Fresh off AMC’s decision to bring Halt and Catch Fire back for another season, Showtime has ordered Masters of Sex Season 3 and Ray Donovan Season 3.  Both shows received 12-episode orders for a third season, set to debut in early 2015.  I haven’t seen either, but Masters of Sex is high on my list of shows I need to catch up on.  Lizzy Caplan has earned rave reviews for her lead performance, garnering an Emmy nomination for Best Actress in a Drama Series along with a bevy of Emmy nods for the show in general.  The series averages four million weekly viewers across all platforms while Ray Donovan averages five million, so bringing both shows back was a no-brainer for Showtime.  Read the full press release after the jump.

Andy Samberg, Kit Harington, Lena Dunham, and More to Lead HBO Sports Mockumentary 7 DAYS IN HELL

HBO is putting together a sports mockumentary project, and the network has pulled together a rather promising comedic ensemble.  Girls writer/co-executive producer Murray Miller is teaming up with Andy Samberg to create 7 Days in Hell, which is described as a mockumentary send-up of professional tennis.  Per THR, the one-off HBO Comedy Event will star Samberg as a superstar tennis “bad boy” who becomes embroiled in a seven-day tennis match at Wimbeldon with an Andy Murray-type prodigy and certified truck driver, played by Game of Thrones star Kit Harington.  The current roster also includes Fred Armisen, Lena Dunham, Will Forte, Karen Gillan, Howie Mandel, Michael Sheen, Mary Steenburgen, June Squibb, and Soledad O’Brien, who will play herself.

This sounds like the kind of delightfully goofy project that’s perfect for Samberg, and I’m very curious to see how Harington’s comedic skills stack up.  No word on when the project may air, but one assumes Samberg will have to fit the filming schedule into his hiatus from Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

First KILL THE MESSENGER Trailer Features Jeremy Renner and a Conspiracy Involving the Government and Crack

Focus Features has released the first Kill the Messenger trailer.  Directed by Michael Cuesta (Homeland, Dexter), the film is based on the true story of news reporter Gary Webb, whose life was ruined when he linked the CIA to a scheme to arm Contra rebels in Nicaragua and import cocaine into California.  His investigation not only threatened to ruin his career, but also his life and the life of his family.  This looks like it will be a good showcase for Renner, and while I like seeing him in blockbusters and high-profile awards contenders, I like that he’s going to be in a nuts-and-bolts story centered around a worthwhile topic.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film also stars Rosemarie DeWitt, Ray Liotta, Barry Pepper, Michael Sheen, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Oliver Platt, Andy Garcia, Tim Blake Nelson, Robert Patrick, Michael Kenneth Williams, and Paz VegaKill the Messenger opens October 10th.

Showtime has released the full trailer for its new drama series Masters of Sex.  The show stars Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan as William Masters and Virginia Johnson, real-life pioneers of the study of human sexuality whose work sparked the sexual revolution and catapulted them to fame.  This trailer shows a great deal of, well, sex, but the series also looks to delve pretty heavily into other issues like the importance of love with regards to sex, the idea of Masters’ research as smut vs. science, and of course complex character relationships.  The series also seems to have a good sense of humor as well, with Beau Bridges stealing a couple of scenes with his comedic work.

The Showtime drama series Masters of Sex, premiering on September 29th, chronicles the unusual lives, romance and pop culture trajectory of real-life pioneers of the science of human sexuality, William Masters (Michael Sheen) and Virginia Johnson (Lizzy Caplan).

While at the Showtime portion of the TCA Press Tour, actor Michael Sheen, along with executive producers Michelle Ashford and Sarah Timberman, talked about why this is one of the most challenging projects they’ve ever taken on, how closely they’re sticking to what really happened versus how much they have to invent for TV, setting the right tone, wanting to explore the relationship between Masters and Johnson slowly, how they handle the sex scenes on set, and whether this show has made them more open about sex, in their own lives.  Check out what they had to say after the jump.

