Watch Sarah Koenig Fret Over How SERIAL Will End in Funny or Die Video

One of the best pieces of storytelling from any medium this year is happening on a podcast.  Many, many people (myself included) have become addicted to Serial, a podcast hosted by Sarah Koenig that follows her investigation into a decades-old murder and the questionable trial and imprisonment that followed.  The final episode of this season, which will wrap up this particular case, premieres tomorrow, and much like some memorable series finales in recent memory (notably Lost), everyone’s wondering how it’s going to end.  The folks at Funny or Die decided to take a humorous look at what Koenig may or may not be dealing with as audience members are hoping for a satisfying conclusion to a case that remains unsolved (remember folks, this is real life, not an episode of Law & Order).  Regardless, SNL alum Michaela Watkins does a swell job of playing Koenig, and yes, there are Mail Chimp jokes.

Check out the Serial Funny or Die video after the jump.  If you haven’t yet listened to the podcast, I cannot recommend it enough.

IN A WORLD… Review

[This is a re-post of my review from the 2013 Sundance Film Festival.  In a World...opens today in limited release.]

I usually like movies that have some sense of structure and pacing. If they don’t have these qualities, then I like these films to be truly daring and outside-the-box. Lake Bell‘s In a World… is a rambling mess of a nice little comedy with too many characters, and has almost no sense of pacing or flow. But somehow, it’s still a charming flick. Bell gives a fun lead performance, and she surrounds herself with a likable cast. Even the subtext is cutesy. In a World… should be a movie that I found a slog, but somehow, Bell’s film won me over despite its glaring flaws.

Roadside Attractions has released a trailer for Lake Bell‘s comedy, In a World…  Bell stars as Carol, a voiceover actress who feels marginalized both by the sexism in her profession and the success of her father (Fred Melamed), who is famous in the voiceover profession.  When I saw the film at Sundance, I enjoyed it despite some glaring flaws, and this trailer gives an idea of what a better movie would have looked like.  It streamlines the themes and the plot of the picture, and wisely leaves out the distracting subplot involving Carol’s sister Dani (Michaela Watkins) and her boyfriend Moe (Rob Corddry).

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film also stars Ken Marino, Lucy Punch, Nick Offerman, Eva Longoria,, and Demetri MartinIn a World… opens in limited release on August 9th.

Jennifer Lopez & Alex O’Loughlin Interview THE BACK-UP PLAN

Jennifer Lopez and Alex OLoughlin The Back Up Plan movie interview.jpg

Opening this weekend is the Jennifer Lopez & Alex O’Loughlin romantic comedy The Back-up Plan.   To help promote the film, I recently got to interview the two stars as a reporter for our partners at Omelete.  While I wasn’t sure what to expect when I sat down to do the interview, I’ll admit it turned out a lot better than I expected.  Also, the interview featured a lot of laughter.  Perhaps it was due to the questions I asked from the people that follow me on Twitter.  But more than likely, it was a combo between the questions and good luck.  Trust me, JLo was a lot funnier than I expected and I promise she’ll make you laugh as you watch.  We even talked about Anaconda.  I couldn’t believe it.  Hit the jump for the interview and more on The Back-up Plan:
