Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is such a fun ride, with great action, plenty of laughs, a ton of heart and perfect choices in music.  It will have you singing along, and cheering for the snarky Rocket Raccoon and a talking tree named Groot.

During a conference at the film’s press day actors Chris Pratt (“Peter Quill”/”Star-Lord”), Zoe Saldana (“Gamora”), Dave Bautista (“Dax the Destroyer”), Michael Rooker (“Yondu”), Benicio Del Toro (“The Collector”) and Vin Diesel (“Groot”) were joined by director James Gunn to talk about what attracted them to this project, how liberating it is to not have to fit into the regular Marvel scheme of things, why Yondu is such a bad-ass, fighting the right attitude for Peter Quill/Star-Lord, the emotional journey of the story, the process for having the music organically come from and compliment the story, the physicality of these roles, why the movie references Kevin Bacon, and everyone’s favorite song on the soundtrack.  Check out what they had to say after the jump, and be aware that there are some spoilers.

It’s only two weeks or so until director James Gunn’s Marvel tentpole Guardians of the Galaxy hits US screens (it opens internationally a few days prior).  As you can tell by my reaction to the footage that was screened from the film last week, I’m quite excited for this picture (you should also check out the new TV spots that hit yesterday if you missed them).  Today sees the release of three character posters.  John C. Reilly’s Corpsman Dey, Glenn Close’s Nova Prime and Michael Rooker‘s Yondu.

Guardians of the Galaxy also stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Lee PaceKaren GillanBenicio Del ToroDjimon HounsouPeter Serafinowicz, and the voices of Bradley CooperVin Diesel, and Josh Brolin.  It opens in 2D and 3D on August 1st.  Hit the jump for the new Guardians of the Galaxy character posters!

Marvel has released more Guardians of the Galaxy images online.  The story follows five intergalactic misfits—Peter Quill aka Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel), and Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper)—as they set out to protect a powerful and mysterious orb from the villainous Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace).  I wouldn’t go so far as to qualify these stills as “new” since we’ve seen most of them in the trailers, but I still appreciate the high-quality close-ups, and I certainly don’t want to see new images that end up spoiling the film.

Hit the jump to check out the Guardians of the Galaxy images.  The film opens in 3D on August 1st, and also stars Karen Gillan, Glenn Close, Benicio Del Toro, Djimon Hounsou, Michael Rooker, John C. Reilly, and Peter Serafinowicz.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Images Provide New Looks at Michael Rooker, Plus New Info on His Character, Yondu

We got our first good look at Michael Rooker’s character Yondu in this extended trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy.  Now we’ve got a pair of newly released images that further showcase the blue-skinned alien’s bizarre appearance.  Rooker and director James Gunn commented on the comic book character’s big screen version, who retains some characteristics of the Marvel creation while definitely taking on traits that both Gunn and Rooker bring to the table.  Their commentary certainly helps clear things up for those of you who are hearing about this character for the first time.

Hit the jump for new images of Rooker’s Yondu from Guardians of the Galaxy, and be sure to check out Steve’s set visit report, and interviews with Gunn, and stars Zoe SaldanaKaren Gillan, and Dave Bautista.  Guardians of the Galaxy opens August 1st.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Footage Review: Evan’s Reaction to Marvel Screening 17 Minutes of Footage

by     Posted 22 days ago

guardians-of-the-galaxy-footage-review

I’ve been more excited about Guardians of the Galaxy than I have most other Marvel films for some time now.  I’m a huge fan of director James Gunn (Slither, Super) and the potential for strong authorial voices gets me more excited for tentpoles (see also Shane Black’s Iron Man 3 and Edgar Wright’s unfortunately cancelled take on Ant-Man).  While I generally like Marvel movies, there’s something about the humor in all of the Guardians of the Galaxy promos that I’ve seen that has colluded with my fandom of Gunn to raise my expectations for this film.  So when an invitation came my way to preview 17 minutes of the film in 3D IMAX this evening at the TLC Chinese Theater, I leapt at it despite the fact that I would essentially just be watching 17 minutes of footage I’d be seeing in a more complete context within a matter of weeks.

Groot, Rocket, and Gamora Get New GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Posters; Michael Rooker’s Yondu Teased in New Image

Only one superhero movie remains for Summer 2014, and fittingly Marvel will be bookending the blockbuster season.  We previously saw a string of Guardians of the Galaxy posters released that highlighted each character, but a few more posters have now landed online that give the CG characters Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel) and Rocket Raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper) their own one-sheets, as well as a deadly new poster for Zoe Saldana’s Gamora.  Moreover, writer/director James Gunn has also shared a new image that teases Michael Rooker as Yondu.  I continue to look forward to the film, but I’m hoping Disney doesn’t go into marketing overload and start revealing scenes from the third act in the final leg of the film’s promotion.

The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror recently held the 40th Annual Saturn Awards, celebrating the best of genre film and television at the Castaway Starlight Ballroom in Burbank, Calif.  Gravity took home the most awards, with five statues, while Marvel’s Iron Man 3 won the inaugural Best Comic-to-Film Motion Picture award, Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead both won three, and Hannibal took home Best Network Television Series.  Special Saturn Awards recognitions when to writer/producer Bryan Fuller (Dan Curtis Legacy Award), Greg Nicotero (George Pal Memorial Award) and Malcolm McDowell (Life Career Award).

