After three relatively strong frames, a January chill has hit the box office. Nearly a year after it was first scheduled to hit theatres, Paramount’s Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters is poised to take first place at the weekend box office. The R-rated fantasy starring Jeremy Renner earned an estimated $6 million from its 3,372 locations on Friday, suggesting a three-day total of $15 million. That’s $5 million short of studio expectations; but it’s not bad for a film with a 14% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Fellow-newcomer Movie 43 claimed a 6% RT rank and see what happened? On Friday, the collection of comedy shorts earned $1.8 million from 2,023 locations and is looking at a weekend of just $5 million. FilmDistrict’s Parker, the last of the R-rated newcomers, saw an opening of $2.1 million from 2,224 locations. The action movie could get as high as $6 million by Sunday: an opening that would fall below both Killer Elite and Safe on the list of Jason Statham’s recent disappointments. Check back tomorrow for full results.

Title Friday Total
1. Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters $6,025,000 $6
2. Mama $3,800,000 $39.5
3. Silver Linings Playbook $2,337,000 $61.8
4. Zero Dark Thirty $2,325,000 $62.4
5. Parker $2,130,000 $2.1

Griffin Dunne Talks Directing a Segment in Comedy Anthology MOVIE 43, Matthew McConaughey’s Weight Loss in DALLAS BUYER’S CLUB, and More

From producers Peter Farrelly and Charles Wessler, Movie 43 is a raunchy and outrageous anthology of short comedic movies, featuring a variety of different directors and writers, and starring some of the biggest names in Hollywood.  One of the intertwined stories is Veronica/CVS, directed by Griffin Dunne and starring Emma Stone and Kieran Culkin, about star-crossed lovers who must say farewell for the last time.

During this recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, actor/director Griffin Dunne talked about why his particular segment appealed to him, the attraction of doing something so raunchy but with such passion, how crazy it is to be a part of a movie with the biggest cast ever assembled, the advantages of a comedy made of shorts at a time when everyone has such short attention spans, what he enjoys most about directing, and what he looks for in future projects.  He also talked about his work as an actor in Dallas Buyers Club, what it was like to see Matthew McConaughey go through such extreme weight loss for the role (their scenes are when his character is at his weakest), and how it’s taken about 10 years to finally get the film made.  Check out what he had to say after the jump.

The first images from the R-rated comedy omnibus Movie 43 have gone online.  The film has been in development for years since it takes a while to find time in the schedules of a gigantic cast whose ranks include Emma Stone, Hugh Jackman, Kate Winslet, Naomi Watts, Terrence Howard, Halle Berry, and Jason Sudeikis just to name a few.  The films in the collection were directed by Brett Ratner, Elizabeth Banks, Mike Judge, Peter Farrelly, Bob Odenkirk, Steve Baker, Damon Escot, and more.  While I’m sure the collection will be a mixed bag, these images show off the potential for some hilarious short films.  There will also be a major plotline, but Farrelly, who also produced the film with Charlie Wessler, wouldn’t tell EW what it is.

Leslie Bibb Talks Playing Wonder Woman Opposite Jason Sudeikis as Batman in MOVIE 43

by     Posted 2 years, 331 days ago

While on the set of Takashi Shimizu’s upcoming airplane based horror film 7500, I got to sit down with a few other journalists and Leslie Bibb. We’ll have the full set report closer to the film’s release date, but today we have a little scoop on her upcoming role as Wonder Woman. Seriously. Kinda. Bibb plays the superhero in a segment of Peter and Bobby Farrelly‘s comedy anthology Movie 43. Her short features Jason Sudekis as Batman, Bobby Cannavale (The Other Guys) as a “jacked-up” Batman, Kristen Bell as Supergirl, and John Hodgman as Penguin. Hit the jump to see what Bibb had to say about her stint as Wonder Woman and the segment as a whole (which also stars Justin Long and Uma Thurman), and to watch the original short that inspired their version called Robin’s Big Date.
