Now playing in theaters is director Craig Gillespie’s true-life sports drama Million Dollar Arm.  The film stars Jon Hamm as a washed-up sports agent who travels to India and sets up a nationally televised game show, “Million Dollar Arm” to see if any cricket players might cut it in the big leagues.  Once there, he finds two 18-year-old boys, Rinku (Suraj Sharma) and Dinesh (Madhur Mittal), whose talent at throwing a fastball could possibly lead them to a major league contract.  Written by Tom McCarthy (The Station AgentThe Visitor, and Win Win), Million Dollar Arm also stars Bill Paxton, Lake Bell, Aasif Mandvi, Pitobash, and Alan Arkin.  For more on the film, watch four clips and a featurette.

At the Los Angeles press day, I landed an exclusive video interview with J.B. Bernstein (who Hamm plays in the film) and Rinku Singh (one of the real baseball players portrayed in the film).   They talked about having Hollywood make their story, whether they were ever nervous it wouldn’t get made, if the film changed what really happened to make the story more cinematic, Bernstein’s reaction to having Jon Hamm portray him, and more.  Hit the jump to watch.

Based on an incredibly inspiring true story, Million Dollar Arm is so much more than just a sports film.  It tells the story of sports agent JB Bernstein (Jon Hamm), who comes up with a scheme to save his career by finding the next Major League Baseball star among the totally raw and untapped talent in India.  Once there, he finds two 18-year-old boys, Rinku (Suraj Sharma) and Dinesh (Madhur Mittal), whose knack for throwing a fastball could quite possibly lead them straight to a major league contract.

At the film’s press day, co-stars Alan Arkin (who plays retired baseball scout Ray Poitevint) and Bill Paxton (who plays Coach Tom House) spoke to Collider for this exclusive interview about what attracted them to this film, what gets them to sign on for a project, in general, what it was like to work in India, and the great admiration they have for their young Indian co-stars.  Paxton also talked about what it was like to be welcomed into the Marvel Universe for his role on the ABC series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Friday Box Office: GODZILLA Eyes “King of the Box Office” Title with Gargantuan $38 Million Debut

The “King of the Monsters” Godzilla made a triumphant return to movie theaters this weekend, and it looks as though the monster is making his presence very known.  Director Gareth Edwards’ new film Godzilla scored a huge $38.5 million on Friday, which puts the film on track for an incredibly impressive $98 million debut.  That’s way above the pre-release predictions, and the film could topple the superhero debuts of Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($95 million) and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ($91.6 million) earlier this year.  Though some are inexplicably complaining that the film isn’t two hours of non-stop CG-overload, reviews for Godzilla are generally positive, and it appears that the excellent marking campaign brought in considerable interest.

Check out Friday’s full box office report after the jump.

MILLION DOLLAR ARM Review

by     Posted 157 days ago

million-dollar-arm-review

Million Dollar Arm might be the most repulsive “Uplifting Sports Drama” ever made.  The movie pretends to show America as a land of opportunity, and athletics as a level playing field where hard work and determination are all that’s needed to succeed.  But at its ugly heart, it’s about a cold, callow bastard who discovers that you can outsource your personal growth.  Even though it pretends to carry the lesson about treating people as more than products, in practice, Million Dollar Arm shares the worst values of its despicable protagonist.

Disney has released the first trailer and poster for Craig Gillespie‘s drama Million Dollar Arm.  Based on a true story, Jon Hamm plays a washed-up sports agent who travels to India and sets up a televised, national game show “Million Dollar Arm” to see if any cricket players might cut it in the major leagues.  The trailer screams “Uplifting sports film” and there’s nothing wrong with that, especially when the script is from The Station Agent and Win Win writer Tom McCarthy.  Underdog sports stories can make for nice movies, and Million Dollar Arm also has a strong cast that also includes Lake Bell, Bill Paxton, Aasif Mandvi, and Alan Arkin.  I’m especially heartened to see Bell as the female lead.  She’s incredibly talented, and I hope her character is more dimensional than “love interest”.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer and poster.  The film also stars Suraj Sharma (Life of Pi) and Madhurt Mittal (Slumdog Millionaire).  Million Dollar Arm opens May 16, 2014.

Production has begun on Craig Gillespie‘s Million Dollar Arm.  Based on a true story, Jon Hamm plays a washed-up sports agent who travels to India, and sets up a televised, national game show “Million Dollar Arm” to see if any cricket players might cut it in the major leagues.  The press release provides the full synopsis, and while it sounds a little corny at points, such as “Ultimately, what began as a purely commercial venture becomes something more and leads JB to find the one thing he was never looking for at all—a family,” I have full faith in screenwriter Tom McCarthy.  He’s 3-for-3 with The Station Agent, The Visitor, and Win Win (although he also directed those movies).  Also, Hamm is long overdue for the lead role in a feature film.  Finally, the flick boasts a terrific supporting cast that includes Suraj Sharma (Life of Pi), Madhurt Mittal (Slumdog Millionaire), Bill Paxton, Lake Bell, Aasif Mandvi, Pitobash, and Alan Arkin.
