Sundance Announces Premieres Films for 2015 Festival; Include Noah Baumbach’s MISTRESS AMERICA

Last week, Sundance unveiled the exciting lineup for the 2015 Sundance Film Festival piece-by-piece.  First we got the U.S. Competition, World Competition, and NEXT films, followed by the Park City at Midnight and Spotlight lineups.  Today, the festival has announced the films that will be playing in its Premieres category, and there are a number of highlights.  Director Noah Baumbach‘s indie Mistress America, which stars and was co-written by Baumbach’s Frances Ha collaborator Greta Gerwig, is on the docket, as is The Spectacular Now director James Ponsoldt‘s End of the Tour, which stars Jason Segel as author David Foster Wallace.  On the Documentary Premieres side of things, we have Alex Gibney‘s sure-to-be-controversial documentary Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief and the authorized doc Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck.

We’ve got some up-to-the-minute casting news to bring you, along with a first-look image:

  • The Identical – A musical drama directed by Dustin Marcellino and starring Seth Green, Ashley Judd, Joe Pantoliano and Ray Liotta.  The picture will have a special screening at AFM on November 8th.
  • Mississippi GrindSienna Miller to join Ryan Reynolds and Ben Mendelsohn in Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden’s new feature.  Production is set to begin January 2014 in New Orleans.

Ryan Reynolds to Star in MISSISSIPPI GRIND, Joel Edgerton Eyes Jeff Nichols Pic and Christopher Plummer Replaces Michael Caine in IMAGINE

  • Ryan Reynolds (Green Lantern) is set to star in writers-directors Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden’s gambling pic, Mississippi Grind, along with Ben Mendelsohn (Killing Them Softly).
  • Joel Edgerton (Warrior) is eyeing the new untitled picture from writer-director Jeff Nichols (Mud) which co-stars Michael Shannon (Man of Steel).
  • Christopher Plummer (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) will replace Michael Caine (The Dark Knight) in Imagine, the directorial debut of screenwriter Dan Fogelman (Crazy, Stupid, Love) that stars Jennifer Garner, Al Pacino, Annette Bening and Bobby Cannavale.

Christian Slater and Justin Long Join UNDISCOVERED GYRL Adaptation, Connie Nielsen Boards McG’s Latest and Ben Mendelsohn in Talks for MISSISSIPPI GRIND

  • Christian Slater (Broken Arrow) and Justin Long (Live Free or Die Hard) join the indie drama Undiscovered Gyrl, an adaptation of Allison Burnett’s novel which Burnett himself will direct.
  • Connie Nielsen (Gladiator) has joined the latest McG project, previously reported as Three Days to Kill.  The pic is a darkly comic action thriller that involves a Secret Service agent who comes out of retirement for one last mission in exchange for a drug that could save his life.
  • Ben Mendelsohn (Killing Them Softly) is in talks to join Mississippi Grind, a road trip pic of sorts with a plot focused on gambling addiction.  The indie also stars Jake Gyllenhaal who will produce.

Zoe Saldana to Play Nina Simone in Biopic NINA; Jake Gyllenhaal to Star in MISSISSIPPI GRIND

Two pieces of casting to report:

  • Zoe Saldana will play legendary jazz vocalist/pianist Nina Simone in the biopic Nina, written and directed by Cynthia Mort (Tell Me You Love Me).
  • Jake Gyllenhaal signed on to star in Mississippi Grind, a gambling drama written and directed by Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden (It’s Kind of a Funny Story).
