After a couple sneak peeks, a full trailer has been unveiled for Steven Soderbergh’s Behind the Candelabra. The film stars Michael Douglas as the famous musician Liberace and Matt Damon as his lover Scott Thorson. The plot centers on the tempestuous relationship between the two throughout their secretive five-year love affair that began in 1977. Judging by the new trailer, the story seems to be heavily from Thorson’s perspective as he took a unique relationship with Liberace. It’s intriguing. Not quite as intriguing as Rob Lowe‘s hairstyle, but close.

Before tonight’s season premiere of Game of Thrones, HBO aired a brief new trailer for Steven Soderbergh‘s ultimate film before retirement, Behind the Candelabra. The film stars Michael Douglas as the famous musician Liberace and Matt Damon as his lover Scott Thorson. The story centers on the tempestuous relationship between the two throughout their secretive five-year love affair that began in 1977. Like the teaser trailer, the tone is fun, but this time we’re getting our first footage from the picture, and I like the look of the flamboyant hair and costumes.

HBO has released the teaser trailer for Steven Soderbergh’s final film before retirement, Behind the Candelabra. The film stars Michael Douglas as the famous musician Liberace and Matt Damon as his lover Scott Thorson. The story centers on the tempestuous relationship between the two throughout their secretive five-year love affair that began in 1977. Judging by the teaser trailer, there’s a fairly cheeky tone, which isn’t too surprising when you consider Liberace’s flamboyant personality and charm.

Director Steven Soderbergh’s psychological thriller Side Effects opens in theaters this Friday, but the filmmaker also has another (possibly final) film set for release in 2013 as well: the Liberace movie Behind the Candelabra. HBO has now unveiled the first official image from the pic, giving us a look at Michael Douglas as Liberace and Matt Damon as his lover Scott Thorson. The story centers on the tempestuous relationship between the two throughout their secretive five-year love affair that began in 1977. We’ve yet to see a trailer, but I’m inclined to say that Candelabra will be a lot of fun given the talent both onscreen and behind the camera.
Hit the jump to check out the image and an official synopsis, and if you missed any portions of Steve’s recent interview with Soderbergh, click here. Behind the Candelabra will premiere on HBO in May.

New images have been released for the comedies The Incredible Burt Wonderstone and Last Vegas. Wonderstone stars Steve Carell as the eponymous magician whose relationship with his partner (Steve Buscemi) becomes strained after the arrival of a hipper illusionist (Jim Carrey). The script comes from Horrible Bosses screenwriters John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein so I’ve got high hopes. As for Last Vegas (a.k.a. “The Hangover with old guys”), the movie centers on four old friends (played by Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro, Kevin Kline, and Morgan Freeman) who decide to throw a Las Vegas bachelor party for the only one of them who has remained single.
Hit the jump to check out the images. The Incredible Burt Wonderstone opens March 15, 2013. Last Vegas opens December 20, 2013.

The first image from the “The Hangover with old guys” comedy Last Vegas has been released on the heels of the official start of production. The story centers on four old friends who decide to throw a Las Vegas bachelor party for the only one of them who has remained single. Jon Turtletaub (National Treasure) directs the rather impressive cast that includes Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro, Kevin Kline, and Morgan Freeman. Filming has now begun in Las Vegas (though this first image is horribly photoshopped) and will continue in Atlanta. The cast will be doing location shooting in Vegas on the strip and at Aria Resort & Casino.
Hit the jump to check out the first image and to read the full press release. The film also stars Mary Steenburgen, Jerry Ferrara (Entourage), Romany Malco (The 40-Year-Old Virgin), and Roger Bart (Political Animals). Last Vegas opens on December 20th, 2013.

Criterion always delights, and recently they’ve put out two cult classics: David Fincher’s The Game, and Franc Roddam’s Quadrophenia. The former stars Michael Douglas and Sean Penn and came between Se7en and Fight Club in Fincher’s career, and as he made it for a studio (Gramercy) that wasn’t long for distribution it led to it having a tortured home video history – hence it’s cult status. The latter features a soundtrack by The Who, but didn’t star them, so it’s known mostly by fans of the band. Our reviews of both movies on Blu-ray follow after the jump.

We’ve got a couple of “promising duos” casting stories to report this afternoon. First up, Michael Douglas and Diane Keaton are attached to star in the comedy And So It Goes…. Per Deadline, Douglas will play “a self-absorbed and eccentric” realtor who is thrown for a loop when his estranged son saddles him with a granddaughter Douglas’ character never knew. He enlists the help of his “determined and loveable neighbor,” played by Keaton, who pulls him out of his selfish life. Mark Andrus (As Good As It Gets) wrote the script and PJ Hogan (My Best Friend’s Wedding) is set to direct, with production slated to get underway in the spring.

