First Full Trailer for LEGENDS OF OZ: DOROTHY’S RETURN

The first theatrical trailer for the upcoming animated film Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return (previously titled Dorothy of Oz) has been released online.  Based on the 1989 novel Dorothy of Oz, a sequel to Frank L. Baum’s original The Wizard of Oz, the new film revolves around Dorothy (Lea Michele) returning to the Land of Oz, only to find that the kingdom and its inhabitants are in grave danger from a wicked Jester (Martin Short).  The pic looks more like a direct-to-DVD sequel than a major theatrical release, but youngsters will probably enjoy the whimsical tone and goofy characters.  It’s a far cry from the oddly dark Oz sequel that terrorized me as a child, Return to Oz.

Following the success (commercially, that is) of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, director Rob Marshall was mulling a couple of projects as his follow-up.  After his remake of The Thin Man with Johnny Depp was put on hold, the Chicago director set his sights on returning to the world of song and dance for his next film.  Marshall is prepping an adaptation of the fairy tale-themed musical Into the Woods for Disney, and he recently held a star-studded screenplay read that included the likes of Anna Kendrick, Patrick Wilson, Allison Janney, and many more.  Additionally, it sounds like he may have settled on Meryl Streep for the lead role of the Witch.

The first trailer for the animated feature Dorothy of Oz has been released.  The CG-animated musical centers on Dorothy (Lea Michele) returning to the Land of Oz, only to find that the kingdom and its inhabitants are in grave danger from a wicked Jester (Martin Short).  The low-budget film comes from the studio Summertime Entertainment, and the visuals are sadly a far cry from Pixar or DreamWorks Animation.  That said, the colorfulness and strange cast of characters would have been a big pull for me as a kid so maybe this will play better to younger audiences.  The film is almost reminiscent of the dark and twisted unofficial sequel Return to Oz, but with decidedly more singing/Broadway stars.

Jennifer Hudson to Star in Second Season of NBC’s SMASH

Oscar-winner Jennifer Hudson (Dreamgirls) will star in a multi-episode arc in the upcoming second season of NBC’s Smash. That will make two American Idol alumnae appearing on the show as star Katharine McPhee is also set to return.  Hudson will play Veronica Moore, a Tony Award-winning Broadway star whose presence impacts the lives of Karen (McPhee) and Ivy (Megan Hilty).   Smash, a Television Critics Award nominee for Best New Program, needs to recoup some losses after axing a good portion of the cast earlier this year.  Hudson is certainly a worthwhile addition, even if it’s only for a short time.  Hit the jump for more on Hudson and the second season of Smash.

On the NBC musical drama series Smash, Karen (Katharine McPhee) and Ivy (Megan Hilty) have aligned as frenemies, but their newly formed friendship will soon be put to the test when the Marilyn Monroe musical moves to Boston for its first out-of-town performance in front of a real audience.  While the big lingering question is, “Will Bombshell be a smash?,” Karen and Ivy will be experiencing as much drama off stage as on.

During this recent interview to promote the show, co-stars Katharine McPhee and Megan Hilty talked about what they like and don’t like about their characters, whether or not they think Karen and Ivy can maintain their newfound friendship, how long movie star Uma Thurman will be sticking around, how fans respond to the show and their characters, the reaction from the Broadway community, that this season will end on multiple cliffhangers, and how they expect to resume shooting for Season 2 in mid-July.  Check out what they had to say after the jump:

First Footage from Animated DOROTHY OF OZ; Plus a Clip of Lea Michele Singing as Dorothy

Every young girl who grows up dreaming of musicals idolizes Judy Garland, so it’s no surprise the animated Wizard of Oz re-imagining Dorothy of Oz lured so many notable Broadway starlets.  Lea Michele is Dorothy, Megan Hilty is China Princess, and Bernadette Peters is Glinda the Good Witch.  In an early featurette, the trio each get a chance to explain how excited to work with each other in an Oz movie.  We even get an extended listen to Michele’s showcase, “When the World Turns Upside Down.”  But the real treat for those out of us outside the Broadway loop is a first look at footage from the movie.  Well, “treat” may be a strong word.  The low-budget CG from new studio Summertime Entertainment is not as immaculate as one might hope for when animating the classic fantasy.  But there’s still time to polish the visuals before the TBD release, and plenty of opportunity to make up for a lack of funds with the storytelling or, naturally, the songs.  Check out the sneak peek for yourself after the jump.

NBC Renews SMASH for a Second Season

Look out Glee! NBC’s gamble on their more mature, and far superior musical series Smash from producer Steven Spielberg seems to have paid off. The network has just revealed that the Broadway centric drama series has been given an order for a second season as it’s currently NBC’s top drama amongst the all-important 18-49 demographic. With Glee waning in its presentation nearly every single episode, I’ve found myself absolutely enthralled with this new series, currently focusing on the development of a Marilyn Monroe based musical and a great competition between Katharine McPhee and Megan Hilty for stardom.

While the cover songs in the series may not be as fun or catchy as those on Glee, it’s the original songs from the musical in progress that really keep my attention. Frankly, I couldn’t be more excited to hear that NBC is sticking with the series for at least one more season and I can’t wait to see where it goes. Now if we could only get some more attention to NBC’s other mind-blowing drama Awake, then I’d be the happiest viewer in all the land. Hit the jump for the full press release.
