Limited Paper: Mondo Announces a New Pair of LORD OF THE RINGS Posters from Mike Sutfin and Paolo Rivera

by     Posted: January 23rd, 2013 at 12:14 pm

mondo-lord-of-the-rings-sliceIt’s been mysteriously quiet in Poster World over the past week.  Indeed, it seems like many collectors are holding their breath in anticipation of…something…doesn’t it?  Rumors are circulating and strange bits of gossip are swirling around, all of them indicating that 2013’s first blockbuster print is on the verge of being dropped…but when?

Today’s announcement from the Mondo crew tells us they’ve got two snazzy-looking prints dropping this week, but neither print seems to fit the rumors we’ve heard.  That shouldn’t matter, though:  we may have to wait a little longer for something that fits the “blockbuster” description, but in the meantime this Thursday’s Lord of The Rings prints from Mike Sutfin and Paolo Rivera will do nicely.  Read all about ‘em after the jump, folks.

Earlier today, the word started spreading, and soon enough we were all paying attention:  “sometime soon”, a Mondo-related announcement was going to drop via our friends over at Ain’t It Cool News, and…well, and nothing:  that was pretty much all we got by way of a hint.  Mercifully, the wait for AICN’s announcement didn’t last long, and now we all know what the big secret was:  this week, Mondo will drop a Steven Spielberg double-header—a poster based on Jaws (by Laurent Durieux) and another based on E.T. The Extraterrestrial (by Mike Mitchell).

Wanna see these new prints, find out where they’re dropping, when, and what each one’s gonna cost ya?  Meet me on the other side, folks.

We’ve just about made it to Mondo’s Universal Monsters gallery show—their biggest show ever, opening this Friday and playing home to nearly 20 posters and 50-plus originals (according to Mondo’s creative director, Justin Ishmael, at tonight’s 3D screening of Creature From The Black Lagoon)—but that doesn’t mean all of Mondo’s other business has been put on hold.  In fact, they’re going to be dropping the remaining prints from their recent New York Comic-Con appearance tomorrow morning.  Wanna know what’s going on sale, what it’ll cost you, and what it looks like?  Meet me after the jump, folks.

Mondo-Brandenburg Drake show slice

If you ask the average collector to name a few of the artists currently working for Mondo, you’d probably hear a few of the same names over and over again. Much in the same way that you used to rank your favorite Backstreet Boys in middle school (what, you thought we forgot?!), Mondo fans can’t help but pick favorites. In fact, if ya talked to the wrong person, you might think Tyler Stout, Martin Ansin, Olly Moss, and Aaron Horkey were the only guys creating posters for Mondo.

Not so at the Mondo Gallery: from the beginning, the Gallery has been committed to showcasing the company’s the lesser-known stretches of the Mondo brand: its newer or less-prolific contributors, its more obscure licenses. Case in point? Mondo Gallery’s Brandenburg & Drake exhibit, which opened to rave reviews in Austin last night. Going in, Limited Paper knew very little about Robert Brandenburg and Craig Drake…but when we left, we were true believers. Find out why after the jump, folks.

In the debut edition of Limited Paper, we named Mark Englert as our first-ever “Thing Worth Getting Excited About”, pointing to his outstanding posters for The Thing, Stephen King’s It, and The Walking Dead as proof of his awesomeness.  Well, it’s now a few months later, and it appears that we weren’t the only ones getting excited by Mark’s work:  just today, Mondo announced their first-ever collaboration with Englert…and from the looks of it, it’s going to be a doozy.

Want to see Mark Englert’s Back to the Future poster?  Mondo’s latest Adventure Time poster?  Meet me after the jump, my fellow poster nerds.
