THE EXPENDABLES 3 Review

the-expendables-3-review

The Expendables movies have never really thought beyond their casts.  The thinking has apparently been: “We’ve got classic action heroes, some new blood, and we shoot stuff.  The end.”  It’s been an action franchise without any memorable action, and a big cast of likable actors devoid of almost any charisma.  Although there’s something admirable in how the franchise has sought to be lo-tech in comparisons to today’s CG-loaded blockbusters, it rarely tries to even match the likable characters of those blockbusters.  The Expendables 3 is the same old bag of tricks, and while there’s a hint of passing the torch to a younger generation, Sylvester Stallone and his co-writers Creighton Rothenberger and Katrin Benedikt have no intention of really moving forward.  The cast just got bigger, the action remains bloated and unimpressive, and only magnetic performances from Mel Gibson and Antonio Banderas manage to break through this tired series.

Let me be very clear: press conferences for a film with the entire cast on hand are usually a waste of time.  All too often, the biggest star gets most of the questions and because it’s a press conference with numerous reporters asking questions, it’s hard to get into a rhythm with the talent.  But every once in awhile you get lucky, and that was the case the other day with The Expendables 3 cast and director Patrick Hughes in Los Angeles.  While the talent on stage almost equaled the amount of reporters in the room (I’m only slightly exaggerating), the entire event was filled with laughs, smart questions, and everyone on stage had a chance to shine, which is not terribly different from the movie they were there to promote.  Like I said on TwitterThe Expendables 3 is a lot of fun and my favorite of the series due in large part to Mel GibsonWesley Snipes and Antonio Banderas.  All three are awesome and Banderas steals every scene he’s in.  In addition to the new cast additions, The Expendables 3 has a crazy third act that’s easily the best action scene of the franchise.  If you liked the first two, you’ll love the third one.

During the press conference – which featured Sylvester Stallone, Gibson, Snipes, Kelsey Grammer, Jason StathamDolph LundgrenRandy CoutureTerry Crews, Kellan LutzRonda RouseyVictor OrtizGlen Powell and Patrick Hughes – they talked about doing the stunts, future installments in the series, the Stallone vs. Gibson fight scene, Stallone’s thoughts on facing Sin City 2 at the box office, why Jackie Chan wasn’t in the movie, what went on between the takes, and so much more.  Hit the jump to either read or listen to the press conference.

Final THE EXPENDABLES 3 Trailer: Mel Gibson Kidnaps the Lil Expendables

Amidst a disheartening piracy situation, Lionsgate has released the final The Expendables 3 trailer for director Patrick Hughes’ action sequel.  This time around, Sylvester Stallone and his gang of geriatric action stars must band together to save their protégés, who have been kidnapped by an evil nemesis played by Mel Gibson.  By now you’re well aware of whether this franchise is for you or not, but if you plan on seeing it, I ask that you refrain from being lazy or self-involved and actually pay for a ticket.  Piracy is not only bad for the movie business, it’s bad for the filmmaking community as a whole.  Whatever the quality of the final product, a significant amount of time and money was invested into making this movie a reality, so the least you could do is pony up $10 of your own money to check it out.

THE EXPENDABLES 3 Character Posters Get Colorful

Ahead of San Diego Comic-Con this weekend, Lionsgate has unveiled a collection of The Expendables 3 characters posters, and they’re a bit, um, different.  Instead of the grit and grime of all the other marketing for the action franchise, these new posters go the opposite route and paint Sylvester Stallone, Harrison Ford, and Co. in some bright primary colors.  I’m not sure these posters are “good” necessarily, but it’s certainly a welcome change from the bland marketing thus far.  If only the actual films were this lively.

THE EXPENDABLES 3 Gets a Combustible Motion Poster and a New TV Spot

Confession time.  I’ve never seen an Expendables movie.  But since I’m fairly certain I’ll be covering director Patrick Hughes‘ The Expendables 3 in some capacity this summer, maybe I’ll grab a few beers and make time for the first two installments sometime soon.  How can I not prepare myself fully for a film where Mel Gibson plays a character named Conrad Stonebanks?  To that effect, we’ve got a new motion poster for the film that features some fancy cigar action and a hell of a billing block.

