AMERICAN HORROR STORY: FREAK SHOW Recap: “Orphans”

I finally got what I wanted from American Horror Story: Freak Show, it just didn’t come at the right time.  Ever since episode 6, “Bullseye,” it’s been clear that the Freak Shows supporting cast deserves more than a scene here or there, and now Naomi Grossman further proves it.  Pepper’s always been a fine, likable member of the troupe, but “Orphans” takes the character well beyond just being the resident pinhead.  It’s easily one of the most moving episodes of the season, but it’s hard not to wonder, why now?  Perhaps it’s my own fault for having specific expectations for the final episode before the holiday break, but at the end of “Orphans,” I had more interest in revisiting American Horror Story: Asylum than seeing what’s to come on January 7th.

AMERICAN HORROR STORY: FREAK SHOW Recap: “Tupperware Party Massacre”

Who would have thought a tupperware party massacre would come hand-in-hand with some major emotional breakthroughs?  Dandy’s murderous rampage may have stolen a good deal of the spotlight, but American Horror Story: Freak Show episode 9, “Tupperware Party Massacre,” is also a standout because it moves a number of key characters forward, and in promising directions at that.  Folks like Dell and Elsa seemed irredeemable, but after the events of this episode, it looks as though a little remorse and a common cause could be exactly what they need to stop the monotony of their selfish behavior and make them engaging and possibly likable characters as well.

Naomi Grossman Talks Orgies, Deleted Scenes, and Major Character Deaths in AMERICAN HORROR STORY: FREAK SHOW & ASYLUM

From Murder House to Asylum to Coven, American Horror Story has redefined itself each season with no connective tissue between them. The premiere of the series newest incarnation Freak Show brought with it a curious new wrinkle. Naomi Grossman returned to the series, not playing a different character as all returning actors have prior; but instead reprising her role from Asylum as Pepper, the ‘pinhead’ inmate abducted by aliens and turned into a savant. From Pepper’s standpoint, Freak Show then becomes a prequel to Asylum, an origin tale of sorts and the first suggestion that perhaps all the seasons occur in a singular universe.

In the following interview with Naomi Grossman, she discusses being the first actor to play the same character through multiple seasons, what’s to come for Pepper on Freak Show and shooting the carny orgy from last week’s premiere episode. For the full interview, hit the jump.

American Horror Story is well known for bringing back actors from previous seasons, but giving them new roles.  In American Horror Story: Freak Show, however, we’ve got an actress reprising her role from season 2.  Naomi Grossman played Pepper in American Horror Story: Asylum and now Freak Show will fill us in on what she was up to prior to being committed to Briarcliff.

A while back, there was an American Horror Story call sheet leak and the document had Pepper’s name on it, so there’s been talk of Pepper’s return for a little while, but now, not only did show co-creator Ryan Murphy confirm it, but FX also unveiled a brand new still of Pepper in Freak Show.  Hit the jump to check it out.  American Horror Story: Freak Show begins on October 8th and also stars Sarah PaulsonDenis O’HareKathy BatesAngela BassettFrances ConroyMichael ChiklisJessica Lange and Evan Peters.
