1st, 2013.

We were starting to wonder when Stoker, the English-language debut from Oldboy director Chan-wook Park, would get released. The film went in front of cameras last September, and we haven't heard anything about it since. Today, word comes that Stoker will open March 1, 2013. The plot centers on a young girl (Mia Wasikowska) who encounters her mysterious uncle (Matthew Goode) while mourning her death of her father (Dermot Mulroney). The impressive cast also includes Nicole Kidman, Jackie Weaver, Lucas Till, and Alden Ehrenreich. I've been told that the movie could be described as a horror, a thriller, a drama, or a combination of all three, so it will be interesting to see how Fox Searchlight plans to sell it.

It won't be an easy sell in a crowded March 2013, which could almost pass for a summer month with the amount of heavy-hitters it has on hand. Stoker will be sharing its weekend with Neill Blomkamp's District 9 follow-up, Elysium, which stars Matt Damon and Jodie Foster. Even if Stoker does well, it will be tough to have legs in a month that also includes Oz the Great and Powerful, Now You See Me, the remake of Carrie, the Tom Hanks drama Captain Phillips, DreamWorks Animation's The Croods, Jack the Giant Killer, and the delayed 3D release of G.I. Joe: Retaliation. [Update: We've been sent official word regarding the release date, which comes with an official synopsis. Read it after the jump.]

Following the two casting stories we had for you this morning, we now have a few more this afternoon. First up, The Killing star Mireille Enos' may land another high-profile gig after signing on to co-star in World War Z earlier this year. THR reports that Enos is in talks to play the wife of Josh Brolin's character in Ruben Fleischer's period crime drama Gangster Squad. Brolin plays John O'Mara, one of the few good cops not on the payroll of crime boss Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) in 1940s Los Angeles. If she signs on, "Enos will play O’Mara’s wife, who is afraid her husband may die while in the line of duty but still helps him pick his squad. The film's impressive cast also includes Ryan Gosling, Michael Pena, Anthony Mackie, and Giovanni Ribisi. Emma Stone is also in talks to join the film.

Twitch reports that Matthew Goode (Watchmen) and Lucas Till (X-Men: First Class) have joined the cast of Park Chan-wook's Stoker. We previously reported that Goode was in talks to star but now he's confirmed to play the estranged, mysterious uncle of a young girl (Mia Wasikowska) who arrives after the death of her father. Till will play a "thuggish schoolmate" of Wasikowska's character. The film also stars Nicole Kidman, Alden Ehrenreich (Tetro), and Jackie Weaver (Animal Kingdom). Prison Break star Wentworth Miller wrote the script, which landed on last year's Black List, under the pseudonym ...

Matthew Goode (Watchmen) is in talks to land the male lead in director Chan-wook Park's (Oldboy) drama Stoker. Already starring Nicole Kidman and Mia Wasikowska, the project was penned by actor Wentworth Miller (Prison Break) and centers on a young girl (Wasikowska) who encounters her mysterious uncle while mourning her father's death. Variety reports that Goode's negotiations are for the role of said "mysterious uncle," a part previously courted by the likes of Colin Firth, James Franco, Michael Fassbender, and Joel Edgerton. Stoker is housed at Fox Searchlight and will mark the English-language debut for Chan-wook Park. Tony and Ridley Scott will produce the pic under their Scott Free moniker. As for Goode, "Ozymandias" himself can next be seen in the "romantic dramady" Burning Man from director Jonathan Teplitzky.

Julie Andrews, Gemma Arterton, Matthew Goode, and Gabriel Byrne have signed on to star in an adaptation of the Agatha Christie novel Crooked House. In the murder mystery is set against "the backdrop of three generations of a family that lives together in a large and seemingly crooked house." Every member of the eccentric family has motive to have killed the multimillionaire patriarch, Aristide Leonide. Neil LaBute (Death at a Funeral) will direct from a script by Julian Fellowes (The Tourist) and Tim Rose Price (The Serpent's Kiss). The $20 million production is scheduled to shoot this summer in the U.K. The story calls for a large ensemble, so expect more casting notices in the near future. Andrews, Goode, and Byrne -- and sure, let's throw in the lovely Arterton -- is a very good start.

Read a quote from LaBute and the full book synopsis after the jump.

LaBute told Variety:
"The story has a couple of fresh sides to it that I didn't remember from Christie's work. There's a love story, which didn't feature strongly in many of her books, so that seemed very different to me and fresh. Plus it's quite morally ambiguous, which also appealed to me."

This is one of two Christie stories in development. Disney is working on a wild reinvention of the elderly detective Miss Marple, aging the character down to the point that Jennifer Garner will star.

Two months after his Dune adaptation collapsed, Taken director Pierre Morel has set up his next movie as a producer, the action thriller Overdrive. Variety reports Alex Pettyfer (I Am Number Four) and Matthew Goode (Leap Year) as "a pair of handsome and adventurous brothers, known for being high-profile car thieves, who travel to the South of France looking for new challenges and come across a tough local crime boss." Antonio Negret, the Colombian filmmaker who just finished shooting Transit, will direct Overdrive. Michael Brandt and Derek Haas (Wanted) will write the script. The $30 million production should get in front of cameras later this summer for a planned summer 2012 release.

Read quotes from the producers after the jump.

Kinology head Gregoire Melin remarked:
"Overdrive is an action flick with brains and a great dose of humor, mixing elements of Point Break and The Hangover."

I'm a big fan of "____ meets _____" comparisons. This one is pretty great, equal parts unhelpful and ridiculous.

Morel launched his production company Elastic Collision earlier this year. Overdrive will be the first film at Elastic:
"I've been looking a long time for the right project to make my producing debut. When I read Derek and Michael's script, I knew this was the perfect vehicle, in which I could input all the experience I had gathered over the years."

Morel, who made his name as a director of photography, will serve as the action and art supervisor. ...