Opening August 15th, the film stars Sylvester StalloneHarrison FordWesley SnipesArnold SchwarzeneggerKelsey Grammer, Antonio BanderasJason StathamJet LiDolph LundgrenRandy CoutureTerry CrewsKellan LutzRonda RouseyVictor Ortiz, and Glen Powell. New THE EXPENDABLES 3 Trailer and Banner Starring Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Wesley Snipes, Mel Gibson, and Many More

Expendables_3_Banner_poster

Lionsgate has released a new The Expendables 3 trailer and banner.  The follow-up finds Sylvester Stallone’s Barney Ross and his Expendables crew squaring off against Ross’ old partner Conrad Stonebanks, played by Mel Gibson.  This trailer is exactly what we’ve come to expect from an Expendables movie at this point.  You’re either in or you’re out, and there’s no changing the formula, only the cast members.  This new trailer gives more attention to new additions such as Wesley Snipes, Antonio Banderas, Kelsey Grammer, and Gibson, but not too much since we also have to see lots of explosions and shooting lest we fear those elements may not be part of the film.  At this point, “Explosions” and “Shooting” should get their own character posters, top billing, and a chance to walk the red carpet.

Hit the jump to check out the new The Expendables 3 trailer.  The film opens August 15th, and also stars Harrison Ford Arnold SchwarzeneggerJason StathamJet LiDolph LundgrenRandy CoutureTerry CrewsKellan LutzRonda RouseyVictor Ortiz, and Glen Powell.

Watch a Roll Call for THE EXPENDABLES 3 Starring Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and a Bunch of Other Tough Guys

Lionsgate has released a roll call/teaser trailer for The Expendables 3.  While this footage bills this outing as the “last” time, I have trouble believing that.  But that’s a concern for the future.  Right now, this teaser provides the first footage from the movie (explosions!), and mostly provides a roll call of the many, many tough guys (and gal) populating the movie.  But that’s fine since The Expendables movies are more about a stacked cast than anything else.

Hit the jump to check out the The Expendables 3 teaser trailer, and click here to see some of the character posters/glamour shots.  The film stars (deep breath) Sylvester Stallone, Mel Gibson, Harrison Ford, Wesley Snipes, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Kelsey Grammer, Antonio Banderas, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Terry Crews, Kellan Lutz, Ronda Rousey, Victor Ortiz, and Glen PowellThe Expendables 3 opens August 15th.

First Teaser Trailer for THE EXPENDABLES 3

Lionsgate has released a teaser trailer for director Patrick Hughes’ action sequel The Expendables 3.  The follow-up finds Sylvester Stallone’s Barney Ross and his Expendables crew squaring off against Ross’ old partner Conrad Stonebanks, played by Mel Gibson.  There’s no hint of that story in this first teaser trailer as the cast is simply too large to give everyone screentime in the time allotted.  Taking that into account, everyone and their mother is wheeled out to strike an action pose in what’s essentially a cast introduction.

Hit the jump to watch the teaser trailer.  The film also stars Wesley Snipes, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Kelsey Grammer, Antonio Banderas, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Terry Crews, Kellan Lutz, Ronda Rousey, Victor Ortiz, and Glen PowellThe Expendables 3 opens on August 15, 2014.

With director Patrick Hughes’ The Expendables 3 due August 15, 2014, I’d imagine we’re getting close to seeing the first trailer/footage from the film.  As most of you know, the next installment has Sylvester Stallone’s Barney Ross and his Expendables crew squaring off against Ross’ old partner Conrad Stonebanks, played by Mel Gibson.  Returning for the sequel are Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Terry Crews and Arnold Schwarzenegger, with Wesley Snipes, Antonio Banderas, and Harrison Ford joining the all-star cast along with Kellan Lutz, MMA star Ronda Rousey, welterweight boxing champion Victor Ortiz and Glen Powell.  No matter what you think of The Expendables franchise, you have to admit it’s a hell of a cast, and one I can’t wait to see kicking ass next summer.

