Earlier this month, Sight & Sound released its list of the Top 50 Films of All-Time as decided by critics along with Top 10 lists from various big-name directors.  The major “news” was that on the critics’ list, Vertigo overtook Citizen Kane as “The Greatest Movie of All Time™”.  Sight & Sound is worth talking about because they only make it once a decade.  However, the list should really only be used as a guide for what every cinephile should see in their lifetime.  The fact that Vertigo has a number “1″ in front of it doesn’t really mean much since you could watch Vertigo and Citizen Kane together in an afternoon.  Today, Sight & Sound has released its full Top 250 list and that’s where you’ll find other classics like Blade Runner, North by Northwest, Modern Times, and more.  Sight & Sound has also released the critics’ individual Top 10 lists, and that’s worth exploring into if you have the time.

Now here’s a subway we’d all like to take.  It seems a website called Vodkaster has created “The Best Movies Of All Time Map” much in the vein of those Lord of the Rings Flow Charts/Maps that circulated around the web a few months ago (we missed it).  It’s incredibly cool and detailed, even if the stops along the way don’t exactly make the most sense.

Starting with a series of “Universally Acclaimed Masterpieces” in the middle, such as Seven Samuari, Star Wars and Citizen Kane, it then branches off into sub genres such as the broad “Drama” and “Comedy,” to more specific ones like “Masterpiece about show business” and “Drama about tolerance.”
