Limited Paper: Behold, Incredible New Mondo Posters Based on the Films of Paul Thomas Anderson

by     Posted: May 13th, 2013 at 11:55 am

From time to time, Mondo likes to welcome a few new artists into the fold.  They’re also big on launching posters as part of a larger “series”, as in their ongoing Universal Monsters releases, the still-waiting-for-a-Martin-Ansin-Twelve-Monkeys series based on the films of Terry Gilliam, or the somewhat-unofficial Tyler-Stout-doing-Quentin-Tarantino-films series.  Today, they’re doing all of these things at once:  a new poster series based on the filmography of Paul Thomas Anderson has been announced, and they’re bringing in both artists new and old to see it through to completion.  See some of that action after the jump, Captain.

Mondo’s IRON MAN 3 Posters by Martin Ansin and Phantom City Creative

It was almost a sure-thing that Mondo would be whipping up some posters for Iron Man 3.  The Alamo Drafthouse’s art boutique has provided posters for Iron Man and Iron Man 2, and now they’ve got some beauties for Shane Black‘s upcoming third installment.  Phantom City Creative has provided a poster showing off the many armors of the new movie, and I really like the schematic design and level of detail.  There’s also a regular and variant poster from artist Martin Ansin.  It’s reminiscent of his Looper poster in how it how cuts together different images and hues inside and across multiple boundaries.

Hit the jump for sizes and pricing on the posters.  The posters will be available at a random time on Friday, so keep an eye on @MondoNews for the announcement.  Iron Man 3 opens in 3D on May 3rd.

by     Posted: April 15th, 2013 at 3:55 pm

With the Criterion Collection’s Repo Man on the verge of being releases, we’d been expecting a Jay Shaw print to drop any minute, one to match the design he created for the film’s cover box…and that print did just get announced.  But did anyone expect the other Repo Man poster Mondo’s dropping later this week?  Just weeks after unleashing a slew of new Tyler Stout prints at the Mondo Gallery’s Stout & Taylor show, Tyler Stout’s Repo Man gets announced.  You as shocked as we were?  Think about it while you check out the specs on this week’s Mondo prints, after the jump…

TOP 5: ELYSIUM, WHITE HOUSE DOWN, Legendary Pictures CEO Thomas Tull Interview, First Trailers for RUSH, Mondo CEO Justin Ishmael Interview

From time to time I like to use the opening paragraph to discuss my latest screenprint investments and/or dream items. This week I’m playing a similar note as I recently picked up Olly Moss“Batman’s Rogues Gallery” set on eBay for very close to what the timed edition went for originally. Those of you who follow posters and prints know how redeeming it can be to finally get an item you originally missed out on without having to pay exponentially more than its original asking price. Now, if only Ken Taylor‘s Halloween print would stop being so rare/expensive, I could officially run out of room on my walls.

I’ll stop gushing and leave any more in-depth poster/print talk to our own Limited Paper. For my part, this week’s Top 5 includes the first trailer and a video blog recap of 10 minutes of footage from Neill Blomkamp‘s Elysium, our White House Down set visit recap, an exclusive interview with Legendary Pictures CEO Thomas Tull, the first trailers for Ron Howard‘s Rush, and an extended interview with Mondo CEO Justin Ishmael. As is customary, a brief recap and link to each is ready and waiting for your attention after the jump.

If you read the interview that Collider’s Steve “Frosty” Weintraub recently conducted with Mondo’s Justin Ishmael, you know that Austin’s biggest screenprint retailer is dead serious about making vinyl a consistent part of their output.  Their most recent vinyl release—the soundtrack to Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive, featuring artwork by the one-and-only Tyler Stout—sold out quickly upon release, and the company’s previous vinyl releases have also sold well…and now we’ve got the details on their next vinyl drop.  Pretend you didn’t read the headline and find out when the album’s dropping, what’s on it, and who did the artwork after the jump, folks.

Limited Paper: Mondo Dropping Their Remaining WonderCon Posters Tomorrow, Including New Work From Kevin Tong, Richey Beckett, and Mike Mitchell

by     Posted: April 10th, 2013 at 4:04 pm

A few weeks back, the Mondo crew traveled to this year’s WonderCon and unleashed a handful of new posters:  a Rear Window print from Kevin Tong, a striking Scarface piece from Mike Mitchell, Richey Beckett’s nightmare-inducing take on Shelob’s Lair from Lord of The Rings, and—last but certainly not least—a new Adventure Time poster from fan-favorite JJ Harrison.  This was all well and good for the thousands of WonderCon attendees, but what about the rest of the Mondo fanbase–would there be any prints left for them?

Turns out that, yes, there are, and tomorrow they’re all going on sale via the Mondo website.  Wanna see what they look like, what they’ll cost you, and how many of them are floating around out there?  Meet me after the jump, folks.

As most of you know, everyone at Collider are huge fans of Mondo.  It seems like every time they put out a limited screenprint that blows us away, a short time later, they do it again.  This probably explains their ever growing fan base, and why their posters sell out in minutes.  For more on Mondo, here’s our previous coverage.  You can also check out everything they’ve released on their website.  Be warned: some of their older posters are rare and expensive.

