R.J. Cutler’s adaptation of Gayle Forman’s If I Stay is getting closer to that August 22nd theatrical debut, so Warner Bros. just released a slew of high-resolution stills and behind-the-scenes shots from the film.  The movie stars Chloe Moretz as Mia Hall, a talented musician whose hopes and dreams are decimated by a terrible accident.  I haven’t read the book, but based on the film’s promo materials, this one looks to be a serious tearjerker, possibly on par with Josh Boone’s The Fault in Our Stars.

You can check out eight clips from If I Stay right here, and hit the jump to take a look at those images covering the happier times in Mia’s life and a bunch that clearly come from the post-accident portion of the film as well.  If I Stay also stars Jamie BlackleyMireille EnosLiana LiberatoJoshua Leonard and Stacy Keach.

THE KILLING Season 4 Trailer and Poster: Linden and Holder Face Serious Consequences in the Crime Drama’s Final Season

Somewhat impossibly, Netflix has released the first The Killing season 4 trailer as well as a new poster.  The crime drama debuted on AMC in 2011 to solid reviews and ratings, but fans turned on the series when the story was stretched thin and the central mystery wasn’t solved until the end of the second season.  The show was cancelled, then AMC changed its mind and moved forward with season three.  The ratings continued to decline despite a creative upswing, and AMC subsequently cancelled the series again.  Enter Netflix, which then picked up the series for a fourth and final season consisting of six episodes, and we now have our first look at the show’s conclusion.  Season four picks up minutes after the season three finale, and sees Detectives Linden (Mireille Enos) and Holder (Joel Kinnaman) dealing with the aftermath of their decision while also working a new murder case involving an all-boys military academy, headed by Joan Allen’s Colonel Margaret Rayne.  Despite my frustration at some of the show’s weaker aspects, I’m curious to see how it all wraps up in these concluding episodes.

Atom Egoyan’s THE CAPTIVE Fails to Captivate Cannes

A perennial favorite at the Cannes Film Festival, Atom Egoyan returns this year to the official competition with The Captive, a psychological thriller starring Ryan Reynolds, Kevin Durand, Mireille Enos, Scott Speedman, Rosario Dawson and Bruce Greenwood in a cameo.  Despite the beauty of its atmospheric visuals, the movie failed to impress.  It was largely panned by the critics at its screening this week, leaving them with mixed feelings, some even booing as the end credits began to roll.

The synopsis sounded promising: Eight years after the disappearance of Cassandra, some disturbing indications pop up in the hotel rooms her mother cleans, indicating she may still be alive. Atom Egoyan was inspired by a real-life story, but stretched his imagination to include the “big brother is watching you” notion.  Hit the jump for more.

Ahead of its Cannes Film Festival premiere, the first clip from Atom Egoyan‘s The Captive has gone online along with new images.  The story follows how “a kidnapping destroys the relationships among those involved. As the film teases out the complex threads weaving together the victim, her family, the predators and the investigators, the mystery is revealed as to what happened to the child during the eight years she was missing.”  I hated Egoyan’s previous movie, Devil’s Knot, but he’s still an immensely talented filmmaker, and it sounds like he’s working from much stronger material rather than making a poor imitation of better movies.

Earlier today, the lineup for the 2014 Cannes Film Festival was announced, which means that marketing materials are going online, or in the case of Bennett Miller‘s Foxcatcher, back online.  A teaser trailer was released last fall, but then Sony pulled it shortly before announcing that the film would be pushed back to 2014.  Now that the movie is playing in competition at Cannes, the Foxcatcher trailer is back online, and I highly recommend watching it if you haven’t already.  There are also new posters and trailers David Michôd’s upcoming thriller The Rover starring Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson, and for Atom Egoyan‘s The Captive starring Ryan Reynolds and Mireille Enos.  Both films look fascinating, and I’m eager to hear the reaction to all of these pictures after they play at Cannes.

Hit the jump to check out the trailers and posters.  The Rover opens in New York and L.A. on June 13th and goes nationwide on June 20th.  Domestic release dates have yet to be announced for Foxcatcher and The Captive.

Warner Bros. Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures and New Line Cinema have released the first If I Stay trailer for director R.J. Cutler’s (Nashville) drama.  Based on the Gayle Forman novel of the same name, the film stars Chloe Grace Moretz as a young girl facing a tough decision between pursuing her musical dreams at Julliard or staying close to home with the love of her life (Jamie Blackley).  Circumstances are further complicated when a life-changing accident throws her life off completely off balance.  I’m not familiar with the novel, but it’s easy to see why the story’s central relationship is so beloved among readers, and this trailer suggests that the filmmakers have obviously taken great pains to bring that bond to the screen in as honest a way as possible.

