Michael K. Williams Says Frank Grillo May Return for THE PURGE 3; Carmen Ejogo is Ready to Move on to New Things

The Purge 3 was officially announced back in October, but other than the fact that it’s happening, we know nothing about what’s to come in the new installment.  The Purge: Anarchy ditched the Sandin family from the 2013 original, so will The Purge 3 feature a brand new group of main players trying to survive the night while crime is legal for 12 hours?  It certainly could happen, but it also seems unlikely that James DeMonaco would introduce Carmelo and his anti-Purge group for no reason.

Michael K. Williams has previously said that he thinks he’s bringing back his character for The Purge 3, but while promoting his upcoming film The Gambler, he told me that another Purge: Anarchy star might be joining him.  Hit the jump for more.

THE GAMBLER Red-Band Trailer and Poster: John Goodman Has Some Choice Words of Caution for Mark Wahlberg

Paramount Pictures has released the first The Gambler red-band trailer for director Rupert Wyatt’s (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) remake of the 1974 drama, which was written by Oscar-winning The Departed scribe William Monahan.  The film stars Mark Wahlberg as a literature professor whose gambling spirals out of control, affecting both himself and those around him.  This is very much a teaser, as it’s essentially a sweaty onslaught of footage anchored by some excellent, expletive-filled dialogue from John Goodman, but it’s a really solid first look at the film.  Wyatt appears to be tapping into the anxiety and stretched-thin nature of Wahlberg’s lead character with his visual take on the film, and I’ve gotta say it’s really promising stuff.  I look forward to getting a better read on the movie when the theatrical trailer arrives, but for now this is a very swell tease.

Watch the first The Gambler red-band trailer and check out the first poster after the jump.  The film also stars Brie Larson, Jessica Lange, John Goodman, and Michael K. WilliamsThe Gambler opens in limited release on December 19th and expands wide on January 2, 2015.

Even though it wasn’t a ratings success when it was on the air, the HBO drama series The Wire will clearly be remembered as one of the best TV shows ever made.  Throughout its run, it showcased great acting performances and great writing, through some of the most provocative storytelling that continues to challenge viewers, as they discover it.

As part of PaleyFest NY, which is considered the ultimate TV fan festival, co-stars Wendell Pierce (“Detective William ‘Bunk’ Moreland”), Sonja Sohn (“Detective Shakima ‘Kima’ Greggs”) and Michael K. Williams (“Omar Little”), along with show creator David Simon and Executive Producer Nina Noble, shared great behind-the-scenes stories and talked about what it’s like to have worked on this show in relative obscurity and have it since go on to be something that so many people love, why they think the show has not only endured but also built in esteem and awareness since it was on, when they realized they were a part of something special, how their relationship with the city of Baltimore changed over the course of the production, letting the actors know about their character’s fate, death being ever-present, why the show ended exactly where it did, and the questions that this show raised for people.  Check out what they had to say after the jump.

After the New York Film Festival screening of Inherent Vice, writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson and a good deal of his cast took the stage for a brief Q&A.  At one point, Anderson discussed Howard HawksThe Big Sleep and noted, “I saw The Big Sleep and it made me realize, I could not follow any of it and it didn’t matter because I just wanted to see what was gonna happen next.”  Anderson does manage to achieve that to a degree in Inherent Vice, but it winds up making the film even more of a disappointment because what happens next is rarely satisfying.

We’ve been talking about a possible Black Panther movie for quite some time now, but as far as we know, there hasn’t been much movement on the project yet.  However, while discussing his upcoming release, Kill The Messenger, Michael K. Williams expressed interest in taking the role of T’Challa if the movie actually happens.

According to Marvel’s character description, Black Panther is a royal descendant of a warrior race who eats a heart-shaped herb to enhance his senses and his physical attributes.  He’s skilled in unarmed combat and uses a hybrid fighting technique that combines acrobatics with animal mimicry.  Hit the jump for more on Williams’ hope to join the MCU.

THE PURGE: ANARCHY Images Take the Action to the Streets

Universal Pictures has released about a dozen new images for writer/director James DeMonaco‘s upcoming horror sequel The Purge: Anarchy.  One of the things I like about the direction this followup seems to be taking is that it truly expands on the general promise of the concept of “the Purge”, or at least it begins to show it implemented, rather than using it as a nifty backdrop for a mediocre home invasion film (à la last year’s first installment).  These pictures give you a good sense of that.

Universal Pictures has released the first trailer, poster, and images for writer/director James DeMonaco‘s horror sequel The Purge: Anarchy.  The follow-up continues the plot device from the first film in which all crimes are legal on one day of the year, during the annual “Purge”, which preserves peace and prosperity for the other 364 days of the year.  The sequel looks solid since instead of another home invasion, it appears we’ll be going beyond the confines of a shelter and watching characters struggle to survive the night.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer, poster, and images. The film stars Frank Grillo (The Grey), Michael K. Williams (Boardwalk Empire), and Zach Gilford (Friday Night Lights).  The Purge: Anarchy opens in theaters on June 20th.

Three TV Spots for ROBOCOP Starring Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, and Michael Keaton

Three new TV spots have popped up online for the remake of RoboCop.  The film takes place in 2028 and finds the sleazy OminiCorp putting its drone technology to use on domestic grounds by way of taking blown-apart cop Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman) and turning him into a cyborg police officer.  The experiment on Murphy is meant to be the first of many RoboCops the company hopes to put in every U.S. city, but things don’t go as planned.  After watching these TV spots, I’m still not excited for this movie.  I’m trying to hold out some hope, but I have to keep reminding myself that the film is coming out in February.

MGM and Sony have just released the new trailer and poster for Jose Padilha‘s remake of Paul Verhoeven‘s RoboCopThe film takes place in 2028 and finds the sleazy OminiCorp putting its drone technology to use on domestic grounds by way of taking blown-apart cop Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman) and turning him into a cyborg police officer.  The experiment on Murphy is meant to be the first of many RoboCops that the company hopes to put in every city around the country, but obviously things don’t go as planned.  For me, this trailer is not a good sign.  None of the action looks particularly interesting and the few laugh lines (“Robophobic”, “Good Cop/RoboCop”) land with a thud.  I think we could be looking at a movie that’s just as pointless as the remake of Verhoeven’s Total Recall.

Fox Searchlight has released a new clip from director Steve McQueen’s intensely moving drama 12 Years a Slave.  The true story is based on Solomon Northup’s autobiography of the same name, and stars Chiwetel Ejiofor (Children of Men) as Northup, an educated and married black man living in New York in 1841.  Northup was approached by two men about a job offer in Washington D.C., but when he showed up he was kidnapped and forced into slavery for over a decade.  This clip takes place shortly after Northup’s abduction, as he discusses a plan for survival with two fellow captives played by Michael K. Williams (The Wire) and Chris Chalk (Homeland).  This really is one of the best films of the year, and I highly suggest seeking it out when it opens in a theater near you.

Steve McQueen‘s 12 Years a Slave received massive acclaimed when it premiered at the Telluride Film Festival, and now the first featurette for the film has been released. The featurette contains plenty of new footage, and listened to the interviews, it looks like they’ve stayed pretty close to the source material.  I read the book earlier this year, and found it to be revelatory and emotional, and I couldn’t understand why it’s not on middle school reading lists alongside Uncle Tom’s Cabin.  It’s a powerful story, and it looks like it will be a powerful movie.