A few days ago, I got on the phone with Mondo CEO Justin Ishmael.  During our hour long conversation, we talked about a wide variety of subjects.  Hit the jump if you’re curious about upcoming gallery shows, if they’re going to be at Comic-Con, the status of Drew Struzan‘s Dark Tower print, Olly MossSpirited Away, future Mondo Mystery Movies, new licenses, if they’ll being doing more HBO prints, how they decide on the size of a print run, if Aaron Horkey will do more Lord of the Rings prints, and so much more.

Limited Paper: Ken Taylor’s Remaining BEETLEJUICE, RAMBO, WATCHMEN, METROPOLIS Posters (And More) Drop Tomorrow Via Mondo

by     Posted: April 3rd, 2013 at 2:54 pm

When the Mondo Gallery’s Stout & Taylor showcase opened last month, it was hard not to look at the crowd assembled outside and think, “Tonight, there are two types of collectors in the world:  those who are getting publicly shitfaced in advance of some seriously reckless spending somewhere in downtown Austin…and everyone else”.

Well, for those that couldn’t make it there that night, there’s good news:  the Mondo Gallery has announced that a number of Taylor’s Stout & Taylor prints will be made available to all via the official Mondo store.  Wanna know what’ll be available and what it’s gonna cost you?  Meet me after the jump, Peaches.

Limited Paper: Gallery Shows in April Include Bottleneck’s WHEN THE LIGHTS GO OUT, Mondo’s MIKE MITCHELL Show, Spoke Art’s SCORSESE Tribute

by     Posted: April 2nd, 2013 at 5:26 pm

We’re headed into the fourth month of 2013, and so far it seems like there’s been no slowing the pace set by galleries, artists, and fine screenprint retailers everywhere back in 2012:  it’s only two days into April, and already a number of impressive-looking gallery shows (and a Mondo screening in Kansas City) have been announced, including Spoke Art’s Scorsese-themed showcase, Mondo’s Mike Mitchell solo show, and Bottleneck Gallery’s Glow-in-The-Dark orgy, When The Lights Go Out.  Wanna find out when each of these shows will be opening its doors?  Meet me after the jump, folks.

WonderCon: 50 Pictures From the Convention Floor Including Toys, Comic Books, Mondo Posters, Tom Cruise’s Ship from OBLIVION, and More

wondercon-convention-floor-image-slice

Since most Collider readers won’t have the opportunity to attend this year’s WonderCon in Anaheim, California, I decided to do the next best thing: take a ton of pictures from the convention floor.   While WonderCon is still a small convention when compared to its sibling Comic-Con, I love being able to walk the floor with ease and I also cherish the abundance of indie dealers that haven’t (yet) been pushed out by Hollywood and the huge corporations.  If you like getting all the free swag that’s in abundance in San Diego every summer, WonderCon is not for you, but if you want to experience what Comic-Con was like before it became mainstream, WonderCon is great.  However, with the popularity of geek culture expanding every year, it’s only a matter of time before WonderCon becomes Comic-Con, just in a different city and earlier in the year.

Hit the jump to check out 50 images from the convention floor.  Some of the highlights include Tom Cruise‘s ship from Oblivion, the Mondo booth, tons of toys, Kevin Tong’s booth, comic books, costumes, and a lot more.  And one last thing…WonderCon just opened a few hours ago.  Over the next 48 hours we’ll be covering a number of the panels and conducting a lot of exclusive interviews.  Check back all weekend for constant updates.

Limited Paper: Mondo Reveals Jaw-Dropping New GAME OF THRONES Posters by Aaron Horkey and Richey Beckett

game-of-thrones-poster-slice

At last year’s San Diego Comic-Con, it’d only been weeks since the Mondo crew (who you really oughtta be following by now on Twitter via @MondoNews) announced their acquisition of the Lord of the Rings license.  Fantasy fans were pretty thrilled about that headed into the Con (several people told me Tyler Stout was “definitely” going to show up to the Con and drop a new poster set for Peter Jackson’s franchise), but they had a different, equally exciting surprise waiting for them that week:  the start of a Game of Thrones series.  We’ve seen a ton of Game of Thrones-themed prints since then, but the two dropping tomorrow—from artists Aaron Horkey and Richey Beckett—are two of the best in the whole run.  See ‘em after the jump, folks.

Limited Paper Exclusive Interview: Ken Taylor Explains the Thinking Behind New Posters Created for the STOUT & TAYLOR Show at the Mondo Gallery in Austin

by     Posted: March 21st, 2013 at 8:41 am

What we’ve got here is your classic “Good News/Bad News” situation.  Bad news first:  an impressive variety of real-world shenanigans (from geographical shenanigans to technological shenanigans , we saw it all this weekend) conspired to keep the following interview from getting in front of you sooner…but don’t reach for those sleeping pills and dry-cleaning bags just yet, folks:  there’s good news, too.

Namely this:  while you might’ve had to wait a few extra days for this interview to go live, I’m prepared to wager that you’ll find it to be well worth the wait.  It would not be hyperbole to say that the resulting writeup—which you’re about to read– is one of the most-interesting, most informative interviews I’ve ever had the pleasure of conducting for Collider.  See what I mean after the jump, folks.