A new international trailer for director David Ayer’s (writer of Training Day/director of End of Watch) Sabotage has just been released.  Based on Agatha Christie’s classic mystery novel And Then There Were None, the film stars Arnold Schwarzenegger and centers on a DEA task force who heists a drug cartel safe house, only to start getting picked off one-by-one by an unknown assassin.  While I was already excited for the project due to Ayer directing, all the footage I’ve seen makes the film look even better than I expected.  It’s also a lot bloodier than anything Schwarzenegger has done in many years.  It’s a great surprise.

Open Road Films has released the first trailer for director David Ayer‘s (End of Watch) new film Sabotage.  Previously referred to as Ten, the film is loosely based on Agatha Christie’s classic mystery Ten Little Indians, as it centers on a DEA task force who heists a drug cartel safe house, only to start getting picked off one-by-one by an unknown assassin.  The film actually looks pretty great, as the fantastic ensemble makes for an excitingly hardened team led by Arnold Schwarzenegger, who actually feels like a natural fit for the role of the group’s boss/father figure.  Intriguing story, talented director, varied and charming ensemble—Sabotage is looking mighty promising.

David Ayer‘s action film Sabotage has been quiet for some time now.  It used to be called “Ten“, and is loosely based on Agatha Christie’s classic mystery Ten Little Indians, as it centers on a DEA task force who heists a drug cartel safe house, only to start getting picked off one-by-one by an unknown assassin.  The movie stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, and now the first images since one was released almost a year ago.  The images feature plenty of firearms as well as potentially distracting hairstyles from Schwarzenegger (who is supposed to have a bad haircut so it would look “real”, according to USA Today) and co-star Sam Worthington, who’s sporting cornrows and going by the name “Monster” [Correction: Joe Manganiello has the cornrows.  They are not at all distracting on him].  The USA Today article also emphasizes the amount of training the stars had to go through in order to bond and cut down on takes for the action scenes.

WORLD WAR Z Blu-ray Review

Plagued by production troubles, rumored tension between star Brad Pitt and director Marc Forster, and expensive reshoots that entirely reworked the final 45 minutes of the film, World War Z opened this summer with a very large target on its back.  The final result, however, was far from a disaster.  Though many anticipated a major box office bomb from Paramount, World War Z was actually a rather effective summer tentpole whose intensity caught on with audiences to the tune of $540 million worldwide.  With a potential sequel on the way, the film is now available on home video.  Hit the jump for my review of World War Z on Blu-ray.

Mireille Enos Talks WORLD WAR Z on Blu-ray, the Reshoots, the Film’s Success, Looking Back on THE KILLING, David Ayer’s SABOTAGE, and More

After all of the talk about World War Z (now available on Blu-ray/DVD) being troubled and needing re-shoots, it unquestionably proved itself to be one of the surprise success stories of the summer, with over half a billion dollars at the worldwide box office and sparking talk of a sequel.  The film follows Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt), as he fights to save and return to his family while a lethal virus spread through a single bite turns healthy humans into something unrecognizable, unthinking and feral.

During this recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, actress Mireille Enos (who played Gerry’s wife, Karin) talked about how the film’s success was sweet revenge on everyone who was plotting their doom, that 2/3 of the film is very close to the original script and ultimately only the ending changed, how she’s been approached about the possibility of a sequel, what she thinks will most surprise people about what it took to pull things off behind the scenes, and the most scared she got while shooting.  She also talked about her experience working with Arnold Schwarzenegger on David Ayer’s Sabotage, and what she’ll remember most fondly about being a part of the AMC drama series The Killing, which was just canceled after its third season.  Check out what she had to say after the jump.

THE KILLING Canceled by AMC…Again

AMC has canceled the drama series The Killing for the second time.  The slow-burn serial killer mystery was canceled after its second season following negative reviews and dwindling viewership, but AMC subsequently changed its mind and renewed the show for a third season.  This past season marked a major improvement for the series overall, buoyed by a stellar guest acting turn by Peter Sarsgaard.  But alas, the creative upswing wasn’t enough as viewership was basically flat with season two, and now Deadline reports that AMC has cancelled the show for good this time.  The series starred Joel Kinnaman and Mireille Enos and was run by executive producer Veena Sud.