Production Stars on KILL THE MESSENGER Starring Jeremy Renner; Andy Garcia, Michael Sheen, and Many More Join Cast

Earlier this year, we reported that Jeremy Renner was tapped to star in the thriller Kill the Messenger, directed by Michael Cuesta (Homeland).  Renner plays real-life reporter Gary Webb whose life was ruined when he linked the CIA to a scheme to arm Contra rebels in Nicaragua and import cocaine into California.  After publishing his 1996 series “Dark Alliance,” Webb became the target of a smear campaign by the CIA and rival journalists that eventually drove him to depression.  News on the film went silent until about a month ago when we it was announced that Rosemarie DeWitt, Paz Vega, and Michael Kenneth Williams had joined the cast.  It turns out the line-up is stacked with even more talent.  Production has begun on the flick, and a press release has revealed that the impressive cast also includes Andy Garcia, Tim Blake Nelson, Robert Patrick, Barry Pepper, Oliver Platt, Michael Sheen, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead.

ADMISSION Review

Paul Weitz is a director I have come to dread.  About a Boy was a long time ago, and in the interim he has done some truly abysmal films such as Cirque du Freak, American Dreamz, and Being Flynn (I didn’t even bother with Little Fockers).  But after a 12-year-drought, Weitz has delivered a film that’s almost as funny and sweet as About a Boy.  His new movie, Admission, is a playful, nice little story where leads Tina Fey and Paul Rudd have the room to exercise their comic and dramatic abilities, and do so with a charming screenplay from Karen Croner.  Even though it heads towards safe places, Admission never feels gratingly familiar.

Focus Features has released a large batch of new high-resolution images from the upcoming comedy-drama Admission.  Directed by Paul Weitz (About a Boy), the film stars Tina Fey as an admissions officer at Princeton University whose life is thrown for a curve when she runs into an old friend (Paul Rudd) while visiting an experimental New Hampshire high school.  The simple idea of Fey and Rudd together sounds like a pitch-perfect comedic pairing, and the trailers hint at some strong dramatic material as well.  Hopefully the full film delivers on both fronts.

Hit the jump to check out the new images.  The film also stars Lily Tomlin, Michael Sheen, Wallace Shawn, Nat Wolff, and Gloria ReubenAdmission opens on March 8th.

I try and heed the wise words of Conan O’Brien and resist the urge to be cynical. I really do. But while digging through our The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 coverage in anticipation of this week’s post I stumbled across this poster for the film and all of my best laid plans went to waste. There is just no excuse for a franchise of its stature to have a poster that terrible. I’m far from an expert in graphic design, but mercy…I re-read Adam’s original post several times hoping to find the sentence where he points out that the poster was the Grand Prize winner of Summit’s “Design the Worst Damn Movie Poster Possible” contest. Sadly, there was no mention of such a contest. This was real and it made my heart hurt.

All cynicism aside, in this week’s Top 5, The Twilight Saga comes to a merciful end with interviews and things of the like, Damon Lindelof‘s draft of the Prometheus script becomes available for your reading pleasure, news regarding the debuts of Star Trek Into Darkness‘ first trailer and first 9 minutes of the film surfaces, a handful of images and a video from the set of Thor: The Dark World make their way onto the Interwebs, and believe it or not, more news regarding Star Wars: Episode VII gets discussed. I trust you know where to find a brief recap and link to each.

THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN – PART 2 Review

It would be a gross understatement to say I haven’t been an ardent supporter of the Twilight franchise.  But I have tried to take each film on its own merits.  Nothing can change the fact that it has a despicable core message of how young women should relate to men, but there was always the potential for change.  Bella Swan could become a proactive character.  Edward Cullen and Jacob Black could be more than just brooding, softly smiling eye candy.  Somewhere, in the dreamy clouds of wish fulfillment, there may be something real instead of the silliest, most forced conflicts.  At the series’ conclusion, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 shows us what the Twilight movies could be at their best, but ultimately reminds us about the true nature of this series.