Already set to play Liberace in the Steven Soderbergh biopic Behind the Candelabra as well as star in the upcoming comedy Last Vegas, a busy Michael Douglas has added a third major role to his slate by signing on to play the former actor who became the 40th U.S. President, Ronald Reagan in Reykjavik. Director Mike Newell (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) is likely to take on the film that was once a Ridley Scott-led project.
Reykjavik takes place in 1986 during the time Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev went to the Icelandic capital to work out a peace deal, with the devastating backdrop of Chernobyl. (Gorbechev has not yet been cast). For more on the film, hit the jump.

We’ve got an odd assortment of images for you to check out today, starting with Matt Damon and Michael Douglas in costume for Behind the Candelabra, the Liberace biopic from director Steven Soderbergh. Douglas stars as the late pianist and vocalist while Damon plays his lover, Scott Thorson. The picture, produced by Jerry Weintraub, will debut on HBO before moving to a theatrical release. The picture also stars Rob Lowe, Dan Aykroyd, Debbie Reynolds, and Scott Bakula.
We’ve also got a new shot of Richard Armitage (Captain America: The First Avenger) in costume as Thorin Oakenshield, the leader of the dwarves in the upcoming The Hobbit trilogy from director Peter Jackson. Hit the jump to check out all the images.

The first image from the set of what may or may not be Steven Soderbergh’s last film has a director has landed online. His pre-sabbatical pic is a biopic of famed artist Liberace that he’s been developing for quite some time, and we now get our first look at Michael Douglas as the flamboyant pianist and Matt Damon as his lover Scott Thorson in Behind the Candelabra. The scene in question seems to be from Liberace’s earlier years given Douglas’ hair color, but the two actors definitely have the 70s look down.
Produced by Jerry Weintraub, Behind the Candelabra is skipping the theatrical route and will make its debut on HBO. The impressive ensemble cast includes Rob Lowe, Dan Aykroyd, Debbie Reynolds, and Scott Bakula. I’m eager to see what kind of tone Soderbergh has settled on and whether we’re in for a straightforward biopic or something a bit different. Knowing Soderbergh it’s most likely the latter, which is a very good thing. Hit the jump to check out the image.

It’s been a long time coming, but director David Fincher’s 1997 thriller The Game is finally headed to Criterion later this year. Fincher previously talked about the release in an interview with Steve in 2010, and he stated that the hold-up was probably his fault as he still needed to look at the full cut before it could be released. The wait is finally over, as Criterion announced that the disc will hit DVD and Blu-ray on September 25th of this year. Included is a new, restored digital transfer supervised by Fincher and director of photography Harris Savides, an alternate 5.1 surround audio mix, commentary by Fincher, Savides and star Michael Douglas, and much more.
The Game is quite the twisted thriller, and while it’s not my favorite Fincher film it’s definitely worth checking out. Hit the jump to check out the Criterion cover (in keeping with Fincher’s other Criterion discs, it’s black), a full list of features and the trailer for the film.

Memorial Day is a holiday meant to honor the American soldiers who lost their lives in military service and to remind us all of their sacrifice. Some Hollywood A-listers thought that the best way to show their support would be to literally turn their backs on them. In this misguided attempt at drumming up awareness and support for veterans returning home and looking for jobs, celebrities such as Tom Hanks, Michael Douglas, Milla Jovovich and Bradley Cooper put their backs to the camera while talking to our nation’s service men and women. I’m not blaming the celebrities for going along with this ridiculous gimmick, but rather the person who thought “I’ve got your six,” is an acceptable tagline while overlooking the metaphor of “turning your back on someone.” The message is great, one that we should all remember, this weekend and every weekend; it’s just the delivery that’s unintentionally silly and borders on insulting. Hit the jump to check it out.

Steven Soderbergh approached Haywire as a chance to turn Gina Carano into a movie star. As she’s been cast in the next Fast and Furious movie, it’s likely that we’ll see more from her. But Soderbergh approached doing an action movie as an art project, so he played with the structure and style of the modern action film. It’s ambitious, and not entirely successful. But he was right on the money that Carano can carry a movie. Haywire costars Michael Fassbender, Channing Tatum, Ewan McGreggor, Michael Douglas, Antonio Banderas and Bill Paxton, and our review of the Blu-ray follows after the jump.