While at the event, Collider chatted with presenter James Gunn, in attendance with actor Michael Rooker, who plays Yondu in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.  During the interview, the writer/director talked about creating exactly the movie he wanted to create, being able to go as dark as he wanted to go with the film, why it’s not as dark as Super 2 would be, the marketing of the movie, trying to finish the film before he starts the press tour in Singapore on July 7th (although he has some doubts that will happen), how lengthy the editing process has been, his learning curve with 3D, what he might do next, and whether he’d chose Daphne or Velma.  Watch the video and/or read the transcript after the jump.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Extended TV Spot Rocks out to “Cherry Bomb” and Has Plenty of New Footage

guardians-of-the-galaxy

The steady stream of Guardians of the Galaxy marketing continues as Marvel has released an extended TV spot for their upcoming sci-fi action film. This extended TV spot features plenty of fresh footage for a film that looks better and better.  Also, kudos to Marvel for their song selections when it comes to these ads.  Most movies and TV spots just pull from whatever is topping the iTunes chart.  Guardians is playing classic tunes.  They’ve used “Hooked on a Feeling”, “Spirit in the Sky”, and now “Cherry Bomb”.  Well done.

Hit the jump to check out the Guardians of the Galaxy extended TV spot.  The film opens in 3D on August 1st, and also stars Karen Gillan, Glenn Close, Benicio Del Toro, Djimon Hounsou, Michael Rooker, John C. Reilly, and Peter Serafinowicz.

Marvel has released a new Guardians of the Galaxy international trailer that features more Rocket Raccoon, less classic rock, and additional focus on the story.  While I was already sold on director James Gunn’s intergalactic adventure, this new trailer will get a lot more regular moviegoers excited for the movie.  As most of you know, the story follows five intergalactic misfits—Peter Quill aka Starlord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel), and Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper)—as they set out to recapture a powerful and mysterious orb from the villainous Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace).

First Trailer for Marvel’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Starring Chris Pratt and Zoe Saldana

Marvel has released the first trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy.  Led by half-human, half-alien Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), the team is comprised of humanoid aliens Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), talking raccoon Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper), and Groot (Vin Diesel), a giant, walking tree.  If you were at last year’s Comic-Con, you’ll recognize a lot of the footage, but for the majority of audiences this first look gives a great sense of tone and the type of humor on display in the film.  We also get a solid look at Karen Gillan as Nebula and Benicio Del Toro as The Collector; a dozen new still images from the film can be found here.

Lee Pace, John C. Reilly, Glenn Close, Michael Rooker, Djimon Hounsou, and Peter Serafinowicz also star in the comic book adaptation directed by James Gunn.  Guardians of the Galaxy opens in 3D on August 1st.  Watch the trailer after the jump.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Stars Chris Pratt and Michael Rooker Talk Rocket Raccoon

It’s rare that a movie will announce its scene-stealer before the movie opens, but Rocket Raccoon (who will be voiced by Bradley Cooper) is being tipped to be the standout character in Guardians of the Galaxy.  As far back as six months ago, director James Gunn said Rocket Raccoon was the heart of the movie.  Now star Chris Pratt, who plays Star Lord, is singing the praises of the talking raccoon.  At a party to celebrate the 100th episode of Parks and Recreation, Pratt told Access Hollywood that Rocket isn’t a cartoon, but a real character.  It’s a statement that lines up with Gunn’s comments at Comic-Con where he said Rocket Racoon was “not about creating Bugs Bunny in the middle of The Avengers.”

Hit the jump for more on what Pratt and co-star Michael Rooker had to say about Rocket Racoon.  The film also stars Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Lee Pace, Benicio Del Toro, Karen Gillan, John C. Having left production in London to make an appearance in Hall H at Comic-Con, cast members Chris Pratt (“Peter Quill”/”Star-Lord”), Zoe Saldana (“Gamora”), Benicio Del Toro (“The Collector”), Dave Bautista (“Drax the Destroyer”), Karen Gillan (“Nebula”), Michael Rooker (“Yondu”), Lee Pace (“Ronan the Accuser”) and Djimon Hounsou (“Korath”) joined director/writer James Gunn (Slither, Super) to talk to the press about the otherworldly Guardians of the Galaxy that’s more anti-hero than hero.

During the interview, Gunn talked about the basic moral premise of the film, when he might announce further casting, the tone they’re going for, working with such a big budget, and the connection between the Guardians and the rest of the Marvel universe, while the cast talked about stepping into these high-profile roles, the extent of the training, and their favorite aspects of their characters.  Check out what they had to say after the jump.

While the official Comic-Con schedule listed Marvel’s panel as centering on Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Soldier, we knew from experience to expect a few surprises.  As such, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige was greeted with great applause when he introduced director James Gunn and the entire main cast of Guardians of the Galaxy earlier today in Hall H, all of whom flew in from the London set just to appear on the panel.  While filming only just got underway two weeks ago, fans were treated to the excellent debut of some footage from the pic, while Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, David Bautista, Benicio Del Toro, Lee Pace, Djimon Hounsou, Karen Gillan, and Michael Rooker teased what to expect from the film.