So while we wait for the first footage to hit, we were sent a promo poster which you can check out after the jump.  It’s got the tag line, “Never send a boy to do a man’s job.”

Ten new images have been released from Robert Rodriguez’ Machete Kills.  The film centers on Machete’s (Danny Trejo) quest to stop an eccentric billionaire arms dealer who has plans to spread war and anarchy across the planet.   Judging by what we’ve seen so far, it looks like more of the same, so if you liked the original Machete, then Machete Kills should be right up your alley of violence and mayhem.  The movie is set to screen this evening as the opener of Fantastic Fest 2013, so expect some reactions to start hitting the Internet later tonight.

A new red-band trailer for director Robert Rodriguez’s upcoming sequel Machete Kills has been released online, and it’s just the right amount of silly.  The film centers on Machete’s (Danny Trejo) quest to stop an eccentric billionaire arms dealer who has plans to spread war and anarchy across the planet.  The trailer shows off plenty of unbridled carnage at the hands of Trejo’s Machete, but we also get to see more of Mel Gibson’s villainous character, who describes himself as a “fucker-people-upper.”  It remains to be seen whether the film will be fun and absurd rather than just absurd, but it looks like we’ll get to see one hell of a Mel Gibson performance regardless.

Today’s pleasant surprise is brought to you by Robert Rodriguez’s Machete Kills.  We have 11 new images and one wacky poster from the upcoming sequel that show off the cast’s crazy looks while only hinting at the insanity that’s sure to come.  On display are the title hero, Danny Trejo himself, in addition to Amber Heard, Michelle Rodriguez, Antonio Banderas, Mel Gibson, Charlie Sheen and Jesse James.  Sadly, no new looks at Sofia Vergara or Alexa Vega, but beggars can’t be choosers.

THE EXPENDABLES 3 Begins Filming; Synopsis Released; Cage, Chan, Rourke, and Jovovich Absent from Cast List

Lionsgate and Millennium Films have announced that principal photography on The Expendables 3 has begun in Bulgaria and at Nu Boyana Studios in Sofia.  The upcoming film pits Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone) and his team against his old partner Conrad Stonebanks (Mel Gibson).  Stonebanks is out for revenge, and so Barney must round-up a gang of younger team members to join the Expendables.  This is an odd synopsis considering that the high-profile new names are veterans Wesley Snipes, Antonio Banderas, and Harrison Ford.  The younger additions consist of Kellan Lutz, Glen Powell, MMA fighter Ronda Rousey, and boxing champion Victor Ortiz.  The most notable aspect of the press release is the omissions.  Deadline had previously reported that Nicolas Cage, Jackie Chan, and Milla Jovovich were on board, but they’re not mentioned in this press release.  Additionally, Stallone had said that Mickey Rourke would return, but he’s also absent.  Perhaps their roles were…dispensable.

Hit the jump for the press release.  The Expendables 3 is due out August 15, 2014.

Mel Gibson and Antonio Banderas Confirmed for THE EXPENDABLES 3

by     Posted 1 year, 18 days ago

The cast for The Expendables 3 continues to take shape.  A few days ago, Sylvester Stallone revealed that Bruce Willis was out of the film, but that Harrison Ford had now joined the cast.  Today, The Wrap reports that Mel Gibson has been confirmed to play the baddie in the pic and Antonio Banderas has signed on to join the action ensemble.  Gibson was previously rumored to play the film’s antagonist after Stallone initially reached out to him about possibly directing, and now it appears that the deal has been closed.  There’s no firm word on who Banderas will be playing, but one assumes it’ll be a middle-aged character proficient in badassery.

Red Hill director Patrick Hughes is taking the helm this time around, and other cast members include Jackie Chan, Wesley Snipes, Kellan Lutz, and Milla JovovoichThe Expendables 3 opens in theaters on August 15, 2014.
